Today, Commander Gray took the helm of the RNZN’s dive, hydrographic and salvage vessel HMNZS Manawanui, based at Devonport Naval Base in Auckland. Manawanui is Māori for ‘steadfast’ or ‘big heart’.
It is her first ship command in a naval career that started in the United Kingdom in 1993 as a warfare officer. Her service as a warfare officer ranged from working on aircraft carriers to frigates and mine hunters.
In 2012, Commander Gray and her wife Sharon moved to New Zealand after falling in love with the country during a campervan holiday.
“The most obvious thing to do was join the Royal New Zealand Navy,” she said.
Two days ago, Commander Gray's ship hit a reef off Samoa and sank.
It was the first New Zealand navy ship to sink since 1943.
If you suspect that Commander Gray was a diversity hire, please report to the nearest reeducation camp, Comrade.

My night cat Trumpy is resting comfortably on the foot of the bed while I get back to 1980's "Cannibal Holocaust." The "best Amazonian guide there is if you can get along with him," grabbed a guy's shotgun, twirled it in mid air, pointed the barrel towards his face and looked down the barrel. But back to the movie.
Trumpy arrived at 6:50 today. I put him outside about 8pm, dude stayed on the porch, looked around a bit and came back inside. Day 6. The experiment is going well.
Everyone have a great week. Hopefully the rest of the movie will emotionally scar me for life...

Not very surprising but leftists was over 70%, conservatives, which is probably a misleading term for those who aren't leftists, was in the low 20s. I'm a dog person who has taken care of my neighbour's outdoor cats. And so many kittens. Thank God all the females are being fixed.
The cats are doing a hard sell. Yesterday after I went over to check on them and collect the bowls from Saturday tuna fish surprise, 4 of them were following me back home across the street. A van was coming and I actually stood in the road and moved the cats out of the way.
It's pretty freaky to have several cats race out of bushes to greet you and ask where their food is. But they also come by to say hi. Starry has stayed around the garage for 30 minutes while I've done grip work.
And I'll be taking care of Trumpy in the New Year. Dude's been coming over at dusk, says hi to the dog, makes himself at home, watches some tv and sleeps at the foot of the bed.
Cats. Yeah. I'm getting it.

Our usual handler was showing elsewhere so we got a substitute, a good person we've used before.
But someone has it out for her and brought charges. But filing charges is like jumping out of an airplane. You can't just climb back in. The process has to grind on. When I saw what the basis was I couldn't believe my eyes. Someone's in trouble and it's not our handler.
Her Majesty was accused of setting her up, which is outrageous. HM is a keen competitor but you won't find a squarer person in the sport.

I like battery powered LED lights, don't misunderstand the current draw is low, and they have good color balance. The old school gasoline lanterns, with the mantles that get tied on, Coleman type - they fell out of favor in Boy Scouts and have been replaced at best by propane, as there is a bit of a hair-shirt element to lighting and maintaining them.
But there's one thing a battery operated LED lantern can't do, and that's heat up a room pretty nicely. The lanterns are like anything else, combustion requires ventilation. But they are very efficient, well designed devices and emit almost zero carbon monoxide and other byproducts. In short, what they are is a kind of heater. And being October, that can be a factor for someone in an emergency. They will also run perfectly fine on automobile gasoline. It is true the stove or lantern "generator" will eventually become restricted due to gum and varnish, but they can be cleaned and re-used on most models.
And it doesn't happen overnight. One enthusiast on the Coleman collector website estimates 10 to 12 gallons.

She was reprimanded by the Event Committee, fined $100 and was told she couldn't show for the rest of the weekend. This last bit was because of something too convoluted to explain concisely.
A notice of this decision will eventually be published in the AKC Gazette. It's never good for your reputation if you're thus named, especially if you're a professional. So now our substitute handler is breathing fire, talking about bringing in her lawyer, etc. Gonna be lots of broken crockery.

Well he had a running Coleman lantern under the bucket, a few holes for air intake and flow. The heat would rise, warm the bucket and his third point of contact, and more heat wafting through his coat.
I noticed they will heat a small camper or trailer pretty nicely. Again - ventilation is important, but a well running lantern emits no fumes nor measurable (at dangerous levels to humans or animals) CO or other nasties. If they did - they would have been banned years ago. They also have Catalytic heaters, these are excellent for heating small spaces. They work fine on automobile gasoline as well, leaded fuel having been banned 40 years ago.
These are common at yard sales. Oftentimes inexpensive. 2 burner suitcase stove, lantern and mantles, and catalytic heaters. These would go a long way to providing utility and comfort.

The suitcase stoves burn waay hotter than propane stoves. There's a lot more heat value on long-chain hydrocarbons vs short ones. My father used to cast lead fishing sinkers, melting the lead in an iron pot on a Coleman stove.

I actually never owned a 2 burner Coleman till late in life. I remembered them on Scouting trips and camp outs. It would be cold as hell, and some poor bastard would be up first and start banging around and pumping up the stove, lighting it, and getting coffee or tea going. Great memories.
Ernie Pyle wrote about the earliest 1 burner gasoline stove by Coleman, the 530 that was issued to the troops . They were really well loved by infantry squads. This was also called the "Pocket Stove" in the post war version. They must have had big pockets in those days. The 10th mountain troops needed something lighter, and so the M1942 model was born, with folding legs, and was made entirely of stainless steel. These are quite good stoves, if a bit noisy due to the plate burning design.
I bought an early Peak 1 400A, the brown tank version. These worked great, and could torch snowbanks into drinking water.

Yeah. The clearcoat has failed, and the white paint is peeling in the stamped grooves. I shot some air at it, and a bunch more paint chips flew off. The hood will be a repaint project all on its own. The little patches I did today on the roof are above eye level, and as long as the color matches, don't draw attention. Whole truck really needs a repaint, but is it worth it? Better I just doctor it up here and there. Probably a result of GM's dicking around with water-borne paints, a true fiasco.

A cat's fur color is on the X chromosome. In a normal XX female, one "X" gets deactivated, but not always the same one in different cells, so a calico or tortoiseshell has a patchwork of two different coat colors.
Normal males are XY, so they only have one "coat color" and can't be any of the patchwork patterns.
For a male to be calico or torti, it has to be a genetic abnormality with 3 sex chromosomes: XXY.

Anyhoo, I pared all that stuff away. Sitting on a shelf doesn't do anything any good. The Svea is a great stove - arguably one of the best ever all things considered. But they don't lend themselves to a quick spot of tea or a warmup, at least not compared to butane and the small propane stoves. Even the burner attachment to a Bernzo-matic canister is easy-peasy.
If you actually want to use a Svea 123 you want the actual 123, in later versions they incorporated an ingenious self-cleaning pricker device for the main jet orifice, but the precise flame adjustability of the design was sacrificed completely. They are pretty much either "on" or "off" with not much in between. Amazingly they are still in production, since 1952, although now made gollly knows where, instead of Sweden.

American Gas Machine works in Minnesota made a "coil burner" stove about 1890 that looks like a backpacker stove meets SteamPunk from back to the future.
The Swedes were really big on brass kerosene stoves, made gazillions of them, and exported around the world. Primus, Svea, Optimus. Monitor by the Brits, and a few others.

The rubber diaphragm on the roof has been pierced, and water has gotten in a couple of places, rotting out the roof around a skylight and the fridge vent. I got some patching onto it and then the sealing paint, so it should be OK this winter. Next summer I may have to peel it all back and fix the roof properly. Then again maybe I should just patch it again.
