Howdy Hordelings! Hope you enjoyed your Presidents' Day holiday. Sorry if you had to work today. The ONT is definitely NOT doing a Muttley laugh at your expense. Day off or not, please step on in to tonight's ONT!

Presidents' Day Content

Check out this 1732-2025 timeline of the lives of all 47 presidents.

How about some stuff you might not know? 45 Odd Facts About U.S. Presidents

2. Herbert Hoover invented his own sport.

Watch out, Calvin Coolidge Ball. To stay fit, Herbert Hoover and his personal physician invented their own sport: Hooverball. The game was a sort of cross between volleyball, tennis, and dodgeball, except much more terrifying, because it was played with a medicine ball.

***

12. Richard Nixon proposed to his wife the day they met.

Pro tip: that is not a good idea. Then he obsessively pursued Pat for two years until she finally said yes.

***

14. Richard Nixon's favorite snack was cottage cheese with ketchup.

***

28. Calvin Coolidge really didn't like talking.

His nickname, Silent Cal, was well-earned. Upon hearing the news of the notoriously quiet Calvin Coolidge's death, Dorothy Parker reportedly asked, "How can they tell?"

Check out the whole thing. It's a fun read!

Remembering the humorous side of Ronaldus Maximus.

President Trump should strongly consider this.

Florida Man!

Who doesn't love a good "Florida Man" story?

Florida Man Survives Gator Attack After Neighbors Drive Over the Beast With SUV

A pair of Florida residents are set to enjoy a show by former Tonight Show host Jay Leno as a deserved reward for snatching their neighbor from the jaws of death.

Or, perhaps it should read the jaws leased by death, because at the time they belonged to a massive American alligator that ran down Rick Fingeret walking his dogs down their Naples street.

Occurring after dark on Friday, April 19th of last year, Fingeret was passing a pond in which he had seen alligators lounging every so often, when he felt a tug on the leashes of his two dogs. They might have been Labradors, and fit for all kinds of emergency situations when trained, but this was an 11-foot-long gator, sprinting with its mouth open towards them at probably close to 10 miles per hour.

***

“I tripped in all the frenzy,” Fingeret remembered. “And the minute I fell—(he claps his hands together to simulate the gator’s jaws closing)… He got me.”

Apparently, the pair lay on the grass for several moments, the gator unsure of what to do next.

“Every so often, you’d feel a lurch,” Fingeret says. “A tug. He wanted to move me, but he couldn’t. I was bigger than he had anticipated. I wanted it to know that I was there. I had a lot of fight left in me. And I was very conscious of not passing out. Because the minute that would happen, I would be done.”

He started hammering at the beast’s scaley armor, poking its eyes, and trying to pry open its jaws without any luck.

Without a shadow of a doubt, the strangest part of the story came in the next part which Fingeret narrated—his dogs lay at his side, silent, and probably frozen in terror. Somehow he managed to keep a hold of their leashes through the entire ordeal.

Next, neighbors Walt Rudder and Paula Keegan were driving by when they saw and heard Fingeret on his side, next to his dogs, screaming for help. They thought he had fallen and broken something, but after the dogs moved a little, they saw that unmistakable shape unchanged for 300 million years.

Mr. Rudder ran over and described a “supernatural” level of calm from which Fingeret instructed his neighbor to gather up his dogs and put them in the car—and then run the lizard over with it.

129 Mahomes played both football and baseball at Whitehouse High, a bedroom community for Tyler. Here’s how good he was at baseball - he was the starting pitcher, and threw several no-hitters. In fact, when he was playing a typical next day writeup would be “Whitehouse defeated Longview, 2-0, Mahomes pitched a no-hitter, and Mahomes also had 1 home run, and 1 RBI.”
When Mahomes was on the field, it was like 1 guy playing the game and 17 guys standing around and watching him do his stuff.

Yes! I have always felt that the case of the old man is where the point they’re making really shines through. It’s not funny at all, it’s sad, and Phil had to learn that he can (and should be) kind, and ease the journey and suffering of others - but although he can comfort and help others, he has no power to alter someone’s else’s destiny, once it has been set. Demonstrating that his speculation that he is some kind of “god” is false and foolish; he only has the power to truly change his own destiny, not anyone else’s.

He said AOC is ther dumbest person ever to be elected to congress. Then it's also a slight to Mazi Hirono, a woman who defied the odds by being both Japanese, and a complete f'ing moron.

I think Tom needs to apologize and make it be known that there are absolute retards of all races in congress who rival AOC's level of window lickery.

See Pixy's thread from this morning (well, yesterday morning).

Some idiot claimed these "150 year olds" were due to COBOL using an epoch of 1875. That is, an invalid or unknown date would default to zero, which would be 1875 and thus 150 years ago. This was pure bullshit, turns out, but I'm still seeing idiots repeat this.

And that got me to trying to remember COBOL data storage and the PIC clauses.

Did COBOL just use ASCII or BCD for numeric types, I forget?

And then, the "P" specified I never groked, but I forget what was confusing about it. :-)

434 Accepting your premise about Musk, who is a genius? What does one have to do/be to be consdered a genius? Just curious.
Posted by: RickZ at February 18, 2025 01:38 AM (gKDq2)

Genius has no formal definition, but I would assume someone who has made a significant contribution to math, science or technology. Musk has brought the cost of launching stuff into orbit down significantly, but again, he’s mostly just hired people to do the technical work. He’s not a rocket scientist himself.

I think it’s impressive that he’s brought launch costs down. He did a lot to demonstrate how moribund NASA had become.

The rest of his companies are just grifts, usually on taxpayers. He didn’t invent the electric car, nor did he found Tesla. He did get the Obama and Biden admins to give him huge subsidies, though. I guess corruption could be a kind of genius.

He bought Twitter, which has lost him a lot of money, but has given him access to the levers of power. If he uses that access to destroy the Federal Leviathan, I’m happy. Hell, we can make his birthday a Federal holiday.

436 Re: Elon and his lack of marital status while making babies. The real rub is that the kids won't know a perfectly stable life with mom and dad. However, the real problem with single parents is that they cannot raise their kids in any stability and are usually dead broke for most of it. That is hardly going to be the case with any of Elon's kids. I suspect that mom will stay home and raise the kid. And hell, I know plenty of families that both parents work full time and the nanny or the daycare raises the kid. Not much better although they probably have enough money.

As a Catholic, I find it abhorrent when a kid is denied a decent family configuration. That doesn't change the facts that many kids don't get that.

None of this changes our need for Elon to go full bat-shit crazy on federal spending. As long as his kids are not on the dole, I suppose it really is his business.

After having completed his military service, he enrolled at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. . . . [He] "holds a master's degree in chemical engineering. Was offered a Fulbright scholarship to study at MIT." Lungren's said to have an I.Q. of 160, which is considered genius level. All I know is a masters in ChemE is not a basket-weaving degree.

474 I briefly worked with a genius who was slumming at the Space Center. He posed a challenge to a couple of teams of engineers to come up with a way to measure this incredibly small amount of charge.

I worked with another super smart engineer for a couple of weeks on an idea and we put together a prototype that had all the other engineers agreeing that this was the way to go.

We presented it to Dr. Bob and he took one look at the math etc and said "Nope". The lectured us for half an hour about why it wouldn't work. Not only things we didn't know about but things we hadn't even imagined that could be true.

There were some really bright guys sitting there with their mouths agape. He just completely blew everyone's mind. It took me a while to get over that. Dr Bob was on a completely different level.

He's the nicest guy but you don't want to cross him.

Elon seems to be incredibly bright and equally motivated which is rare.

I was asking you to name them, because you were asserted they were again, evidence of genius. Zip2 is a company nobody remembers which vanished without a trace.

X.com was moderately successful, but Musk was ousted. After it merged with PayPal, Musk came back. He insisted on shackling the company to Windows, got ousted a second time, and Peter Thiel came in and actually made the company successful.
