Road Trip Season is Approaching Springtime is almost here. Time to start making or fine tuning those road trip plans. To help you out, here's one guy's take on the 10 most scenic drives in the US.
(Not so) Helpful Driving Tip For The Rest of Winter
Tomorrow is Mardi Gras. No matter what you do/show to acquire your beads (The ONT will not judge), here's a suggestion for reusing them in case of slippery roads. (The ONT has not tested this - proceed at your own
For those unaware - "Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday" and is the celebratory carnival that leads up to the beginning of Lent, the season of fasting and penitence. It gets its name from the practice of consuming foods that would be forbidden during Lent leading up to the beginning of the fast on Ash Wednesday".
History Tidbit

Without any shots to hear around the world, a little-known and heated standoff marked the opening of America’s Revolutionary War. Read the whole thing. Very interesting. How many of you were aware of this historical event?
On this date in 1986: Metallica released their highly influential third album, Master of Puppets
Rick Beato's "What Makes This Song Great?" breakdown of the title song
On this date in 2012: American rock guitarist Ronnie Montrose died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the age of 64
Saw this on X recently with the caption "Who is missing?"
![]() First thoughts - Alex Lifeson (of course) and Peter Frampton should be on there.
Who else should be on there? Who should be removed?

Over 73% of Americans approve of what DOGE is doing b/c they’re sick of paying taxes to fund these thieves This is why we need the DOGE Act - to make these fraud protections permanent Biden passed the “Inflation Reduction Act” (which did the opposite) under reconciliation Trump will have the DOGE Act as a permanent check on government waste and corruption Get it done Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at March 03, 2025 10:17 PM (rBOY7) 71

Metallica covered a medley of Mercyful Fate songs (and it rocks). Denis Pauna, who likes to reimagine songs as if performed by others, has done a version of Master of Puppets if was performed by Mercyful Fate:
https://tinyurl.com/bfdshxvc There are some great Mercyful Fate sounds in this one. By the way, if you are a metalhead and get a chance to go to a King Diamond show (Mercyful Fate's frontman's band), don't miss it. The goth honeys cone out of the woodwork for him. Wall to wall spooky chicks, and it's glorious. Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at March 03, 2025 10:31 PM (zMwmR) 132

George Harrison, gone. Just because you did it first didn't mean you did it best. Beatle nostalgia FTL. "The Edge," gone. Who thinks of U2 as a guitar band? And using a nickname is pretentious. You're no Buckethead, sir. Joey Ramone, gone. The whole "punk" aesthetic was the inability to compose or play anything. You're the Rothko of McDonaldses. Angus Young, gone. You're known for wearing kindergartener's clothes, hopping around like a beheaded chicken, and whatever that singing-like thing you do is. Guitar playing, feh. Posted by: TecumsehTea at March 03, 2025 10:36 PM (Eo96p) I corrected myself in that it wouldn't be a "transfer" per se, but, rather, I could apply, be interviewed, and accepted for a completely different position within the same agency which would be the least bad option. There's currently one such position open for which I'd be qualified. There are other potential positions within other agencies, too, but I'm getting word that, outside the DoD, there's a hiring freeze that would actually preclude internal/inter-agency hiring. I cannot confirm that right now, though. However, it's all academic since I need my resume to apply to anything and I'm trying like hell to find it on top of dealing with everything else going on. Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at March 03, 2025 11:21 PM (VwHCD) I worked in Jersey twice. Both times, everybody who lived in Jersey thought Springsteen was a god. I never understood those people. Fun fact and full disclosure: I've kept a lot of clunkers in my collection (Status Quo,, e.g.; sorry, MisHum). The only album I ever sold was to my college dorm roommate, Springsteen's 'Born To Run'. Even then, I found that album to be so pretentious and just crap that I had to get rid of it; 'Born To Run' becoming a hit put an exclamation point on that desire as I heard it everywhere. I liked, not adored, Springsteen's first two albums, '. . . E Street Shuffle' more than '. . . Asbury Park', with 'Rosalita' from 'E Street' being a decent song. But I gave up on him with 'Born To Run'. He only confirmed his douchebaggery over time. Posted by: RickZ at March 03, 2025 11:45 PM (gKDq2) 310

BREAKING: Mayor Michelle Wu will be testifying to Congress Wednesday about her public defiance of federal round-ups of illegal aliens on welfare committing horrific violent crimes and selling drugs. No doubt she will claim, among other things, that everything is under control, and the illegals aren't the ones committing the crimes. Her own Boston Police Department would disagree. There's something in the BPD called the Boston Regional Intelligence Center (BRIC), which isn't quite as active as it used to be (probably because it was doing reports like this which infuriated the comrades & apparatchiks). Anyway, below are highlighted excerpts from the 2016 & 2017 Heroin Overdose Reports, with the highlighted section: "Who is Selling the Heroin?" Conclusion: Of those arrested in Boston for selling heroin, 65 percent were foreign born, and of those, 84 percent were Dominicans. Posted by: Mister Ghost at March 04, 2025 12:10 AM (TGPs7) 330

An absolute ball to drive through Dubois Wyoming down the Wind River Valley. The canyon road from Three Forks Montana to Great Falls through Helena al9ng the Missouri River.

Had the good fortune to do meet some friends in Grand Junction Colorado for long range shooting then drove north to Vernal Utah along a gorgeous mountain road. The next day after a brief visit to Dinosaur NP we headed up through NW Colorado towards and past the Green River Canyon. Stunning scenery. Saw Bison and Wild horses and appreciated the joy of driving in, and living as an American. We are truly blessed.

When in college my two buddies and I decided to get in my big Delta 88 and drive from Louisiana to Denver to go skiing. When we got outside of Amarillo it was pitch dark but the sky was lit up with more stars then I had ever seen. Absolutely awe inspiring. Anyway we continued to drive and after awhile my car started to sputter and finally just quit on us. It was about 3am or 4am so we decided just to sleep in the car until the morning. When the sun came up I stepped out of the car into another awe inspiring view of being surrounded by the Rocky Mountains . My car had stopped on us right at the top of Raton Pass. Apparently carburetors like a little air with their gas mixture. It had flooded out because of the altitude. That’s my most memorable road trip.

I like some of Trower's stuff, particularly 'Bridge of Sighs', but also his work with Procol Harum; 'Whiskey Train' is one helluva rocker with Trower letting loose (from their album 'Home'). But I've seen Trower and overall I find him rather boring as a performer. Just stands there with a lot of reverb. YouTube: Billy Cobham Brags On Tommy Bolin (it's short)
https://tinyurl.com/y7sxf2ky Bolin played on Cobham's 1973 Jazz Album of the Year, 'Spectrum'. In 1974, that album tracked to 26 on the BillBoard 200 of top (mostly pop/rock) albums which was not bad for a jazz album, a real crossover. Album put Bolin on the musical map, too, no doubt about it. Bolin was 22 when the album was rleased. Dead 3 years later after working in The James Gang, Deep Purple and putting out his own two solos. He left an amazing musical mark but boy oh boy what could have been. Another one with the drugs. Posted by: RickZ at March 04, 2025 02:54 AM (gKDq2) 411

When you see him play, you are hearing Steve Vai looped a second time. Ralph Machio played at about 90% speed while the camera is equally under-cranked. Often this is done in martial arts movies. The guy has more talent at guitar than karate. I can play Brian Setzer's Rock this Town if it is slowed a bit. Posted by: BourbonChicken at March 04, 2025 04:08 AM (lhenN) 425
There's nothing there but toothless, squeal-like-a-pig, mountain rednecks. Stay the hell away from that part of the country.
Fun thing I recently learned: you know how Lord of the Flies was actually the opposite of what happened when a group of boys were stranded on an island in real life? Turns out Deliverence is based on a true story, but it’s the exact opposite of what really happened. The liberal professor who wrote the book had a flat tire in deepest darkest Kentucky in the 50s. The rednecks helped him get to a motel, buy and mount a new tire, and go on his way with a proper breakfast. Posted by: Ian S. at March 04, 2025 04:11 AM (QZThv) 426

Edge plays the same chords in every song. Steve Howe can play it all and never forget Terry Kath, one of the best ever

Missing guitarists: Glenn Campbell (He was the studio guitarist for most of these musicians) and maybe Roy Clark (just because!!)

Steve Howe from Yes was voted best guitarist of the year in Guitar Magazine's annual poll FIVE YEARS IN A ROW! That's a poll largely voted on by guitarists who subscribe to the magazine.
