Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Nancy Pelosi Suffers Serious Injuries -- a Fractured Hip -- After Falling Down a Staircase in LuxembourgAny hip injury at age 84 is a major cause for concern. NYT:Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi was hospitalized on Friday after being injured while traveling abroad on a bipartisan congressional delegation to Luxembourg, a spokesman said on Friday. Ms. Pelosi, 84, "sustained an injury during an official engagement," the spokesman, Ian Krager, said in a brief statement that provided no details on the nature of the injury or how it occurred. He said she was admitted to a hospital for evaluation. Ms. Pelosi tripped going down marble stairs at the Grand Ducal Palace and took a hard fall, according to a person familiar with the incident who was not authorized to comment and spoke on condition of anonymity. People close to Ms. Pelosi in California and Washington, D.C., speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak for her, said the former speaker fractured her hip when she fell. They said doctors were confident the damage could be repaired with a routine operation, but it was not yet clear whether that would be done in Luxembourg or in the United States. After Mitch McConnell's recent fall, and Joe Biden's Lived Experience as a Vegetable-American, the demand to implement term limits via a constitutional amendment is going to pick up steam and might actually pass. You can't pass a law imposing term limits, because the Supreme Court has ruled that the "qualifications" for federal office in the Constitution are complete and can only be modified by amendment. As there are no term limits written into the Constitution, it requires an amendment to impose them. But the amendment process isn't such an impossible barrier to action when the public wants change. Every month we're seeing problems with the gerontocracy. I'm not a big proponent of term limits but it just might be we'll finally see them. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

We need term limits. I used to oppose them. The voters can impose a term limit anytime by voting out the candidate, I naively thought. Wrong. All it took was seeing vegetables like Diane Feinstein elected to demonstrate that’s not what happens. The system keeps dead husks propped up as candidates to keep their power. Give Senators 2 terms and Congressman 5. That’s plenty enough time and then they can maybe go do something useful with their lives.

Our system is based on the underlying principle that votes matter. The main check on tyranny and corruption is that these people can be voted out. Most of what they due has "no controlling legal authority" to prevent or punish (to use Al Gore's term.)
We now realize that votes do not matter so much since we can not get the bums voted out. That is a problem. The solution is not to *reduce* the power of the people to vote for who they want, the solution is to restore the power of voting people out of office. If you get term limits they will just rotate around offices, NGOs, boards, contractors, lobby firms, etc. and all that power will fester without any one person who can get voted out. They will stop even acting like they give a shit about voters since they will not be up for relection anyway! This will be one more feint to "solve" out problems that really does nothing but make it worse. Piece of cake, and an utterly routine procedure. Now? They x-ray a tiny portion of where they think a problem might be, often missing the actual problem, and you can wait a week to two weeks to be put into an actual cast. While the idjits left in our medical system try to figure out how to set a bone and put a cast on it. I'm only half kidding... When I was a kid, you broke a bone and they had the x-ray done, the bone set, and had you in a plaster cast within a couple of hours, and they cut it off you six weeks later. Piece of cake, and an utterly routine procedure.
well that is what happened to me but in the end I chose reconstructive surgery in order to get out of the cast and get recovered quicker (plus Im no spring chicken so healing would have been longish) but yeah I went to the ER and left a few hours later in a cast having been fully x-rayed. they recommended the ortho consult and he gave me options but that was only two days later. Problem - illegals are pushing down wagers
Solution - raise minimum wage. That is what is going on here. The problem is that politicians are not accountable to the public, voters do not have power, money is coming in from outside district (ie, not voters) and party is controlling the politicians, also bureaucracy. The solution is to reduce their funding from outside of district. Reduce the NGOs. reduce the bureaucracy. We have them on the run, otherwise they would not be so intent on state censorship. They know that without censorship they will lose the narrative. Term limits will just distract from real solutions that reduce the power DC has. What if it wasn't actually term limits we implemented but an age limit, just for congress? Sure you can get elected 6 times to office, but you hit some range between 70-80 in your term and you don't get to run again.
Posted by: buzzion at December 13, 2024 07:17 PM (aRLgQ) 271
Term limits typically have derived their electoral mojo from the idea that people too long in office become corrupted, at a minimum corrupted in the political sense of being attuned to donors and the capital's culture instead of their voters. Not, I think, because of these sad pathetic creatures who simply can't walk away when it's time.
And I don't term limits at state level anywhere they've been adopted have done a thing to affect the political/literal corruption thing. Therefore I won't mind when a federal amendment effort fizzles. Federal offices have 2, 4, and 6-year term limits. If voters don't do their part, they get what's coming to them. As a Catholic, a real one, not a Pelosi one, I must pray that Nan finds her way into the Confessional and comes clean, does her penance, and makes it to heaven. I also have to have hope that she will do so, because I believe all things are possible to God. Nobody said I had to feel sorry for her or even give one tinker's dam that she's in pain and far from home. Jesus said to pray for your enemies. He didn't specify WHAT to pray for them.

Last week. The night the moon was closest to Venus on the horizon. I watched a string of 14 aircraft come over the Bitterroots. All evenly spaced about 1/4-1/2 mile apart and none with any navigation / signal lights.
The only way you could see them was by the reflected sunlight coming off the bottom of the aircraft as they came over the peaks. Tracking them as they flew over the valley, if you blinked they were gone. It was a weird sighting of something. What of, I am not sure... IThe government watchdog admits that the FBI had 26 confidential human sources in and around the Capitol on January 6. I figure it was probably ten times that many, along with lots of actual agents. And all the other agencies involved, must be an enormous total number. I'm reminded of the FBI infiltrating the Klan back in the mid 60s. At one point half the Klan in Mississippi was paid informants. It was a good source of income in a low income part of the country. And the inflated membership numbers helped get the FBI a bigger budget. Posted by: Semi-Literate Thug at December 13, 2024 07:22 PM (t1fZA) 301

258 When I was stationed in Turkey back in the 80's I had colleagues working in security jobs at the various embassies. They hated visits like this. Their wives too. These people would all bring the spouses. Then it was half a day at whatever ceremony was on the slate, then two or three days shopping. My buddies and their wives had to be the escorts. And they better know where to go to get the "good deals!". Some of the stories was incredible.
Posted by: Diogenes at December 13, 2024 07:16 PM (W/lyH) I worked as the exec officer for the Ambassador in a couple of embassies. I had to deal with these visits at least twice a month, if not more. I would buy your buddies and their wives a beer and swap horror tales! Posted by: Moki at December 13, 2024 07:39 PM (wLjpr) 358
Two clips of McConnell the other day; one, him being wheeled in a chair and him at a dais totally zoned out - he was standing there looking straight ahead, introduced by a lady with no acknowledgement, then she asked a question and well, he wasn't there. His body was but he wasn't.

emerita looks wrong
I don't believe emeritus has a gender. Looking at the example, professor does not have a gender. Also she hasn't retired so there. emeritus n adjective having retired but allowed to retain a title as an honour: the emeritus professor of microbiology. ORIGIN C18: from Latin, past participle of emereri 'earn one's discharge by service'. Posted by: Ciampino - stracchino is to die for at December 13, 2024 07:43 PM (i0xsb) 361
I wouldn’t get too excited about Pelosi. My mother had osteoporosis, had the same type of fall and fractured her femur at 82, had pins and plates put in. Six weeks of rehab and came home better than before. Proceeded to live for 12 more years, with eight of those very much mobile.
She died at 94. Posted by: Jen the original at December 13, 2024 07:46 PM (HF17c) 362
I hope she has a full but slow recovery that keeps her from showing up to work the next 2 years. It's almost like picking up a seat.

+++ Honorable??? No one who manages to be elected to congress is honorable. That word does not mean what they think it means. Posted by: Florida Peasant at December 13, 2024 07:55 PM (Lo97M) 364
I heard about an old study that found that tenure in office was more predictive of how people in congress would vote than party. That's probably not true anymore, but people do seem to lose touch with voters over time, so I favor term limits.

Frankly, the problem is not term limits, or an age limit for serving on Capitol Hill, the problem is that people vote for candidates who are obviously past their expiration date. Yeah, I don’t care what your ideology is, someone in their mid 80s is not capable of handling the shit storm that is Congress. Posted by: EddieS at December 13, 2024 08:29 PM (Zz/IG) 366
I used to see a lot of spent R-7 Soviet boosters in the dark skies of northern Michigan years ago, along with other satellites. On cloudy nights listened to the soothing sounds of the shortwave broadcasting Radio Havana. In a lot of ways history turned out better than feared. If not term limits, at least a maximum age, past which you're ineligible to run for election or reelection.
Reagan was 73 in '84. Trump 74 in '20, Biden 77 --and we see how well that went. Trump is now 78. Hopefully he fares better. Seems to me anything past 72 or 73, maybe 74, is too old to be running for public office. Posted by: Steven Fletcher at December 13, 2024 09:35 PM (HY6NV) 368

Term limits have good and bad; Obama was quite the centrist - Illegally 'deemed' Obamacare aside - in his first term. He came out absolutely nasty in his second, term-limited, term.
