Music Thread: Best Songs? This Should Be Easy!

campingcrocs.jpg
[Garrett's camping Crocs]

Best song? Not necessarily the best song ever, but I'll bet everyone has a favorite song of most groups.

Obviously groups like Rush aren't in the mix because all of their music is pathetic, so for them the calculation is more like "least awful." But...most music fans have their favorites, which undoubtedly change with the years and seasons, so the following is by no means on my permanent record!

***

Well, this one is sort of a cheat, because I'll be damned if I knew any of their other stuff until I had the idea for this post.

And after exhaustive research, yes, Let Your Love Flow by The Bellamy Brothers is in fact their best song!

***

I am always surprised when seemingly rational people have a visceral reaction to The Rolling Stones. Are they the greatest band ever? Eh. No. But they have been around for a very long time and have produced probably 20 absolutely fantastic songs that have stood the test of time.

And this is the best one! Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones

***

Speaking of surprises...I was surprised when I learned how many of The Beach Boys songs were covers! That's not a criticism, because I love covers, and am fascinated by how different the same song can be when played by different people.

And yes, Sloop John B by The Beach Boys is a cover, and a great song.

***

I remember listening to Quadrophenia and Tommy and being blown away by how wonderful the long form can be. Love, Reign O'er Me, by The Who is a keeper, and if not their best, it's in the top five!
***

10,000 songs, and I have discovered that I like about five of them. But Ripple, by The Grateful Dead is a great song, and one that was my entree into their music.
***

Great group. Maybe less known now than in their heyday, and Cotton Fields by Creedence Clearwater Revival is one of their less well known songs, but also fantastic.
***

Most of you have never heard much Southside Johnny, and some who have lump them in with New Jersey's better known but far less genuine rockers (Springsteen and Bon Jovi). Trapped Again by Southside Johnny And The Asbury Jukes is a classic, loads of fun, and displays a startling musicianship.
***

That's my current list, so have at it!

10 I know it is pathetic to admit as a Moron, but I like almost every song that went up the charts by a "one hit wonder".

I know they are not great music craft.

However, almost all of them are great earworms (to me), and that somehow at least qualifies them as "good" music in my pathetic Idiot mind.

30 I grin like an idiot every time I hear Johnny B. Goode.

It's on the Voyager disk, next to one of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos.

I always imagine the Bach's immortal Third Brandenburg playing as Vee-ger falls into the gravity well of Neptune.

And then it comes blowing out of the darkness of it's final planetary slingshot...

...the windows down, the stereo cranked up to 11,
and Johhnny B. Goode blaring as it heads out of the solar system, letting everyone know (someday) The Americans Had Good Tunes.

37 Best BeeGees song, IMO, is either Stayin Alive, or Nights on Broadway.

Back then, I thought myself too cool to enjoy the BeeGees. I was in the Disco Sucks crowd, and was pretty wedded to my reputation. I was a stupid teenager.

Sometime in the 80s, I heard an interview with Alice Cooper, and he was praising the BeeGees. I decided if Alice Cooper could admit loving the BeeGees, then I could, too.

So much beauty, so little time.

There's a box set with just vocal and instrumental tracks, many of which have snippets of the various takes that were made.

The vocals-only track of Wouldn't It Be Nice, with the harmony vocals of the first two lines of the second verse is perhaps their masterpiece. You can barely hear it (and can't really appreciate it) in the release version.

251 Couldn't even begin to narrow it down...

But there are plenty of songs that I'm perfectly happy to listen to again even if I've heard 'em a zillion times.

A lot of Motown, a lot of The Association's stuff, a lot of Sinatra particularly his collaborations with Antonio Carlos Jobim, a lot of Nancy Lamott, Vivaldi's Four Seasons, Chopin's Nocturnes, a lot of Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 (can't remember Lani Hall singing anything I didn't enjoy). Lot of Simon & Garfunkel (and AG's solo album Breakaway has some lovely stuff on it). Johnny Rivers, Roy Orbison, Dell Shannon... Someone mentioned Stephen Stills' Change Partners -- a nice one, but the Stills that really worked for me (think it's on the same album) was To A Flame. YMMV.

And the best cover I ever heard of any song was Michelle Martin singing The Youngbloods' 'Get Together' at a demonstration in the Carlinville Illinois town square in '68 or '69. Wonder what ever happened to her.

Interestingly, I replaced the subwoofer in the old Lincoln, today. I had to. The "system" is designed to work with a sub or the speakers sound like tin cans with strings.

Lots of junkyards all over the country sell parts on ebay, so I replaced a 24 year old subwoofer with...a 24 year old subwoofer.

I should've just "repaired" the speaker with a foam ring replacement. Oh well...

"Blackest Eyes." But they've got too dang many good songs.

Ghost of Perdition - Opeth

466 There's a YouTube interview with Tom Scholtz from a couple years ago where he discusses at length the making of the album. One of the few long form interviews he's done. Very interesting.

That's a fantastic interview.

And now the sun's coming up
I'm riding with lady luck
Freeway cars and trucks
Stars beginning to fade, and I lead the parade
Just a-wishing I'd stayed a little longer
Lord, don't you know the feelings getting stronger

472 Nearly every song from "Live Johnny Winter And" is a cover far superior to the original (e.g., "Good Morning Little School" Girl, "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Johnny B. Goode").
Posted by: antisocial justice
=====
First Winter also great. Parchman Farm, 32-20, Bad News. All great covers.
Saw one of Johnny's last shows a few years ago at the Met, Pawtucket. Had to be led out to his chair, but could still play just fine.

Lol - I listened to the original S&G version on 45 when I was very young- far too young to really understand it. But it was somehow formative.

Fast -forward a few decades, and I was a fan of Disturbed from their first album onward. But when they covered that song, it was like I truly heard it for the first time....

Posted by: Thesokorus at March 01, 2025 10:03 PM (z6Ybz)

No. More classic metal. there is a difference, according to metal-heads. Some guy actually did a very complicated flow chart of what kind of metal is what. You have metal, thrash metal, black metal, death metal, Nu metal (posers), and so on. And there are the European metal genres (Norwegian is different than Swedish and German). it's a weird world. But fun.

493 Speaking of "Live Johnny Winter And"

Rick Derringer is the Zelig of rock. As a teen he was the Real McCoy behind "Hang on Sloopy" He and other McCoys backed Johnny Winter on "And"

He kills on Alice Cooper's Under My Wheels.

And Fagen/Becker recruited him to play on Dan records.
