THE MORNING RANT: Jacksonville Airport Fire Destroys 50 Cars, With Structural Damage to the Parking Garage

Jacksonville Airport garge Fire - 1.JPG

A massive fire in a parking garage at the Jacksonville airport forced evacuations, a closure of the airport, the loss of 50 cars, and structural damage to the building.

There is not yet confirmation of the make and model of the vehicle that started this horrible conflagration. Local authorities have not yet confirmed that the vehicle that started this fire was in fact an EV, but I have little doubt.

”Officials say about 50 cars were damaged in fire at JAX hourly garage”

In a press conference, Mayor Donna Deegan said there were about 50 cars that were damaged from the fire that was still burning, but under control. Deegan also said the fire started on the second floor with one car and spread to other cars.

Fire chief Keith Powers is reported as stating that that there was a partial collapse on the second and third floors, then a secondary collapse about 30 minutes later, to which he added, “We’re not putting firefighters in there.”

Here is a picture of the original car spontaneously erupting in flames, with fire blasting sideways and igniting neighboring cars.

Jacksonville Airport garge Fire.JPG

An Australian EV skeptic who has a popular You Tube channel under the name “MGUY” did an analysis of what is known so far. In his analysis posted yesterday he looked at several reasons the Jacksonville garage fire was likely started by a runaway thermal event, including a TV interview with an eyewitness who watched it all start. The eyewitness said, “There was a car on fire underneath, and the flames started spreading to the other cars, and their tires started catching on fire, and they just started going off, one after the other.”

My translation is that a thermal runaway event involving an electric vehicle caused a blowtorch of fire to come out from underneath the EV, igniting the tires of neighboring cars, which then exploded in flame when their gas tanks caught fire, causing more cars to catch fire.

For all the EV fanboys who will write me to state that this is proof that ICE cars are also dangerous, because they catch fire too, your argument is a non-starter. ICE cars do not spontaneously erupt in flames when parked with the ignition off.

Below is a picture of the vehicle that started the fire. It is the one on the left with the little white circle on the windshield. I have a strong suspicion what kind of vehicle this is, but I am not completely positive. Are any of you Car ID guys able to figure what make and model this vehicle carcass is?

Jacksoville Fire - after picture.JPG

If my suspicions are correct, and this awful fire that caused parts of an airport parking garage to collapse was due to an EV runaway thermal, we need to get serious about prohibiting EVs from parking in multi-car garages.

No one would argue for the right to park a McVeigh-type fertilizer bomb in a parking garage, so why are we allowing unstable lithium car bombs into public garages?

With the Brooklyn Bridge strike last night:
I’m fighting for answers about whether Trump and DOGE have impacted water traffic control.
⁹We know they’ve been meddling with U.S. Coast Guard staffing.
Trump relieved Admiral Linda Fagan as Commandant of the USCG, and that position is still vacant.
And the hiring freeze has limited the ability for the USCG to staff up the Vehicle Traffic Service, that’s their traffic control operation that acts like Air Traffic Control but on water.
We need action for our national security, infrastructure protection, and public safety.

Posted by: Emmie at May 19, 2025 11:12 AM (rF2iL)
_______

Much less risk, but not zero. I'm not aware of any hybrid battery fires, but it's possible. The hybrid batteries are much smaller, not used as much, not as often -- or heavily -- charged and discharged, and tend to be more advanced in design. Also, I think in most hybrid systems, there's still the usual 12V battery that starts the motor, so the hybrid battery is (usually) disconnected when the car is turned off. The EV batteries are "on" 24/7.

All that being said, the trend is for newer hybrids to have larger batteries and longer EV-only modes, as a way to get past stringent emissions and gas mileage requirements. The new Revuelto hybrid gets something like the equivalent of 45 mpg in the bullshit Euro tests. With a 6.5L V12 that revs to 9500 rpm. Sure, Jan.

Posted by: Elric Blade at May 19, 2025 11:18 AM (iFTx/)

76 A point to consider with the fire statistics of ICE vs EV cars: Many of the ICE fires will be quite limited, for example the engine compartment/front end burns but that's all, and no nearby vehicles are threatened. (I've seen those on the side of the interstate, haven't you?) EV fires, however, are almost always catastrophic, are extremely difficult (bordering on impossible) to extinguish, and threaten anything nearby because of their intense heat.

In the headlong effort to make solar and wind seem as inexpensive as possible, they have not included fees that address the eventual cost of disposal, which could leave taxpayers holding the bag.

89 35 Percentage wise there are more ICE fires too.
Posted by: polynikes at May 19, 2025 11:08 AM (VofaG)

I'll give you that stat without asking for citation.

I'll just ask this: How about if we control for age of the vehicle, is it still a higher percentage?

Now give me average damage cost per incident - Every EV fire is not only a total loss but often a property destroying conflagration

91 A point to consider with the fire statistics of ICE vs EV cars: Many of the ICE fires will be quite limited, for example the engine compartment/front end burns but that's all, and no nearby vehicles are threatened. (I've seen those on the side of the interstate, haven't you?) EV fires, however, are almost always catastrophic, are extremely difficult (bordering on impossible) to extinguish, and threaten anything nearby because of their intense heat.

92 Actually Buck I have seen ICE vehicles spontaneously catch fire in a parking lot. But those were caused by.....electrical shorts.
---
Yup.
Most common cause, I've seen:
1st, water damaged/submerged cars that were repaired. Don't do this, just total it out. Salt water? Don't even try. You'll never find all the corrosion.
2nd, faulty repairs or modifications
3rd, age.

Anyway, have you ever seen a car go up? Drove by one months ago on a two-lane, rural road, probably 5 minutes or less after it started.
It was pretty much consumed and the heat was intense enough to feel through the windows 15 feet away.

97 I said I'm not defending EVs. Just pointing out a stat that can derail a debate with EV advocates. Its the fact that the fires are far more intense and dangerous that should be the focus and not that they just are prone to catch fire.

Posted by: polynikes at May 19, 2025 11:14 AM (VofaG)

I think that both are important.

These EVs are, on average, less than 5 years old. Mainly because their usefulness severely drops at 8, IIRC.

That VERY new cars carry a non-insignificant risk a fire is bad.

ANY car fire puts the structures it is in at risk. That the fire cannot be put out with conventional means is MUCH MUCH worse.

I had a used Volvo (a '75; this was in '85) burn up while I was driving it.

To be accurate, it *started* burning as I was driving. Mrs. Wolfus No. 2 told me later there were flames licking out from under the dash. I pulled over, we leaped out and ran to a safe distance, and watched my car burn from end to end.

Apparently there was a known fault on that generation of Volvo, where a fuel line could break or its rubber connectors come loose. I'd seen fuel spurting on the windshield just before the fire started, so QED.

This is indisputably, unambiguously, wrong.

I was pumping gas in my car and looked in the parking lot at a car in front of me. It started smoking and within a minute was engulfed in flame. It was an ICE car, the ignition was off, it spontaneously erupted in flames while parked. Right in front of my eyes.

A house 1/4 mile down the street from me burned to the ground when an ICE car with the ignition off parked in the garage spontaneously erupted in flames.

So it happens.

175 ICE Vehicles: 1,530 fires per 100,000 cars sold.
EVs: 25 fires per 100,000 vehicles sold.
Hybrid: 3,475 fires per 100,000 vehicles sold.

The thing with ICE fires - they tend to have the driver in them when they go up (while in use) or shortly after they shut down... and less likely as they could down.

The biggest different - ICE vehicles all have safey devices (fuel pump shutoff) for them to stop feeding fuel to the fire while EVs the fuel is almost always the fire.

Posted by: Warai-otoko at May 19, 2025 11:26 AM (VoAdT)

1. The batteries on most hybrids aren't that large.
2. I read something about the danger being that the battery was located near the hot engine - it isn't.
3. I read a different thing about the danger being that the battery was located near the fuel tank - which doesn't normally get hot.

My guess is that the stats include fires as a consequence of a collision or other damage.

Yes and no. There seems to be no dispute that Epstein was in very good spirits and thought he would win the case. In fact, he had a meeting with this lawyers almost immediately before he died, and he was especially optimistic.

That doesn't mean he didn't kill himself, but add that up with all the impossibly-coincidental happenings on the night of this death -- every single one of which resulted in no surveillance or proof of what happened -- and the very odd display on the gurney after his death, and I think it's 90% likely that he was murdered.

240 Built in sprinkler systems won’t put out an EV battery fire anymore than a sprinkler system would put out a grease fire in your kitchen.

Right, EV fires are a triple nightmare. Firefighters hate them. Not only do they take special equipment to fight, because standard fire suppression techniques and systems don't work, but they emit horrendously deadly gasses while burning, and finally, the batteries don't all go up in a whoosh like gasoline, they burn individually, sometimes taking a day or more heating up and chemically combusting until they burst into open flame.

That's what happened when Richard Hammond wrecked the EV indy racer. It burned for a week, because these cars don't have one battery, they have dozens and each individual one burns on its own, causing the next to heat up and burn, and so on.

249 OT. Bad weather. We've been dodging the bullet in this area for awhile regarding catastrophic storms. The weather has been showing things getting sketchy for the next few days. I broke out my little gym bag, put the canvass portfolio with valuable papers in it, a few hundred bucks, a couple pistols, and my wallet goes in there at bedtime. Keeping the bag at bedside.

252 Also, the fact that the ship fired half of the professional crew so that they could get more cadets on board.

I had not read that, but honestly it probably wouldn't have mattered. Apparently they had an engine on their sailing ship as well, and it failed. The currents there are strong and without anything to push the ship one way, it goes the way of the current.

If you look, you'll notice that the ship is going backward which is always a horrendous event in a sailing ship, especially. It doesn't really matter who the crew are, they couldn't have stopped it. There was a tugboat on it trying to keep it from crashing into the bridge.

I mean, a better crew probably would have gotten the hell out of the masts better, but they couldn't have prevented the collision.

253 Maybe. But there's no reason to kill yourself before the trial and verdict. He could have beaten the rap, as he did once before. It's still amazing to me that his pimp/madame got convicted, despite no evidence of any girl being trafficked to any specific john.

I don’t know suicidal people are rational. I mean, even if he beat the wrap, this time there would be a lot coming out and lord knows what this man did between the last time he was facing court and this time. His friends in high places weren’t really there anymore (that we know of, anyway). He was also becoming quite the liability, he wouldn’t be able to do the gross things he was doing anymore. What is more interesting on Gislaine is that she hasn’t sung like a canary. Let’s start a new conspiracy theory- Epstein buried a ton of money somewhere, only Gislaine knows where and when out, she is going to quietly start digging.

Let a headwind push you backwards just to get some water flowing over the tiller so you can get turned back to where you can start sailing properly again. Reefing by accident is probably less than ideal. I don't know the boaty person words for this crap, but it is a thing.

Eh, I don't know. As many big wigs and big money guys were involved with Epstein, and given the fact that there have been literally multiple years between his death and this investigation,

there was certainly enough motivation, possible money, and time to jigger the records enough to make it look like Epstein really did kill himself, and-

Patel/Bongino fell for the faked evidence.

It's possible, but no way of knowing, unless a at this point fictitious conspirator talked.

No Carradine was jerking off. He had his testicles tied up. Hutchence had been arguing with Geldof and then had a desperate conversation with former girlfriend right before and told her he needed to see
her. The coroner considered accidental but the contrary evidence was significant.

Hutchence was in a brutal custody battle for his daughter and was likely never going to see her again and suicided because of it.
