The thing about 1899 is that it really was a year on the cusp of modernity. Coming into a new century, there was already piped gas, electricity existed, the internal combustion engine existed, the telephone existed, etc. These things were still largely primitive, but enterprising young people could see that the future was going to be so much easier and more comfortable than it had been for their ancestors. And then a few years later powered flight was invented. Heady times.

Those streets are way too clean.
Posted by: Mister Scott (Formerly GWS) at December 26, 2024 04:37 PM (Rcnd3) The city and neighborhoods actually paid people to clean the streets. One of the reason everything is so crappy and cheap now is because since 1899 and today the dollar has lost 99% of its spending power to inflation, and wages have not kept up to it. We are poorer today than we were then, and the "excess spending" that we get taxed for is far greater than it is today. I was looking at pictures and film of 1950's Havana thinking it was terrible what has been done to Cuba, and then I realized that pretty much the same thing has been done to the US as well. I would wear a sports coat from time to time, too. The shirts would wear out when the collar started looking tatty, so I got in the habit of taking the collars off, and no one ever noticed. You don't see shit because there was a constant and large crew of guys with wheeled cans and brooms picking it up. You can see one following the circus parade in the Peabody cartoons. They loaded it onto barges and dropped it in the bay. There were a lot of horse carcasses, though, and that was an industry to itself. Especially in the summer, it was normal for horses to be worked to death.
Those (often Studebaker) water wagons with sprinklers, that are assumed to be keeping the dust down, really had an acid solution to kill germs on the street. May have worked somewhat, but it was mostly about the smell. There was a heat wave in 1896, and Kipling was there to write about the folly of wearing thick wool suits -- while he sat in 'tropical' silk shorts under an umbrella on the hotel roof. He did not expect New York to survive. Posted by: Way,Way Downriver at December 26, 2024 05:00 PM (zdLoL) 101

One of the failings of NYC is that only unionized city employees pick up residential trash and "clean" the streets. Restaurants and construction, demolition debris, is picked up by private carter's, who are immensely more efficient.(Though MAFIA-run, at least historically).

Back in the 1980s, a designer name Laura Ashley (among others) designed women's clothing with a decidedly 19th century flair. I loved that look back then, wore it all the time. I still wear those clothes (yes, still have some dresses from the '80s) and have bought others as vintage items. The comments I get are very complementary; a lot of women say, "You look so nice!" I think, "You know, if you wore nice clothes you would look good, too!" The butcher at the grocery store thought I was going to a Christmas party. Nope: I just change out of my sleeping clothes before I go out.

Afternoon/evening, folken,
Yes, somehow we have this idea that the past was all in black-and-white, because most photographs were and movies continued to be B & W until the early Sixties. The 1899 New York: Many parts like the Lower East Side looked desperately poor, or maybe that's because we know the people there were poor. But Fifth Avenue and Fourteenth Street and the Flatiron Building all looked clean and well kept, and the subway entrance did too. No, I haven't worn a suit in a while. But when Linda and I went to church yesterday, I wore slacks, good shoes, a dress shirt with the collar unbuttoned, and a three-button sport coat I've had for a few years. I wasn't the only one dressed like a grownup, but there were still some with jeans and T-shirts. Clean -- but still, T-shirts.
A black family seated just ahead of us had Mom in a nice dress, Dad in a dress shirt and slacks, the younger boy in a black suit, and the older boy in . . . a red spangled suitcoat that looked like it could have come from an Elton John concert. I have a bunch of old (late-1800's) B&W photos of family. A lot of them are in New Orleans, some in the capitol city later on. Almost all of them depict men in suits, many with some sort of hat or cap and women in dresses... again, many with some sort of hat or bonnet.
I think the introduction of "casual" wear in the 50's and 60's put an end to "dressing" like they did way back when. When I first started to work, professionally in the budding IT field in the 80's it was all shirts and ties. "Dress codes" were a thing. Until they weren't. I know the very dress you're talking about! Alas, no puffy sleeves for me. It was empire waist, the traditional Laura Ashley square neckline and fairly straight to just above the ankle. Short capped sleeves. With pearls and my dark brown hair curled it was perfect. Posted by: nurse ratched at December 26, 2024 06:14 PM (6MCJI) 268
Filler. They do that shit with horse feed. I never feed a pelleted feed because they can add everything from floor sweepings to chicken feathers in it.
There is alot of filler in human foodstuffs too. Posted by: Ben Had at December 26, 2024 06:14 PM (XTmTf) 269
>>Counterpoint: they have done test diets based on 80s levels of activity and the people gain weight because the food has been altered. A few weeks ago there was a video comparing Canadian food with American, and how Canada simply doesn't allow a lot of that crap be be stuffed in there.
I think it's both. No doubt that processed food is a problem but I also think we have become a more sedentary society. Posted by: JackStraw at December 26, 2024 06:14 PM (LkLld) 270
I've watched that vid like 5 times.
It's not passing my BS sniffer. I have to call staged in the modern era. Possible AI. Probable AI. Posted by: Reforger at December 26, 2024 04:55 PM (xcIvR) I have some of that footage from the late 1890's on an old 8mm Castle films black and white newsreel I received for Christmas 1958. The footage you are seeing here is digitally slowed down and enhanced for smooth action and, of course, colorized. I have quite a few of the old Castle films in my 8mm library. Digital restoration of these old films is truly amazing. Right down to removing any damage caused by of improper storage. A former broadcast engineering colleague I've known for many years, works for a company that not only does digital transferring of old film, but complete restoration. I have stopped by a few times just to watch the process at work. Lots and lots of time involved by very specialized people. Posted by: Annette Hanshaw at December 26, 2024 06:15 PM (iODuv) 271
Bacon grease is the best. After it hardens on the plate I scoop it up with a spoon.

Here's that Seattle 1926 video. Tried to shorten the link but most sites want you to register or pay a fee.

Nurse,
Yes, yes! I know the Empire waisted LAs! I bet you did look really good with dark curls. For some reason, my mind's eye envisions Empire cut dresses on dark haired women. Posted by: Brunnhilde at December 26, 2024 06:25 PM (3AwA+) 276

Did you see all those filthy immigrants?
