Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - March 5, 2025 [TRex]![]() Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. This is the Wednesday night ONT.![]() ![]() This includes providing archival records documenting the use of Nazi "ratlines." Ratlines were monetary and logistic pathways Nazis used to escape justice and flee to Latin America, including Argentina, following World War II. Abhishek M R sued the PVR Cinemas, BookMyShow and INOX for showing long ads of about 25 minutes before the movie began, which wasted his time. A consumer court now has ordered PVR to mention the exact time of the movie in the tickets and not the time when the commercials ads begin. According to the complainant, the long ads delayed the movie time and due to which he could not get back to work. The court said that "time is money" and no one has the right to benefit from someone else's time and money. The man requested damages for "causing mental agony," punitive damages for unfair business practices, and court costs. The court awarded him $230 in damages and $92 for legal costs. The article does not say what kind of job allows enough time for a mid-day movie break (if the movie runs on time). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

SpaceX Chief Executive Elon Musk, whose spaceflight company was tasked with bringing Williams and Wilmore home later this month, has repeatedly said the Biden administration 'abandoned' them for 'political reasons.'
Musk has also said that former president Joe Biden rejected his offer to bring the astronauts home early because it would've made Donald Trump and his supporters 'look good.' During a Tuesday press conference, Williams and Wilmore were asked if the Biden administration did in fact decline Musk's offer to bring them home early, to which Wilmore replied that Musk's claim 'is absolutely factual.' I had heard the “no draftee Marines”, but I talked to some World War II Army veterans that said something about people being “poached” at the reception battalion or whatever very early on in the intake process. “Every 4th man take a step forward” that kind of thing. Bye!
I also read incidentally, when swearing in the military they have you take a step forward. That is the actual formal induction, so if you tried to get cute and refuse to take the oath, they already had you dead to rights for refusing a lawful order. Maybe this was a Viet Nam era bit of folklore. I do recall the take a step forward thing however. Posted by: Common Tater at March 05, 2025 10:13 PM (1biuY) 38

The summary of the Indian court win to the guy is incomplete -- he got 20K rupees for the "mental agony," 8K rupees for the legal fees, and 1 lakh (10,000,000) rupees for punitive damages. That's about $115,000 when converted to dollars.
500,000 rupees (about $5750) is considered a pretty good middle class annual salary there (or it was 10 years ago -- I know becuz my company paid my counterpart there that amount and he was ... not rich, but "comfortable"), so the 1 lakh is about 20 years or "good money" for the guy. In case you wondered. Which I'm sure no one did, but... i said it anyway. Posted by: pkudude99 at March 05, 2025 10:18 PM (1usj4) 51
Personal observation, July 1968. A couple hundred young men lined up to be either drafted or to volunteer for service. Since the Army ran the show, they had footprints on the floor. Just before the swearing in, some senior sergeant came in and told all the draftees to step back one line, leaving the first line empty. He called twelve names to the front row and informed them they were being drafted into the Marines. One of them actually wept. The Marines did NOT like draftees. I fooled the government. They thought they might get me for four years, but I stayed around for 23! Ha!

I knew. Dad had a couple of hard-bound collections of Addams' cartoons, the "family" and others. Great stuff to warp my young mind. I was a little disappointed in the somewhat sanitized TV show version, but it had its own charms and quirks - especially Morticia. None of the characters had names before the show. Addams suggested something else, IIRC, but John Astin held out for "Gomez." Posted by: mindful webworker - mmmmmmm Carolyn Jones at March 05, 2025 10:36 PM (xDimz) 85

Good evening AOP. How goes the bodging?
Posted by: TRex at March 05, 2025 10:30 PM (IQ6Gq) I did drywall work on the house today. Whittle it down a little. I am going to try to bodge a tiny little red-dot optic onto a vintage H&R model 922 I recently got. Some other guy (not me!) already drilled and tapped a pair of holes in the top strap, so I can use those, and not do any more defacement of the piece. I now have to get me a little set of metric taps and dies. Well, taps, anyway. I knew. Dad had a couple of hard-bound collections of Addams' cartoons, the "family" and others. Great stuff to warp my young mind. I was a little disappointed in the somewhat sanitized TV show version, but it had its own charms and quirks - especially Morticia.

Well speaking of RUSH, I went to a RUSH show tonight in Redbank NJ. The band was called Rush tribute project. They were great. Drummer was nuts on, even did Pearts drum solo. My only complaint, the guitar player was using PRS guitars, even for the older songs. Bad move, sounded like ass. No cut, strings sounded jumbled. They don't have big cavernous lifeson tone he had on the early stuff. He grabbed a gibson double neck for Xanadu and the guitar tone improved immensely. That boy needs to get himself an ES335 for the older stuff. Well thats what I did for Doof's birthday. lol

It's a mistake to trust any gazan. Hell any Palestinian from the area. They have been encouraged by their fellow Muslims to hate Jews for so long that there is no erasing it.
One of my great nephews is engaged to a girl who is ethnically half Mexican, half Palestinian. Born here. His airheaded mother has been telling me she's half Persian. Both start with a "P", don't you know, so how was she to remember which was which, oh, and they're both Arab countries, so what's the difference? 🙄🙄🙄 Why yes, she's an elementary school teacher in California, why ever do you ask? Anyway, the young lady seems very nice. Very laid back, polite, dry humor. Haven't met her mother, but my SIL says she's also very nice. Barely any accent and very well dressed, she says they're very well off and she doesn't think they're in the least bit religious, because they're constantly doing things on Sunday. 😵💫She wasn't sure about Friday and wondered why I asked. 😶😶 She then proceed to describe recent evening gatherings that sound like Iftar to me. Which is no big deal, I have Muslim friends who do the Ramadan thing half heartedly around their grandparents. Trying not to worry unduly. Facility called me this afternoon to inform that he will have an psych evaluation, and hopefully then be able to receive calming medication. Posted by: JQ at March 06, 2025 02:01 AM (rdVOm) Posted by: Blonde Morticia at March 06, 2025 02:06 AM (58PdW) 256

I've seen those sudden obsessions with "going home" but usually they are a passing or intermittent thing. I've seen very skilled and patient caretakers calm clients down with ice cream, a comfortable chair over here, whatever. JQ, I always held hub's hand and told him that I wanted to go home too and we would, just as soon as some disaster got fixed. These conversations went better if I brought him Dairy Queen or a nice piece of pie or something that he really liked. I asked his doctor for a calming medication long before he went into the home. For him it only seemed to increase his agitation and I stopped giving it to him.

Posted by: JQ at March 06, 2025 02:23 AM (rdVOm) - 1. Surely there is a sane forum on the Web somewhere where you can chat with people who've been there and done that. You need advice from experienced normal people and families. This is not only about misery loving company. This is about reaching an educated decision. 2. Once you've made a decision to do whatever is right, stick to it. 3. This is not your fault. It's very important that you tell yourself that. 4. Remember that no matter how outwardly different your husband has become, inside somewhere, invisible to all of us, is the same soul that was there from the beginning. Just do the best you can for it under the circumstances. Posted by: Biden's Dog sniffs a whole lotta malarkey, at March 06, 2025 02:31 AM (P3X50) 266

JQ, good night and sleep well. My hubs was in hospice care for for six months before he died, they were very kind and supportive. Whatever you choose is the right decision for you and for him.
Blonde Morticia, I loved the Jersey girl rant, I have seen similar things today. I have joined other forums. I have read every medical website and article I could find, ever since hub's diagnosis 4 years ago. The doctors said *then* that he had less than 6 months. Well, here we are! But I think it's 'for real' now... Up until the end of January, I was managing it all while hubby kept slipping mentally and finally couldn't handle him anymore. Sorry if I've overstepped a boundary. Just seems some people are allowed to talk about problems, but maybe I'm not one of them? Posted by: JQ at March 06, 2025 02:52 AM (rdVOm) 273
Watching the historic Celtics game last night,
I saw that Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla had ashes in the form of a cross on his forehead. Joe's a strong Catholic from Rhode Island... Joe brought some luck to the Celtics, because for the first time in their history they had two players scoring more than 40 points each: 19 3-pointers between Payton Pritchard and Derrick White.... My cousin's mother left this life in a similar manner. The moment Cuz knew Mom needed full time care is when she got loose and went up and down the street for some sugar and eggs to make cookies. Degree of difficulty: she was stark naked. It took a few months for things to calm down in the neighborhood. Posted by: JQ at March 06, 2025 02:52 AM (rdVOm) Gracious, no! I think it's just a matter of who is still up this time of night/morning. You keep right on talking about whatever you need to - I flit in and out at this time, but I always end up reading what you write. Sometimes you have already gone to bed by the time I check back in, so I don't always reply. You keep right on telling us what is going on - goodness knows you need to talk to someone about stuff, just to keep from going nuts! Love you, and think about you often 😊😊😊 Do they think that the dementia is related to the liver disease, or are they mutually exclusive? {{{JQ}}} I posted a long reply to you but it is out in space somewhere.
Keep posting here my friend, this is what kept me sane for the longest time. I went to the Texas MOME for the first time in 2021. I was at wit's end, lied to my kids about what I was doing because they wouldn't understand. I needed to get away and the Horde had become my online family night after night. It was the very best thing that I have ever done for myself. The Horde is real, and it is spectacular. I have never met a more genuine and caring group of people in my life, many of whom I call friends. Keep posting and keep the faith!!! Hubs liked to 'wander' while I was asleep. Luckily, the mental issues struck during Winter, and he gets chilled very easily so didn't go outside naked LOL.
But he would get into stuff-- like a toddler-- just paw through the linen closet & throw everything on the floor, or open the pellet-heater & stare at the fire (!), or urinate in the laundry room, thinking it's the bathroom... Posted by: JQ at March 06, 2025 03:12 AM (rdVOm) 281
Do they think that the dementia is related to the liver disease, or are they mutually exclusive?
Posted by: Teresa in Fort Worth -------- The dementia is definitely related to liver disease. His liver is no longer able to filter out toxins, particularly ammonia, that affect mental processes. That's why he is now incontinent and losing his reasoning abilities. Lactulose & rifaximin help, by flushing out or preventing the formation (respectively) of ammonia in the digestive tract. They worked very well, at first. Now? Less. And less. Posted by: JQ at March 06, 2025 03:17 AM (rdVOm) 282

Hubs has no special diet. Just a "no butter knife" order, because he cut off his door-alarm ankle bracelet with a butter knife last week. ![]() Posted by: JQ at March 06, 2025 03:29 AM (rdVOm) 285

Dr's used to want ESLD patients to cut back on protein, because it creates more ammonia (? I think) but I read that they've reversed that now.

JQ, I will admit to asking that question for a very selfish reason - I assume the end stage of this cancer will involve liver failure. I don't have cirrhosis, so I don't know if it will happen in the same way as your husband's is. I was hoping to be able to die at home when the time comes - this cancer is so rare and aggressive that there aren't any support groups of people with the disease, just their loved ones. They are skittish about details....
