This stunning photo by Giorgia Hofer captures the position and phases of the Moon above the Cridola Group peaks in the Italian Alps during a synodic month

Dolphins dropped by to say hi to the astronauts abandoned by Biden and rescued by Trump and Elon Musk.

Sneezey the Tiger.

Thundering cuteness.

"Tiger Mom" Golden Retriever.

Hawk lands on a parachuter's helmet mid-fall.

I've linked this before, but: man takes his hawk out for a drive-and-fly.

The insane (medieval) engineering of Venice. The video says that because the piles that support the city are completely underwater, they are protected from rot and most of the piles are the same ones that were first pounded into the ground a thousand years ago. Wait -- wood doesn't rot underwater? What about barnacles and stuff?

An absolute mob of camels migrates along the beach.

Speaking of mobs: a mob of roo's invades Hole 12.

ICYMI: Camel tries to make frenz with a pack of horses.

Duck has a crush on a cow.

Bioluminescence.

The alpaca's name is Poochie.

Very deceptive picture -- no, those aren't black horses. They're the shadows of zebras you can't even see until you look real hard for them.

Border collies absolutely flying under stormy skies.

Dog enjoys a baby's toys.

Woman rescues a dog.

Water spout. The top just kinda curls off into nowhere.

This is why you shouldn't bother buying toys for cats.

The figure-8 curve the sun traces out over the course of the year is known as the analema. A lot of interesting stuff, such as the Equation of Time can be seen geometrically from the shape. In taking morning and evening, not mean solar noon versions, you can see the dates of earliest and latest sunrise/sets based on when portions of the curve are tangent to the horizon, IIRC.

It's possible to get a lunar analema as well, but your notion of same time has to be based on a "mean lunar day", when the earth's rotation catches back up the mean position of the moon. That is about 50 minutes longer than a mean solar day, somewhere around there.

31 >>Wait -- wood doesn't rot underwater? What about barnacles and stuff?

Not just underwater, but in an mud. I think it has something to do with the pH. It is also anaerobic, but the bacteria that does break down cellulose (found in termites and ruminants) is a specific methanogenic bacteria which is anaerobic so it's not that even though that is what you always read when they find a roman ship in the mud that hasn't rotted. Maybe the lack of O2 keeps the woodworms away though.

Shipworms, aka Toredos would fall under the category of other stuff. They destroyed wooden ship hulls before the advent of copper sheathing. No, I don't know why the pilings haven't disintegrated, although the usual explanation is anaerobic conditions (low oxygen).

Fungi are probably the most important wood decomposers, near as I can tell. I keep a pretty big chip pile, and when it's turned, the fungus amungus smell is noticeable. A real earthy smell. Also, tons of white mycelia of various fungi.
But I know that when we chip out a tump, any chips left will bleach any grass growing over the chips, cause the bacteria that decompose it uses up nitrogen.
All I know.

A perfectly accurate summation.

We are going to live in very, very, very rough times. We can either allow America to sink under the control of the Communists, or we can save our nation. Posted by: Ben Had at March 21, 2025 08:07

About a million years ago (actually about 50 years ago), the Nature area of the Scout Camp I worked at found a hawk chick (it was pretty big) that had kind of been rejected by it's parents, or something like that. Some of the feathers had been sheared off, somehow.
They built a big hawk cage with chicken wire(outside, about the size of a small room) and fed the hawk various meat and stuff over the summer. The camper Scouts thought it was cool (it was). By end of summer, when we all went home, they set it loose. All the feathers had regrown.
