Meet The PetMorons

These are Sangria and Rooney, both Maine Coon cats. Sangria (the black/gray) is two and a half years old, and she is just over sixteen and half pounds. Rooney, my orange himbo, is a year and a half, and twenty pounds. The table they are sitting on is bone of contention between the two. Sangria considers it hers but Rooney wants to be near her. She likes to sprawl full length on it but he gets up on a corner of it and nudges her until they both are sitting up on it together. The size difference is not due to forced perspective, he really is that much bigger than her. She is rather compact while he is rangy with long legs. (the green blob is a grandchild's Squashmallow picture).

Hi KT, it’s Quarter Twenty.
Passing along a note about my friend Charlie’s dog Buddy.
He passed over the Rainbow Bridge this week.
A black lab mix, he was special to me and a group of friends because we meet weekly for what is essentially a house church. And Buddy was always there to revel in the controlled chaos of a bunch of guys trying to prepare some haphazardly planned meal in a tiny kitchen with an abundance of appetizers, snacks and dropped food. Dutifully cleaning the plates before they entered the dishwasher, he would also incessantly lick hands, arms, and exposed knees of anyone within range. Charlie would usually have to explain to newcomers: “Please excuse my dog. He can’t control his licker.” 70 pounds of friendliness, he loved to accompany the group for a post-dinner walk so he could check his pee mail.
Charlie is also a talented photographer and captured this silhouette a few years ago while watching sunset at Shenandoah National Park. Buddy will be sorely missed by all his friends from The Church At Charlie’s House.

I think Buddy qualifies as a PetMoron. So sorry that Charlie, you and all of your group have lost him. What a great photo.

Thanks for this data point. We have a garden variety orange American Shorthair, who is a beast at 20 pounds, and a giant, gentle lover.

He could do some real damage if he wanted, but his main target is cardboard boxes.

15 Driving into the subdivision yesterday, 4:45 p.m., grubbing around for acorns under the live oaks that line the parkway were two black bears, one full grown, one a juvenal maybe 3/4 size. This, right between two gated subdivisions of a thousand homes each, and two hundred yards away from the busy six-laned US 41 Tamiami Trail not far from Marco Island, Florida.

We stopped to take their pictures and they did not look up from their snuffling and grubbing for the acorns.

It is the occasional scent of these and other wild things that makes Lily the corgi go into a big loud fright howl in those zero-dark-something hours.

21 We've had a few very cold mornings with very dry air. This has brought out scents that Precious the Bichon finds intriguing. Let's say the morning walks have become a bit prolonged. And the more 'interesting' the scent, the faster her tail wags.

22 Talk about rookie mistakes, there I was, savoring the post, when I get to the bottom and there's no comments. Ah, well.

Great post. The distracted ~~boyfriend~~ cat meme is a good one. Our Ony cat doesn't seem interested in the tree (yet - we just got it today and isn't decorated), but she never did take to the cat tree, either, except that's where we feed her (too high for Daisy dog to raid).

We got a scratching pad and put it over the spot on the carpet that Ony had been clawing at. She hasn't scratched the pad, but has sat next to it, probably trying to figure out how to move it so she can get back to the carpet.

Charlie’s dog Buddy and the Egret are especially artsy pix. Other critters are fun to see.

The Elf on a Shelf was originally a Christmas ornament that sold back in the Sixties. My parents have one just like it that was tucked away onto a tree branch gap in the halcyon days when we had live trees for Christmas. In the Oughts the Elf came back into vogue, and someone with more gumption than me made a picture book about it, then someone put them together and it was a hit. The cat in question doesn't look repentant at all, which is par for the course.

Sangria and Rooney are actually siblings? they've been mentioned before on the Pet Thread, but we've never seen pics that I recall. Both are astonishing and impressive, as well as beautiful. They look ferocious (as big house cats often do), but Coons are supposed to be gentle creatures.

41 Miss Linda got first Stirling and then Dagny into the quick-strap Santa jacket, and snapped pics. Both cats were rally quite good about it. Stirling kept walking backward, then leaping up like an exuberant goat, trying to shake this annoying thing off of him. Dagny padded around and wouldn't hold still for long. I'm amazed she got any pics.

Yeah, okay, I snapped a couple too. I'm a terrible sentimentalist. (Or some kind of mentalist, anyway.)

All the tabbies I've known had the M. Dagny the "torbie" -- which means, I gather, a tabby with tortoiseshell patches mixed in -- certainly has the marking.

From what I've read, there are classic tabbies and "mackerel" tabbies. The former has stripes on head, tail, and legs, and the rest looks like a marble cake in the middle (a big "hurricane" whorl on the sides). Mackerels like Dagny have stripes all along theri bodies too.

Linda is not a big horse fan; she finds them too large and kind of scary. We went to take a riding lesson at a stable in town many years ago -- English saddle; I'd have rather had a Western seat, but I got over it -- and she did fine. Her horse didn't really take her seriously, though, and would stand, head lowered to crop grass, when she wanted him to walk.

Back in high school, kids in class used to ask, "Are you gonna grade on a curve?" I had no idea what that meant, as I had always striven to do the best I could on any test. Anything below 70 was failing then, so that gives you a hint how old I am.

54 Jack - the little old lady blue haired birdwatchers of the 90’s - the 1890s - couldn’t stand all the little fluffy birds getting flamed at the feeders, the Audobon society et al, they had a policy of killing predator species. Particularly Cooper’s Hawk iirc.

Red Tails are dangerous to songbirds, though not like the accipitor species I suppose. Of course the predator species are “protected” now.

Around here hawks are more than protected, they are welcomed. The most popular are osprey's and the birders in town, of which there are many, build nests for them. Very common to see them fishing and cruising around. Lot of owls as well. Really, lots of all kinds of birds.

We have a lot of conservation land so lots of room to move arounds.

I think when I was in high school, an A was 90-100, B was 80-89, C was 70-79. BUt that doesn't leave room for a D before you hit the failing mark of 69. Maybe 95-100 was A, etc.

62 Buddy became Charlie's dog when some friends had a newborn and didn't feel comfortable with his rambunctious affectionate style.
In the first week of his new environs he wandered up to a neighbor's back door. Seeing a large black unfamiliar dog, they called Animal Control.
Before Charlie could spring him from Puppy Prison his picture was on the web with a one word descriptor: "Friendly!"

63 Kittehs. Mrs. Brewingfrog and I have had some big ones through the years. She had a big Fort Worth Barn Cat (tuxedo) that weighed in at 25 pounds. After he passed, we got a little grey kitten, which ballooned to 27 pounds. Russian Blue, he was, and a great snuggler for his long life.

66 Cheddar is one of Brie's 6 kittens but he's a big boy now. He developed some 'wounds' on his neck and a swollen lip so off he went to the vet. We had cats with the swollen lip twice before a long time ago with two wonderful kitties no longer with us. The diagnosis then was flea allergy. This time it was a skin infection as the cause of both problems so he's on antibiotics.
Talking of Brie, she always ran from me but whenever I could I would stroke her before she panicked. Finally she no longer runs away and enjoys my attention. Making progress.
It has taken Astrid since early 2019 to make friends with me but now she even sleeps with me, all in the last 2 weeks. (Astrid is Mom to Houdini, Loki and April).

That's why we hated the curve. We had (mostly) tracked classes, and in a freshman year with 1000+ students, there was some very high-end talent, and there weren't many of those who weren't in at least 3 top-track classes.

72 We have a well-stocked and active backyard for birds. In the last month we’ve seen a huge great horned owl sitting on our next door neighbor’s tree out from, and a young Cooper’s hawk ( no bigger than a flicker) in the backyard for hours. The draw is the mice (ugh) that have invaded the garage.
Both birds a welcome to eat them!!

The owl in particular was gorgeous. I don’t understand wanting to kill them to save smaller birds - that’s a fact of nature.

OChem requires a different type of thinking than many other classes - even chemistry classes. Some people who are good at OChem may not be so good in their other chemistry classes.

79 Hawks watch the bird feeders, but crows watch and harass the hawks. I see it all the time at the nearby park - crows will mob eagles, hawks, owls. Sometimes they will get the predator to leave, other times they are completely ignored. The bald eagles don’t GAF, they do as they please.

81 My college years in Africa and then 20+ teaching college Chemistry there, we did not do multiple choice. No Scantrons. Everything was essay style and longhand. The exception was something like 'complete the following equations'. A class of 40 would take me 2 days to grade. 200+ in a class meant 5 days. There was no grading on curves. What you got was it.
We had A, B, C, D, E, F(ail).
Good times.
When I got over here somebody had to explain what this curve was all about. Also had to be told about 'extra credit'. Madness. Definitely grade dilution.

My gymnastics coach insisted we were all on the honor roll in high school to travel with the team.

Yes.
I never enjoyed Physical Chem so didn't do so well. Took to Organic like a duck to water. Also loved Inorganic.

91 We tried to tell the cat that she couldn't toss her toy around next to the Christmas tree. That went about like you would expect. She has shown some interest in the tree this year. Last year, she could barely walk due to an injury. That's when she became an indoor cat. She sniffs at the tree but a sharp "no" backs her up. So far so good. But she understands the word no and generally obeys. She doesn't like the consequences for disobedience.

93 Back in high school, kids in class used to ask, "Are you gonna grade on a curve?" I had no idea what that meant, as I had always striven to do the best I could on any test. Anything below 70 was failing then, so that gives you a hint how old I am.
