First-World Problems...

That drain thingy was originally round, but it didn't fit through the slightly smaller opening in the sink grid. So I had to bend the edges and hammer them flat so it would fit and not cut me up.

Who designs this stuff?

Do I have to replace the sink so that the drain thingy fits? Yeah... it came in a two-pack, so I have one in reserve!

My wife told me that when she was a little girl they washed their hair with the water they rinsed the rice in before cooking it. My FWP was cookware too big for the cupboards. Leaving them on the stove looked sloppy.

I bought secondhand Revere Ware. They fit perfectly in the cupboards, they're lightweight, and they're made in the US.

My wife has a trimmed bath mat, with a hole for the drain cut out over them. Decorative. Looks like small stones, but is rubber. Easy to toss when nasty.

Could be Chinesium metal. But I have learned that stainless can have iron particles embedded into it during the manufacturing process. If the tooling that is used to form the sink is made out of 'regular' steel, it can transfer some iron to the stainless steel.

There are chemical processes (called passivation) to remove that iron, but doubtful they would spend the money on something like a sink (and it sounds like they definitely don't)!

Agreed. In my Scuba diving days one of our home dives was an instructors boat that he scuttled to 120 ft in a quarry (the joke was that the boat was named after his ex wife). Fresh water and any stainless fitments on the boat looked new.

I've seen some what I assume was stainless sitting in salt water though and it looks a bit more rough. Not sure if it was the salt water or the grade of stainless used.

Microprocessor boards on stoves are pretty easy to replace, if you can get the right one. If you're stove, for instance, is more than about 5 or 10 years old, good luck finding one.

Finally the garbage disposal gave up the ghost, and when I replaced I found the source of the leak: the disposal wasn't clamped to the bottom of the sink. It was just urged into place by an ABS pipe, so when the dishwasher drained into the garbage disposal (usually ~ 2 am or so), filling it with water, the extra weight pushed the disposal down so that water drained around the disposal. When the water finally drained out as it was supposed to, the disposal moved back up, and overnight all the plumbing dried out.

Mystery solved.

My experience with in-door ice dispensers (not ice makers which are purely mechanical except for a small motor) is that they are a source of corrosion because of condensation due to air gaps in the insulation around the opening.

The firmware on three of those bulbs will not update.

I’ve worked on garbage disposals many times. Whenever I had to put my hand down the sink drain, which was always, I got extremely uneasy about that. Along with some dark thoughts of “well, it was a freak accident “. Don’t have a disposal now and don’t miss it.

I pull the rubber seal off of mine and get a flashlight before I look for anything in the garbage disposal. I bought a special set of very long needle nose pliers to remove objects from the disposal if it becomes necessary. Saves me much anxiety and hand digits.

Here's why, as explained to me by a nun who was employed by the Detroit Public Schools as a reading specialist:

The elected government promised services but using government employees blows the budget because of their wages. Also, government bean-counters won't build service centers in high poverty (aka low tax base) areas.

Therefore, government began outsourcing work to NGOs with volunteers and/or low-paid employees (nuns take a vow of poverty). Christian churches already had services in impoverished areas, seeing as they're on a mission from God. A little government money for more services was a win/win.

The problems started when NGOs started chasing the government cash. Heck, about 20 years ago, I was at a church conference and a friend's teenaged daughter said she wanted to start an NGO. I asked what problem it would tackle. She wasn't sure, but proceeded to tell us that the heads of NGOs could make more than $400K in salary/bennies.

Every time I work on a car I cuss my fellow engineers - mechanical and electrical. GET OUT AND WORK ON THE SHIT YOU ARE DESIGNING!
