Well if you can have a milkshake but just haven’t in a long while there is a chain that just opened up in the county seat near me called Wayback Burgers. I have been experimenting with bread. Today's experiment involved cooking up a quarter cup of rice flour with a cup of water into gruel, letting it cool a bit, and mixing in amber malt and salt, letting it cool a bit more, and then adding yeast, a cup of water, and 5 cups of flour.
It makes a very sticky dough that makes a loaf that is almost as soft as store bread. apparently pre cooking the starch makes a nice gelatinized goo that really tempers the dough while rising. I get to try it with other starches to see what works best. Posted by: Kindltot at April 24, 2025 09:15 PM (D7oie) 171

I take Earl Grey in the afternoon, and sometimes make it a high tea. Problem: they don’t put any vitamin D in half and half because it is meant for adults. Only children’s milk is fortified. Solution: I take vitamin D2 in tablet form supplemented with vitamin K2. The K2 helps make sure the D2 goes where it ought to in the body, not into fat storage. Got to be careful about fat soluble vitamins like A and D!

It's not really a smiley face, more of a triangle, really, but you can kinda sorta say it sort of looks like it. Also, Neptune is right in the face too, so this is a 4 object conjunction. With a telescope, you could make out Neptune and its moons. You can start looking about an hour and half before local sunrise. Local sidereal time will be ~18:10. I'm too lazy to convert to local mean time, but it will be the same for everybody. The time offset from sunrise pins it down fine. I'm just too damned lazy to mess with cooking up starch...
Posted by: tcn in AK at April 24, 2025 09:28 PM (a4NoL) You can use potato water for the liquid if you want, it is a similar result. Left over mashed potatoes will work too. I usually use a cup of whole ground flour - I grind up wheat berries for this - and let them soak in two cups of water and yeast over night to do my bread, so taking 24 hours to bake bread is pretty standard here. The starch makes a softer bread that my wife loves. I like it tougher, though. Posted by: Kindltot at April 24, 2025 09:37 PM (D7oie) 198
>> Neat. What time did you find for that?
It will be 5:34AM when the ISS is right in the middle of the smiley face. Now, since the ISS is so close, parallax is YUGE. It would be quite different for Mike Hammer up there around Asheville, and even Miklos further down south. Anyone around the Greenville, SC area, you'd need to get Stellarium or equivalent to see what it would be exactly for your location. Once I get the garden in I can start doing baking stuff again. I have about a month of digging and improving before I can plant outside. We also have fences to take out, drainage to improve.... Well, I will get back to bread at some point. ![]() Posted by: tcn in AK at April 24, 2025 09:40 PM (a4NoL) 202

178 Steak and Shake fries are fried in beef tallow now.
Yeah they announce it on the menu. Wish they had some around here. I tried Cracker Barrel as well and damn that's good stuff as well. Definitely need that in my town, maybe not the tchotchkies and the front store but the menu, nothing really like that around here. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 24, 2025 09:18 PM (2VST1) Sigh, our Steak and Shake closed a few years ago. The only thing left is an abandoned building and a bunch of Tesla chargers since the site is right next to the freeway. Would love some of those fries now. - Rendevous was beginning to go off the rails but was still okay. The ones after that were pretty bad. That said, the two before that were fantastic. This is your captain, Shaneesha M'bwani. As the café makes its final approach to landing, please make sure your seatback is up, carry-ons are stored under your seat, and tray tables are up. Thank you for flying DEI airlines. Now, let's see if I can remember how to lower the landing gear. Wait. Is this still on?

I cheated and looked it up. Gateway was the first. Dang what a great book. From wikipedia:
"Nearly a thousand small, abandoned starships are located at Gateway (an asteroid). By extremely dangerous trial and error, humans have partially learned how to operate them. The controls for selecting a destination have been identified, but nobody knows where a particular setting will take the ship, how long the trip will last, or even if enough fuel is available to get back. Those who choose to risk their lives cram the limited space with equipment and hopefully enough food for the trip, but sometimes it is not enough, and they have to resort first to cannibalism, and if that is not enough, to suicide" Posted by: Boron Cobbie - Women chose the value of the vagina, men then chose the value of women at April 24, 2025 09:57 PM (+xH4m) Posted by: Helena Handbasket at April 24, 2025 10:01 PM (Vqx30) 217
