Obviously I'm not losing sleep over this. But, as many of you know, The ONT Is Always Looking Out For YouTM

We all know how an asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs. So whenever one of these lumps of space rocks gets anywhere near us, it’s easy to panic.

And there’s a 1.3% chance of exactly this happening.

A newly discovered asteroid, 2024 YR4, may strike Earth in December 22, 2032, according to Nasa. Just in time for Christmas.

The space rock is between 130 feet and 330 feet long, so about the size of Big Ben. It’s the only large asteroid with an impact probability above 1%.

'Shrimp fraud' rampant at many Gulf Coast restaurants, new studies find

Restaurants throughout the Gulf Coast are serving imported shrimp but telling their customers they're feasting on fresh crustaceans fished in the Gulf of Mexico, a series of new studies found.

SeaD Consulting, a food safety technology company, tested shrimp from randomly chosen restaurants in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Biloxi, Mississippi; Galveston, Texas; and Tampa Bay, Florida. Researchers found a significant number of the restaurants were passing off their shrimp as locally sourced, even though they were grown on foreign farms and imported to the U.S.

The cities with the highest "shrimp fraud rate" were Tampa Bay and St. Petersburg, Florida, at 96%, according to SeaD Consulting. Only two of the 44 restaurants sampled were serving authentic shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico, a study found.

There's a 4-alarm fire in my little town right now. Four or five houses are already involved. One fireman injured. Our firemen are all volunteers. Prayers needed.

The section involved has lots of small summer cottages that have been converted to year-round. They are on small lots, that's why the quick spread. Plus, it's windy and 25 degrees. Two explosions now, believed to be propane tanks.

35 AirStrikes on Somalia/ISIS.

TRUTH: Had Bill Clinton done 25 years ago, what Trump did today, and Somalia accomplished in a week nearly 15 years ago, there factually would been no OBL, no 911, no Endless Wars.

Les Aspen KNEW that the warlords were speaking Arabic, vs Somali, and that he was not fighting Adid, but a new player, yet he still denied the Blackhawk Down crew the armor support they requested.

And THEN, he berated the parents of the fallen soldiers, in the oval office, after they confronted him with this historical fact
-- to which he replied: "It's their OWN FAULT that they are dead"

77 For those wishing to get updates on the DC air crash, on YouTube is a channel called NTSBgov that has the briefings.

The Bombardier's CVR and FDR have been downloaded. Today's briefing gave a synopsis of the CVR and FDR information. Some of it is quite chilling.

Plane had descended below 500ft, TCAS starts giving audio alerts of "Traffic. Traffic. Traffic." FDR shows plane starting to pitch. On the CVR you then hear the sounds of impact. Then nothing.

ATC cab was manned by five people that night. Only one was responsible for both fixed wing and rotary traffic. ATC broadcasts on both VHF and UHF so the Bombardier heard the messages addressed to PAT25, which means PAT25 should have heard the messages to the Bombardier.

When the jet was at an altitude of 1,200ft ATC warned PAT25 that the flight was south of the Woodrow Wilson bridge and was going to land on Runway 33.

PAT25 information. Its black boxes have been recovered. The CVR had water incursion, so they are fixing that. So, at present they have no concrete information on what PAT25 was doing or altitude.

Jet's altitude at impact has been confirmed at 325ft +/- 25ft.

I'll guess "none." Based on an estimate using "the average density for a rocky asteroid," since nobody's core-sampled this one:

Mass of the International Space Station:
1,000,000 lbs

Mass of this asteroid:
480,000,000 lbs

Mass of the moon:
160,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 lbs

But, it is still early. Let's see what additional info emerges.

277 Upon graduation from college it's off to the Officer Basic Course. That is usually about 3months. Flight school is probably 6 months. Throw in some leave and travel, say 10 months to her first assignment. Typically about 3 years there and then back to school formonths at the Officers Advance Course. There may be a second assignment before the OAC and that may be the White House time. What we don't know is how long she has been in her current job. Her awards seem commiserate with her time in the Army.
With 500 hours she would be a competent pilot.
I will not judge her here. That is up to the DOD and the NTSB. Nor will I speculate on her personal life.

292 Under Biden, Barky's visceral hatred for the commoners manifested itself in the selection of personnel who were spectacularly unqualified for the positions they were given. E.g.,

Kamala
Mayor Chestfeeder
"Admiral" Richard Levine
John Brennan
James Clapper
Sam Brinton
Kitanji Jackson
Gina Raimondo
Mayorkas
Blinken

So, one cannot help but wonder about an Army officer who stood out enough to score a "social" position in the White House itself. How many incompetence boxes did she check?

293 We can't directly blame the female co-pilot, but we can recognize the issues of 3000 qualified ATCs being rejected for being white, which directly resulted in being understaffed.

AND we can recognize the female pilots have been advanced for being female, while more qualified males are not accepted. And we can recognize that while a male may have been in charge, he only had 1000 hours, and they female co-pilot only had ~450 hours. And they made a huge mistake rising above their 200' limit to over 300' at a critical moment, after being warned.

Ignoring the obvious due to WOKE ideology is what the DEI "terrorists" always count on.

294 >> Pounds-force or pounds-mass?

Pound-mass. The weight of a lb-mass on the Moon would be ~ 1/6th lb-force.

Now, a balance scale on the Moon, calibrated in lbs would read the same. A balance scale determines the ratio of masses. While gravitational force is required for it to work, it doesn't measure forces, only masses.

A spring scale on the Moon would read 1/6th of the reading on earth.

However, until I receive a coherent rational explanation for why any aircraft that is not landing or taking off is ever permitted in the vicinity of those that are at a major airport, I am going to blame policymakers, regulators, or lawmakers - whoever is to blame for what to my ignorant, untrained eyes appears wholly indefensible. That airspace ought to be off limits. And if some other rule is necessary (that makes all this risk unavoidable), then I want to hear it in plain English.

Well, bright lights at night can play tricks on the eyes, as we all know. But that's a factor that must be accounted for in aviation. Lots of lights in that area: Runway lights, taxi lights, lamp post lights, antenna beacons, strobes, car headlights on the roads, etc.

392 I will, of course, give the same disclaimers that I’m not a pilot nor a naval aviator. I have had some military experience and direct experience with aviators, but that doesn’t really mean anything. I also grew up where this crash landed so I know all about Blackhawks and other helicopters flying down the Potomac constantly.. one of my first memories of living in the DC area was Air Florida flight 90. It was our 911 and Challenger disaster before those horrible events happened.

They mentioned Fort Belvoir to me that is like mentioning my home. Having said all that they need to drop training flights in that flight space. Send them to the formerly known basis for Pickett or the formally known base as for AP Hill. Why do with very low levels of flight experience have to do training flights in and out of DCA airspace? I still don’t know who is to blame, and with my limited knowledge the fact that two planes were flying at the same altitude that makes me think it was the air traffic controller. Isn’t that the first rule?

If you have a laptop can you not tether it to the phone via Bluetooth? Then run Brave Browser on the laptop, and enjoy the site with a full screen and a real keyboard. I am currently using an old desktop, running Brave Browser under Linux Mint 20. The only ad I see is that for King Harv's coffee. Incidentally, the ADSB flight tracking of that supposed "medi-vac" Learjet is quite interesting.

Total flight time after takeoff is less than 60 seconds. The pilot reached over 3000/ft-min climb right away, which, to me, is kinda steep. Re altimeters. When I was setting up the weather station here, I had to calibrate the barometer, and I got interested in how this is done. You set your barometer to report "altimeter setting". That is the absolute pressure under you at sea level. An approximation which is close enough for all practical purposes is just to add a constant offset. That was 0.88" Hg for me here.

Airports constantly report via some broadcast method, all this and a slew of other variables. When you set your altimeter to "altimeter setting" reported by the airport, you get altitude above sea level. But, when you're coming in for a landing, at some point you adjust to "station pressure", which is the unadjusted absolute pressure.

When you use station pressure, your altimeter will now read altitude above ground level at the station.

All this weather information is two-way as well. A while back, related to some topic my late cousin and I were yakking out, there is some network of many if not most commercial planes in the air that is constantly feeding all the relevant meteorological data being measured by the airplane's instruments back to the ground.

This can be very useful, more info back to the weather boys.

Or did this aircraft have a control-surface malfunction, such as the Elevators becoming uncontrollable?
Posted by: Soothsayer likes gladiators at February 01, 2025 11:59 PM (lxWss)

The "sick" patient was being returned to Mexico after having been successfully treated at the Shriner's Hospital in Philly. So the kid was probably not in any kind of fragile state. 3000 feet per minute is not that great a rate of climb. That's only a little over 30 mph vertical speed.

This company has been in business for quite a few years, and flies only Lear 55's. I assume they are experienced and competent.

Best guesses?
1. mechanical failure
2. bird strike to engines
3. (long shot) missile or sabotage; cartel-related

430 It is a civilian aviation area. Commercial airlines are not supposed to do evasive maneuvers to avoid Blackhawks. to me, this is on the Blackhawk or the air traffic controller.

In the end, there was human error and by human nature, everyone is going to try to push the blame onto the other guy. This is an extremely rare occurrence, though it is weird. That three planes have gone down in three or four days. The Republicans asked for clarity and openness about the history of the last 10 years. Well we need the exact same thing about the last week.

438 420 Despite explanations, it is still incomprehensible to me that US army was conducting training flights (no matter the rationale) in that airspace at night, nor why the FAA would allow it. Do not understand why a few hundred feet of vertical separation would be OK under any circumstances for any type airframe in a landing pattern. Some have mentioned they practice in this area frequently and for evacuation reasons, but still sounds like lunacy to me.
Posted by: EdmundBurkesShade

I understand, but it's common practice. It will change because of this. Most training is after midnight as there are (I think) no flights (or reduced) out of Reagan National then. I take strolls in the court yard in the fived sided nuthouse along the Potomac. After midnight, I don't hear too much jet traffic out of National. I do see and hear choppers though. Training.

It's a steep pitch. Again, this was, like within 20 seconds of takeoff. You takeoff, climb safely, gear up, flaps up, a lot going on in that 1st minute before you go balls-to-wall Climb Rate.

And, as I said, the speed doesn't seem to match the pitch -- it doesn't seem prudent, is my point.

The pilot was ID'ed as soon as his family was notified.

Somehow, a military helicopter that was on a routine training exercise got badly off course.

It might have been the pilot or co-pilot both of whom had hundreds of hours of flight time. Might have been the understaffed DEI ATC who have admitted they were supposed to have 2 operators on duty watching traffic but they only had 1.

There is no indication as of now the co-pilot was responsible for the crash.

She once said, "My experiences with SHARP have reinforced my resolve to serve others with compassion, understanding, and the resources necessary for healing."

"Rebecca was many things. She was a daughter, sister, partner, and friend. She was a servant, a caregiver, an advocate. Most of all, she loved and was loved. I would say yes. Rights come from God, not the government, so should be acknowledged for all people regardless status, though citizenship and immigration status could be considered part of the identification process this not subject to self-incrimination rules.

Note that immigrants (to include green card holders) do not have the right to be in this country at all and may be expelled at any time without violating their rights. This would include keeping them detained until deportation can be achieved. Indefinite detention without actively working toward deportation is probably a no-go.

The courts aren't exactly loyal to the country or its people.

They, like the rest of the government, only exist because we give them permission to, so we are under no obligation to bow our heads to the notion of "Because the courts said so".

Li'l Shitler is but one of several DNC "Vice Chairs".

You would not expect a party which wholeheartedly supports participation prizes to fail to provide a full slate of participation prizes in its leadership ranks, would you?

After all, their House caucus went out of its way to invent a sinecure for James Clyburn when they lost their majority some years recently back and old Jimbo would have gotten bumped out of the Whip's sinecure as Nanzi and Steny had to be ratcheted downward when she no longer was Speaker.

Entirely normal for the traditional Lear airframe. Remember, the original Lear 25 was quicker to 20,000 ft. than an F-86 Sabre.

Most TCA airspace below 10,000 ft. has a 250 kt. limit. Takeoff thrust on a Lear 55, the only way to stay below that limit, is to convert airspeed to altitude, e.g; 3,000 fpm climbout.

Lear Jets have lots of sensor/limiter and aerodynamic tricks to keep the jets subsonic and slower. Elsewise, they'd bust the sound barrier and start shedding skins off of wings and stabilizers, speeding themselves to death.

Cessna's Citation X is actually a faster airplane (0.92 Mach). But the Lear is quicker to altitude. By far.

I got to reading on this question of alien rights. It's very interesting and convoluted. First, consider an alien here legally. If that person commits a crime, they can be tried and imprisoned. But they have the rights of any other defendant. An illegal alien would have the same rights as well.

But, can they be deported. That's much easier. Even the First Amendment doesn't apply so much. It's not really a defense against being deported, so long as it's not really blatant (that's ambiguous, and there's a lot of grey area).

I will be delighted to see the end of this chore. Walls still need (some) taping and mudding, and sanding, then paint, but very little ladder work there. Sec. Hegseth just put out "guidance", reading thusly:

Going forward, DoD Components and Military Departments will not use official resources, to include man-hours, to host celebrations or events related to cultural awareness months, including National African American/Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Pride Month, National Hispanic Heritage Month, National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and National American Indian Heritage Month. Service members and civilians remain permitted to attend these events in an unofficial capacity outside of duty hours.

Installations, units, and offices are encouraged to celebrate the valor and success of military heroes of all races, genders, and backgrounds as we restore our warrior culture and ethos. We are proud of our warriors and their history, but we will focus on the character of their service instead of their immutable characteristics.

This guidance is effectively immediately.
