First World Problems...

There are two cable/internet providers in my area, and the one I have used for years was purchased by some horrid European company several years ago, then spun off, because it didn't suck quite enough.

Customer service went from great to maddening, and the quality of the internet service went from excellent to awful beyond compare. After two years of constant outages and pathetic and moronic techs telling me all sorts of bullsh*t stories, I told them to fix it or I will move to another provider. So they recommended switching to Fiber-Optic service, which they claimed had gotten good enough over the several years of its roll-out that it is now better than traditional co-ax.

Sounds great! Except they also told me that it would be more than $100/month more!

See ya!

And all is fine and good in Dildo world.

But... the big old cable box with the clock has been replaced with a tiny little unit and an even tinier junction box.

There is no clock.

THERE IS NO CLOCK!

Those little clocks have trained me over the years, and now that they are gone, it is as if there is no stability in the world. Wherever will I look for the time?

The stove? The microwave? My wrist?

Sure, but my eyes reflexively drift to the nonexistent cable box and its oh-so-convenient clock. I sure hope that I can be taught new tricks, but it isn't looking good!

Speaking of nifty gadgets...I bought a card with three little lamps on it at O'Reilly's last week. Six bucks. Each is a fat disc about the size of three quarters stacked. Contain two CR2032 lithium cells, a 50-lumen LED, and a toggle switch. Double-face tape on the back. I stuck a rare-earth magnet to one of them, and used it as a worklight while working under the dash of a car. Gave me plenty of light to do the work, and took up almost no space. Could easily be moved around and glommed onto a handy piece of metal to direct its beam where most needed.

Electrical tape. When I got tired of my stove clock running fast and having to reset it every 6 weeks, I put a strip of electrical tape over it. My microwave's clock is pretty accurate and very visible.

83 I'm a fan of the clocks that look like wood grain and the numbers shine through. Don't know why. Maybe they feel less clinical than the standard digital. Got one from Walmart and one from Anazon.

I also had an old Logitech Squeezebox as a clock near the couch, but once I shut down the server, the time drifted and couldn't be fixed easily. Bought a retro looking Seiko desk clock to replace it. The display is transparent except for the day and date, remp and humidity readings. Looks good.

90 I have a confession to make involving clocks (and timers):

Years and years ago I worked for a shady operation in the insurance industry that had a tendency to take advantage of employees. I ended up being on call 24 hours a day for emergency catastrophe situations three weeks straight. We're talking truck wrecks, commercial fires, weather events...you name it. My sleep schedule was nil for nearly three weeks.

So, I quit and went to a different company. However, the night before handing in my resignation I went into the office and hid Thermo Pro Kitchen clock/timers throughout the office. I had four of them, and two went above the ceiling tiles. Others were hidden away in file boxes. I then set the alarms to go off months into the future. Some were set over a year into the future. And, the alarm feature allowed you to adjust the length. So, they wouldn't find it on the first alarm.

I only regret that I didn't stay in touch with anyone there to get feedback on that incessant beeping that seemed to pop up for no reason.

Easily fixed with buying a clock and putting it in the spot where the cable box was. I have no shortage of clocks in my condo and yet I needed this clock in this spot. I think I have a problem.

Kidney failure with a life-threatening respiratory infection is a situation that becomes almost impossible to treat b/c your kidneys need to filter the toxic meds for the infection and if they can't, and dialysis is needed, a lot of meds can't be used.

So, it's not looking good right now.

I told the spouse when I heard the respiratory infection involved fungal elements, this was gonna be the last illness, b/c for immune-deficient folks (like the old and those with immune cancers), fungals in the respiratory airway are almost impossible to beat...even if you temporarily get them under control, they don't go away and will beat you, whether it takes days or months...

116 When I got rid of cable did the same thing - kept looking for the clock. Went on Amazon, found a small USB-powered clock in a black case (the digits were about the same size and color) and put it where the box was. Perfect! Only problem is now I have to change it twice a year...
Speaking of getting rid of the box - we signed up for Verizon 5G that came in a small box (no wires! Yea!) and I run it through my own meshed wireless system. Works great - I can run work-from-home computer, home computer, and family has run two TVs with no issues. Love it!

246 I think if you use chrome browser you don't need any special app for google meet. Our meetings are just tabs on my browser. I know, google is evil, but my work went to gmail instead of having their own mail server and in general is in thrall to google and chrome does work other than having to update itself 50 times a year or more.

You don't have to wonder what hour it is, it'll tell you on the hour every hour, very very LOUDLY. I hate that thing. It had been broken for many years and then one of my mom's old friends came to visit with her new husband. Said husband was mechanically inclined (may have been an engineer) and fixed the stupid thing. Now I have to deal with it whenever I visit my mom. Bleh.

255 I have been watching the German election coverage. The AfD, the so called "far right" party doubled their votes to 20%. You would think this would give the a place as part of the ruling coalition, Germany being a "democracy" and all. Nope.

The CDU, the SPD, The Greens, and the The Left parties have announced they are going to refuse to "work" with the AfD. Democracy be dammed, you stupid Germans are going to get more of the same as if that was ever in doubt: more stabby Muslims, more Ukraine, More dependence on Russian energy, and more EU boot licking.

And most importantly more overt hatred of the US and Trump for blindsiding the Germans with the US no longer willing to subsidize their Socialists, Communists, Marxist, Globalist, Green New Deal, Open Border totalitarian nonsense. Felonious D without a doubt was a factor in this election.

The next German Federal government is is going to be a fractured mess of utterly incompatible coalition members (most likely the CDU, SPD, and The Greens or The Left) hell bent to stab each other in the back while 20% of the population who voted for the now boxed out AfD is going to continue to hate them all.

Microwave ovens don't really have clocks, but they have a clock-style digital display. As you know, the new ovens come with a sticker over the display, so you can see what the display would look like if it was plugged in. I figured, I can just go where they sell microwaves, and get that sticker off the display model. Nobody will care if I just take a sticker.

I had to go all over town, but I finally got a sticker with 00:00 on it. I put sticker that where my digital clock used to be, and it works really well!

259 Your fiber provider is ripping customers off if they are well over $100/month. We got our fiber installed for free (and it was a 500 ft run from their main line), and we are paying only $60 per month for 1 Gig service.

As for clocks... If you really need one all the time and don't have a cell phone, just buy a cheap Timex (or even cheaper Chinese knock-off) wrist watch.
