You May Not Be Interested In The ONT, But The ONT Is Interested In You

Howdy Horde! Welcome to Thursday's ONT! Gonna be a short one, had a Chamber of Commerse meeting tonight, and they held it in Flint, whih is almost an hour away. Why on earth would you hold a meeting for the Tyler CoC in Flint? Anyhow, travel time has me behind the 8 ball.

Squish Republicans

To Hogan or not to Hogan, that is the question for Trump supporters

I will be leaving the Senate race blank on my ballot because Hogan will be far more problematic than his opponent over the next four years of the Trump presidency. Hogan will spend his time chasing Washington Post headlines as the independent senator who has the guts to stand up to Trump, looking for opportunities to block the Trump agenda.

As an ostensibly Republican senator, his continued opposition to Trump nominees and policies will be exaggerated and as someone who sees himself as a GOP or No Labels nominee for president in 2028, Hogan will spend the entire Trump administration working with Chuck Schumer to subvert President Trump’s presidency and promote himself.

I also will not vote for Hogan’s Democrat opponent, because unlike the former congresswoman from northern Virginia who has embraced Harris, I won’t vote for someone whose entire belief system is antithetical to mine and a profound danger to individual liberty in America.

A Hogan type Republican (squish) is the best you're going to be able to get for a statewide office in Md. Andy Harris is pretty strong, but he's in the one district, 1, that the Dems concede to the Republicans. You might be able to flip 6, Dan Bongino came real close a while back, but they've stuck enough of Montgomery County (suburban DC) into 6 that it's really hard. The state is gerrymandered to hell and gone. (Maryland looks like a gun. 1 is the grips and firing chamber, 6 is the barrel).

Ronald Reagan famously said “The person who agrees with you 80 percent of the time is a friend and an ally - not a 20 percent traitor.” Now, I don't think that Hogan gets to 80%. He maybe tops out at 70, but I'm not sure if his anti-Trump rhetoric is what he has to say to get elected in a blue state, or if he truly does have a personal antipathy for the man. If it's the later he may not get to 70 %.

So, tonight's question: Would you vote for Hogan if you lived in Md? I don't have to worry about it down here in Texas, I am voting for Ted Cruz. Texas rocks!

* Little voice whispers “John Cornyn” *

When Did Google Search Become Totally Useless?

Similarly, you might find yourself hungry while on the road, so someone in the car Googles “restaurants near me.” There was a time when this feature was useful. Now, the restaurants are paying to play and the resulting results are ridiculously skewed. While I’m not going to dox myself here with screenshots of the results I get when I Google “restaurants near me” while sitting in my house, suffice it to say that the top results aren’t necessarily the closest, or even highest-rated, eateries. Some that I know are there — because I live in this area! — aren’t even listed.

Granted, these aren’t extremely pressing issues. People researched oil paints and found places to eat for decades upon decades without the assistance of the internet. What is a bigger deal is how nakedly partisan Google has become. Former President Trump has even complained about it, taking time to call CEO Sundar Pichai to point out the problem.

He then goes on to talk about the blatant political bias. Frankly, I've noticed most search engines are pretty useless. Someone suggested Yandex, but a Russian search engine? I dunno. Do any of y'all know of a search engine that doesn't return ridiculously skewed results?

Mere Christianity

Staying Out Of Politics Is Not The Moral High Ground Some Christians Think It Is

The rise of the “seeker-friendly” church model has also led an increasing number of churches across America to avoid politically controversial teachings in order to appeal to as many people as possible.

When it comes to Mark 12:17, though, the context matters. When Jesus says “give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar,” he is referring to tax policy. Similarly, 15 years ago, the most pressing political issue of the time according to voters was the economy.

Today our political debates are no longer just about taxes; they’re about the definition of marriage, gender ideology, and the humanity of an unborn child. These are not questions of policy, they are questions of theology.

A study by the Barna Group revealed that while 90 percent of pastors believe that the Bible speaks to issues like sexuality, marriage, and abortion, 50 percent of them are hesitant to speak out on these issues for fear of creating division along political lines.

The scope of the political conversation is shifting to include theological questions, but now that these theological questions also have political implications, the church is going silent. The political umbrella is expanding into theological territory, and we are being manipulated into giving to Caesar what belongs to God.

I think he makes a good point, and I'm not even talking about heretical churches where the pastor wears rainbow vestments or speaks proudly from the pulpit about her abortions. IF the bible is true, and human life is sacred, than abortion is definite a subject that churches should be involved in. And many are. But many also want to avoid the subject for fear of “offending” someone. Well, I would remind them that Jesus went to the temple with a whip in his pocket. I bet the money changers were quite offended at his actions.

17 Any car enthusiasts here?

I once thought I'd like a VW Golf GTI, but when the Golf R with AWD came out, I wanted one of these instead.

Pocket rocket. Sedate sedan. A scorcher on a twisty canyon road.

They came out with the R a couple years ago and supply is so tight each VW dealer gets maybe two or three a year. All are presold.

I was in a VW store yesterday and one was on the floor, that had arrived NOT presold. It got scooped immediately by a woman paying cash, buying it for her 16 year old grandson.

Lucky boy!

99 The Russians are the Official Enemy.

Speaking of the Official Enemy, a writer for the UK Telegraph today wrote version #13, 972 of "The Russian Economy Is About To Collapse" article.

The new neocon talking point?

The Russian economy is about to collapse because of "crippling labor shortages". You see, between war casualties, people fleeing abroad (overblown), and the expansion of the Russian defense industry, there aren't enough workers to go around.

Citing low unemployment rates as a sign that an economy is about to collapse is certainly a novel argument, but I guess they have to come up with something.

ddg uses Google resources, and is not as good as it used to be.

I use Qwant, it is French. It mostly gives me responses in English, I suppose based on where I am at.

Yandex is not bad, there is one part that is .RU and one part that is based in the US. It will give you responses in Cyrillic though. It was required by the DOJ for some reason.

If you really want to have fun used FrogFind. I am not convinced it is great, but it does look like The Drudge Report used to look
It won't focus on one language, it will give you everything that relates to your search.

If I put Petro, Visit, Cuba in Qwant it gives me English and Spanish links about the President of Colombia visiting Cuba, in Frog Find! it gives similar responses, but not with the English put to the top.

Different investment and protection strategies. Russia/Ukraine won't last forever, so go for short term profit. If, however, the Israelis start actually putting terrorist organizations out of business, that puts a real damper on long-term markets for war supplies. Better to forgo short-term profits there in exchange for preservation of more long-term investments.

166 99 The Russians are the Official Enemy.

273 You will never solve the cyber security issue by better internet security. For every hole you fix someone will find two more.

Think of your house. You have a door with a lock and maybe you have a security alarm. But few houses can withstand even a moderate desire of someone outside who really wants to enter.

But the real reason people aren't breaking down your door is

A) The cops might arrest them
B) You might be on the other side of the door with a gun

For cybercrime there is little fear of arrest and even less of real punishment.

Start hanging hackers, and especially foreign ones, nightly on national TV and that changes.

Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty, it's free at last.

Damned side-by-side Frigidaire Gallery defrost drain line had plugged up. When it does that, it overflows, then freezes up everything, then spills water down the back of the freezer compartment, which pools up, freezes, and eventually runs out the front on the floor.

Been messing with that thing since 8PM. Had to take the cover off the evaporator. I was afraid I was going to have to pull the damn thing out of its little nook, and get under their from the back side and pull that hose out, which is a bitch.

But I got free. Used some H2O2 solution, which bubbled nicely, and finally, with the help of some wire through the hose, broke it loose.

Free flowing at last.

Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh

Ja, "Michael Rockefeller," track one from Guadalcanal Diary's second album, with the killer ending lyrics: He says he didn't know, he didn't mean to/He held his head in his hands. Werner understands the prevailing theories regarding the poor youngster is that he either drowned from being swept out to sea, or was killed (and possibly eaten) by New Guinea tribesmen who, as a tit-for-tat revenge cycle, performed the atrocity in response to the shooting of members of their tribe by Dutch colonial forces. Rockefeller was, sadly, an unconnected member of the larger culture that was the source of their grievance.

In total honesty, though, Werner must confess that he cannot confirm Klaus Kinski's location at the time of the event, and when Kinski went on a bender in a tropic region, the aftermath could be less than pretty.

1. The Russians have been trolling the Ukrainians by flying North Korean flags around the battlefields.
2. On the ground, things have not been developing in Ukraine's favor. Wherever the Russians push, the Ukrainians are forced to give way. This often results in the Ukrainians getting trapped in a "cauldron" and being forced to flee on foot and run a gauntlet of fire.
3. The Ukrainians continue to have a foothold on Russian territory near Kursk. A cynical person might speculate that the Russians are letting them stay there, as a pretext for refusing to even pretend to negotiate a settlement while invaders are on Russian soil.

And these shelves and bins are some of the cheapest crap. It doesn't fit quite right especially when they're at room temperature and the freezer is still cold (ice was starting to melt with the cover off, but it was still fairly cold), tends to bind and catch trying to use it normally even.

379 That SR-71 story, is that the one about speed showoffs?

There is another one where planes are asking for permission to climb to a higher altitude: Several pilots are on with ATC, each asking for a higher altitude as they try to out-do each other. Then an SR-71 comes on, requesting FL900 (that's 90,000 feet). You can hear a few smirks from other pilots as if saying 'Yeah, right!'
Then the controller says "If you can reach it, you can have it". The pilot responds "Roger. Descending FL900".

----
This IS funny: (a B-52 has 8 engines)
An F-111 was flying escort with a B-52 and generally making a nuisance of himself by flying rolls around the lumbering old bomber. The message for the B-52 crew was, "Anything you can do, I can do better."
Not to be outdone, the bomber pilot announced that he would rise to the challenge. The B-52, however, continued its flight, straight and level. Perplexed, the fighter pilot asked, "I'm waiting, what are you going to do?"
"We just shut down two engines."

Got 25 mpg if you didn't pound it too much. Most amazing thing to me was the lack of torque steer and the way it would pull from idle. Felt more like a V8. Downside? Weird VW engineering and once it got to around 90k it made me very nervous from expecting a very expensive problem. VW is priced like a Toyota but parts and service are priced like a Benz. And notice that since the original Bug, you don't really see very many older VWs running around where you do see LOTS of old Toyotas.

391 All you need to know about Hogan:

He was term limited.

In 2022, the Republican primary for Maryland governor was between Dan Cox and Kelly Schulz. Kelly was Hogan's hand-picked successor. Dan was one of Trump's picks.

Dan Cox won the Republican primary.

Hogan REFUSED to endorse Cox in the general election. I don't think he even lifted a finger to assist. Not Cox, nor any other candidate.

Hogan is worse than a Democrat. He'd be yet another vote for Impeachment Forever And Ever, with the same breathless JOY! that the media ran with when Liz Cheney did the same.

Maryland is basically a 12-year-old student in the hands of an green-haired, pincushioned-faced, ex-man teacher. One who has been shipped around from other districts because of what happened to the other 12-year-olds. It's F***'ed. Either candidate is going to screw the state; it's just a question of who is going to screw the GOP even more.

Larry Hogan is the one putting out anti-Trump ads. Even while his opponent has ads trying to tie him to Trump despite being the Anti-Trump.

The only hope is that Also-Ran has more tax-scam skeletons in her closet, and gets booted from the Senate like Santos was.

399 But I got free. Used some H2O2 solution, which bubbled nicely, and finally, with the help of some wire through the hose, broke it loose.

Free flowing at last.

406 Some idiot posted a picture of "Yasuki" the "black Samuri" on LinkedIn today. Story says he arrived in Japan in the 16th century. Now, I'm not all that great with history but I'm pretty sure that photographs were not a thing in 16th or 17th century Japan.
Posted by: Blanco Basura - Z28.310 at October 25, 2024 12:07 AM (lUFok)

Yasuke. Has a very questionable and contested history. Pretty much only a news item right now to serve as marketing for Ubisoft, who decided to make him the protagonist of their newest AC game set in Japan. Which sparked a lot of controversy by bucking a trend of using protagonists of native ethnicity to the setting. Which Ubisoft predictably responded to by calling their critics racist.

GOP EV lead in Arizona is now 71,634.

This is largely not canibalized election day vote.

Thanks Dave in Fla - those of us in Asia time zone appreciate the update. Also - thank you for your analysis post of the other day. I am cautiously optimistic - but, as always, Winston Wolf rules still apply.

409 Voting is not a moral imperative because politicians are liars. Say I'm a Wisconsin resident and I voted for liz cheney in 2020, because she was pro life and my morals demanded it. That would make me as guilty as her in 2024, when I find out she lied like *checks notes ... every politician ever. That said, Harris is awful and I can't imagine God voting for that harpie

413 Morning, insomaniacals! It's Friday at least, right? There's a new slogan for you: ALIF, At Least It's Friday! Or At Last It's Friday, though I think somebody may have already coined that one.

Anyway: I'm up, I'm sipping coffee, what more d'ya want?

It'll be time to go exercise in a bit. Strange dreams last night too, involving a broken water cooler flooding an entire reception area, a drinking vessel in the shape of a bear cub that seemed to be alive part of the time, and a bomb threat in my work building. Melatonin is a hell of a drug. . . .

422 Mr. Hogan is a dirtbag. However, it’s a binary choice. A voter needs to make decision to vote for the candidate less bad. I’d vote for him if I lived in MD.

I like TRex’s observation that a Hogan helps secure better committee assignments for Republicans.
