Can't Dodge The DOGE

Trump signs off on DOGE audit of IRS

President Donald Trump on Thursday threw his support behind the Department of Government Efficiency investigation into alleged fraud and waste at the Internal Revenue Service.
Trump has long railed against the IRS, repeatedly claiming on the 2024 campaign trail that the office improperly targets conservatives for political reasons. After entering office in January, the president proposed closing down the IRS and replacing it with a new External Revenue Office. The president and his allies claim that revenue coming in from new Trump-era tariffs would sufficiently offset the loss of federal income taxes.
Gavin Kliger and other DOGE officials reportedly arrived at IRS headquarters Thursday afternoon, just before Trump’s Oval Office signing ceremony for his new reciprocal tariff agenda.

How does that make you feel? Auditing the IRS. I swear to you...

Making Gas Cans Great Again

Chip Roy introduces bill slashing gas can regulations

Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas introduced a bill Thursday that would repeal gas can regulations implemented under President Barack Obama's administration.
In the early 2000s, the vents in gas cans were removed due to a series of environmental regulations aimed at reducing vapor emissions. The vents by design prevented a vacuum from forming inside the gas can and would allow the gasoline to pour out smoothly.
But after the regulations were implemented and the vents were removed, the stream of gasoline poured unpredictably and often spilled, hindering a once simple and efficient design.
Roy's bill would do away with these unnecessary regulations, restoring the functionality of gas cans.
"Pointless government regulations have ruined many commonsense products, and everyone knows it," Roy told Blaze News. "The federal government does not need to be involved in every aspect of our lives, and we never needed them involved in our gas cans."

All I can say is “It's about time”. Any time I find a pre-Obama gas can at a yard sale, I buy it. It would be nice to be able to just buy cans that work.

Bet You're Hearing Jim McKay In Your Head Right Now

The crashing, ‘agony of defeat’ skier visits St. Louis from Slovenia

As I sat across from Vinko Bogataj at a St. Louis coffeeshop, I just kept thinking — how the hell is he here today?
Not because the 74-year-old man lives in a small village in Slovenia, but, like — how did he survive that crash in the first place?
See, Bogataj is “the agony of defeat” guy. For sports fans of a certain generation, he was a notable part of their world (well, wide world).
From the early 1970s until the late 1990s, Bogataj was featured in the opening to the TV show “Wide World of Sports” on ABC. The program was as much a part of American Saturdays as college football and “SNL.” And before every show, the narrator said: “Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sport — the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.”
The accompanying footage, timed with “the agony of defeat,” showed the then-Yugoslavian skier during a jump. At a dangerously high speed downhill, he lost his footing and violently wiped out, his skis whipping around almost like a propeller. He sailed off the side of the slope, taking down a huge sign with him. He crashed into the snow and his entire body bounced again and again down the mountainside.

The human drama of athletic competition.

Federalism

Fifty Shades of Freedom

As every high-school civics student knows, federalism divides political power between the Beltway and each of the 50 states. Washington, D.C., handles the truly national issues (international treaties, national defense, printing money, etc.) while the states should handle the rest. This allows each state to tailor laws to its needs while the feds ensure basic civil rights and constitutional norms are protected.
California can follow the economic wisdom of Venezuela, while Florida can dump red tape into the wood chipper. Utah can limit easy access to booze and weed, while Vermont can subsidize shot glasses and rolling papers. Best of all, it’s easier for a state’s residents to register their wishes with local leaders—or rent a U-Haul if they disagree.
Back in the 1830s, Alexis de Tocqueville was one of the first Europeans to praise this decentralized system. It let the national government focus on “a small number of objects ... sufficiently prominent to attract its attention” and left “secondary affairs” to governments more accountable to the people. These days, however, Washington focuses much of its attention on not so “prominent objects”—like cowboy poetry, the circumference of dill pickles and light bulbs

I don't know if we can restore balance to the system, for one thing, we'd need to repeal the 17th Amendment. I would also like to go back to the patronage model of civil service. When people vote for a change, they should get it, not have it blocked by unelected bureaucrats.

2 On The Law

Anti-Trump judges sparked a legal crisis

JD Vance caused a firestorm on Sunday when he posted on X, formerly Twitter: “If a judge tried to tell a general how to conduct a military operation, that would be illegal. If a judge tried to command the attorney general in how to use her discretion as a prosecutor, that’s also illegal. Judges aren’t allowed to control the executive’s legitimate power.”
The vice president’s remarks came in response to the growing list of lower-court judges who have attempted to halt the new administration’s agenda with a slew of injunctions. They have directed Team Trump to release federal grants to nonprofits that the administration has frozen for auditing, for example, and blocked the administration from applying its interpretation of the 14th Amendment, according to which children born to illegal immigrants aren’t automatically entitled to US citizenship.
Vance hit back at the judges for trying to restrict the president in his own sphere and overriding his decisions as to how best to carry out the law (the execute in the “executive branch”. As the Harvard law professor Adrian Vermeule put it an X post, reshared by Vance, “judicial interference with legitimate acts of state, especially the internal functioning of a co-equal branch, is a violation of the separation of powers”.

About Those 'Co-Equal' Branches of Government...

Once again, a lawful executive order on “immigration” has been blocked by a couple of federal judges. To the Left, of course, this is a triumph of “representative democracy” but to the rest of us it’s anything but. The idea that a single federal judge, anywhere, can — for any reason, or no reason at all — frustrate the legitimate functioning of the executive branch makes absolutely no sense, except in the political sense.

So this battle over Trump’s “Muslim ban” offers us a handy occasion to school the federal judiciary in the constitution, and to remind it that it’s skating on very thin ice indeed if it continues down its partisan path. Because, far from being a “co-equal” branch of government, almost the entirety of the federal court system is a creature of Congress, and can be restructured or abolished at any time. Don’t believe me? Take a look at Article III,

The relevant text is:

“The judicial power of the United States, shall be vested in one Supreme Court, and in such inferior courts as the Congress may from time to time ordain and establish.”

Only SCOTUS “shall” be established. All the other courts were created by congress, which means they can be dissolved or limited by congress.

Legitimate authority only comes from the consent of the governed.

For far too long, the Executive and Legislative branches of government have consented to be ruled by the Judiciary. That must change. The Judiciary must be humbled and returned to it's place.

Apparently there is law, or precedent, that the IRS must not be used as a weapon against individuals. But it is perfectly OK to order it to do intensive investigations on certain classes of taxpayers, and they do do that. Quite often they will subject people who earn tipps as income to the third degree, for example.

It used to be, before “woke”, getting something renamed was strongly discouraged by USGS.

There was a guy, a black guy, many years ago named Bill Grandstaff who lived all by hisself in a canyon just outside of Moab, UT . It had a decidedly not politically correct name. I don’t believe the N word was necessarily derogatory at one time, any more than “Squaw” was derogatory. It was the American Indian name for “Woman”.

But modern sensibilities what they are, and psychotics, …

211 I've seen that written too, but only as a joke. The drilling ban is the result of a Biden executive order, which, even if the original order is not null and void for its author being non compos mentis, Trump could reverse with the stroke of a pen on a new EO.
Posted by: tankdemon at February 13, 2025 10:44 PM (VSht7)

The courts say “No.” The law was written so that a President could put areas for offshore drilling under protection, but not remove them.

It’s a bit different from the other Trump EOs because it’s a power delegated by Congress; not one the President inherently possesses.

The GOP Congress will have to reverse it. (They probably won’t, but we’ll see. From what I’ve seen, oil companies aren’t really itching to expand drilling. The ANWR leases back in January were a big bust.)

If you listened to the news about NYC or L.A., you'd never go there, either.

I go to Europe at least once every year, and have for the last 0 plus years, and have never had any issues. At all.

Well, it's crowded beyond belief in the summer, and I got groped on Italy ( by a native), but I've never even been pick-pocketed. Left my passport in a cab in London, and the very nice Muslim cabbie brought it back and wouldn't take a tip. Have left my credit card at numerous counters all over the continent, it was always waiting for me when I went back.

Learn how to say hello, thank you and please in the language of each country you go to. In Paris, say Bon Jour or Bon Soire before you speak to anyone, even when walking into a business or restaurant, or asking directions on the street.

Just do it.

How much of that was due to an uncertain regulatory environment? Businesses have to have certainty going forward. Nobody has a crystal ball mind you, but they aren’t going to invest millions of dollars on a venture and get yanked around by asshats who changed their mind. A fundamental reason why Progressives and leftists don’t belong anywhere near government. They don’t understand it, or insofar as they might, they simply don’t like it.

That's the thing. I'm so glad my elderly relatives have lived to see it, especially my 99-year-old grandmother. She shed tears when Obama was re-elected. I lost 2 of older relatives in the past week. Weird how I get that bit of comfort knowing that they hung in long enough to see Trump taking over again, although I don't know what they were preoccupied with. Oh well.

265 >> How much of that was due to an uncertain regulatory environment? Businesses have to have certainty going forward. Nobody has a crystal ball mind you, but they aren’t going to invest millions of dollars on a venture and get yanked around by asshats who changed their mind.

Right, I think that is part of the problem. Unfortunately, that hasn’t changed much. These projects take years to become profitable. It’s hard to invest if you think in four years it might all get yanked away. Democrats have created economic uncertainty that extends outside of their time in charge of the government.

Another problem is oil companies are not looking for a repeat of the 2010s. Capital discipline was poor then and there was a glut of oil, pushing prices down and forcing major consolidation. They’d rather stick with preserving profitability.

My CA19-9 (a tumor marker seen in IHCC patients) results came back - when I was first diagnosed back in October, my number was 180.

Over the course of 4 months - and 2 cycles of conventional chemotherapy - that number climbed to 590 (should be below 37).

By this Monday - after 2 weeks on targeted gene therapy - my number had dropped to 91! 🥳🥳🥳

274 Sometimes the hard medical situations can still have some humor in them. A couple of years before he passed, my father had a lung condition that put him in ICU, and he was heavily medicated. We finally got into a private room with a window; this was in Scottsdale, and he could see a row of palm trees in the parking lot. I noticed that he kept looking out the window in an agitated manner.
So I asked him “Dad, what’s bothering you?” And he said “don’t you see that?” (Pointing at the window)
I said. “What do you see, dad?”
And he said “well it’s those gorillas! They keep running up and down the trees and throwing coconuts, they shouldn’t let them run loose like that! Just look at them!”
“Right dad, yeah someone should stop that.”
This was from a guy who hardly ever drank at all, much less anything else. Figured out after talking to doctor that it was the interaction between two of the drugs they were giving him causing the hallucinations, and were able to stop them.

333 Judge Amir Ali just ordered the Trump administration to lift the funding freeze for foreign aid - AP
Posted by: Don Black

Congress needs to get off their ass, and do a Sense of the Senate, and Sense of the House resolution saying that Trump is within his Constitutional Authority to look at funding... and its not the Court's place to intervene.

Note, Foreign Aid is part of Foreign Policy, which is part of the Executive Branch, not the Legislature.

Electronics-related question for you, Mike. Sold a Studebaker to friend, a six-volt car that has been converted to 12 volt electrics. There are some six volt accessories that would be best kept on six volts: gas gauge, temp gauge, wiper motor, and overdrive relay and solenoid. I was thinking we could install a small six volt AGM battery, and charge it off the 12 volt system via a solid-state VR chip. Maybe include a big fat electrolytic cap to provide the current surge for the pull-in winding on the overdrive solenoid.

Any suggestions?

I looked on Amazon. There is a host of them. Ten amp one is 22 dollars. I doubt either the wiper motor or OD solenoid "hold" coil draws more than ten amps on their own. But the solenoid "pull-in" coil might draw 30 amps for about 0.25 second. That's where a large electrolytic cap could come in handy.

I am preaching "setting up manufacturing companies based in the US to ensure you are on the other side of the tariff wall>" as the solution (i.e. move your manufacturing base to the US) because this system of enforced fairness/tariffs will be the norm for the next 12 years (Trump then, likely Vance or De Santis), as the Democrats have no one bench in 2028. 414 6V systems have trouble, but most of them are user initiated. The main thing, they require much thicker heavier cables. 12 volt stuff is thinner. And nothing in the auto parts stores is worth a damn, it’s all junk now.

6V starters work just fine on 12 volts, btw. A little rough on the bendix drive, but. Most automakers never never changed their gauges from 6V they just added shunt resistors to make them work.

I always recommend installing a solid state ignition Pertronix to replace points and condenser. Nobody makes a decent condenser any longer, and NOS go bad sitting on the shelf. A 600V polypropylene “orange drop” capacitor will work OK. Have to use NOS points, nobody can make those worth a damn.

The Pertronix is real nice, because it is not so much affected by distributor wobble. Once a distributor gets some miles on it, you’ll never get the same point gap twice in a row, and the ignition timing will wander all over the place. A bearing will wear in an egg shape, you can see this on an ignition scope. Points & condenser are too much of a pain in the ass at this late date.

419 Very sorry about your sister, Weird Dave. What a shock for you and all others who loved and appreciated her.

God of us all

A life they live had been torn from them. Expectations the years once held have vanished. The mystery of heath had stricken them. O God, you know the lives we lead and the deaths we die- woven so strangely of purpose and of chance, of reason and the irrational, of strength and of frailty, of happiness and of pain. They have commended their loved one to you . Through your grace
That can do far more than we can think or imagine fulfill in Dave's sister your purpose that reaches beyond time and death. Lead her from strength and fit het for love and service in your heavenly kingdom. Help those left to know your care that enfolds all people and that you are their refuge and strength and underneath are your everlasting arms. Amen.

Hold all of her family and friends in your keeping . Save their minds from despair and their hearts from fear. And guide and guard them with your peace. Amen

429 It seems, Trump's bigger purpose for quickly getting a Russia and Ukraine peace deal in place is to clear the ground for his actual goal of de-nuking the planet.

He has repeatedly, in passing, discussed the threat nuclear weapons pose to civilization. In his comments about this pending peace deal over the last few days this subject came up again but this time he framed the discussion in terms that the US, Russia, and the Chi-coms would be so much better off - wealthier was the implication, a topic always close to the forefront for him - without them.

He hasn't played his hand fully here but because it has consistently been in his comments over the last years I think it is worth some attention. My sense is the audacious scale and scope of his entire agenda is far bigger than is readily grasped: Felonious D isn't just out to fix what is broke but trigger a revolution that will affect the entire world order.

With this perspective in mind, when he says Iran will never have nukes, the Mullahs would be wise to heed him otherwise they should plan on being obliterated. I am convinced he means this and will do exactly that - can't have a wild card screwing up his wealth creation plans.

You could start with the smallest bottle. If nothing else, it's very soothing. The lip balm is also amazing.

AOC hosted a live webinar on Wednesday advising illegals how to avoid being deported by ICE agents. Border Czar Tom Homan has referred her to the Deputy Attorney General. Having AOC criminally indicted for breaking her Constitutional oath and a bunch of laws would be so special.

Next do Ilhan Omar but in her case she should be deported. There is a strong case she used fake documents to get into the country and then there is that matter of a fake marriage between her and brother so he could get into the USA. And that is all before we get to her seditious activities.

446 WeirdDave, so sorry to hear of your sister's passing; I am so glad that she was able to be an organ donor. Now a part of her will live on, and all of those recipients' families will not have to endure the loss of their loved ones.

Although our daughter was ultimately unable to make a "live" donation, the thought that she might be able to gave us great comfort in those awful few days between life and death.

I hope that your family is able to find comfort in the amazing gift that your sister was able to provide to those families.

But my parents lost a child, my BIL lost his WIFE and my nephews lost their mother. My role in this shitshow is to be strong for them. Susan being torn out of my life is way more impactful for everyone else. Not diminishing our (Sister/brother) relationship, but my job is to support everyone else. My loss is the least of the problems. I love her. But I can best honor her by being there for the people she loved

And BTW, it sucks. Damnit.

458 Weirddave, many years ago when my little sister passed away unexpectedly, I had to do the same things for the rest of my family as you are having to do now. Someone had to be the rock for both of my parents and for my nephew, and even for my sister's ex-husband, who found himself strangely affected by her loss, even though they had been divorced for many years.

Yes, you are grieving, but yes, you have to be the port in the storm for everyone else in your family. Thankfully, you have your own "rock" in Gingy - she is why you can be there for your family right now, and she will be there for you a few months from now when you have seen the rest of your family through to the point where they are able to "stand" again. That is when you will feel like you can fully grieve - not that you aren't grieving now, but you have to be strong right now - and you will.

For me, that was about 6-8 months later. Everyone's timeline is different - there is no set amount of time for something like this.

But I do know that when we see each other at this year's MoMe, I am going to give you a big ol' Texas hug, because I have BTDT, and I know just how you feel. Love ya, darlin' 💔🙏

Posted by: Teresa in Fort Worth, Plucky Comic Relief, AoS Ladies Brigade - Eat the Cheesecake, Buy the Yarn. at February 14, 2025 04:03 AM (SRRAx)

459 That being the rock thing is so tough. You have to attend to everyone else's grief and behavior. You don't have the time to deal with your own.

When my Mom passes the whole extended family came apart at the seems. It was a horror show.

It took me months to process what went on before I was actually able to grieve myself.

Then the lawsuits started.
