Saturday Classical Coffee Break & Prayer Revival (11/16/24)
What kind of place won't allow refills? It certainly is place I would avoid with every fiber of my being. Well, that's a little strong. I wouldn't go there.
2. Be nice, be kind. And please don't jump on the furniture.
3. Running with sharp objects is not allowed, permitted, OK or thought highly of here.

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update. Prayer Requests: 10/7 – Piper requested prayers for her stepfather, who fell and broke his wrist. He will need surgery to put a plate in. He is in a lot of pain.
11/2 Update – Piper’s stepfather’s surgery went well and he is in PT. 10/19 – Jewells said the CT scan showed growth of 3 tumors on her right lung. There are also new bone lesions on her spine, lower back, and ribcage, and fluid around both lungs which will need to be drained. Not great news, but expected after being off chemo since April.
10/26 Update – Jewells had an infusion on 10/17, and all the terrible side effects came back with a vengeance. That’s it. She’s done. NO MORE. She is looking into ivermectin and fenbendazole. 10/19 – mindful webworker asked for prayers for an elderly neighbor’s health, and strength and solace for his wife and family. 10/21 – J proposed a group prayer, on 10/29 at noon (Central) to ask God for an end to the corruption in DC and a return to the American values that made this country great. 10/23 – T gave an update that Vic, who used to do the morning report on Ace, has passed away. He had been in poor health for some time. 10/24 – buzzion asked for prayers for his friend Christina. She is dealing with a lot of struggles right now and could use the positive prayers. 10/24 – B requested prayers for a friend (age 43) who is having heart and lung problems. He had to take “the shot” for work, so B is concerned about what that might mean.
11/6 Update – The friend does have cancer. He was given less than 12 months to live. Prayers for his family (his wife and 4 daughters, ages 6 – 14) are very much appreciated. 10/25 – Mental Block requests prayers as his prostate cancer journey transitions from active surveillance to deciding between two treatment options: a prostatectomy or 6 weeks of radiation combined with hormone therapy. Treatment will begin by mid-December. 10/26 – FenelonSpoke asked for prayers for her son, a recent college graduate who is looking for work. He was recently offered a job, but the hiring supervisor hasn’t yet worked out the funding for the position. If you could pray that rough places are made smooth, they would appreciate it. Thanks very much. 10/26 – Semi-anonymous requested prayers for D, who suffered one or two moderate strokes last month. He is ambulatory but has lost half of his vision and had to fight with his insurance company for weeks to get approved for in-home rehab, and for M, who is going in for surgery for the amputation of her lower leg due to a non-cancerous but highly invasive tumor. 10/26 – W sent the following prayer request, with apologies to General Patton –
“Almighty and most merciful Father, we humbly beseech Thee, of Thy great goodness, to restrain these immoderate rains election fraud with which we have had to contend. Grant us fair weather for Battle elections. Graciously hearken to us as soldiers American Citizens who call upon Thee that, armed with Thy power, we may advance from victory to victory and crush the oppression and wickedness of our enemies the swamp, and establish Thy justice among men and nations. Amen.” 10/26 – Teresa in Fort Worth asked for prayers. She got some troubling and totally unexpected medical news on 10/25, and is being referred to an oncologist to see where she goes from here. She said she is freaking out because this wasn’t even on the radar. It was found while being tested for something completely unrelated.
11/8 Update - It turned out to be bile duct cancer, which has locally metastasized into the liver. The plan is for 3 rounds of chemo starting after Thanksgiving, and then surgery in February or March. This is a rare cancer (8000 cases/year), and aggressive (5 year survival rate of 2-3%). Teresa plans to fight as hard as she can, but this is the situation. She appreciates the thoughts and prayers. 10/27 – Jim Sunk New Dawn posted an update. He was feeling poorly at the TxMoMe. Aviator (a neurosurgeon) and Nurse Ratchet visited with him for a while, and the doctor gave him a “look over”. He insisted that Jim visit his local ER first thing on Monday. He did so, and was in the hospital until Thursday. Jim was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS). He has a 3-5 year life expectancy. He appreciates a raft of Horde Prayers – y’all is the Best Horde EVER! 10/31 – Nan in AZ is thankful for all the prayers; she got good news from the cardiologist this week that after the heart attack and hospitalization in July, and 3 stents, the ejection fraction is back to normal and the external defibrillator has been discontinued. She has to follow up in 4 months, and will be able to resume full function and work, caring for her 84 year old mom. Good is good! 11/2 – FB asked for prayers for his friend, Jeff, who was just diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He started chemo this week. They’ve been friends for over 30 years; their daughters grew up together, and Jeff is the best fly fisherman FB ever met. Please pray that they can fish the spring steelhead run together. 11/2 - Farmer Bob requested prayers. His older sister is suffering, as her son with autism is hospitalized in a medically induced coma, fighting sepsis from a skin lesion. Her grandson, whom she has raised, has significant medical issues which required a liver transplant. His father has descended into the madness of radical transgenderism. Farmer Bob’ s younger sister is a substance abuser whose behavior has alienated her from the family. Please pray for them, too. 11/2 – J.J. Sefton posted that his latest MRI came back negative. It looks like he has a good shot at beating the odds and stats for glioblastoma. He sends his thanks for the prayers, and he sends prayers, too, for all those who are suffering. 11/2 – Stateless’ 88 year old mother, who had been doing well, has pain in her side after eating. If she lays down, it goes away. She has been treated for diverticulitis using antibiotics, but that has not helped. They are also trying changes to her diet: probiotics, yogurt, etc. They will bring her to ER for a CT scan if needed. 11/6 – Morgan, loyal lurker, is postponing his employment decisions until the new year. He asks that God reveal His will for him, and what direction He wants him to take. He also asks for blessings on Misanthropic Humanitarian for all his efforts on the ONT and his well-deserved retirement. 11/8 – Jim in Kalifornia could use prayers. He was scheduled for laparoscopic surgery to clean abscess(es) and add drain. 11/8 – Ron asked for prayers for his mother, who lost her vision and also fell. They are hoping for a medical procedure in the near future to restore (some of) her vision, and that the fall didn’t injure her too badly. 11/9 – SD requested prayers for her husband, whose kidney function is declining. They had a scare when an ultrasound suggested a mass on his right kidney, but thanks be to God, the CT scan said it was no mass, just an irregularly rotated lobe of his kidney. He sees a nephrologist on 12/3. 11/9 – tbodie Lurker sent thanks for the prayers. Tbodie had follow-up surgery on 11/6, and it went well. 11/10 – Farmer asked for prayers for Julie, who went to ER and almost died. She had “septic shock with multi organ failure secondary to perforated gastric ulcer with kidney and liver failure”. 11/13 – NR Pax requests prayers for his friend’s family. They have to sell their home and move because the local drug dealers have been making escalating threats to them. Morning. Been out of hospital since Tuesday eve. Still have drain, on 2 antibiotics and an antifungal for another dozen days. My anti-rejection regimine was reduced to allow me to fight infection(s), but at a potential risk to transplant kidney. Oh well, that's life.

I'm actually a recovering warblogger. I started my first blog, isntapundit.com, in February 2002. That's not as early as Daily Pundit or Cold Fury, but I was a fellow-traveler with those guys and they know who I am. Here at AOSHQ, I may actually be Eldest. Perhaps I'll adopt "Bombadil" as my honest, God-fearing nic.
I want to report a special dispensation from the Divine: I shall be allowed to quit drinking. My recent alcohol consumption has been on the order of eighty-plus drinks a week for a decade. If you think someone who is that far gone can just choose to knock it off, then you don't understand the limits of human free will.
Anyway, long story short, I repented, and now I'm sober and loving every minute of it. I feel the way JJ must feel. I not only get to spend a little more time above ground, I get to be healthy.
All I want to do is weep and shout for joy!

A buddy of mine had a similar experience. He was caught up in drinking far too much. Then one day he gave himself over to the Lord and the next day he woke up stone cold sober without any desire to drink another drop.

Your body can be tricked into thinking you're headed down when headed up. Quite a few crashes resulted from not believing the instruments.

So many people were talking about how comforting saying the rosary was that, when I was feeling anxious on Election night I got out my Anglican rosary.
It's smaller than a Catholic rosary, 33 beads for the years Christ was in earth, and arranged with "weeks* instead of decades. The prayers are more individualized as well.
Which is why I couldn't think of what to pray. Researching different options led me to a long video by the wife of an Anglican pastor in the US. I really appreciated her obvious love for God and other people. It turned out that she has published several books of prayers in the last couple of years. I got one on Kindle and have now been praying regularly, which is something I had really been desiring to do.

Anyway, the FAA says the crew failed to execute the mandated right turn after takeoff and the controller had to instruct them to expedite their climb to avoid the possible CFIT.
American Airlines says the crew requested the turn, which the controller approved and that aircraft was never in any danger of CFIT.
Having flown that easterly-departure out of HON myself many times, I can tell you that the right turn after takeoff is part of every pre-departure clearance I was given by the tower controller when cleared for takeoff.
The crew screwed up.

When I wake up, it's clear that God has given me one more day to; Be nice, try to accomplish good works, love those around me, reach out to the troubled, un**** all that which I have messed up, and pray for those against me.
I fail most days, but - I'm giving it an honest try.

Being sober gets easier as time passes. My last drink was in 1991. My last cigarette was in 2006. Quitting the nasty weed was far more difficult than quitting booze... it felt like I had shot my friend.

I am pretty sure the Germanwings air disaster from a few years ago, where the co-pilot locked the crew out of the cockpit and flew the plane in the Alps, was described essentially as a 'CFIT'.
Very sad story.. never really got all the details out, but think the co-pilot was off (or on) some psychiatric meds and had been recommended 'not to fly' by his doctors..

Alcoholism is fascinating to me. Both sides of my family cover the full spectrum, from teetotalers to social drinkers, casual drinkers and then raging alcoholics. If it's a genetic predisposition, it's not equally distributed. Maybe it is social circumstances, or based one's mental stability.
I drink a fair amount because I like the taste. I dislike being drunk and take active countermeasures to keep it from happening, pairing each drink with ice water whether at home or dining out.
I have gotten drunk a few times after turning 30, but that was (surprise!) in a military setting. At home it rarely happens, the last time being a few years ago when I was experimenting with martini's and grossly underestimated what I had consumed. I am far more cautious about them now.
Anyway, it's strange how it can strike one sibling and leave the others unscathed.
Trust me: It will get even better. Really.

My dad was an alcoholic and mom left him after 10 years of his bullshit. I loved my dad but the damage he did can't even be measured. I don't drink much anymore since it was pretty much forbidden while on chemo. Now that I'm done with that shit forever I'm indulging in a little wine every evening. I miss my tequila!!

My maternal grandparents drank quite a bit, but it didn't seem to affect them. I lived with them for two years in middle school and they had a daily routine right out of the 1950s. After school, (around 3 p.m.) Happy Hour began. My grandmother would have a class of wine and prepare dinner. When my grandfather got home, he would mix a drink.
We'd eat, do the cleanup and then each would retire to their respective couch (they had their own TVs so he could watch sports while she watched "Dynasty") with a cocktail or two.

My maternal grandparents drank quite a bit, but it didn't seem to affect them. I lived with them for two years in middle school and they had a daily routine right out of the 1950s. After school, (around 3 p.m.) Happy Hour began. My grandmother would have a class of wine and prepare dinner. When my grandfather got home, he would mix a drink.
We'd eat, do the cleanup and then each would retire to their respective couch (they had their own TVs so he could watch sports while she watched "Dynasty") with a cocktail or two.

I shut the alcohol right off shortly after getting out of the military a person diagnosed me as inflicted by the Vietnam Syndrome of dealing by booze with it. That literally yanked me back into reality by virtue of the immense respect I have for that individual plus when he speaks, you listen.

In other news, liver biopsies HURT! But I am feeling less sore every day, so I am thankful for that.
Got a Mediport installed this week, which makes me extremely happy, as I am the world's worst wimp when it comes to needles.
Will be meeting with my oncologist on Tuesday to discuss the results of the biopsy and to plan where we go from here. It's so weird, because I just don't feel sick, and I am kinda mad that when I start chemo I will be immediately thrown into not feeling good. But it's my only chance to buy time, so that's what I am going to do.
In the meantime, I am taking every opportunity to "Eat The Dessert" every chance that I get 😂😂😂

This is once again proving to be a very curious disappearance. Odds had been set at upwards of 95% likelihood of finding human remains by the previous dog handlers, based on the nature of the dog responses.

Treatments are much better today than they were when my wife was diagnosed more than 16 years ago. Many are not as harsh on the body. Monoclonal antibody treatment has come a long way.

Sometimes I can blow people off, particularly if I know them them and consider them idiots.
But there are new names, and so I feel compelled to engage and correct them. As you may have noticed, I'm a very reactionary person in just about every way. My strongest motivation to write is to rebut something I've read.
Just about all my books were inspired to "fix" someone else's version, either of Star Wars or history. I guess I'll determine my next writing project based on how angry I get about something. Seems to be the pattern.

Update on dead cat:
So, being a giant weenie, I opted to go somewhere to have dead cat removed from behind engine.
Not having a complete view, I thought the cat was only recently dead. I was informed the cat was, in fact, in an advanced state of decomposition and had already "popped."
Fuck me...
I paid a great deal of money but from what I was told it was basically worth it.
The smell probably isn't going away, though.
So, being a giant weenie, I opted to go somewhere to have dead cat removed from behind engine.

That nature has a lot to do with dogs wanting to please their owner/controller. If the human has body language cues that indicates a desire to find something, the dog may well alert that something is there based on that cue alone, rather than there being any actual find. It's a subjective call, and those are iffy at times.

DIY COFFEE CREAMER ... Back when the Longshoremen's strike seemed inevitable, I bought several extra cans of sweetened condensed milk with the intent of making flavored creamers at home (if unable to find store-bought) ... Earlier this week I tried making pumpkin spice creamer with ground spices (cinnamon, allspice, cloves, ginger, nutmeg) and, of course, pumpkin puree ... After warming everything in a double boiler for 5 minutes, I poured it through a fine strainer which captured the pumpkin puree ... What did not strain out well, however, was the "dust" from the ground spices -- which littered the interior surface of my coffee mug [yuck] ... So, this morning, I tried swapping out all the ground spices with WHOLE spices which pretty much eliminated the dust ... And while it took MUCH longer for the whole spices to release their flavoring into the milk base, I can be very okay with that for the greatly-improved eye appeal ... Anyway, I just wanted to mention this experiment in case anyone else might be interested.

I am very pleased with the Trump picks. I just don’t think most of them will be confirmed. Rubio will be. Everyone else so far? I wouldn’t bet on any of them individually. Not to say they will all be voted down. Just that no single one on their own is guaranteed to make it through.

The media freakout this time around seems more subdued to me. In 2016 it was full on panic. Now it’s more like going through the motions for their audience. As much as they hate Trump nobody truly believes he’s a threat to our most precious democracy and all the rest. Their sub 100 IQ readers/viewers do so they play along.
Even on places like Reddit there are certainly the lunatics. But overall it’s somewhat low energy freakout.

IU seems to be getting serious about football again. My dad worked for IU for forty some years. My son graduated from IU school of economics. Many years ago the university gave employees of the athletic department free football tickets. Dad was part of the athletic department so I used his tickets to attend at least one game per season. So far, the team has done everything right. Picked all the right players, started the season with the biggest win margin of all time in the most important opening play. I have faith that they really know what they are doing and have gamed out the rest this time.

I think the answer to that is for Trump to very publicly state that he will not wind down his campaign apparatus because he'll be using to primary any Senator who opposes him *in any way,* and ask his supporters to turn out enough masse to end their careers. That'll probably chasten most of them.

Also keep in mind technically the GOP has 53 senators. But in reality it’s at best 51. Murk and Colins are essentially Democrats who cosplay as Republicans. So any vote for a nominee is already at 49 NO votes before the RINOs step up to the plate.

Skip, I really can't figure out how your light cream is going bad. I buy two quarts at a time and they keep in the fridge fine. When I gave up sugar, light cream became a necessary component to the perfect cup of coffee. The date on the containers is usually weeks out from when I buy it. Where are you buying it?

They've already told Congress they will primary anyone that stands in the way of confirmation. And they heard from folks that wanted Scott as majority leader. Might be a good time to wait and see what happens

Oh, if I could get some prayers sent my way...I'm estranged from what used to be my closest family members, ever since Covid, politics, and my marriage to someone they don't approve of messed up the groove. (Which I'm fine with. But I always thought we'd be a close knit family and right now we aren't. And it hurts.) I got a bombshell of family news in my face the other day, and sent off a reply. Waiting to hear back. Praying it's read in the spirit in which it's intended and that it starts some needed conversations.

Thank you all for your prayers for our family. My dear BIL passed away yesterday morning. He was at peace and surrounded by family and friends during his last weeks on this earth. We pray there is good fishing in heaven😉. Thank you again, Annie, for this weekly prayer time.

Heard from my uncle this morning that my grandmother passed away. She'd been suffering from dementia and has pretty much been gone for the last few years, so there's at least some gratefulness that she's free of that now and gone to be with grandad and dad and my other uncle, to temper the sadness. The last of my grandparents, after my mom's mom passed last year.
Prayers also for my mom, who's having increasing mobility and vision issues and may also be showing some minor/early signs of dementia.

What kind of place won't allow coffee refills?
The first overseas job I had was in Germany. I quickly discovered their coffee shops where folks had coffee and read newspapers, books, etc. I, too, sat there for some time drinking coffee and reading newspapers. It was only when the bill came that I discovered refills were not free. I barely had enough money on me to get out of there alive.
