Senator Mullin: How Many Senators Have Cast Votes at Night Drunk? How Many Have Been Divorced Due to Cheating?

I mean, you could also point out that Mazie Horono sounds drunk right now as she grills Hegseth about "drinking on the job" ...

Live video of the hearings here.

Here's Senatrix Skeletor showing how devoted she is to abstinence from drinking on the job.

Some of Hegseth's answers:

All servicemen kicked out of the military due to refusal to take the experimental non-vaccine will be reinstated with back pay.

When asked by the credibly-accused adulteress and liberal feminist Joni Ernst about women in combat roles: Standards will be increased to ensure that anyone in a combat role is the best of the best (and not, then, a DEI hire). Not sure Ernst is happy about that answer!

Hegseth supports Israel "destroying and killing every last member of Hamas." Buh Muh Terrorist Resistance Fighters!

"Politics has nothing to do with the battlefield."

Hegseth didn't just encounter "protesters." He was greeted by supporters, though they, of course, remained silent during the actual hearings.

Will we be prosecuting the Insurrectionists who tried to derail a constitutional hearing or nah...?

In Casino Royale and Skyfall at least, Craig was an excellent Bond, the tough "instrument of government policy" that Fleming envisioned. Craig's opening B & W scene in CR detailing how he earned his 00 status is iconic, and Skyfall would be a fine spy adventure even if it were not about someone called "James Bond."

Same. He has no chemistry with the female leads, seems plodding and crude, not suave and sophisticated, and the entire approach of his run was summed up by the girl M "blunt instrument." A nominee for a cabinet post and even later as a Secretary is a punching bag and you have to sit there and take it as hazing because even if you win, you have to go back and face those same assholes again and again (unless you use the Biden precedent where you simply refuse to show up and dare the committee to subpoena you to appear).

I thought Dark Shadows was okay, but I haven't seen it in forever, and then only once.

He only directed the first Alice, and it was purely for the money. He apparently hated the experience and took his anger out on Disney on his remake of Dumbo, the second half of which is all about how Disney sucks.

It's honestly the best of the live action remakes Disney has made of animated classics, and its one of the only with negative reviews. It's a cornerstone of the idea in my mind that Disney buys positive reviews. They wanted the movie to die once they figured out what it was.

Pretty much, yeah. I don't like it when the nominees go off on a tangent. Just answer what you were asked and let your home team (the defense) clear things up and give you room to say what you need. Its all a sham anyway, nobody is going to ever be disqualified through questioning and nobody is ever going to change their mind.

218 I think the 1965 Casino Royale had 3 directors, each of which did a third of the movie and none of their parts made sense with any of the other parts. The music was great, for sure. Peter Sellers was supposed to be the star of the movie, and is for the first half. Then he had a violent mental breakdown on set and walked off halfway through, and rather than reshooting they just killed his character off stupidly in the middle of the movie and went on filming without him.

At least Woody Allen's part (the end, mostly) is funny, with a lot of slapstick.
Jimmy Bond, dancing around: "They called Einstein Crazy!"
Girl: "That's not true, no one called Einstein crazy!"
Jimmy Bond, still dancing: "Well they would have if he carried on like this!!!"

But they *did* kind of tweak it at the end toward the type of "Bond Villain".

And that's one thing I kind of liked, was that the script writers were deft enough to put in all the notes that made it "Bond", but to stick with a realish spy story.

The reason it stood out to me is that when I first saw Living Daylights, I had just read a series of articles debunking spy work.

And so the opening of LD, where Bond is just going to shoot somebody, was chef's kiss for me.

It starts out simple, and builds from there, and every so often they give you a touch of the over-the-top Bond stuff.

But, I can see how that would not be enough for people who wanted to see certain things from "Bond".

Depends on what you want in a movie. Connery is actually the type of guy that would become a spykiller IRL. Roger Moore was not. And so it goes. Want spectacle and mindless entertainment? That means you depart from Fleming's already exaggerated spy duties.

Something like some of LeCarre's books (not all), Somerset Maugham, or TV shows like Palfrey of Westminster (counter espionage) or Sandbaggers portrayal of raison d'etat spy agency as a bureaucracy is more to the point.

Someone like Col. Abel who ran a small shop for about a decade in NY as spymaster for a large network is the reality of spying. Bombs, guns, and bimbos, rarely come into it other than bimbo agents as honey traps.

Closest to Bond would be someone like Lawrence of Arabia, O'Reilly, or Richard Sorge.

Saw an interview with Blake Edwards, director of the Pink Panther series among other things, he said that during shooting of one movie, Sellers called Edwards up in the middle of the night. He told Edwards that 'God' told him that a particular scene with Sellers had to be shot precisely this way. Next day, they shot the scene and Sellers carried it off. Edwards told Sellers after the scene that the next time Sellers talked to "God", that Sellers should tell him to leave showbusiness to the director. Sellers was pissed and sulked the rest of the day of shooting.

301 I think the 1965 Casino Royale had 3 directors, each of which did a third of the movie and none of their parts made sense with any of the other parts. The music was great, for sure. Peter Sellers was supposed to be the star of the movie, and is for the first half. Then he had a violent mental breakdown on set and walked off halfway through, and rather than reshooting they just killed his character off stupidly in the middle of the movie and went on filming without him.

He had that scene with Ursula Andress. The one that makes go "WTF? Ursula Andress would go for Peter Sellers? No effin' way!"

I'd have to know more about what he was shooting. There are a lot of guns that frankly suck to shoot, even if you like shooting. I personally find it bizarre and irresponsible when someone takes a new shooter out and hands them one of those guns.

Maybe that wasn't the case with Sisson. Maybe they handed him a soft shooting mid-sized 9mm and he's just being his twinky self. But I've seen far too many assholes take out a new shooter, hand them a .44 magnum, and laugh when they get hurt.

359 345 Then he went all hippie when it came to promote the film

Lazenby was enjoying the Bond money and fame, then realized that the Bond world was considered square and boring, and wanted into the swinging London scene, so he bailed on it all. Basically he gave up long term fame, money and a career for short term kicks with hippie girls with bad teeth and weed.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at January 14, 2025 01:54 PM (2VST1)

======

If I remember correctly, it's actually all his agent's fault.

The agent refused to let Lazenby sign a mult-picture deal, figuring he could get more money on a second deal after the first movie was released.

And then On Her Majesty's Secret Service wasn't that well received and the Broccolis took the opportunity to bring Connery back one last (official) time for Diamonds are Forever to try and resuscitate the franchise.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison
======
I could see why Connery wanted out of the Bond role as the whole franchise was becoming a spectacle fantasy vehicle rather than grounded to any sort of reality.

Moore treated the whole franchise as a giant inside joke and quipmaster which he was well equipped to do.

I disliked most, if not all Bond movies, but especially as they departed more and more from Fleming's books as Fleming himself departed more and more from spycraft depiction. I do think he ghostwrote or contributed to the Man Who Never Was book and later movie. He was apparently the one in Naval Intelligence that revived the old British trick from a WWI intel escapade in Palestine.

LeCarre and lately Mick Herron's Slough House series are better spy novels as being somewhat grounded in reality.

439 I watched Love Actually this holiday season, after well over a decade of not seeing it, because it was free on streaming, and I wanted to see if the libs desperately trying to cancel it actually meant it was secretly good.

It's still silly claptrap. But has a few gems of performances that elevate it. Rowan Atkinson was delightful in his very small role!

Posted by: Bulg at January 14, 2025 02:00 PM (77rzZ)

Not really part of the series. It's a remake of Thunderball. The person who owned the movie rights to that single book was disappointed with the outcome of his collaboration with Cubby the first time and wanted to go for it again.

The title comes from actually snagging Connery to star, who, after Diamonds Are Forever, stated that he would "never again" portray James Bond.

And yes, Kim was a total smokehouse.

I have the complete set of News Radio. I found the commentary amusing.

There was a bit of improv on that show. A lot of by Dave Foley, and some of his best lines are his. They said that they stopped writing reaction lines and his script could say something like "Dave's line here."

The storyline of Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman got to me; superb actors who always play so well off each other and who really bumped up the emotion of their storyline. And it's neat to see some actors who were unknowns at time -- Chiwetel Ejiofor, Martin freeman, Andrew Lincoln -- who hit it big later.

Watched some old David Niven interviews with people like Dick Cavett. He is hilariously understated. His Moon is a Balloon autobiography is well worth seeking out. Christopher Lee is another former commando that corrected a director one time on the proper way to shiv someone with a dagger.

Yeah, you can make that two. Dalton had the best essence of Bond; didn't let much charm through like Connery did. They didn't go full gadget wank fest in his movies either.

Loved Roger Moore but I was a little kid in the 70's and his movies with the exception of For Your Eyes Only were fairly goofy. I haven't watched Moonraker since my father took me to see it in the theater.
And Remington Bond is Remington Bond. Goldeneye was his only good Bond movie; the rest were fairly forgettable.
