Los Angeles is currently battling the most destructive wildfire in Los Angeles County history. The Palisades are gone--all those beautiful homes with those beautiful views just up in smoke. Evacuation orders have impacted nearly 180,000 people. Toxic air is engulfing millions more. With first responders tied up, looters are out in force. The fire hydrants have run out of water. Truly, the collapse we're seeing in Los Angeles is every California chicken coming home to every California roost.
Let's start from the top. The Los Angeles County Fire Department sent a load of their "surplus" gear to Ukraine in 2022, because it felt right to do that. From KTLA in 2022: "Boots, hoses, nozzles, body armor and medication were among the items packed and shipped out." Don't need extra of those. You're welcome, Slava Ukraini!
And don't forget: Growing firefighter diversity has been the main priority for the LA department of late, with a whole special equity bureau. And much has been made of the beautiful rainbow leading the department, run by a lesbian. Should I care that a lesbian saves me lesbianly? You might say, you're already a woman married to a woman, you're doing enough. But it's true: Unless the firefighter is singing "Come to My Window," I won't get on the ladder.
And what's an LA story without unchecked crime? With all first responders tied up, into the breach ran those who love chaos and want more homes to loot. Friend of The Free Press Andrew Huberman took this video of a group of men starting a new fire. And of course, there are missing hydrants all over the city because people have been stealing them for years. "Between January 2023 and May 2024, more than 300 fire hydrants were stolen from LA County streets, according to data from the Golden State Water Company, which manages the fire hydrants." Some of the hydrants are sold as scrap metal. Residents are asked to call if they notice a missing hydrant.

When you create a lawless environment and turn the criminals and lunatics out of prisons and asylums en masse, you're going to have vicious and/or insane people setting fires during an arson, as vengeance on the world.

And that's what's happening. I don't know how many of these fires were deliberately set by arsonists, but we know at least some were. More on that later.

Infrastructure that could have provided more water for those fires has been on hold, tied up in red tape. Ten years ago, California voters approved spending $7.5 billion to build water storage and improve state water facilities--but by 2023 not one dam had been finished, per the Los Angeles Times. Not a single one. But a decade into various environmental regulations and reviews, they are moving. ...
And what about controlled burns? Didn't they at least do that? No. "Forest Service Halts Prescribed Burns in California. Is It Worth the Risk?" reported KQED in October. See: If a controlled burn got messy, it would look bad, like, politically, and also, fire can be scary! So the U.S. Forest Service didn't do them.
Here's Michael Wara, energy and climate expert at Stanford University, explaining: "I think the Forest Service is worried about the risk of something bad happening [with a prescribed burn]. And they're willing to trade that risk--which they will be blamed for--for increased risks on wildfires." Which, he says, can then just be blamed on "Mother Nature."

Or "global warming."

The left can't excuse its failures by reciting its catechisms of "global warming, global warming, global warming." They're the ones who have been warning us for fifty years that global warming will cause more environmental disasters. So obviously they believe in an elevated risk of wildfires due to "global warming."

So riddle me this: Why do they take absolutely zero steps to mitigate the risks of the global warming they shriek about?

Do they just want the fires to burn down whole cities so they can say "I told you so" and have fresh fuel for demands we outlaw, well, fuel?

"Global warming" does not excuse their failure to take steps to clear the forest of deadfall. It indicts them further, because, by their own theory, global warming makes the need to practice prudent forest management even more urgent.

Back to the arsonists that the left has cultivated in large numbers.

One thing that has really stuck with me about this Los Angeles fire is how relatively easily this could have been pulled off by a foreign terror operation. We have a porous border with hostile foreign nationals routinely spilling across. It appears this obvious natural and predicable environmental threat was treated somewhere between cavalierly and complete indifference by local and state officials. I'm not suggesting that's what this was here (there's no evidence of that), but it would be incredibly short-sighted to not treat this event as a potential intentional terrorist target going forward, especially since it would be such a low buy-in from a manpower and materials perspective.

13 Wildfires are not about ignition, they are about conditions. If the conditions are right, ignition pretty much is going to happen.

That's why there should have been policies in place that designated National Guard units would be put on alert when wind conditions and dryness reached certain levels. Units could rotate this duty, but the assumption was that they would be ready to roll and assume pre-planned missions with local officials.

The Guard has firefighting units, engineering units, and military police. It isn't complex or new.

It is axiomatic that a disaster can bring a breakdown of civil society, especially in a place known for shoplifting gangs. This is either deliberate or criminally incompetent.

My understanding is the Guard is finally being called in to suppress looting... but they should have been called in to help the evacuation.

Even a few Guys directing traffic, or moving cars from blocking roads, would have helped.

There are all sorts of mission sets. Engineers to clear roads, MPs for security, and yeah, they've got firefighters as well, who may not bring their own gear, but could relieve exhausted LAFD personnel.

Look at hurricane season. All the states pre-position this stuff.

45 It isn't good for terror because we are used to it. A good chunk of these fires are arson, or accidental arson. There are cases of firemen and chiefs setting fires here. Saw some on those real crime channels.

There really isn't a lot of lightning in LA when it rains. And of course it wasn't raining on the days these fires start. So for true accident there's a car on a road catching fire. If it isn't that its arson.

I suspect the only way they can get this under control now is-

use good old-fashioned shoot to kill orders for looters and, most importantly, arsonists. Allow home-owners to protect their homes with lethal force as well.

That would stop most of the problems instantly and they could concentrate on putting out the fires.

Results increase as you increase the pay, but the curve starts flattening at some point, and then at a certain point results plummet if you go even further up the pay axis. Not sure why this would happen, maybe the focus shifts from the job to enjoying the fruits of being fabulously rich.

no lie aside from the flame ahead there are vistas like that all over in LA. I know of one with cobbles like that sealed together that you need real hiking soles to walk over that don't flex your feet in odd places and strain the ligaments and muscles. On the floor of the valley ahead are nice horse ranches and vegetable farms, very pretty.

Its a chore when you meet some horsemen/women coming on you on a 2 foot wide trail. Push deep into the uphill brush its a long way down,

This isn't even the worst case scenario. The worst case scenario is for fires like this after an earthquake.
I think that was covered on one of those disaster dramas a while back (which I did not see,) but of course fire was the big problem in 1906.

So this is kind of the best case scenario for fire, and they failed.

I was thinking that before the news that it had burned, the fire was downhill and the pool was between, Fire has a time going over the crown and down, so if it was burning the side of the hill going up. That's usually where the firefighters hold the fire at a ridge, when it creeps down the hillside or hits the top.

The bollards were on a mechanism to raise and lower them. When not in use, the bollards were below street-level. Apparently, the mechanism wasn't robust enough.

230 On Sept. 8 2020 a fire (the Almeda fire) swept through Phoenix, Oregon, about fifteen miles from my house. It was a "red flag" day with high winds and tinder-dry vegetation. Or perhaps I should say it was THE red flag day, because there weren't any other red flag days that season.

The fire started in the upper Bear Creek drainage, which is a total wind tunnel in all seasons. I mean, if you wanted to burn down the whole Rogue River Valley, that's exactly where and when you'd start it.

There were rumors that an arsonist had been apprehended. There were also rumors that Antifa was involved (2020). There were also rumors that the authorities wouldn't confirm the fire was set deliberately, because that wouldn't be covered by insurance.

There was another major fire the same day, further up the valley, and another couple-dozen-acres fire in the Bear Creek Greenway in downtown Medford just three days later. The main effect of the Greenway fire was to destroy most of the homeless camps in the city. It was all one hell of a coincidence.

You are correct. I lived in FL for 30yrs and was used to them on our coast. The FL governors know what they are doing and DeSantis is golden to figure out he needed more help than the National Guard.

Created both the FL Guard and a a rapid rescue emergency response team. Both are manned by former Special Ops guys. They are some of the first who made it to W NC and reported from helicopters.

I am still reeling from that horror. In FL, on an island, we knew what we were signing up for. The NC mountains is a 50yr event or so. It can happen but it is rare, like the Asheville flood over 100yrs ago.

Agreed. New Orleans didn't need to spend millions of dollars for a bollard system that didn't last. There was a perfectly acceptable low-tech solution, but that would have taken a few hours of work.

I am hopeful that we are at an inflection point and the Marxists that were allowed to become embedded like ticks are going to become a lot less influential. The catastrophic failures in the "Blue" cities can no longer be explained away.

326 You can tell if a .22 is fired from a Marlin rifle or a Ruger, but not which Marlin or which Ruger fired it etc. After a few shots the lead bullets fill in the distinctive machining marks on the barrel. You also can't do ballistics on a 9mm from a Glock with an octagonal barrel - the barrels aren't machined, so they don't leave characteristic marks on the bullet. However the cartridges ejected from those glocks can be matched to the particular pistol. Always police up your brass.

JLTVs, they're the Humvee replacement. They're also a really easy way to identify the company commander's vehicle, because there's no frickin' way that an Army ring-knocker is gonna ride in a beat up old Hummer like a common infantry soldier when a brand new JLTV is available instead.
