The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

I defy you to find a worse cable company than Optimum, or Cablevision, or The Devil's Carbuncle, or whatever they call themselves.

Open Thread, because composing a rant on a phone is a non starter.

My town set up its own telecom utility because Qwest wouldn't bring in fiber to the area. They did it themselves, and wound up linking with the closest three towns as well in an extended service are. They handle phones as well.
It started out kind of rough because after they started operating they discovered that no one had set up the corporation with the state, but they fixed that eventually.

It is about 90 bucks for phone and internet, and 15 bucks more for Roku. When it first came out I was paying 120 a month for phone and internet from Qwest, and was far worse service.

But it's not warranted. The problem is people expect 100% from them. And guess what, nothing is 100%. Flights get delayed. Internet service has outages. These are extremely complex integrated systems. The fact you get 99% plus up time is pretty damn amazing in and of itself.

I've worked in tech my whole life and roll my eyes when people scream about how things break " all the time". Oh all the time? You mean once a month for 7 minutes? In a month where you conduct 1000 transactions without a hitch the rest of the time? Yeah the system fucking sucks man!!!

30 13 German Authorities Charge Iraqi Couple Over Keeping Yazidi Sex Slaves

Immigration has transformed Germany into a vast Tapestry of diversity!
=======
Islam permits actual slavery, not the pretend bedroom kind. The taking and keeping of slaves is a benefit given to the believers who participate in the Holy war against the infidel. Slaves are often compelled to become converts to Islam. This practice has no compatibility with the laws and traditions of the USA and the post-Medieval West. See John Adams's report on meeting with the representative of the Barbary Corsairs.

38 Amusement in Portland - the Soros DA in Portland's county lost his election, so he is trying to get a bunch of sentences commuted before he leaves office this week. The sentences he is trying to commute include a bunch of vicious murderers.

There are actually requirements for commutation petitions in Oregon - in particular, that the victims and their families have to be informed and have time to comment, which the Soros DA is ignoring.

Welp - a judge ruled yesterday that the commutation hearing will be delayed - until the new, non-Soros DA takes office. The new DA has already denounced the proposed commutations.

Too bad we couldn't do this to Biden.

64 We missed having Gore, Kerry, Hillary Clinton, and Harris as president. Such intelligent, thoughtful people. Our country would be in a better place if we had elected them...especially Al Gore.

Also Humphrey and Carter's 2nd term

I blame Fox News for the election losses. Fox has severely damaged the Democratic Party. And the internet has become Fox on steroids.

I will never forget the swiftboating of Kerry and neighbors saying he was "not a patriot". Kerry understood the war, fought in it, and fought to end it.

Those damned purple heart band-aids Republicans mocked him with were the lowest thing I'd ever seen in the realm of politics.

The attacks against Hillary were personal, not about policy. Same with Harris. They can't see a woman as an authority figure. They don't see how that bias hurts all women.

They don't care how such attacks hurt all women. It is part of the goal, to keep women barefoot & pregnant by disparaging well educated public figures.

The Republicans that lost since 1996 were better than the two R's who won. If given the choice, I'd take Dole, McCain, or Romney over any R president since Eisenhower.

I do not expect 100% of them. I do expect that when they know the Internet is down that they don’t require me to hunt down their outage reporting tool and then wade through several screens just to be told, oh, yeah, we know about that already.

I expect that when I call them to report that every time the wind blows my Internet drops for a few minutes, they understand that the wind blowing does not somehow implicate my cable modem.

I expect that when I go to their web site to see what services I need, I won’t need a degree in advanced mathematics to understand their pricing scheme(s) when all I want is Internet connectivity.

Note: saying “I expect” is a rhetorical construct. I don’t really expect any of that.

84 Morning again, all,

Did we reach any consensus as to what the art in today's Art Thread was all about? I liked it; it appealed to my imagination. I need to look it over some more, and to check out the artist's other works.

I'm sitting in a coffee shop in exciting downtown Boutte, Lousy-ana. Nice coffee shop on a nicely-paved highway. I started out more than an hour ago and cruised up through this town and the bustling, vibrant towns of Paradis and Cut Off, where you see more pickups and trailers than you do sedans (and, I suspect, more dogs and boats than you do people). This mini-road trip was just for the fun of piloting the Buick on a smooth moderate-speed road for a change. A good way to cap off the year.

Honestly, having assisted with tech support in the past, I don’t mind this so much—as long as they’re willing to wait on the phone while I do it.

I saw a meme go by last night or this morning, “why are IT folks so mean?”

I just drove two hours to turn on a server that I was assured by three different people was already turned on.

Several of the Krogers in Portland now have someone checking your receipt when you exit.

The Kroger in my placid Portland suburb doesn't do that yet, but they occasionally station an armed guard at an entrance/exit (which they never did before), and they have started locking up some of the laundry detergent.

Fritz Leiber wrote a short story in the late Forties in which a future American and English society required masks on both men and women. This, I recall, was because there were not a few people who had been scarred or disfigured in atomic warfare a generation before. But the end result was to make the *face* a center of sexual interest. Women would legally go topless, but revealing their faces was considered super-sexy.

The best shows that have remained are on the Hispanic channels. The advertised number of available channels are simply doubled tripled, repetitious. For example, a channel 20 could also be found at 260 and 1170. The exact same offerings, time, station, etc.

Also, I seem to have forgotten that they share names with a few characters. I truly can't remember if that was intentional or accidental. Items like milk, Tide, deodorant, razors and the like are used to convert benefits into items that can be traded or sold for cash and stuff that can't be gotten using the benefits. 163 Has anyone noticed how companies (e.g., AT&T, State Farm) are slowly jacking up their rates by increasing the 'amount due' every month by $5.00? I've already contacted SF and told them that, while their service is excellent and their customer service is great, I'm already looking for their replacement (and yes, I suspect the replacement to follow the same path as SF). This is the monetary equivalent of 'The Holy COHHHH-vid!' ... except it happens to be real. Yeahyeahyeah ... Happy Noo Yeah to all of us, Cap'n Jack.

Now, to check out with a cashier, you go through a passageway into an enormous corral where they keep the registers and staffers. Usually there are at least three or four open, even fairly early in the morning.

I've noticed insurance premiums going up, but not specifically by $5 a month... just a general increase every year.

I think it's part of a plan to make home and auto ownership "too expensive" for a lot of people... thus they will own neither. The push with homeowner's insurance in this regard is well documented. Without insurance on a home with a mortgage you'll likely lose the house. This is by design.
