I see something that appears to be a smeary pink respresentation of a penis, a mournful silver-gray giraffe's head in the upper right, things that look like Arabian Nights lamps sprouting tentacles that reach toward the center, Halloween colors in the background . . . and with all that, a clear script wishing us "Pursuit of Happiness, Life, Liberty."

Pittman's American father met his Colombian mother while the former was working abroad in the latter's homeland.[2] At the age of five, Pittman's family moved back to Colombia, returning to California in 1963. In contrast to his childhood in Colombia, Pittman's experience in the United States keeps him alert to "the overwhelming hatred that is exhibited by the American population and through actual legislation against homosexuals.”
And yet he's stayed here, instead of, say, returning to Colombia: Pittman is an Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Painting and Drawing at the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. Posted by: Lizzy at November 26, 2024 09:39 AM (u1uWe) 65

Pittman is apparently still alive, apparently more gay than Elton John, and:
"Pittman asserts, 'One of my strongest memories from those years is of how patterning and color were so relentlessly gendered.' He continues, 'I’d show somebody a textile or something, and a common answer would be, no, that’s too feminine, or it’s too masculine. Always within the framework of gender construction binaries." The President that was despised so much that he’s been airbrushed from history is John Tyler, the first VP to take office upon the death of a President. Not popular during his term (1841 - 1845) , he became despised later for supporting the Confederacy until his death in 1862. The city I live in was founded during his last year in office, hence igot his name, about the only remembrance of him left.

"When a candidate has taken a licking the party needs the professionals like Mike, the full-time noncandidates, to reorganize for the next campaign. It is a simple enough rule, and it explains the mystery that sometimes baffles the public (and defeated candidates): why, after a defeat, are the same old politicians still eating the big meals and smoking the expensive cigars? Peg knew the answer to the mystery; the best answer was her man, who was a full-time politician who would be eating the big meals and smoking the big cigars (although he personally did not smoke) no matter how many times Woodrow Wilson got elected president." - John O'Hara, Ten North Frederick Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at November 26, 2024 10:15 AM (dxSpM) 236

ArtForum- “Lari Pittman: A Decorated Chronology”
Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, By Helen Molesworth, May 1, 2013 "Lari Pittman’s paintings are notoriously difficult to describe. Intricate layers of foreground and background combined with a dazzling array of mark-making (spray painting, sign painting, precise curlicues applied like spun sugar, and the list goes on) defy single-point perspective, monocular camera vision, and abstraction. Pittman shows us what the world looks like when hierarchy is banished and everything is equal. It’s no coincidence that looking at his paintings feels like being in a car—objects in the mirror are closer than they appear, a moving landscape perpetually framed behind glass; this is democracy via Los Angeles, and it’s troubling, beautiful, and fantastic. CAM St. Louis’s modest survey (comprising thirty works from the mid-1980s to the present) and its catalogue with an essay by Shindler (and a reprint of my own 2011 interview with Pittman) promise to kick-start a nationwide reckoning with one of our greatest living artists." Oh, his. That explains the pink thing? 🤷♀️ A hard pass for hanging, but interesting. Thanks. Posted by: L - Rooster today, feather duster tomorrow. Lankford and this new clown that replaced Romney are unreliable as well. Trump will have to use the recess appointment power or else be forced to back down (an unthinkably bad outcome). Today was my first real good night sleep in almost 2 months since watching the cats Snowflake and Trumpy. They were up around 5:30 but went back to sleep.
Out at around 8 am. And around 10:15 am, I opened the front door, checked to make sure no cars were coming and they both came running in from our friend's porch across the street. Resting now. >>> I wasn't in on the thread yesterday, but I do like the Rockwell paintings, no matter what the use they were put for propaganda.
I am put to mind that Katte Kollwitz' lithographs were deeply anti-totalitarian (though she was something of a communist and a pacifist) her lithographs from the 20's in protest of WWI were used to support the fascists in Spain Even if Rockwell created those posters as New Deal propaganda, the one that's endured the most is the turkey scene. And it's been parodied and meme'd so much into the cultural memory, all trace of the new deal part has been forgotten with younger generations. Maybe Rockwell would be ticked by that.
