How about a little humor this morning? A man was taking it easy, lying on the grass and looking up at the clouds. He was identifying shapes when he decided to talk to GOD. "GOD", he said, "How long is a million years?" GOD answered, "In My frame of reference, it's about a minute." The man asked, "GOD, how much is a million dollars?" GOD answered, "To Me, it's a dime." What kind of place won't allow refills? It certainly is place I would avoid with every fiber of my being. Well, that's a little strong. I wouldn't go there. Since I'm 29, I remember when restaurants would have "bottomless coffee" on their menus. But it was so long ago that when I lived in England I was shocked to find out I'd have to pay for each cup. There has been some consternation around here, as to what kind of creature I might be. Am I a rogue AI, a Chinese-Arab consortium, a bodiless wanderer among the stars?
I'm actually a recovering warblogger. I started my first blog, isntapundit.com, in February 2002. That's not as early as Daily Pundit or Cold Fury, but I was a fellow-traveler with those guys and they know who I am. Here at AOSHQ, I may actually be Eldest. Perhaps I'll adopt "Bombadil" as my honest, God-fearing nic. I want to report a special dispensation from the Divine: I shall be allowed to quit drinking. My recent alcohol consumption has been on the order of eighty-plus drinks a week for a decade. If you think someone who is that far gone can just choose to knock it off, then you don't understand the limits of human free will. Anyway, long story short, I repented, and now I'm sober and loving every minute of it. I feel the way JJ must feel. I not only get to spend a little more time above ground, I get to be healthy. So many people were talking about how comforting saying the rosary was that, when I was feeling anxious on Election night I got out my Anglican rosary.
It's smaller than a Catholic rosary, 33 beads for the years Christ was in earth, and arranged with "weeks* instead of decades. The prayers are more individualized as well. Which is why I couldn't think of what to pray. Researching different options led me to a long video by the wife of an Anglican pastor in the US. I really appreciated her obvious love for God and other people. It turned out that she has published several books of prayers in the last couple of years. I got one on Kindle and have now been praying regularly, which is something I had really been desiring to do. Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at November 16, 2024 08:55 AM (s9EYN) 51

Anyway, the FAA says the crew failed to execute the mandated right turn after takeoff and the controller had to instruct them to expedite their climb to avoid the possible CFIT.
American Airlines says the crew requested the turn, which the controller approved and that aircraft was never in any danger of CFIT. Having flown that easterly-departure out of HON myself many times, I can tell you that the right turn after takeoff is part of every pre-departure clearance I was given by the tower controller when cleared for takeoff. The crew screwed up. Posted by: one hour sober at November 16, 2024 09:03 AM (Y1sOo) 67

Be nice, try to accomplish good works, love those around me, reach out to the troubled, un**** all that which I have messed up, and pray for those against me.
Posted by: Tonypete at November 16, 2024 09:03 AM (WXNFJ) I have a similar daily outlook--mostly the being nice, and un****ing all that which I have messed up. I've messed up a lot, and I know the Lord forgives me, but it can still never be undone. That's the hardest part to accept. Posted by: Dash my lace wigs! at November 16, 2024 09:14 AM (OX9vb) 95
Being sober gets easier as time passes. My last drink was in 1991. My last cigarette was in 2006. Quitting the nasty weed was far more difficult than quitting booze... it felt like I had shot my friend.

Trust me: It will get even better. Really. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 16, 2024 09:19 AM (omVj0) --- Alcoholism is fascinating to me. Both sides of my family cover the full spectrum, from teetotalers to social drinkers, casual drinkers and then raging alcoholics. If it's a genetic predisposition, it's not equally distributed. Maybe it is social circumstances, or based one's mental stability. I drink a fair amount because I like the taste. I dislike being drunk and take active countermeasures to keep it from happening, pairing each drink with ice water whether at home or dining out. I have gotten drunk a few times after turning 30, but that was (surprise!) in a military setting. At home it rarely happens, the last time being a few years ago when I was experimenting with martini's and grossly underestimated what I had consumed. I am far more cautious about them now. Anyway, it's strange how it can strike one sibling and leave the others unscathed. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at November 16, 2024 09:30 AM (llXky) 139

Posted by: jim (in Kalifornia) at November 16, 2024 09:34 AM (ynpvh) --- My maternal grandparents drank quite a bit, but it didn't seem to affect them. I lived with them for two years in middle school and they had a daily routine right out of the 1950s. After school, (around 3 p.m.) Happy Hour began. My grandmother would have a class of wine and prepare dinner. When my grandfather got home, he would mix a drink. We'd eat, do the cleanup and then each would retire to their respective couch (they had their own TVs so he could watch sports while she watched "Dynasty") with a cocktail or two. That was it. My grandmother showed me how to drink socially without getting drunk, pairing drinks with ice water. She also recommended drinking gin on the rocks at parties because you can on obtrusively water your drink without anyone knowing. I'm teaching that approach to my kids, so that should they drink, they do so to enjoy the taste rather than seek a buzz. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. All you have to do it think about the number of times you saw Pelosi during the campaign compared to the number of times you saw the "Speaker of the House", Hakeem Jeffries. He's a Potemkin speaker. In other news, liver biopsies HURT! But I am feeling less sore every day, so I am thankful for that.
Got a Mediport installed this week, which makes me extremely happy, as I am the world's worst wimp when it comes to needles. Will be meeting with my oncologist on Tuesday to discuss the results of the biopsy and to plan where we go from here. It's so weird, because I just don't feel sick, and I am kinda mad that when I start chemo I will be immediately thrown into not feeling good. But it's my only chance to buy time, so that's what I am going to do. In the meantime, I am taking every opportunity to "Eat The Dessert" every chance that I get 😂😂😂 Posted by: Teresa in Fort Worth, Texas, Plucky Comic Relief, Ace of Spades Ladies Brigade at November 16, 2024 09:42 AM (SRRAx) --- Bless you! Where'd you hide the body update: This past Wednesday agents finally did what they should have done 6-12 months ago. They did an aggressive excavation (2 backhoes in tandem) search targeting every single K9 cadaver dog "hit" from the two prior dog searches, totaling about 20 GPS coordinates from 7 different K9s spread over a 5-acre parcel. Guess what they found... ...nothing. This is once again proving to be a very curious disappearance. Odds had been set at upwards of 95% likelihood of finding human remains by the previous dog handlers, based on the nature of the dog responses. How frustrating. Do you think the body could have been placed there for a while and then removed?
Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd ********** Two possible explanations: 1. Body was temporarily left on the surface (concealed) for some length of time before being moved off-site, leaving some early scents of decomposition that have somehow lingered for a decade and a half. Our timeline suggests no more than 48-72 hours were available. 2. Body was buried on the property in question and the dogs have all been fooled by scent migration over time. GPR has not been able to identify any potential sites for more digging and it is virtually a "needle in a haystack" proposition at this point. 3. I refuse to believe the third possibility,, that six out of seven cadaver dogs were absolutely and completely fooled. Otherwise, what use are cadaver dogs? @189/muldoon: "This is once again proving to be a very curious disappearance. Odds had been set at upwards of 95% likelihood of finding human remains by the previous dog handlers, based on the nature of the dog responses."
That nature has a lot to do with dogs wanting to please their owner/controller. If the human has body language cues that indicates a desire to find something, the dog may well alert that something is there based on that cue alone, rather than there being any actual find. It's a subjective call, and those are iffy at times. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at November 16, 2024 10:14 AM (O7YUW) 221

DIY COFFEE CREAMER ... Back when the Longshoremen's strike seemed inevitable, I bought several extra cans of sweetened condensed milk with the intent of making flavored creamers at home (if unable to find store-bought) ... Earlier this week I tried making pumpkin spice creamer with ground spices (cinnamon, allspice, cloves, ginger, nutmeg) and, of course, pumpkin puree ... After warming everything in a double boiler for 5 minutes, I poured it through a fine strainer which captured the pumpkin puree ... What did not strain out well, however, was the "dust" from the ground spices -- which littered the interior surface of my coffee mug [yuck] ... So, this morning, I tried swapping out all the ground spices with WHOLE spices which pretty much eliminated the dust ... And while it took MUCH longer for the whole spices to release their flavoring into the milk base, I can be very okay with that for the greatly-improved eye appeal ... Anyway, I just wanted to mention this experiment in case anyone else might be interested.

Sometimes I can blow people off, particularly if I know them them and consider them idiots.
But there are new names, and so I feel compelled to engage and correct them. As you may have noticed, I'm a very reactionary person in just about every way. My strongest motivation to write is to rebut something I've read. Just about all my books were inspired to "fix" someone else's version, either of Star Wars or history. I guess I'll determine my next writing project based on how angry I get about something. Seems to be the pattern. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd Or, you could just STFU. Adorable Jesus! Divine Pattern of perfection to which we should all aspire. I will endeavor this day to follow Your example: to be mild, humble, chaste, zealous, patient, charitable, and resigned. Inline my heart to keep Your commandments. I am resolved to watch over myself with the greatest diligence and to live soberly, justly, and piously for the time to come. I will take care of my words, that I may not offend with my tongue. I will turn away my eyes , that they may not see vanity; and I will be particularly attentive not to relapse this day into my accustomed failings, but to struggle against them with Your gracious assistance. Enlighten my mind, purify my heart, and guide my steps, that I may pass all my life in Your divine service. Amen. Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at November 16, 2024 10:19 AM (s9EYN) 234

That nature has a lot to do with dogs wanting to please their owner/controller. If the human has body language cues that indicates a desire to find something, the dog may well alert that something is there based on that cue alone, rather than there being any actual find. It's a subjective call, and those are iffy at times.

The media freakout this time around seems more subdued to me. In 2016 it was full on panic. Now it’s more like going through the motions for their audience. As much as they hate Trump nobody truly believes he’s a threat to our most precious democracy and all the rest. Their sub 100 IQ readers/viewers do so they play along.

Here is a quote from Thune: you tell me is I’m being pessimistic or realistic…
Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) says that President-elect Trump’s controversial Cabinet picks face difficult paths to confirmation in the Senate, warning, “None of this is gonna be easy.” Thune acknowledged during a Thursday evening interview with Fox News’s “Special Report with Bret Baier” that a few Republican senators are likely to oppose former-Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), Trump’s choice to head the Department of Justice, and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Trump’s nominee to head the Department of Health and Human Services. “You have to have all Republicans vote to recess, as well. So the same Republicans … that might have a problem voting for somebody under regular order probably also has a problem voting to put the Senate in the recess,” he said, adding that the GOP-controlled House would also have to enter into an extended recess. Posted by: It is Go Time Donald at November 16, 2024 10:54 AM (ssxZs) 312
I think there was a scenario floated where Trump could apparently put the Senate in recess, or adjourn it, making possible recess appointments for his picks. I haven't looked into that scenario to see if it's remotely plausible or not, but if so it would negate all the BS that the Senate will throw at every candidate they oppose.
Potentially. It would also result in a major public relations shit storm for his administration as the MSM goes full Hitler on him. Again. Posted by: Martini Farmer at November 16, 2024 10:55 AM (Q4IgG) 313

IU seems to be getting serious about football again. My dad worked for IU for forty some years. My son graduated from IU school of economics. Many years ago the university gave employees of the athletic department free football tickets. Dad was part of the athletic department so I used his tickets to attend at least one game per season. But I didn't watch the games on TV. I never saw the team win. No once, did I sit in that stadium and see the team win.
I did see a few of the players one night when I took my son to the ER. The football team was attending a rather wild party and a running back got stabbed. Posted by: Madame Mayhem (uppity wench) at November 16, 2024 11:03 AM (4XwPj) 333

This is a whole new ballgame. Things are going to be different. Posted by: Sharon(willow's apprentice) -- It's a big, if not main, reason Saban retired. There are no teams any longer, just paid players. I just saw where Michigan is trying to buy some QB for $10.5M. I think there's going to be a LOT of ups and downs. It's going to be fun to watch in it's own way, but it's not because teams are built and consistent. It will be because so many crazy and unpredictable games will happen that won't mean anything from one season to the next. Nick Saban just said on college gameday that Indiana was a bit of a faker this year. He was more diplomatic but he pointed out they’ve played a cupcake schedule. They’re gonna get whooped and whooped good in Columbus next Saturday. Nice story but if they played Georgia’s schedule they’d have 4+ losses

What does that have to do with how senators from Alaska and Maine will vote on nominations? And since when do senators give a fuck what voters want? lol.

I don't disagree, Chiles has shown tremendous athleticism and the ability to extend plays and make things happen. His decision-making, however, has been atrocious at times, which should only improve with experience.

Why do you think McTurtle did the senate coup in the first place? It’s to get the #resistance up and running before the nominating votes begin. This shit doesn’t happen by mistake or without planning.

Posted by: Madame Mayhem (uppity wench) at November 16, 2024 11:12 AM (4XwPj) The Four Turnings was a very insightful book/theory about cyclical patterns in US history. Too long to go into in a post like this, but basically the times are ripe for a total reset of government and society. Posted by: Tom Servo at November 16, 2024 11:16 AM (W6hoT) 379

listen, there's a FUDster in the house, a lot of the regulars don't understand we're at the dawn of a First Turning and that the old paradigm is in the process of getting dismantled if not totally blown up. Will it be a seamless process? Hell no. But the waves and cycles of history are on America's side. We are at the dawn of an American Restoration. If ppl want to perseverate and worry about every little glitch or huge obstacle they perceive, what TF ever. Just farking enjoy a historic win and if you're that much of a nervous nellie, just remove yourself from media totally like zombie did and enjoy your life. Oh, if I could get some prayers sent my way...I'm estranged from what used to be my closest family members, ever since Covid, politics, and my marriage to someone they don't approve of messed up the groove. (Which I'm fine with. But I always thought we'd be a close knit family and right now we aren't. And it hurts.) I got a bombshell of family news in my face the other day, and sent off a reply. Waiting to hear back. Praying it's read in the spirit in which it's intended and that it starts some needed conversations.

Tom, that was an excellent brief description. I had thought we were on the dawn of the First Turning when Trump first got elected, but no, the Fourth Turning still needed to rumble and roil. the other day I came across a quote from the authors. In 1990, they predicted that our nation would experience a significant event of change just prior to 2025. Posted by: kallisto at November 16, 2024 11:48 AM (dCxaZ) 393

Heard from my uncle this morning that my grandmother passed away. She'd been suffering from dementia and has pretty much been gone for the last few years, so there's at least some gratefulness that she's free of that now and gone to be with grandad and dad and my other uncle, to temper the sadness. The last of my grandparents, after my mom's mom passed last year.
Prayers also for my mom, who's having increasing mobility and vision issues and may also be showing some minor/early signs of dementia. Posted by: tintex at November 16, 2024 12:24 PM (PjWxU) 397
What kind of place won't allow coffee refills?
The first overseas job I had was in Germany. I quickly discovered their coffee shops where folks had coffee and read newspapers, books, etc. I, too, sat there for some time drinking coffee and reading newspapers. It was only when the bill came that I discovered refills were not free. I barely had enough money on me to get out of there alive. Posted by: LCMS Rulz! at November 16, 2024 12:37 PM (bufu1) 398
