Election Thoughts

Swing State Voters Make Me Wanna Party Like It's Time for Cautious Optimism

"I'm out of clever things to say about Nevada, Pruser tweeted on Monday. "Ten days in, and Republicans will not stop." Twelve days in, and they're still going strong. Pruser also noted that both parties are running out of their most reliable, 3/3 voters — people who voted in three of the last three elections. Meanwhile, "Republicans expand their gains in low and no-frequency voters."

Silver has Nevada at 50/50, but the betting sites both have him at 66% odds.
It would be foolish to put Nevada in the bank for Trump, but the trends are good.
Nobody knows what effect Democrat shenanigans will have on the final totals, but looking at these early numbers, you'd much rather be in Trump's position than Harris's.

Follow the link for news about the trends in Pa and NC too.

You Don't Hate The Press Enough

This is what passes for news these days.

‘It’s power at any cost’: JD Vance’s favorite Magic: The Gathering deck tells us all we need to know

In the Magic community there are always memes going around about what your deck says about you. Red is for all or nothing gamblers. Blue is for conceited Rick and Morty fans. Black is "either an edgelord or was an edgelord".
Almost all of this is light-hearted, and most players who spoke to The Independent said you can’t really tell much about a person’s deeper psychology by what cards they choose.
Still, people didn’t mince words about Yawgmoth’s Bargain. "Annoying and shitty to play against" was one Reddit user’s verdict. "You know the concept of a ‘power gamer’? Bargain players were power gamers," said another.
Some noted the philosophical implications of a black mana themed deck – the type you’d build around Yawgmoth’s Bargain – which is traditionally associated with "greed, ambition, dominance, wickedness, the dead and undead, vampires, demons, blood magic".
Kunce argues that there is a thematic resonance for his fellow former Marine as well. "The idea of it is a deal with the devil, right? You’re selling your soul for power. And it’s very fitting for the man whose favorite card it is,” he said. “It’s power at any cost, and that seems to be what he’s into."

Kunceis the same guy who hosted a photo op at a shooting range and wound up wounding a reporter. He was hit by fragments from a steel target. I mean, just look at this dog's breakfast of idiocy:

range day.jpg(Nurse Ratched is having a stroke right about now)

The idiot with Kunceis is Adam Kinzinger, the former “Republican” who the media loves to trot out as as supposed “Conservative”. They're shooting at steel targets. With long guns. At less than 10 feet. Kinzinger has his eye pro on to of his head, and his rifle has a gigantic scope. To make a shot at less than 10 feet. There's Tannerite on the table between the shooters and the targets! The longer you look, the worse it gets.

Open Borders

Inside America’s Fastest-Growing Criminal Enterprise: Sex Trafficking

At the barbecue joint off Route 75 in Dallas, Lisa pulls out her phone to show me the dozen or so online platforms that traffickers and pimps use to sell girls for sex. The platforms—which include apps like TikTok, OnlyFans, and Facebook—are chockablock with ads of women, usually wearing lingerie, their faces covered to prevent anyone guessing their age. The sheer number of ads is astonishing. “Each week, we track over 12,000 ads for women in Houston, 2,600 in San Antonio, 3,500 in Austin, and 14,000 in Dallas,” says Lisa.

I ask her if the sex trafficking of migrant girls had increased since the Biden administration threw open the border, leading to 8 million migrants crossing the southern border since 2021. “Yes,” she says. “Nearly all of my sex-trafficking rings now are migrant girls. The ads exploded within the first three months of the border being open. We started noticing new sites and ads in Spanish. That was very few before. Then sites dedicated to Latino girls popped up everywhere.” Since the border opened, Lisa added, over 90 percent of the ads are for migrant girls.
“If I wanted to, I could order a girl within 15 minutes,” Lisa says. “It’s that easy.”

If you've got a strong stomach, read the whole thing. It's horrific.

AI In The News

AI Detects Mysterious Detail Hidden in a Famous Raphael Masterpiece

"Using deep feature analysis, we used pictures of authenticated Raphael paintings to train the computer to recognize his style to a very detailed degree, from the brushstrokes, the color palette, the shading and every aspect of the work," mathematician and computer scientist Hassan Ugail from the University of Bradford in the UK explained in December, when the researchers' findings were published.

"The computer sees far more deeply than the human eye, to microscopic level. "

Machine learning processes typically need to be trained on a vast pool of examples, something which isn't always available when it comes to a sole artist's life work. In this case, the team modified pre-trained architecture developed by Microscoft called ResNet50, coupled with a traditional machine learning technique called a Support Vector Machine.

The method has previously been shown to have a 98 percent accuracy level when it comes to identifying Raphael paintings. Usually, it's trained on whole pictures, but here the team also asked it to look at individual faces.

While the Madonna, the Child, and St John all show up as being created from the hand of Raphael, that's not the case of St Joseph. The researchers note that in previous debates over the painting's authenticity, St Joseph's face has been thought to be less well done than the others in the frame.

Fascinating.

How Do You Do, Fellow Football Fans?

Tim Walz Deletes Tweet Where He Badly Fumbles Football Terminology — Gets Roasted By Conservatives

On Sunday afternoon, Walz and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez played the football video game Madden NFL 25 live on Twitch. To promote the stream, both of them had clips posted on their respective social media accounts.

While playing the game against one another, the two discussed a variety of social issues while urging viewers to vote. The two also reacted live to comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s controversial comments at Donald Trump’s rally in Madison Square Garden.
In one now-deleted tweet, however, Walz appeared to badly flub a football term.
“@AOC can run a mean pick 6 — and I can call an audible on a play,” Walz said. “And we both know when you take the time to draw up a playbook, you’re gonna use it.”

This moron would climb a glass wall to see what's on the other side. “Run a pick 6”, good gawd. The Democrats claim he used to coach football too.

Fear Mongering?

Is the Left Preparing for War If Trump Wins?

By vilifying Trump as a despotic madman who must be stopped before he can commence his reign of terror, the regime’s propaganda apparatus not only slanders Trump but also pre-emptively threatens the reputation, as well as the livelihood and perhaps the liberty, of current military personnel. The point is to push the military against Trump: When the time comes to act, will you stand for democracy or side with a tyrant who sees the military only as an instrument to advance his personal interests?

For instance, last week the Atlantic’s editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, quoted former Trump administration officials claiming that the Republican candidate is contemptuous of America’s armed forces and, according to Trump’s former chief of staff, John Kelly, wishes he could command the same respect that Hitler commanded from his general officers.

This is not the first time that Trump has been compared to Hitler or that Kelly, a retired Marine general, turned on his former commander-in-chief. Kelly was the key source for a story published before the 2020 election, also in the Atlantic and also by Jeffrey Goldberg, that alleged Trump had called American WWII soldiers buried in French cemeteries “suckers and losers.”

Well, maybe. But I also note that the author is trying to sell a book, so...

All That Is Necessary For The Triumph Of Evil Is For Good Men To Do Nothing

Getting Past the "That's political-we can't talk about it!" Syndrome

It happens in wards and branches all over the world. A member will begin to talk about some doctrine in The Family: A Proclamation to the World, and a fellow member will shut them down with “Oh, that’s political. We can’t talk about it!”
Each time I hear that, I say, “Well! Hasn’t Satan been effective?! All he had to do was attach the word “political” to that doctrine, and he has effectively silenced the members of Christ’s church!”
In our work with Latter-day Saints for Life, a worldwide organization for Latter-day Saints who support the doctrine of the sanctity of life, we have heard from members who have had these experiences of being told to be quiet across the entire United States and in countries around the world. This seems to be a global issue that affects members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – and often members of other faiths as well.
Want to discuss the sanctity of life? Nope, that’s political.
Want to discuss the doctrine that gender is an essential characteristic of premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose? Not allowed, that’s political.
Want to discuss the doctrine of marriage as ordained of God between a man and a woman? Can’t do that, way too political to talk about.
Even, want to discuss the roles of fathers and mothers? No way, that is a touchy subject.
Tragically, I think Satan takes great delight in silencing the Saints of God with a giant “mute” button.

The article is from a LDS publication, but I see the same thing happening among more traditional denominations.

26 Okay, I think the "sexy" costume thing is getting a bit out of hand, ladies. I will concede that some outfits do lend themselves to the "sexy" theme, such as vampire, which is an archetype that has been characterized as sensual since before Bram Stoker wrote Dracula, cheerleader and even nurse.

But do we really need "sexy" versions of every costume imaginable? There are some outfits, that really don't need to be sexualized, such as "sexy" angel or "sexy" Minnie Mouse. Where in the real world are you ever going to see a "sexy" teddy bear or a "sexy" zombie?

I will say what really made me realize that this trend has gone too far was when I saw that somebody was actually, in total contrast with reality, wearing a costume depicting herself off as a "sexy" hooker.

Assuming he's on track to win in NC, GA, and AZ (and everyone seems agreed that he is), then he can win just one of the Rust Belt states, or lose all of them and win with Nevada, plus either New Hampshire or that one district in Nebraska.

Then again, I was sure 2020 was in the bag, and look how that turned out.

This won't be a popular position, but I'm trying to level out by telling myself Trump probably won't get all that much accomplished as President anyway, so I shouldn't stress about it.

101 >>> 62 I know little about Nevada politics; however, I am mildly optimistic in that I think Trump has more paths to victory than Harris does.

Eight years ago there were a handful of us rightwing whack jobs that said the federal government was corrupt beyond belief and with the help of the media it was twisting the country into a permanent ruling elite without the consent of the people.

Now a significant majority of the country knows it. And now that they know it they can't unknow it. No matter what happens next Tuesday a movement is building in this country that the totalitarian left fears and knows they will never break.

It's not surprising, as early voting hasn't really caught on around here. I'm in western Pennsylvania between Pittsburgh and Erie.

Being in Pennsylvania, I don't trust that any ballot I cast now would survive until Election Day. It'd be less Dominion and more Dumpster.

Urza's block had ridiculously broken combo decks with cards like: Tinker, Yawg Will, Time Spiral, Memory Jar. The idea that Yawg Bargain was somehow uniquely worse to play against is a joke.

Trying to intuit someone's personality based on card use is absolutely retarded as well. The quotes sound like elementary schoolers throwing tantrums cause the other kid cast counterspell and poor Timmy didn't get to play his giant creature.

Indian Nations are so unimportant to the Democrats that they only sent Decrepit Joe to try to suck up them this week, with less than 90 days left in his term of misery for all Americans.

Supposedly Decrepit Joe will soon finally make good on his years-ago promise to visit Africa to show how important Black Africa is to American Foreign Policy. So far he hasn't made good on his years-ago promise to visit New Guinea to show how important it can be in blocking Chinese advances into the SW Pacific Area along US-Australia/NZ shipping routes.

Joe's term is a total foreign policy disaster for the US and its critical allies.

Typical ones, I guess? Nothing that really impressed me, anyway.

A few little girls dressed as unicorns and princesses. Two little boys as dinosaurs. A few animal costumes.

A fair number of Star Wars characters, old--Chewbacca--and new--a young Obi-Wan, a baby Yoda, and a jedi girl (Rey?)

Fewer superheroes than I was expecting. A pink Power Ranger and two Spidermen. Spidermans?

No ninjas. I guess ninjas are old and busted.

Only one group of teenagers who weren't trying. I think one was going for Wednesday Addams? Or maybe they were perfect costumes of characters I'm too old to know about.

As a veteran of all sorts of scans due to a chronic condition, it is more to the point of different scans do different things. For some conditions, PET scans are needed, for others, ultrasound works fine. Sometimes plain ole X-rays and sometimes a cat scan with contrast sometimes or without. Then you have MRI and it's variants such scanning for nerve constriction in soft tissue. Or nuclear medicine tests involving radioactive gunk in your organs to track things like gallbladder ejection fraction. General tests are usually just that aka non specific. Specific tests give more specific answers. Ymmv.

319 Even if you are not claustrophobic, take enough of them and you will be. I advise having a white cloth over the eyes as it prevents you from seeing the very close ceiling like a coffin.

Back in college, I went caving where I had to crawl through tunnels lower than that*. It's not the claustrophobia that bothers me, it is the staying stationary. Worse, they don't give me enough time to catch my breath before they say 'hold it'. Dude! I just exhaled. Laying flat and trying to hold my breath can be difficult.

* There was this one section where you had inches of clearance and while crawling on your back you see nothing but lots of rock. I always thought, as I made that crawl, please God, no hiccups. But it would be quick, like 'going to see the Titanic in a shitty craft' quick.

Posted by: whig at November 01, 2024 12:16 AM (ctrM5)

This. And whole-body scans will miss a lot. Otoh, they will pick up lots of benign spots that will lead to unnecessary follow-ups and more tests and more radiation.

I’ve had several CTs in my relatively short life because they picked up a mass on an x-ray looking for a fracture. Lots of stress. Common story these days. Better safe than sorry if they do find something, but full-body diagnostics are not without risks, and doing them on every adult would be a burden.

325 Whoever wondered how JD could talk for four hours straight with Rogan clearly has not been at my in-laws for Thanksgiving. When after dinner, my sister in law settles in a chair with a pack of cigarettes and begins. The only person who has outlasted her to date is one of my daughters who viewed it as a personal challenge when she was in college, but my daughter also had the advantage of being on west coast time while in the east coast. My sister in law could out talk Rogan anytime. I stand by that.

Love him or hate him, you know who Trump is, and he's real. J.D. is real. The Dems are fake, all of them; just look at masculine, gun-toting, high leg-kicking 'Coach' Tampon Timmy, war veteran. They're becoming more and more exposed as being duplicitous assholes only out for power. IMAO, that's why Trump is winning. Not the only reason, mind you, but it's the reality of him versus the insincere fakeness of Kamala. That 'I just woke up out of drug coma' voice of hers! Grating. The 80 proof, on the high notes, was sort of like the Bhopal Dow Chemical event - lots of chemical flavors. At the same time I was like, this could be most excellent...I am all in on trying the 101. This suggestion is timely because I am going to Tucson tomorrow to see Joe Bonamassa. After the show I am walking over to The Batch, a most excellent Whiskey / Scotch / Bourbon bar before walking to the hotel a couple blocks away.

A couple I like. Colkegan - Distilled in NM and though it is labeled Whiskey it is Scotch. It uses mesquite smoke instead of peat smoke because NM has exactly zero peat bogs. Johnny Walker Green - JW makes lovely Scotches and once you move up to their more premium brands they are pretty great.

The OFFICIAL REFERENCE BOURBON for all Bourbon Comparision, need to be Jim Beam 4 y/o White Label.

Not the BEST bourbon. Not the most "anything" bourbon.

But all references as to sour, strong, caramel, smoke and other characteristics, do need to radiate out on the graph from some central point, and Jim Beam White Label IS that one central point.

EVERYONE knows the taste of Jim Beam. Love it, Hate it, take it or leave it. It IS the center of the Bourbon Flavor matrix though.

So, let's use it henceforth for conversational clarity and comparative accuracy.

388 I recall drinking Goldschlager, which is German peppermint schnapps with bits of gold in it.

Being XY youths, we liked it it because it meant we would shit gold!

Thunderbird was not a "wine".

It resulted in WHINE !!!

And one throwing up one's own rectum and toenails as result of excessive quaffing, thereof.

390 When XH got his rank advancement to E4, his buddies held a "wetting down" party for him. The Rite of Passage at that time/location included Beer Bong with a shot (or 2?) of Ouzo added. Don't know how many he had.

Oh, boy howdy, was he *sick* the next day. LOL!

391 Look, if any cat people are here, can you help me.

Fuck it.

They're geting tuna and hopefully getting to sleep.

I just realised I haven't really eaten like yesterday. Had 5 big beers slowly since I'm taking care of fricking everything.

Tuna.

392 Cats like tuna, Stateless! Well, generally, I guess.. I don't know of any that would walk away from it.

They eat. They bathe. They sleep.

No problemo!

How anyone could choke down enough of Tbird to Go There, is beyond my comprehension.

One sip was enough to tell me: "this is not for human consumption."

397 Happy Halloween all!

Tho it started out slow we had over 50 kids this year. Nice blustery fall evening with leaves blowing. Jules dressed up as a 50's bobbysoxer, like pics of our Moms, and had Alexa the Spy play spooky songs.

I cleaned up the front porch, put our homegrown pumpkins out to add to the decor and we were all set.

Best moments...when I said Happy Halloween to a kid, maybe 10 or 11, he stopped and turned around, said to me...no, Happy Halloween to you. Seriously, he made me laugh, was sincere.

Also had several parents thanking us for what we did, that was a first. We were the only ones on our block w/ lights on and handing out candy.

One Dad was dressed in bibs and some headdress, maybe an Arab farmer? I couldn't figure it out but explained I was dressed as an old man, as I leaned on my cane.

A good time was had by all. Apparently, a dying tradition Jules and I must maintain next year.

399 I was making tuna salad for sammiches the other day. Cat was snoozing in his funny "t!ts up" style-- flat on his back with all 4 feet in the air-- fully conked out about 20ft away.

So, I took a little blob of tuna & blew on it, so the aroma would waft toward Cat.

Couple of seconds later... *Pow!* and Cat was up on his feet & snuffing, then came a-running over to me "meow, meow, meow!"

400 I had Spider-Mans, Screams, A Queen B, a Barbie Cowgirl, and a Toystory Cowgirl, A cheeseburger, Vampires, LILO & Stitches, Purges, Batmen, 1 Captain America, a few dinosaurs, a Cow … all stopping by for their sugar rations.

All seemed happy & friendly, and lots had parents on the sidewalk.

‘Twas fun.

405 Neighbor boys were both pirates. Plastic swords, eye patches & all.

Their mom was a bat-- she had the coolest (purple sparkly!) batwings attached to her sweater's back & sleeves, so the wings unfurled when she reached out.

The boys liked the Skittles and toy glider kits.

408 Greetings Hordlings. All quiet on the Singapore front. Watched, with a mighty bit of amusement I might add, Trump in his MAGA garbage truck. Heh. We might just be witnessing the greatest retail politician of our generation. It is also great to see him expanding the map on the EC and going for it on the national "popular vote" front as well. The Harris Waltz campaign seems paralyzed and completely on the back foot. Pulling advertising out of NC was a bit tell, IMO. She, of course remains completely unlikeable, is lazy and is a borderline retard (most definitely a DEI box check politician) and it shows. I remain cautiously optimistic - but, as usual, Winston Wolf rules continue to apply.

On Bourbon - I actually am fine with Makers Mark 80 or the higher proof as my "mixing bourbon" - I like the taste at the price point and I think it makes a very decent Manhattan. I agree with whomever noted that Woodford Reserve is a very decent not-quite-top-shelf ("middle shelf"?) bourbon and that it is a perfect sipping bourbon. I also especially like the Bulleit bourbon and rye. Blanton's is also very good.

409 Never tried to drink bong water, but I'll bet it isn't as nasty as Suprep.

When doing colonoscopy prep last time, that's what Dr. gave me. (The time before, was way different)

Directions were to take sips of the vile liquid, finishing the whole bottle over 15 minutes, iirc. With each sip, my gag reflex would kick in.

Have you ever tried to swallow, while your body was forcing you to puke at the same time? Well... anyhow, I managed to finish that first bottle. Sat for a while & then it all came back up.

Called ER in a panic, as it was too late at night to call Dr. to cancel... They said to stop by & pick up an "alternative kit" that they kept in stock.

Yay! Saved the day!

410 Morning, insomaniacals. So we have survived another Big Night in Demon-Land?

Nothing in particular happened here last night. We pulled up the original 1978 Halloween on one of the free streaming channels. I hadn't seen it since the early Eighties, and then on a black-and-white TV, so it was an odd experience. It's still very effective, no subplots, everything is about the escape and rampage of Michael Myers, and the repeated musical theme is almost a character in the story itself. And then there are cool cars like the red Chevy Monte Carlo that the sheriff's daughter drives and the BMW coupe the doctor has.

412 One for you to try-take a Brandy snifter-a big one and fill it with crushed ice, then as much gin (Gordon's is good here) as will fit. That should be your drink for the evening.
