CBD gave me grief because I continued his Mid-Morning Art Thread franchise on a Saturday. To be honest, I've been on a news boycott and there are no pressing issues to hash out as far as I am concerned. So here is a second art piece. It's by your's truly. It is 24"x30". This is a size outside my comfort zone. Which is normally 11"x14" or 12"x12". The piece is based upon a photo from FreePik. Maybe someone will purchase it when I'm dead and gone and the estate will be able to pay off CBD's outrageous royalties. And a Mystery Click to boot. ![]() Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

MH,
Love your painting. The dark evergreen trees against the snow and reflected light on the water isn't jarring, it's peaceful. I like the way you caught the feel of a winter thaw as the snow retreats from the water line and the colors in the calm water before snow melt makes the creek run faster. And the scene feels quiet, the only sound I can imagine would be a few soft bird calls. Posted by: JTB at May 10, 2025 10:23 AM (yTvNw) 67

Tissot is an interesting artist. His style reminds me of the Pre-Raphaelite painters with their attention to detail and rich colors. But his themes are not mythological or from classic literature, they are modern (for him) scenes of high society France. This one has a bit of humor in the inappropriately fashionable lady sitting on fancy cushions in an old rowboat. Her expression says "He's going to pay for getting me out here. We could be at the theater. And how am I gong to get out of this damn thing."
The pampered lap dog, a pug, sitting stiffly in the back of the boat adds to the humor. Posted by: JTB at May 10, 2025 10:33 AM (yTvNw) 90

Christopher Pelkey, then 37, lost his life after being shot during a 2021 road rage incident in Chandler, Arizona. Stacey Wales, the sister of Pelkey, created an AI-generated video of her brother who "expressed forgiveness," something "she wasn’t ready to do herself." (CNN) "The only thing that kept entering my head that I kept hearing was Chris and what he would say," Wales said to CNN. "I had to very carefully detach myself in order to write this on behalf of Chris because what he was saying is not necessarily what I believe, but I know it’s what he would think." People around here used to burn their trash. Burn barrel got full of ash and had to be emptied. Haul it out to a corner of the woods and dump it. If something didn't burn completely, oh well. If it couldn't be burned, it got taken to that same corner of the woods and dumped. Always made sure it wasn't near any streams of water or crop fields.
As kids we would go poke around these dump sites. I lost count of all the milk glass lids for mason jars we found. I have no idea what ever happened to that collection. Wish I still had it. There's nothing they can say that we haven't heard for 250 years now. It was one thing when Europe was vital and growing. It's risible now that they're a broken-down wreck of a continent. Bankrupt aristocrats sneering at a prosperous tradesman.
And there's the answer. They're not happy that they're now the penniless failures at life sponging off their more successful relations. Posted by: Archimedes at May 10, 2025 11:34 AM (s8j++) 221

Im guessing a mistranslation. Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at May 10, 2025 12:01 PM (VofaG) a tenet of Catholic teaching is that we are always in a process of conversion until it's time we are called home even the most saintly among us have rough edges that need to be sanded I only became aware of this concept about 7 years ago, well into my reversion timeline . Pope Leo is referencing the APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION EVANGELII GAUDIUM of Pope Francis, especially item no. 9:
9. Goodness always tends to spread. Every authentic experience of truth and goodness seeks by its very nature to grow within us, and any person who has experienced a profound liberation becomes more sensitive to the needs of others. As it expands, goodness takes root and develops. If we wish to lead a dignified and fulfilling life, we have to reach out to others and seek their good. In this regard, several sayings of Saint Paul will not surprise us: “The love of Christ urges us on” (2 Cor 5:14); “Woe to me if I do not proclaim the Gospel” (1 Cor 9:16). Still early/fog of war/etc etc, but that ceasefire appears to have been of the very short term variety. We'll see, maybe things will settle down. Despite the impressive animus bordering on bats**t crazy on both sides WRT each other, not hard to see operations ending. This has been a series of punitive strikes, mostly. No action on the long-standing disputes underlying it all are even on the table.

When I was a teenager I sketched and tried painting with watercolors, but never did it daily as one should if one wants to get good. After college I sketched a little more and took a very brief course in oil painting focused on portraits.
Our second grandchild is in middle school and has natural artistic ability so I have been encouraging him for years to be a regular sketcher, but basketball and screen time gets in the way. I've ramped up the encouragement and recently got him a kit of gear including a skull and mannequin. I'm doing a head sketch each day in pencil and am getting so I can get a reasonable likeness. I am using photos of the grandkids. I watch a lot of videos and am amazed at the sessions I see, maybe 2 hours, of an artist doing a photorealistic portrait in oils. Absolutely amazing. I love listening to them as they describe the techniques of seeing, breaking down the subject into a connected group of values, the artist's term for shade, and then getting into the really fine details at the end.
