Nancy Pelosi Suffers Serious Injuries -- a Fractured Hip -- After Falling Down a Staircase in Luxembourg

Any hip injury at age 84 is a major cause for concern.

NYT:

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi was hospitalized on Friday after being injured while traveling abroad on a bipartisan congressional delegation to Luxembourg, a spokesman said on Friday.
Ms. Pelosi, 84, "sustained an injury during an official engagement," the spokesman, Ian Krager, said in a brief statement that provided no details on the nature of the injury or how it occurred. He said she was admitted to a hospital for evaluation.
Ms. Pelosi tripped going down marble stairs at the Grand Ducal Palace and took a hard fall, according to a person familiar with the incident who was not authorized to comment and spoke on condition of anonymity.
People close to Ms. Pelosi in California and Washington, D.C., speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak for her, said the former speaker fractured her hip when she fell. They said doctors were confident the damage could be repaired with a routine operation, but it was not yet clear whether that would be done in Luxembourg or in the United States.

After Mitch McConnell's recent fall, and Joe Biden's Lived Experience as a Vegetable-American, the demand to implement term limits via a constitutional amendment is going to pick up steam and might actually pass.

You can't pass a law imposing term limits, because the Supreme Court has ruled that the "qualifications" for federal office in the Constitution are complete and can only be modified by amendment. As there are no term limits written into the Constitution, it requires an amendment to impose them.

But the amendment process isn't such an impossible barrier to action when the public wants change. Every month we're seeing problems with the gerontocracy.

I'm not a big proponent of term limits but it just might be we'll finally see them.

Nope, not for Scotus as service for life for justices is actually in Article II of the Constitution (for good behavior means life tenure absent impeachment).

What they could do though is end life tenure for district and appellate court judges proactively (won't apply to existing judges although Stuart v. Laird might suggest that it possibly could be done.)

78 Our system is based on the underlying principle that votes matter. The main check on tyranny and corruption is that these people can be voted out. Most of what they due has "no controlling legal authority" to prevent or punish (to use Al Gore's term.)

We now realize that votes do not matter so much since we can not get the bums voted out. That is a problem. The solution is not to *reduce* the power of the people to vote for who they want, the solution is to restore the power of voting people out of office.

If you get term limits they will just rotate around offices, NGOs, boards, contractors, lobby firms, etc. and all that power will fester without any one person who can get voted out. They will stop even acting like they give a shit about voters since they will not be up for relection anyway!

This will be one more feint to "solve" out problems that really does nothing but make it worse.

I suspect it's mostly that the hip fracture and the mortality share common causes, whether it's because the hip spontaneously fractures, or the person fainted, or the person has neurological issues affecting balance.

While the idjits left in our medical system try to figure out how to set a bone and put a cast on it. I'm only half kidding... When I was a kid, you broke a bone and they had the x-ray done, the bone set, and had you in a plaster cast within a couple of hours, and they cut it off you six weeks later. Piece of cake, and an utterly routine procedure.

Now? They x-ray a tiny portion of where they think a problem might be, often missing the actual problem, and you can wait a week to two weeks to be put into an actual cast. Meanwhile, the bone has healed wrong in that time.

We're regressing quickly.

Yeah, the real cause of many of those deaths would be osteoporosis. It contributes to the fracture happening in the first place, and also prevents timely healing. After being bedridden and in pain for a while the person just gives up.

When I was a kid, you broke a bone and they had the x-ray done, the bone set, and had you in a plaster cast within a couple of hours, and they cut it off you six weeks later. Piece of cake, and an utterly routine procedure.

well that is what happened to me but in the end I chose reconstructive surgery in order to get out of the cast and get recovered quicker (plus Im no spring chicken so healing would have been longish)

but yeah I went to the ER and left a few hours later in a cast having been fully x-rayed. they recommended the ortho consult and he gave me options but that was only two days later.

I guess where we are is pretty decent healthcare-wise

We have them on the run, otherwise they would not be so intent on state censorship. They know that without censorship they will lose the narrative. Term limits will just distract from real solutions that reduce the power DC has.

I also hope she returns to the US for surgery. Medical care in continental Europe is not superior to ours - their protocols are very different and not necessarily effective. Last week. The night the moon was closest to Venus on the horizon. I watched a string of 14 aircraft come over the Bitterroots. All evenly spaced about 1/4-1/2 mile apart and none with any navigation / signal lights.

The only way you could see them was by the reflected sunlight coming off the bottom of the aircraft as they came over the peaks.
Tracking them as they flew over the valley, if you blinked they were gone.
It was a weird sighting of something. What of, I am not sure...

Doesn't matter how good your healthcare is as something as severe as a broken hip aftereffects are worse as you get older. Slower to recover, slower to shakeoff the anesthetic, more inflammation aggravating existing conditions, etc.

Saw my FIL go from a vigorous 80 year old into a shell of himself post hip replacement. Became scared of walking anywhere and a couch potato. Lost him several years later.

285 Last week. The night the moon was closest to Venus on the horizon. I watched a string of 14 aircraft come over the Bitterroots. All evenly spaced about 1/4-1/2 mile apart and none with any navigation / signal lights.

The only way you could see them was by the reflected sunlight coming off the bottom of the aircraft as they came over the peaks.
Tracking them as they flew over the valley, if you blinked they were gone.
It was a weird sighting of something. What of, I am not sure...

Dunno about drones, but for the Hairy Guy...
1. Person filming is often excited. Camera device tends to bob around in & out of focus some.
2. Most people don't use actual film cameras or even VHS tape recorders anymore. they use phone cameras, which tend to have crappy range for good shots.
3. If close enough for GOOD camera pics, human is more interested about putting space between them and the Bigfoot.
4. natural conditions often aren't good for lighting and shadows, which doesn't help either. Patty strolling in the open is a big exception to the rule.

357 258 When I was stationed in Turkey back in the 80's I had colleagues working in security jobs at the various embassies. They hated visits like this. Their wives too. These people would all bring the spouses. Then it was half a day at whatever ceremony was on the slate, then two or three days shopping. My buddies and their wives had to be the escorts. And they better know where to go to get the "good deals!". Some of the stories was incredible.

She died at 94.

364 I heard about an old study that found that tenure in office was more predictive of how people in congress would vote than party. That's probably not true anymore, but people do seem to lose touch with voters over time, so I favor term limits.

Frankly, the problem is not term limits, or an age limit for serving on Capitol Hill, the problem is that people vote for candidates who are obviously past their expiration date. Yeah, I don’t care what your ideology is, someone in their mid 80s is not capable of handling the shit storm that is Congress.

Reagan was 73 in '84. Trump 74 in '20, Biden 77 --and we see how well that went. Trump is now 78. Hopefully he fares better.

Seems to me anything past 72 or 73, maybe 74, is too old to be running for public office.
