The Comments of The Week

The toughest job for Sunday's ONT is picking them out.

Personally I enjoy black bear meat. The ONT Is Always Looking Out For YouTM

If you're going to eat a bear, make sure it's not rare.

You'd be forgiven for thinking that once the beast has been subdued, all danger has passed. But you might still be in for a scare. The animal's flesh can be riddled with encased worm larvae, which, upon being eaten, will gladly reproduce in your innards and let their offspring roam the rest of your person, including invading your brain and heart. To defeat these savage squirmers, all one must do is cook the meat to at least 165° Fahrenheit.

But that simple solution continues to be ignored, according to a report today in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. In this week's issue, health officials in North Carolina report that rare bear meat was served at a November 23 gathering, where at least 22 people ate the meat and at least 10 developed symptoms of a worm infection. Of the 10, six were kids and teens between the ages of 10 and 18.

But I do enjoy medium rare venison steaks.

OCTOBER 11--After pulling over suspects driving a stolen car, Oregon police found a large drug stash inside a bag with “Definitely not a bag full of drugs” printed on it, according to court records.

Early Wednesday morning, a Portland cop ran the plates on a 1994 Ford Taurus that “came back as stolen,” according to a probable cause affidavit. The officer subsequently arrested the driver, Reginald Reynolds, 35, and passenger Mia Baggenstos, 37.

Reynolds, cops say, was carrying a loaded .357 handgun in his pocket, a bag of methamphetamine, and $1360 in cash. Baggenstos had “three white pills she said were oxy...as well as a meth

40 Boy and his dog - always excellent. ❤️

Watching the Wheels - thanks, MH. MiladyJo had gone in to pick up the cake for her brother's wedding, and I was sitting in the car, listening to the radio, when that came on. Just made me so happy that John seemed at last to have found peace, after such a troubled life, could make up for his earlier failure at fatherhood and marriage. We were just starting to have our own family, after a lot of troubles. We could relate. And, he was back after years of having hung up the guitar.

Bought the LP right away, of course. It meant a lot to us. And then, his horrible murder, so undeserved, so evil. We got to grow old together. He & Yoko didn't.

Wish there was some good way to skip all the Lennon-hater comments. Maybe I'll just read the post and go to bed.

Had a fuel supply issue that kept it from running.
Replaced the fuel pump after changing the oil and the transmission fluid.
Fired right up.
Took it for a test drive around the neighborhood and discovered what I forgot to check.
Brake fluid.
The reservoir was bone dry.
Other than that the car ran great and I got rather good at stopping with the e-brake.
Hopefully after I put some fluid in I'll find where the leak is so I can fix it.
Easy stuff.
It just needs TLC after years of neglect.

That's funny because last night I was looking into how to make a "bat signal" for Trump.

It's not that simple and easy, turns out. First of all, you need *something* to reflect the light off, not just the ether like in the TV show. A cloud, or a building, etc.

Secondly, it requires a concave (or convex, I forgot) lens. No big deal, but still. A powerful light, and the "Trump" stencil.

I was black bear hunting for the first time and snuck up on a nice size boar drinking. He was beautiful. His coat was so shiny black that it was blue. He was such a magnificent looking animal that I couldn't kill it. Certainly, not just for the skin and I always wanted a bear skin rug. I slipped away and told my hunting partners that there was bear sign where I had just been.

Ok Tim, I guess now would be a good time to drop my October surprise. You remember him right? The real reason you walked away from teaching? The kid who spent the night at your home? the one you went to the gay bar with? The reason the school board had a meeting about you? What do you think Tim, should I drop that now? Or should I wait another week or so? You know, the student you were having sex with, the male student you were having sex with? They didn't call you Touchdown Timmy because you were the football coach, oh wait, you lied about that also. You were the assistant coach. What do you think Tim? You remember the Indigo Girls concert, right? The gay bar, spending the night and of course the school board meeting. Think it is time Tim? TOUCHDOWN TIMMY. You were Touchy alright.

Again nothing like what they're dealing with up there, but I was impressed with the lineman down here. They got the main line out of town up and going a couple days before they got to me (and the other side taps and spurs). They got here down this road about 11:00 AM Thursday, the 3rd.

A pine in front of my mother's had taken down a single phase extension (3-phase runs down a little ways for my shop) that runs on down the road. I thought two poles were going to have to be replaced.

They re-strung that all the way down to an older subdivision in less than an hour, and spent a few more hours in that subdivision. They had to set at least three new poles along there.

By 3PM, they were ready to energize.

They didn't replace those two poles I though. They just sawed the tops off a bit, and put up new insulators and go 'er done.

Duke runs wider phase to neutral spacing (puts transformers in between -- some others like Laurens electric have the top of the transformers right below the neutral, with neutral closer to phase(s)).

Anyway, that gave them room to play with about sawing off the tops. It looks a little odd, but who cares.

A Duke guy I spoke to said priority was just shoring up what would hold for a while and getting power back on. They'll come back later at leisure and test and evaluate things, and may replace poles at leisure.

I have taken care of cats. Seriously, an insane PTSD inducing amount of cats and kittens. But having them in the house is an adjustment. The dog Ralphy has been amazing. No drama at all.

It's been a miserable, dreary, wet, dark day in my area. It was so bad, the cats actually came to stay in the house today. I trust Trumpy a lot. He was riled up during the day but settled in, stayed a bit and headed out.

Snowflake came in, and being a mother of 3, took a well deserved rest in the afternoon for almost 2 hours. She's newer here so I stayed with her the entire time.

Miserable night. Both are here now. Snowflake loves cat tv with the birds. Trumpy's resting on my chair. Both happy and feeling safe.

I was hoping to get to a horror movie tonight but 2 new outdoor cats. And Trumpy's on my chair.

They are actually really good. Don't actively claw crap to destroy things. I'm going to have to learn cat training tips. Beautiful cats. My friends are going on a long vacation in the new year and I couldn't stand to see them elsewher

329 from what I could tell the DNA was based on the mDNA and linked to a known son of Columbus, The Mitochondrial link is from the mother only, and does not really touch on the father.
There was a claim that Columbus was from the Balearics, and his father was from an aristocratic line, and he took a Genoese name to hide his converso background, and his illegitimacy. This is linked to the fact that everything he wrote was in Spanish, including letters sent to his Genoese bank.

The conversos were overrepresented among the Spanish aristocracy. The great families, often in hock up to their gills, married into wealthy converso families. This caused a lot of dyspepsia for the aristocracy when the Inquisition got busy.

Read about the Raptor engines. They are damned impressive. The first full-flow staged combustion every flown. And successfully.

It blows my mind, but you've got to two turbopumps, a fuel and oxidizer. Fuel is powered by a fuel rich preburner, and LOX by a O2 rich preburner. That is impressive.

The fuel and LOX are completely "gassified" to be fed into the main combustion chamber. The pressures and flow rates are ridiculous.

This makes for high efficiency, but is damned hard to do. Elon pulled that off.

IIRC he was funded fully by the crown. The Portuguese crown declined to fund him because they had a better idea of the diameter of the Earth, and they were better sailors than any Spaniard. It was a blue sky project that he could get to the Indies by going west. He was using bodged numbers on the diameter of the Earth based on Marco Polo, not on Erastothenes' calculations. Columbus may have had information that the Portuguese had hit Brazil on the way to the Cape of Good Hope by accident, but he never said. The Portuguese may have considered that what they found was just an island, and they had the Spice Island trades sewn up and didn't need to search for new lands.

And until fairly recently in geologic time, they were not. One of the more interesting things is the discovery at the earliest levels of occupation on Easter Island is traces of Sweet Potato and Canna lilly, both of which are South American crops. This indicates the Polynesians who settled Eastern Island made it to South America and got back
Recently there were reports that the earliest settlers in New Zealand planted sweet potatoes too, which means that not only did the Polynesians make it to South America and back to Eastern Island, but they made it back to the main areas of Polynesian settlement too.

The purpose of that chopstick catch is rapid turn-around. To get to the Moon (a modified Starship is what NASA chose for the moon lander for the Artemis mission), and where he really wants to go, Mars he's going to do Earth-orbit rendezvous (as a little kid, reading this stuff, I used to pronounce that "ren-dez-vus") on steroids.

Launch a starship or two. Then, turn around rapidly and launch fuel starship tankers to fuel up the outbound starships with enough fuel to get to the Moon and Mars. It will take about 5 (maybe 10) fuel tanker launches.

very few, the policy was that only "Spaniards" were eligible. Even Catalans were discouraged. The new world was to be "Spanish"
this is one of the reasons that children born in the new world, even to Spanish parents, were considered "criollos" and not eligible for high positions in the colonial government, though they could hold high positions in the bureaucracy and Army - this policy changed in the centuries, but under the Bourbon restoration it was strictly enforced, and this led to some of the older families to join the rebellions.

The first Jewish synagogue in the US was established in Newport, Rhode Island in 1797. Still there. Rhode Island was also founded by a Baptist minister and is the home of the first Baptist church in America in the 1600 before Alabamans started dating their sisters.

We also house Cthulhu.

I know.

405 Hey, it's Canadian Thanksgiving!
Have a good one to those Canucks here celebrating...

I'm not a holiday person. And my mother is American so US Thanksgiving used to be the big day.

My friend messaged me a pic yesterday of their weekend Thanksgiving time with his family.

Honest to God, I texted him back asking "It's Thanksgiving!" I really didn't know.

I'm not a holiday person.

1:30 am.
My friends, 2 outdoor cats, are sleeping comfortably here in the living room. 2 cats...first time ever. The dog is quiet with my mother, whom I take care, after an exciting night where with all the excitement, he was getting extra treats.

I'm in the front room where the cats are sleeping, Most of a big beer left. Kind of surreal.

408 Random late night engineering question: can you use the mechanism from a grandfather clock or something similar to power an LED? In other words is there some way to hang a weight, five, ten, twenty pounds, whatever is reasonable, and hang it six feet high. Then gear the crap out of it to turn a crank that lights an LED? basically looking for candle/oil lamp replacement potential.

You can transfer the energy, but is it enough energy?

Turkey as I recall.

I can't remember the last time my family celebrated.

I think we got together and ordered pizza.

It's funny. I taught in South Korea and Cheusok - spelling - is a major, big holiday. Foreign teachers got a very nice gift box.

Maybe AOP has better insight.

414 The stark difference between how the State of Florida and the federal government handled the last two hurricanes makes it clear how incompetent, degraded and corrupt the federal government has become over the last years. The lessons from these two life changing disasters are directly applicable to every part of the federal government; without a doubt The singular conclusion is the federal government serves itself, the politics of the Democrat party, and the big left-wing money that funds everything. I am becoming more pessimistic with each passing year that any of this is salvageable and thusly allowing us to return to something that resembles a national government for the people by the people. President Trump, if he manages to regain the executive branch has probably 2 years to affect some changes, possibly four If the midterm elections keep Republicans in power. This is assuming that the Left doesn't come after him like they did during his first term and the bureaucratic insiders that fought him every inch of the way are kept in check. Neither of those propositions are likely at all. We have perilous times ahead.

Have you used some of those cheap hand crank emergency lights and radios. Lots of pretty aggresive cranking involved. I would think you'd need to get some significant rpms going. There may not be much resistance if you made a tiny alternator type thing.

417 I don't know what to do with the cats.

Perfectly happy, comfortably sleeping on chairs in the front room. It's a dreary, wet night outside. I put them out for a while and gave them the option to come inside.

Both did easily.

Neither are destructive. But this isn't their home, despite the pictures I could send of adorable cats sleeping on chairs. But it will be in the New Year.

I don't want to kick them out in the night. They are very happy here. If they don't decide to leave soon, I may just try to sleep on the floor by them.

I have a big dog bed from MyPillow guy.
Sadly, may be for me.

Snowflake just moved a bit and back to her chair.

Trumpy rubs against Ralphy, our old dog. One time their tails intertwined. Adorable.

I'm going to move food, water, cat litter here and sleep here I guess. The cats are so rrestful.

I sold inside living well.

Their mother and aunt chose to be outside cats. Snowflake and Trumpy didn't have a choice until now.

437 Odd dream that verged on nightmare. I was driving, possibly an old Buick, along a busy highway and pulled into a shopping center. One store looked like a Hallmark place, but its logo, in white on bright blue, read "Permaville, U.S.A." I parked there in some shade, and started to get out. But for some reason the shifter was in neutral. And the brake pedal was not in a sane place, but way over to the left near the interior kick panel. I could not get my right foot out from behind the pedal -- and the car was starting gently to roll backwards. I struggled and struggled to get my right foot free from my left and out from behind the pedal so I could stamp it. At last I managed it, hit the brake -- and woke up.

Coulda been worse, I guess.

They're good company. Back in early '22, after Chekov D. Siberian passed, I had no cat at all for three months. It was nice, I admit, not to have to buy feline food or fuss with the litter box . . . but it was *dull*. 450 Hah. That p diddy quote in the parody ad about violence being an option triggered me. Some black mom and her van with 3 girls attempted to back into me at the Cincinnati Great Wolf Lodge parking lot over a parking space. I standing there waiting for my husband to park our vehicle so we could unload. There were plenty of spots not far, I just was tired and didn't want to walk anymore. I had to bang on the back of her van and even then she didn't stop. I had to jump out of the way. She was not in the least bit sad when I confronted her. Her daughters got out and were like, you fine, you moved. You better believe I stood there and rubbed their noses in it until they slinked away.

The things they're swallowing about white people are dangerous. Oh, and it was on Juneteenth this happened, which made it worse/better? Idk. I don't have problems with black people myself. But this is irresponsible stuff they're saying.
