Morning, folk,
This is an intriguing portrait. I'd have guessed he was an apothecary of some kind. ("O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick!") This is nicely detailed, with the texture of the wooden walls visible, along with that of the blue doublet (?) worn by the teen boy in the back and the canvas sack in front of the drug-mixer's desk. He has a pipe atop his book in the foreground, too. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 19, 2025 09:42 AM (J2vNu) 73
"Unproven, usually ineffective, and sometimes dangerous medicines and treatments have been peddled throughout human history. Theatrical performances were sometimes given to enhance the credibility of purported medicines. Grandiose claims were made for what could be humble materials indeed: for example, in the mid-19th century revalenta arabica was advertised as having extraordinary restorative virtues as an empirical diet for invalids; despite its impressive name and many glowing testimonials it was in truth only ordinary lentil flour, sold to the gullible at many times the true cost.
Even where no fraud was intended, quack remedies often contained no effective ingredients whatsoever. Some remedies contained substances such as opium, alcohol and honey, which would have given symptomatic relief but had no curative properties. Some would have addictive qualities to entice the buyer to return. The few effective remedies sold by quacks included emetics, laxatives and diuretics. Some ingredients did have medicinal effects: mercury, silver and arsenic compounds may have helped some infections and infestations; willow bark contained salicylic acid, chemically closely related to aspirin; Posted by: SMOD at February 19, 2025 09:42 AM (RHGPo) 74

I love the way Anker uses natural light to establish a mood and bring out textures in the objects in the painting. Also, his ability to capture facial expressions and skin tones. That also helps him set the mood of the piece. Despite the serious implications of dealing with a quack due to a family illness, the scene is tranquil.
As much as I enjoy Anker's group scenes I prefer the paintings based around one or two figures (CBD has used some of those in the past) and especially his still life works. They are lovely. Posted by: JTB at February 19, 2025 09:47 AM (yTvNw) 95

zelensky is in no position to negotiate, he has no real status other than as an illegal dictator, he has refused to negotiate with the Russians and has broken all agreements he has made in the past, the Euros are as bad having broken all the agreements and slipping in weapons, men and money on the sly, the US is just about as bad.
It is well and good to say "war is not for gentlemen" but negotiating the peace is, since you cannot make an agreement with people who have worked to screw you over and openly claim to be willing to do it again. as things are right now, there is no one that Russia will trust after the last 4 years, without some major work and concessions on what reality is on the ground. Posted by: sal at February 19, 2025 *** Outer Limits was an hour from the beginning. Twilight Zone went to an hour format later, for one season, before going back to the half hour for its last year. That said, TZ's stories were like little short stories with surprise endings and worked better at the 30-minute length. OL had scripts that were often more like novellas or short novels. We wore them because we belonged to the five civilized tribes. We dressed ourselves up like Abraham Lincoln. We only got to see the Secretary of the Interior, and he said: "Boy! You boys sure look civilized.!" he congratulated us and gave us medals for looking so civilized. We told him about how our land had been stolen and our people were dying. When we finished he shook our hands and said, "endeavor to persevere!" They stood us in a line: John Jumper, Chili McIntosh, Buffalo Hump, Jim Buckmark, and me — I am Lone Watie. They took our pictures. And the newspapers said, "Indians vow to endeavor to persevere." We thought about it for a long time, "Endeavor to persevere." Quacksalber is a German word that translates to "quack doctor" or "charlatan" in English. It can also refer to a board game called Die Quacksalber von Quedlinburg.
The painting is very well done, great detail. I would place into rotation to hang on occasion. Centre Albert Anker Albert Anker – the artist and person in the context of the time in which he lived In part, Albert Anker is not only one of the most popular Swiss painters of the nineteenth century—his interest in the “inner being” of the people who sat for him raises him considerably above other realists and portrait painters of his age. The artist’s character unites many facets: sensitivity, a humanistic view of the world, and a responsible father. Firmly entrenched in German and French culture, Albert Anker lived and worked in Paris and in his hometown Ins. Besides his well-known pieces, he also executed very private works of art that were only meant to be viewed by those very close to him. Countless surviving photographs, letters, and drawings provide evidence that he was extremely cosmopolitical in his thought and actions." A very nice, detail site of the man's life and body of work. Has anyone seen yesterday's EO? It basically says "in this administration we follow Loper Bright so you better pass those wild ideas past us first"
https://tinyurl.com/ytpy8n4u --- This is spinning up the 16 inch guns on the USS Trump. It's amusing watching these federal judges blithely march the entire bureaucratic left to oblivion. I mean, look at the key underpinning of the immunity decision: The only Law the President has to follow was the one drafted in the summer of 1787 and any Amendments thereto. All other law passed by Congress restricting or directing the President how to act mean fuck-all. All this "illegally fired" and "illegally delegated" and "illegally froze funding" are all under "da fuck you talkin' 'bout Willis?"
