Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

You posted our cats Tiger and Ghost awhile back. They're doing fine. They have a new itty bitty fireball of a sister. This is Callie. Caught her a couple weeks ago when she showed up out of nowhere. She loves Ghost and is fascinated by Tiger, but Tiger is still standoffish with her.

The other pics are Tiger hiding from her on the counter a couple days after we caught her. She was tired of being ambushed. Ghost is hiding under the table for the same reason. LOL.

Hi, everyone!

Our Henry has appeared here a couple of times in the past. He's a 6 year old now and has had a dramatic (and expensive) season recently. He experienced a gall bladder mucocele in April with emergency surgery and is still having followup ultrasounds. We are doing all we can to provide him the best future possible. He is feeling good and watching the treat in my hubby's hand in the pic.
Love the pet thread!

- Kay

Wow! Thanks for the update on Henry! Keep us informed. What a sweetheart.

5 Hi allI just wanted to give a quick update about Mr. Stubborn.
We have had a major breakthrough with him the last week or so. He is actually stopping in the livingroom to relax instead of slinking really fast through. Also he's started to eat in the livingroom with most of the other cats instead of eating in the cat room. Stubborn is also curling up to sleep on a box we have in the livingroom instead of going to the bedrooms.

We are so excited and happy for him. It has taken him over a year, but he is finally realizing he is safe in the whole house and not just the bedrooms.

18 The picture of "dog people" v. "cat people" sums up how I feel about dogs.

I don't like going outside at 3 a.m. on a wintry morning just so my dog can do its business.

On the other hand, it's not much more pleasant to wake up at 3 a.m. by a nasty smell when the cat doesn't cover its business in the litter box...Or doesn't use the litter box at all...

25 Mr Trouble going outside in cold weather is a bit like that pony. First, he eats to fortify himself. Then he goes to the back door. I open it but it's cold so he backs up. We go back to the kitchen and he gets in my lap, at the table, for pets. Repeat above at the front door. Then we do it again and he finally goes out. He is very grateful that he has a warm house to sleep in, lots of cat food and pets.

37 The chrismas tree is also the giant seasonal cat toy. Low hanging ornaments had best not be delicate, but I've never had a cat knock the tree down. Peekaboo climbed up close to the center pole and played where's Waldo when she was young but the tree stayed upright.

43 So, even with a Saturday nap, I'm not too late for the Pet Thread. Yay!

Mentioned last week how one of Daughter's cats, Kismet, came home with a broken tail. Also had a wound on his back. Well the tail is now a stub, and the wound was cleaned, but then she found another wound under matted fur, so, back to the vet's.

I think it may have been a case of "You shoulda seen the other guy." Her husband found a squirrel, expired, half-way under their wooden fence. Failed getaway? Must've been quite a tussle. Kismet doesn't like the cone, but is fairly well recovered, eating & all. And resting. His brother Comet ignored him, at first, also took over the little hut they bought for Kismet. No sympathy, I guess.

Their scent; the variety of species over the years; the individual character of them.. All charming.

49 Pet-related:

We always put plastic ornaments along the bottom branches, because cats would play.

One cat loved a big metal jingle bell ornament. She'd lay under the tree & swat that bell occasionally, just for lazy fun.

Maybe get one to plant outside the living room window, or even one that is small enough to keep inside in a large pot for several years? eg Home Despot sells dwarf Alberta spruce trees which have the 'traditional' conical shape. There are some very nice artificial trees but it's an awkward shape to store 11 of 12 months. I've also considered getting an itty bitty 2-3 footer with lights included.

56 I like how the pony, after making that spectacular leap out the door, does a couple of proud I Did It hops.

When our Daisy Dog takes a dump, she will often run off a bit, and bounce a few times. Both I Did It and I Ran Away.

Speaking of, cats will meticulously paw cover over their poop. The dog will walk a few steps away and kick uselessly with her back paws. One bonus point for trying, I guess.

61 Afternoon, Pet Folken! I overslept in my nap, or I woud have been here sooner.

Stirling the Great Black Cat did something unusual this week. Miss Linda called me and said, "I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself. Stirling turned on the window unit air conditioner!" He reared up, she said, and happened to put his paw on the ON button. The machine started up, and he didn't look frightened.

The real test of cleverness would be if he did it again. So far, no dice (thank goodness -- I don't need him turning it on when I'm not home and running up the power bill).

65 Dagny the aloof Siberian continues to sit on the bathroom sink counter with me when I brush my teeth in the morning. She's already eaten, so it's not that. And this afternoon she slept with me. Bit by bit she's apparenlty getting to approve of me.

On the other hand, the pic of the dog with "Tell me again how you rescued me" reminds me of Stirling when he climbs in my lap in the morning or afternoon.

He earned his keep again this week. He spotted a wasp on the living room ceiling. I killed it and then gave him a kitty treat. This makes something like five of those unnatural spiky insects he's spotted for me.

My cat as a boy, Rusty, never tried to climb the tree when I lived at home. He might have knocked off a couple of the lower ornaments now and then, but usually he just loved to go under the tree and curl up on the white cotton fake snow blanket that Mom put around the metal base. He was remarkably polite too. He knew that he was welcome on the dineing room table if I were reading or writing, but if anything was spread out there -- a model I was building, or the tablecloth for dinner -- he left it alone.

Smarter cat than I gave him credit for being, back then.

69 Northernlurker--

I think you may be right. I'm an introvert and I grew up with cats and had cats all my life until the last one died. I always felt in sync with the cats.

But after that I didn't have a cat for several years I developed a pronounced allergy to cats. We didn't have any kind of pet after that until three years ago when we adopted our dog, Luna. I am now a devoted dog person and can't imagine having a cat again.

Ironically, Luna is very extroverted with humans (not with dogs) and is WAAAY more outgoing than either husband or I.
