THE MORNING RANT: Jacksonville Airport Fire Destroys 50 Cars, With Structural Damage to the Parking Garage
In a press conference, Mayor Donna Deegan said there were about 50 cars that were damaged from the fire that was still burning, but under control. Deegan also said the fire started on the second floor with one car and spread to other cars.Fire chief Keith Powers is reported as stating that that there was a partial collapse on the second and third floors, then a secondary collapse about 30 minutes later, to which he added, “We’re not putting firefighters in there.” Here is a picture of the original car spontaneously erupting in flames, with fire blasting sideways and igniting neighboring cars.

Actually Buck I have seen ICE vehicles spontaneously catch fire in a parking lot. But those were caused by.....electrical shorts. Saw two burn weeks apart in my work parking lot in the fall of 2002.

A friend is a fire captain and says fireman want nothing to do with fires involving solar panels because they contain large amounts of heavy metals

The hybrid batteries are much smaller, not used as much, not as often -- or heavily -- charged and discharged, and tend to be more advanced in design. Also, I think in most hybrid systems, there's still the usual 12V battery that starts the motor, so the hybrid battery is (usually) disconnected when the car is turned off. The EV batteries are "on" 24/7.
All that being said, the trend is for newer hybrids to have larger batteries and longer EV-only modes, as a way to get past stringent emissions and gas mileage requirements. The new Revuelto hybrid gets something like the equivalent of 45 mpg in the bullshit Euro tests. With a 6.5L V12 that revs to 9500 rpm. Sure, Jan.

A point to consider with the fire statistics of ICE vs EV cars: Many of the ICE fires will be quite limited, for example the engine compartment/front end burns but that's all, and no nearby vehicles are threatened. (I've seen those on the side of the interstate, haven't you?) EV fires, however, are almost always catastrophic, are extremely difficult (bordering on impossible) to extinguish, and threaten anything nearby because of their intense heat.

A point to consider with the fire statistics of ICE vs EV cars: Many of the ICE fires will be quite limited, for example the engine compartment/front end burns but that's all, and no nearby vehicles are threatened. (I've seen those on the side of the interstate, haven't you?) EV fires, however, are almost always catastrophic, are extremely difficult (bordering on impossible) to extinguish, and threaten anything nearby because of their intense heat.

I said I'm not defending EVs. Just pointing out a stat that can derail a debate with EV advocates. Its the fact that the fires are far more intense and dangerous that should be the focus and not that they just are prone to catch fire.

Sadly, I couldn't determine ICE of EV. Just Chevy.

Was just at the JAX airport last night picking up friends. They are not allowing anyone with a car that was in hourly parking to retrieve their vehicle so there are hundreds of cars that were not damaged that the owners cannot access. It is a full blown CF.

One of the problems with parking garages and EVs is the weight of the batteries. A garage on NYC collapsed a couple of years ago killing and attendant. It was blamed on the weight and number of EVs because the garage has been built for the weight of ICEs

How old are they? 10 brand-new cars driving off new-dealer lots and catching fire is much worse than 20 decades-old cars with 100k miles on them catching fire.

I had not read that, but honestly it probably wouldn't have mattered. Apparently they had an engine on their sailing ship as well, and it failed. The currents there are strong and without anything to push the ship one way, it goes the way of the current.
If you look, you'll notice that the ship is going backward which is always a horrendous event in a sailing ship, especially. It doesn't really matter who the crew are, they couldn't have stopped it. There was a tugboat on it trying to keep it from crashing into the bridge.
I mean, a better crew probably would have gotten the hell out of the masts better, but they couldn't have prevented the collision.
I had not read that, but honestly it probably wouldn't have mattered. Apparently they had an engine on their sailing ship as well, and it failed. The currents there are strong and without anything to push the ship one way, it goes the way of the current.
If you look, you'll notice that the ship is going backward which is always a horrendous event in a sailing ship, especially. It doesn't really matter who the crew are, they couldn't have stopped it. There was a tugboat on it trying to keep it from crashing into the bridge.
I mean, a better crew probably would have gotten the hell out of the masts better, but they couldn't have prevented the collision.

OT: came to work today to find a family of Canadian Geese parked in front of my roll up door. Apparently they walked up the parking bay to the dumpsters and hit the 10 foot cinderblock wall. Mom and Dad flew away leaving the flightless chicks to fend for themselves since they couldn't scale the wall. Reefing, i think it's called, is a legit thing in sailing. Let a headwind push you backwards just to get some water flowing over the tiller so you can get turned back to where you can start sailing properly again. Why they didn't drop anchor after loss of power is beyond me but maybe it happened too fast but still thinking Captain error along with not enough professional sailors onboard.
Yeah that was the only option at that point. I am not certain they had time, but nobody even tried which is definitely a problem.
And honestly, any captain whose ship backed into a bridge and snapped off masts should be beached for life even if they did everything exactly right.

In both cases - not a certain suicide. Certainly not Carradine. Nobody is sure about Hutchence.

My instinct was to catch it before it hit the counter -- only my mom had placed a sharp steak knife sticking blade-up in the dish dryer rack -- upon which I impaled my right palm.

Eddie Vedder has an amazing voice but he's always been a leftist crank. His pop culture reach is pretty much negligible as well (as much Springsteen at this point). Pearl Jam is still around but only their most rabid fans are aware of it, because they deliberately moved away from anything pop and radio friendly.

Part of the troubleshooting process on a "misfire" on my IDI diesel engine is to actually crack the injector loose and let it spray diesel everywhere to bleed the air from the line.
Never have to worry about anything other than smelling like diesel for a week afterwards.
