Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Music Thread: Best Songs? This Should Be Easy!![]() [Garrett's camping Crocs] Well, this one is sort of a cheat, because I'll be damned if I knew any of their other stuff until I had the idea for this post. And after exhaustive research, yes, Let Your Love Flow by The Bellamy Brothers is in fact their best song! I am always surprised when seemingly rational people have a visceral reaction to The Rolling Stones. Are they the greatest band ever? Eh. No. But they have been around for a very long time and have produced probably 20 absolutely fantastic songs that have stood the test of time. And this is the best one! Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones Speaking of surprises...I was surprised when I learned how many of The Beach Boys songs were covers! That's not a criticism, because I love covers, and am fascinated by how different the same song can be when played by different people. And yes, Sloop John B by The Beach Boys is a cover, and a great song. I remember listening to Quadrophenia and Tommy and being blown away by how wonderful the long form can be. Love, Reign O'er Me, by The Who is a keeper, and if not their best, it's in the top five! 10,000 songs, and I have discovered that I like about five of them. But Ripple, by The Grateful Dead is a great song, and one that was my entree into their music. Great group. Maybe less known now than in their heyday, and Cotton Fields by Creedence Clearwater Revival is one of their less well known songs, but also fantastic. Most of you have never heard much Southside Johnny, and some who have lump them in with New Jersey's better known but far less genuine rockers (Springsteen and Bon Jovi). Trapped Again by Southside Johnny And The Asbury Jukes is a classic, loads of fun, and displays a startling musicianship. That's my current list, so have at it! Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I know it is pathetic to admit as a Moron, but I like almost every song that went up the charts by a "one hit wonder".
I know they are not great music craft. However, almost all of them are great earworms (to me), and that somehow at least qualifies them as "good" music in my pathetic Idiot mind. Posted by: Pillage Idiot at March 01, 2025 07:44 PM (Q4Dc6) 11

I grin like an idiot every time I hear Johnny B. Goode.
It's on the Voyager disk, next to one of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. I always imagine the Bach's immortal Third Brandenburg playing as Vee-ger falls into the gravity well of Neptune. And then it comes blowing out of the darkness of it's final planetary slingshot... ...the windows down, the stereo cranked up to 11, and Johhnny B. Goode blaring as it heads out of the solar system, letting everyone know (someday) The Americans Had Good Tunes. Posted by: retropox at March 01, 2025 07:51 PM (rMxB2) 31

Best BeeGees song, IMO, is either Stayin Alive, or Nights on Broadway.
Back then, I thought myself too cool to enjoy the BeeGees. I was in the Disco Sucks crowd, and was pretty wedded to my reputation. I was a stupid teenager. Sometime in the 80s, I heard an interview with Alice Cooper, and he was praising the BeeGees. I decided if Alice Cooper could admit loving the BeeGees, then I could, too. My other weird "best songs" trigger, is songs that are strongly associated with a crush as a youngster, or actual girlfriends in high school and college.

Then there are bands whose "best songs" are concept albums. But it seems like cheating to call 60-80 minutes of music a single song. But you lose the story if you just cut out one piece, and it stops being their best "song."

I'm avoiding trying to list anything in 'classical' music. Too many possibilities but assume Bach or Vivaldi and earlier periods. But then I think of more recent pieces like Barber's Adagio (heartbreakingly poignant) and Vaughan Williams' Lark Ascending or Fantasia On Greensleeves and Dvorak's New World Symphony.
So much beauty, so little time. Posted by: JTB at March 01, 2025 08:49 PM (yTvNw) 216

If you like the Beach Boys, their UK concert at Knebworth in 1980 has some of their best live performances (IMNSHO), and was the last time the original Beach Boys played live in the UK. It was also one of the few times Lady Lynda was performed live (and it has a shortened version of Cotton Fields, CBD).

Couldn't even begin to narrow it down...
But there are plenty of songs that I'm perfectly happy to listen to again even if I've heard 'em a zillion times. A lot of Motown, a lot of The Association's stuff, a lot of Sinatra particularly his collaborations with Antonio Carlos Jobim, a lot of Nancy Lamott, Vivaldi's Four Seasons, Chopin's Nocturnes, a lot of Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 (can't remember Lani Hall singing anything I didn't enjoy). Lot of Simon & Garfunkel (and AG's solo album Breakaway has some lovely stuff on it). Johnny Rivers, Roy Orbison, Dell Shannon... Someone mentioned Stephen Stills' Change Partners -- a nice one, but the Stills that really worked for me (think it's on the same album) was To A Flame. YMMV. And the best cover I ever heard of any song was Michelle Martin singing The Youngbloods' 'Get Together' at a demonstration in the Carlinville Illinois town square in '68 or '69. Wonder what ever happened to her. Posted by: Just Some Guy at March 01, 2025 08:58 PM (q3u5l) 252

Is music still a force on radio? Serious question. I don't care for much recent country (forget the 'western' part) and the classic rock stations seem to play the same songs over and over. The local classical station gets most of my radio music listening and I can hope they don't do a Straus or Tchaikovsky marathon.

Written and released by Mickey and Silvia in 1952, kind of an early r&b band. Nicolette Larson released a great version late sixties maybe. Hmmm, so many to choose from. From the top of my head, no particular order
Arriving Somewhere But Not Here - Porcupine Tree "Blackest Eyes." But they've got too dang many good songs. Ghost of Perdition - Opeth Hessian Peel? Coil? Porcelain Heart? I really like the "Watershed" album. Their non-metal stuff on "Damnation" is good too. The Count of Tuscany - Dream Theater Again with the too many choices. I cheated above and said "Scenes From a Memory." A concept album counts as one song, right? I've always loved Baby Blue, by Badfinger. The bass counterpoint really makes that song.

Great call on "Ripple". And once you start investigating the Dead they lead to so many different genres and great music due to how eclectic they were.

also not a rush fan. but i like that pert was a motorcyclist. and i saw lee on some program, maybe sctv, and he was very self deprecating. they were great on trailer park boys as well. i just don't like their songs much.

i have a radio station- wdpt- the call letters are for we don't play that, and 90% of the first one hundred comments above would qualify to be completely ignored. some because they are terriblest and some, while great, have been overplayed by the dead rockstar stations.
i'm going with anything off of either here come the warm jets or taking tiger mountain by strategy. early 70s eno solo work. Posted by: cmeat at March 02, 2025 02:59 PM (6+aIJ) 515
southside johnny's go home song is a springsteen cover.
i find the kinks discography way more compelling than stones or beatles, but my sisters ruined that shite. if you like covers look into me first and the gimme gimmes, punky to be sure, but way fun.
