Overnight Open Thread – Kickin’ It Old School [Doof]

Doofhottie.jpg

Howdy Hordelings! I’m taking a turn behind the wheel of the ONT tonight. In light of the recent YUUUUGE turnout by Gen X to help Donald J. Trump win back the presidency, I’d like to pay homage to some of the things that I recall from the halcyon days of my own Gen X youth. Care to join me on a little trip down memory lane?

******

Cars

Doofcar.jpg

This is almost exactly the vehicle my parents had in the mid-late 70s. 1974 Chevy Nova 4-door. This color blue. No power locks or power windows. Probably didn’t even have power steering. AM radio only. Bench style seats in the front and back. Separate keys for the ignition and doors. Before the days of “all season radials”, my dad used to put snow tires on the car every winter. That’s how I learned at a very young age how to change a tire. Seat belts???

DoofMom.jpg

******

Console televisions

doofTV.jpg

How many of you who grew up in the 70s / 80s had a TV like this? A tube TV built into a solid wood frame which made for a handsome and sturdy piece of furniture. Each of these beauties was about as heavy as a Datsun hatchback. The clever homemaker could make use of the ample space on top to house the family VCR (with blinking clock) as well as showcase family photos and other fashionable dust collectors. When cable TV came along, the channel-selector box could be placed on top of the console too. Then, when the TV itself stopped working, you could buy a new, non-console one and place it right on top!

******

Sports before big money

DoofCampbell.jpg

When I started following football in the late 70s, one of the first guys I remember watching and rooting for was Earl Campbell. Had a replica jersey of his too. He was a beast of a running back. Just a great bruiser of a player from a time before professional athletes made anywhere near the kind of money they make now. A few years ago, I saw a place in the food court in the Austin, Texas airport with Earl Campbell’s name on it. These old school guys probably made more money after their playing careers than during it.

******

Boom boxes

DoofBoom.jpg

This is the exact boombox that I had back in the day. AM/FM radio and a double cassette deck! AC/DC capability. It had a standard AC cord, but it could also run on five D-sized batteries. Perfect for listening to the radio, playing cassettes, recording from radio to cassette, or recording from cassette to cassette (aka “dubbing” ). My first exposure to bands like Rush, Def Leppard, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden was through this iconic piece of machinery. I still have mix-tape cassettes that I painstakingly curated over hours upon hours. Bet many of you had one like this!

******

Beer can collections

DoofBeercan.jpg

How many of you had one? Is this still a thing? Several of my friends had dads or older brothers with a collection similar to this. Something strangely appealing about a beer can collection to me. Interesting and colorful logos. A slowly developed time capsule. Imagine the collective stories these cans would tell if they could speak of the circumstances around which their contents were consumed. Watching a ballgame. Standing near a grill. Relaxing after a long work day. Of particular not to me in these old collections are the non-tapered cans which had pull-tabs. Ah, pull tabs. Once removed, they turned into curled up razor blades. Some of you probably can still remember the feeling of the cuts they gave. Somewhere between a paper cut and a slice from a steak knife.

Beer can collection valued at $3M

MSG is not harmful because it is not a chemical.

Seriously that was their argument. Which is factual incorrect - MSG is a chemical as is say table salt. And there are plenty of 100% natural chemicals that are harmful.

It was good right up to the point where I drove it into a concrete wall at 55mph which it did not like. (my poor body wasn't a fan either)

We had a Nova - however ours was silver with a red vinyl interior. Not nearly so cool.

My grandparents had that console TV. (We had one too and when my parents replaced it my brother and I got to use it as a puppet stage (I have no idea how they got rid of the TV part).

I just got rid of a large boom box that we had in our living room - realized I didn't play it.

And field day! I just remember the year this girl signed up for the same events as me and beat me at all three. I don't think she did it maliciously. I am just really uncoordinated.

91 Cars: Dad was a Ford man, so ours was a 1970-whatever Torino station wagon.

Console TV: nope, TV on a rolling TV stand. Black-and-white when I was born, but color by the time I was old enough to remember it. Five knobs: VHF, UHF, volume, "tint," and "hue."

More importantly: the Atari 2600 plugged into it.

Boom Box: oh yeah. Tape dubbing. Recording songs off the radio and hoping the stupid DJ didn't start babbling over the outro, or just cut it short. Tapes mail-ordered from Columbia House or BMG, since there wasn't a record store in Bumf---, MN. Had to drive to Target in Fargo for all the latest Top 40 hits.

Beer cans: Dad was never much of a drinker, so no.

93 2 great cars I ran around in - my first car was a ‘71 Torino that I kind of inherited from my grandpa when he died in ‘73; it was a 4 door, but it had a 302 I could put an edelbrock manifold and a holly 4bbl on, and so it turned into one of the ultimate sleeper cars that would surprise people…

But best ever belonged to a girlfriend who was about 5’1” and weighed about 110, and she found this Forest Green 1970 SS 402 Chevelle for $2000 from someone who had to sell fast, had the Turbo 400 automatic with the stirrup shifter on the floor, damn that car could burn rubber with every shift. She was a damn fine girl!

105 Used to have a Radio Shack microcassette recorder. It didn't have a cassette-handling door; the front panel was an aluminum dust cover that slid down so you could just stuff the microcassette into the mechanism. I just checked online; there isn't even a picture of that early model.

135 BTW, if you are on X, there is an account called LibsofBluesky, which details on all the fun hijinks on Bluesky.

Several million Leftists migrated to Bluesky to protest X, and the results were just what one would expect.

After all, the reason why they hated X was that they couldn't censor anybody, so they are making up for it in spades on Bluesky.

One of the major activities on Bluesky is trading block lists (often with thousands of names on one list), so you never have to be exposed to Unapproved Thoughts.

And they are reporting other users to Bluesky for thought crimes, at a rate of fifty complaints per second.

Bluesky said apologetically that they were having to triage the complaints, so they could deal with things like people posting child pornography first.

Bluesky is also automating things - one person showed that if you type in "there are only two genders" into Bluesky, your Bluesky account is automatically blocked within thirty seconds.

First thing you notice is that there’s this big grown man on the field with these skinny high school kids, and he gets the ball and runs towards the end zone, and he bounces the first would be tackler off him, and then the 2nd, and at about the 15 yard line one guy jumps on his back, and then another. They slow him down a bit, but they can’t bring him down, as more guys come. Finally he takes his last step into the end zone and goes down, with 6 guys hanging all over him. It was amazing!

No Novas in the family, but my dad was always a gearhead. The family car was a 2 door Chevelle when I was born. Mom and Dad in front, 3 brothers in the back, and me in my little baby seat on the console between the front seats.

He finally traded it because when I kicked, my little feet could hit the shifter and put it into neutral...at highway speeds.

I always felt guilty being the cause of that, since it was such a kick ass car. But it really was time for a bigger car. The next one was a country squire wagon with the fake wood paneling.

LOL - I remember seeing a rare film clip of Earl Campbell from his high school days at John Tyler High.

That’s not a lot, though. Let’s do some math:

- bluesky claims 18m accts, millions of which were added since the election
- from that, back of the envelope estimate of 9m DAUs (daily active users)
- they claim 3k reports /hr, at peak. 42k /day at peak
- that’s only 1 report per-214 users per-day. Does that sound right?

I think BlueSky is dramatically overstating its user numbers if they’re only getting 42k reports /day.

Adam Corolla pointed out something that really hit home. He said that when he was young he really was impressed with Robert DeNiro because he was such a good actor, he just knocked it out of the park movie after movie. People respected him, some people thought he was a genius.

...and then DeNiro opened his idiot hold and started swearing at people for disagreeing with him and trotting out his gangster voice, and he revealed himself to be a jackass. Even people who agree with him, do they respect him now? Do they think he's so smart when he pops off like that? It ruined him as an actor, he lost all his cachet.

247 I cannot remember the exact years and models but it went something like this:

62 Valiant
mid 60s Carryall
72 Dodge Sportsman Van

never had a new car after this, just an array of different used cars

70s Cadillac
late 50s pickup (someone dropped a big block chevy in it)
70s Lincoln
80s vista station wagon

My older brother Jonathan had a Simca which was a fascinating little car, Joel had a 84 Daytona and an 87 Mustang 5.0 after someone stole the Daytona and thought he could drive through a chainlink fence gate like the movies. It doesn't work like the movies.

252 I have met Shatner at two conventions and both times were good. The second to me was truly insightful into the man behind the scenery chewing.

He was all packed up at his booth to catch his plane when one staffer introduced an attendee and asked Shatner to meet the guy who had had difficulties getting to the con. Shatner could have brushed it off; instead he met with the con goer, spending a few minutes with his fan, before finally leaving for the airport.

I think Chrysler went with Mitsubishi because they didn’t want to get people’s expectations up by using one of the more reputable Jap manufacturers.

I went to a guy's farm not far from Drumheller, AB, to buy a little Diesel genset. He has a very pretty '63 Valiant Signet convertible in one of his shops. Red on red with a white top. And then we took a rid to view some old trucks he has. Over hill and down dale, then down into a little hollow. Rustic cabin (2000 sq ft of it!) on a little spring-fed pond, with a dock. All completely out of sight of any public roads. Last thing I would have expected out there.

Hardly an original thought on my part, but I suspect a lot of ordinary folks who held their tongues for fear of being fired or cancelled? They're losing their timidity. (Doesn't apply to me, because retired.)

In that vein, Trump's transition team sent an email to all AUSAs (Asst U.S. Attys; about 5000 of them in total) last week. It said, in summary:

1) If you disagree with Trump's announced deportation goals & feel you can't comply in enforcing the new policies; OR

2) If you are unwilling to comply with forthcoming new instructions regarding charging decisions and sentence recommendations,

then you should consider resigning.

Fricken nylon gear shift linkage..seriously? First one shredded within the 50K warrantee. Second time was just a bit north on 100k miles. Fortunately it left me in second, so I was able to limp it over to the dealer. Don't recall what that cost. Everyone warned me not to expect more than 100k miles from that power plant, but I retired it at 126k. What did it in ultimately was the salt air of the Jersey shore. Go for it. Fire all 5000 AUSA line prosecutors who've spent their careers prosecuting drug dealers and fraud schemes, etc.

Your hostility should be directed at Main Justice, where they made POLICY. Most AUSAs had no encounter whatever with liberal lawfare.

Concentrate your political fury on trying to fire 5000 career prosecutors, all of whom enjoy Civil Service protection, and 95% of whom were just trying to prosecute ordinary (albeit major) criminal cases.

But they are so rare that some people don't even think they are real, sadly. There's nowhere to put them in the cash register, which is partly why they didn't really ever catch on outside the horse races. Same with dollar coins which I also love and collect.

402 Thanks Doof, that remember When fits right in with what Kindletot said earlier today-

I have a Sunbeam AT-W toaster with the last patent date of 1965, that has no external lever: you drop a slice of bread in it, it slowly lowers it, toasts it and slowly brings it back up to be retrieved. It is the coolest appliance I have ever seen.
Every other toaster has been dull, and pointless and felt like it was made to be thrown away yearly, ALL TOASTERS SHOULD BE THIS COOL, DAMMIT!

Agreed on old Sunbeam Toasters. Ours is A Sunbeam Type T-20B, it was a wedding present to my folks in Feb 1955. Operates as mentioned above, cloth line is unfrayed, works fine.

As K said newer toasters are crap. ules dropped her parents toaster a few yrs ago, the thing just busted apart in pieces. Our's if dropped won't fall apart, more likely to dent the floor.

Why are they being charged? They are not Americans. They do not have rights.

Send them to the border. One year hard labor digging ditches, building the wall, mending the wall.

Chip them. DNA on file. After one year, shove them across the border. If they are ever caught in America again, death.

If they committed any sex, property or violent crimes in the U.S.? Death. They are not Americans. They do not have rights.

A good deal of the Federal bureaucracy is a fraud perpetuated on taxpayers and you’re not going to convince me otherwise by sputtering “B-b-but who is going to process the illegals through the system and ensure their rights are protected??”

MANAUS, Brazil - President Biden toured the Amazon on Sunday, the first sitting American president to set foot in the legendary rainforest.

The visit came as the incoming Trump administration seems poised to scale back the U.S. commitment to combating climate change.

The massive Amazon region, which is about the size of Australia, stores huge amounts of the world’s carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that drives climate change when it's released into the atmosphere. But development is rapidly depleting the world's largest tropical rainforest, and rivers are drying up.

434 Supposedly ATMs in strip clubs in the Portland OR area dispensed a lot of $2 bills, when inflation caught up with $1 bills.
I have wondered about that, is it really a buck tip at a time still in strip clubs? I mean, that's been the standard for like 40 years it can't still be like that can it?
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor
----------
An "ATM" in a bar is not really an ATM, with sophisticated bill dispensing capability. They're more like a vending machine with a credit card reader. Yhey dispense a fixed amount of cash, like 2 $20 bills while charging your debit card $43.
No, it was change back at the bar that came with a lot of $2s. There were a couple of clubs that bar change came back in only 2 denominations, $2s and $20s, with prices set accordingly. Any $1, $5s or $10 coming in went to the office to go into the bank deposit bag.
At the smaller clubs, dayshift with only 2, or 3, or 4 dancers, (unless the girls ot prissy about it) anything on the rack -short of change, that was universally viewed as an insult- was OK, but at the bigger clubs in the evening he bouncer would "suggest" that you vacate the seat at the rack if you weren't tipping sufficiently.

AFAIK, old and out-of-date bills are still worth face value in both Canada and the USA. But bills that are old enough to have a different design, or in a denomination no longer made, like one and two dollar bills in Canada, throw up a red flag if they get used in commerce. As in: "where did you get this? don't you know that bill has been out of circulation for X years? are you that hard up, that you had to break into your piggy bank?"

445 The $2 in the story was 1953 issue. Maybe a silver certificate? I can see someone wondering if that fancy thing was valid. For many years now, I've carried a $2, as my "if all else is spent" reserve. Realized it might get a double-take if I needed to spend it, but never imagined I might get charged with counterfeiting.
Posted by: mindful webworker - but a $3 with Obama on it would pass...!? at November 18, 2024 12:03

Last year some donated a ouple of $2 bills in our donor box. Since then I've gotten several bundles of $2 bills to look for valuable bills.

I'll spend the rest and no one here thinks they are counterfeit. Usual reaction is something like...I save those for my grandson.

So I am actually fighting inflation by keeping some of the "Inflation Reduction Act" Biden money out of circulation. Take that Joe!

Ditto. And that other #34, Walter "Sweetness" Payton (R.I.P.).

I saw Earl Campbell ringside before the '82 Holmes-Cooney fight at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas (college friend's father was a high-roller and got us a couple of $600 near-ringside seats (not a good fight).

Anyway, Mr. Campbell's thighs were bigger than my waist (at that time) ...

As a Catholic you get some cognitive dissonance when you hear about turning the other cheek and then reading about something like the Albigensian Crusade, where Christians under orders from Pope Innocent III (perfect name btw) exterminated the Cathars in France. At least 200k were killed stamping out this heresy. This was in the early 13th century.

Christians don’t have to be total pussies who want open borders, and who pray for the souls of men who kill their family members, which you see on here from time to time.

Combined with a VPN connection, I do not see the harm.

478 Welp, the F!@#$%!ng pellet stove "ate" another auger motor. GRRRRRR!

Auger is centered. Bearing is fine. Mount is secure... I need a different brand of pellets. This batch/brand has too many extra-long ones & they jam the feed, which burns up the little motors.

Dropping the bags (like you would, to bust up bags of ice) isn't enough, and I don't have time to hand-sort all of it, ugh.

Thanks for listening, I feel better now... sort of.

Can be ordered online. Might be worth a try.

NOTE: Don't have a pellet grill. I use LJ pellets for cold smoking. I chose them because I saw a review which gave it top marks for pellet grills. One of the main points was that there are no additives often associated with gunking up the auger.

Posted by: Biden's Dog sniffs a whole lotta malarkey, at November 18, 2024 02:35 AM (js3aQ)

484 We started buying *these* pellets, because they were about $100 less per ton than all the others. And had no issues until a couple years ago. Quality control went out the window I guess, and the stove is aging too...

Now, they cost the same as other brands. Time to go back to the former favorite!

Oh, btw: pellet prices have doubled since FJB was installed. Just like everything else.
