Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at February 23, 2025 02:03 PM (/lPRQ) Speaking of nifty gadgets...I bought a card with three little lamps on it at O'Reilly's last week. Six bucks. Each is a fat disc about the size of three quarters stacked. Contain two CR2032 lithium cells, a 50-lumen LED, and a toggle switch. Double-face tape on the back. I stuck a rare-earth magnet to one of them, and used it as a worklight while working under the dash of a car. Gave me plenty of light to do the work, and took up almost no space. Could easily be moved around and glommed onto a handy piece of metal to direct its beam where most needed. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 23, 2025 02:11 PM (8zz6B) 29

I have a confession to make involving clocks (and timers):
Years and years ago I worked for a shady operation in the insurance industry that had a tendency to take advantage of employees. I ended up being on call 24 hours a day for emergency catastrophe situations three weeks straight. We're talking truck wrecks, commercial fires, weather events...you name it. My sleep schedule was nil for nearly three weeks. So, I quit and went to a different company. However, the night before handing in my resignation I went into the office and hid Thermo Pro Kitchen clock/timers throughout the office. I had four of them, and two went above the ceiling tiles. Others were hidden away in file boxes. I then set the alarms to go off months into the future. Some were set over a year into the future. And, the alarm feature allowed you to adjust the length. So, they wouldn't find it on the first alarm. I only regret that I didn't stay in touch with anyone there to get feedback on that incessant beeping that seemed to pop up for no reason. 89 The Pope has "mild" kidney failure. Everything is failing . Let the man rest in peace
Posted by: Smell the Glove at February 23, 2025 02:30 PM (cMcMn) Kidney failure with a life-threatening respiratory infection is a situation that becomes almost impossible to treat b/c your kidneys need to filter the toxic meds for the infection and if they can't, and dialysis is needed, a lot of meds can't be used. So, it's not looking good right now. I told the spouse when I heard the respiratory infection involved fungal elements, this was gonna be the last illness, b/c for immune-deficient folks (like the old and those with immune cancers), fungals in the respiratory airway are almost impossible to beat...even if you temporarily get them under control, they don't go away and will beat you, whether it takes days or months... When I got rid of cable did the same thing - kept looking for the clock. Went on Amazon, found a small USB-powered clock in a black case (the digits were about the same size and color) and put it where the box was. Perfect! Only problem is now I have to change it twice a year...
Speaking of getting rid of the box - we signed up for Verizon 5G that came in a small box (no wires! Yea!) and I run it through my own meshed wireless system. Works great - I can run work-from-home computer, home computer, and family has run two TVs with no issues. Love it! Posted by: JamminJames at February 23, 2025 02:42 PM (sQ3C7) 117

For reasons our router is at the end of the house, nearest our neighbor (no neighbor on the other side, but no access to the internet feed either).
I bent a piece of cardboard to about 135 degrees (so it'll stand up on its own), covered it in aluminum foil to reflect the microwaves toward the rest of the house. Then I bought a couple of extenders to get around walls, etc. in the house. Now the whole house has wonderful WiFi connectivity, and you can get a tan from the microwaves. When upgrading from cable to optic, other upgrades may be needed. Old wifi antennas might not be up to the higher speed. Fortunately, fast usb antennas are available for cheap at Amazon. Remember how Winston Wolfe pops in from time to time to advise "WLNSSEODQY"?
Well, political guru James Carville forecasts Donald Trump's Administration will collapse within the next 30 days. The Democratic strategist told Mediaite's Dan Abrams that Trump's popularity is sinking, and he believes the administration will implode from a lack of public support. "I believe that this administration, in less than 30 days, is in the midst of a massive collapse and particularly a collapse in public opinion. What I have said very publicly is that Democrats need to play possum. This whole thing is collapsing. It doesn't need Elizabeth Warren and somebody screaming to pacify some progressive advocacy groups in Washington, which, by the way, I wish these people were just useless. They're actually worse than useless, that they're detrimental." He advised Democrats to lay low while the White House falls apart and predicted Republicans will find it difficult to pass any legislation and be forced to reach across the aisle for their support. "It's going to be easy pickings here in six weeks. Just lay back. We're in the midst of a collapse. It's over." Posted by: Duncanthrax at February 23, 2025 03:40 PM (a3Q+t) 218

14 - well, me, for one.
nice Casio G-Shock, solar powered and sets itself from GPS, so presumably accurate within milliseconds. Posted by: sock_rat_eez at February 23, 2025 04:06 PM (RP0h0) 255
I have been watching the German election coverage. The AfD, the so called "far right" party doubled their votes to 20%. You would think this would give the a place as part of the ruling coalition, Germany being a "democracy" and all. Nope.
The CDU, the SPD, The Greens, and the The Left parties have announced they are going to refuse to "work" with the AfD. Democracy be dammed, you stupid Germans are going to get more of the same as if that was ever in doubt: more stabby Muslims, more Ukraine, More dependence on Russian energy, and more EU boot licking. And most importantly more overt hatred of the US and Trump for blindsiding the Germans with the US no longer willing to subsidize their Socialists, Communists, Marxist, Globalist, Green New Deal, Open Border totalitarian nonsense. Felonious D without a doubt was a factor in this election. The next German Federal government is is going to be a fractured mess of utterly incompatible coalition members (most likely the CDU, SPD, and The Greens or The Left) hell bent to stab each other in the back while 20% of the population who voted for the now boxed out AfD is going to continue to hate them all. Aw crap, I'm late. Well, anyway, here's my solution for the no-clock problem. It worked for me!
Microwave ovens don't really have clocks, but they have a clock-style digital display. As you know, the new ovens come with a sticker over the display, so you can see what the display would look like if it was plugged in. I figured, I can just go where they sell microwaves, and get that sticker off the display model. Nobody will care if I just take a sticker. I had to go all over town, but I finally got a sticker with 00:00 on it. I put sticker that where my digital clock used to be, and it works really well! A nation that is politically fractured will have a hard time goose-stepping together. That takes practice and precision. I think my Vaterland is in big trouble.

Your fiber provider is ripping customers off if they are well over $100/month. We got our fiber installed for free (and it was a 500 ft run from their main line), and we are paying only $60 per month for 1 Gig service.
As for clocks... If you really need one all the time and don't have a cell phone, just buy a cheap Timex (or even cheaper Chinese knock-off) wrist watch. Posted by: DaveK at February 23, 2025 04:25 PM (23/Zl) 260
I use black Flex tape to cover my laptop camera. Much more durable than electrical or regular duct tape. Stays on in the bath or shower.

I wear a watch because it's also a voice phone and a text message display.
Handy if you hands are full. Also, supposedly calls an ambulance if my 29-year-old body goes into afib, or if I've fallen and I can't get up (remember those commercials?). I'm hoping I don't need those features any time soon. There are rumors that the next model will include a blood glucose monitor. If so, that's yet another thing I won't need any more. Watches are phones. Phones are televisions. I remember seeing a meme with a page from a '70s Radio Shack ad... phones, televisions, home weather stations, etc. Caption: "Everything on this page now fits in your pocket". But dogs are still not cats, and if you have a penis, or ever had one, you still are not and never will be a woman. There are limits here. For those of you with digital device lights on at night in your bedroom - even small LED dot inidcators, look up "sleeping in total darkness".

A man with one watch knows what time it is. A man with two watches can never really be sure.
