That's the assessment by a professor at UConn, as reported in the Colgate campus newspaper following a speech there. How does racism make hurricanes happen? It doesn't of course - not even an American college professor is willing to go quite that far yet - but it's racism that makes them matter. You see, without racism, these disasters wouldn't matter nearly so much. His asinine nonsense is about Hurricane Katrina more than anything, but it could apply to any disaster you wish - which is perhaps fitting, seeing as this article was published the day that Helene was destroying Asheville:
He explained that viewing Katrina solely through its immediate aftermath ignores the deeper structural factors that left New Orleans so vulnerable. Horowitz highlighted the impact of state policies and environmental changes in creating conditions for disaster to strike, long before Hurricane Katrina hit the city. He described how the industrial canal flood wall, near the Lower Ninth Ward, was a product of longterm policies that enabled the development of flood-prone areas. "The levees broke in 2005, but the turning point was 1915," Horowitz said.That's a take. It's not a sensible take, but it's a take. The fallibility of construction means that we shouldn't build. Poor people - largely black, in the case of New Orleans - living in marginal areas are at risk, so we should never develop marginal areas. If it hadn't been for the development, the disaster wouldn't have mattered. It wouldn't have been a disaster. Of course, there would also not be a major city there, or any of the economic and social opportunity that tends to be available in major cities. The people who live there would have to live somewhere else, and the poor folks who no longer live in the non-existent New Orleans would live in some other marginal place. It would still be racist, of course. It's incredibly stupid, but at least this guy is out there teaching students:

Katrina and its aftermath were many things. It was a natural disaster. It was an economic disaster. It was a competence crisis. It was an engineering failure. It was an emergency management failure. Any one of those could be fruitfully discussed and debated in a serious, thoughtful, meaningful manner. Too bad any of those wouldn't enable the use the of the hammer. American academia, corporations, government, media, entertainment, etc. have three megahammers: race, sex and climate change. Everything is a nail to be smashed by one of those hammers. It doesn't matter if it makes sense. Just ignore reality and merrily swing your hammer.

The ninth ward flooded from the east. I recall the video of water flowing over that levee, but it was flowing OUT of the neighborhood, into the canal. Because the massive storm surge had flooded over the top and through the levees to the east.
Another point I recall was efforts to maintain/improve that levee (pre-Katrina) were halted because the locals complained about the noise from driving the piers.
at least that is how I remember it.

I seem to recall two levee breaches, one around Kentucky Street on the edge of Gentilly (which lies roughly north of the Ninth Ward), and one at the 17th Street Canal, which forms part of the border of the city with the parish to the west, Jefferson. The entire area between them, except for certain high areas like the French Quarter, flooded like water filling a bowl (which the city is -- a toilet bowl).
And I'm not surprised at all that the natives would object to noise caused by improvements.

I think part of it is how Babbel is teaching it. It feels like something that needs to be learned more by rote than Babbel functions. Just repetition. Babbel does it over time, lots of reviews of vocab and grammer over days and weeks, but the initial lessons end up feeling too light when it comes to a more foreign concept like articles changing by circumstance.
Maybe I'll pick it up in time, but I'm not spending too much brain power on it.
The focus is Italian.

iirc, the ninth ward is bordered by the lake, and that big levee. I lived in the ninth ward a few blocks from the levee for about a year, saw the house I rented on the news, flooded by Katrina.
The levee breaks in NOLA were a little later, at least two, I think maybe more. That flooded a lot of NOLA except a few high spots, but it happened slowly. The ninth ward and points to the East got the massive wall of water.
Early reporting was just on NOLA proper, because NOLA East was wiped out and dark. No reporters there, just people going in their fishing boats to rescue people off house roofs. That is where most deaths occurred, there and Mississippi.

An older student probably is better, on average, than a younger student. He's there because he wants to be and probably has a goal in mind, and he's also likely to be spending his own money. It's a small, self-selected group that is probably several degrees more serious.

As recovering business owner who bought cases of tp every month I know exactly what happened. People stayed home and had to buy a lot more tp. The cases of tp in warehouses stayed in warehouses, because how many homeowners buy it by the case? It took awhile to balance out.

See: my depression era grandparents. They had a giant garden every year, and had hundreds of Mason jars filled with preserved food they never ate before they passed. (So sad!) and had large stores of goods in case things ever went bad. (Their cold pantry also doubled as a bomb shelter, because it was the 50s/60s. They had lead to roll on the walls to cover them and everything.)

The universities don't help with this one iota. They *want* as many "super seniors" as they can get. A ton of universities make it hard to schedule appropriately to graduate in four years. You have to be damned careful to take things when they're available if you want to accomplish it. There are also some odd corner cases that the universities themselves don't understand well, which can result in delays or reduced achievement on the proper schedule because they blindside the student.
It shouldn't be as hard as it is, but universities love that extra semester or year of fees and they don't go out of their way to help a student graduate on schedule.

Try Albanian. It's got its own unique branch on the language tree. Some similarities and borrowed words from other European languages (and Turkish), but plenty of its own unique stuff.
Plus, the Balkans are super cheap to visit...and plenty of service workers in Western Europe are Albanian, so it comes in more handy than you'd think!

We're trying to fix that to some degree. Some courses are only offered every other year, which causes a lot of problems. The solution is to create canned, asynchronous online courses that can be offered every semester and facilitated by multiple faculty within the department, rather than just one person who knows the material.

Just providing a sample schedule with time-constrained courses highlighted would go a long way. I asked for that from my school, and was told they didn't have such a thing and wouldn't produce it.
Scheduling each semester took me a *long* time. The irregular courses could be identified by going through prior course catalogues. Those irregular courses were also consistently offered in the early slot at 08:00, every other time.
People who scheduled for convenience and didn't like those early classes - common at sophomore and above, where there is a choice to be had - will usually skip those and say, "I'll catch the next one." Then they're in the fifth year, shelling out 5-6 *more* figures of cash to pay for it.

We're not know for athletics, so that's seldom an issue. Instead, most of our students do a co-op with an engineering company, which gives them great experience, but they can't do all of their coursework at the same time to graduate in four years. Many of them do take online classes during their co-op job, but not a full load.

15 years ago, and I never formally studied the language. I picked up enough to survive, but even then, my Italian was terrible.
I remember walking along a road, someone stopping me to ask for directions in Italian. I tried my best, and he walked away, saying "Thank you" in English. He spoke English perfectly well and realized that my Italian was just not going to be helpful, so he walked off, essentially. Or, maybe he got enough from me about where the Coliseum was. I wasn't in his head.

I think that it must be awfully exhausting to those that use race, sex and climate change as hammers as they have made their own lives so small and negative. true story, my word as a chronda.
back in '75 or so, we were stationed in italy (camp darby, near livorno). we flew into rome and the fellow that was supposed to meet us didn't show up, so we wound up piling in a taxi and heading north. as we were driving through rome, i noticed all these prominent blue signs with arrows saying "una via". i eventually got curious and asked dad about this "una via" place, as it must be really exciting to have some many signs telling you how to get there.

My husband's experience in European ports as US military was that there are a lot of Europeans that despise us. No matter how nice he was, they were rude. Which is why wimpy Americans used to see the Canada flag in their backpacks do they'd be judged less. I don't know if that's still a thing.
I do remember feeling super proud when I was in NYC and people mistook me for a New Yorker! It was often Europeans looking for something like Olive Garden in Times Square. Still, it was cool.

I moved from NO East to Lake Vista, north of city park. There is about six blocks between RE Lee Blvd and the lake that are about six feet above sea level, because all that was formed by dredging up dirt from the lake. Those in Lakeview south of RE Lee got flooded with 6-8' of water. Several friends rebuilt their homes there, got a lot of that "free money".
There is also some Gentilly Ridge, south of City Park that was above the flood, iirc.

Fen, the sense I got was she was trying to imply she's such good cook, that at big family meals like thanksgiving, there was such demand for her amazing collard greens, she had to cook them or prep them in the bathtub to keep up with the high, high volume of demand. Like instead of making one batch she had to make ten, or there wouldn't be enough.
She's trying to appeal to foodies or southern black women. Instead, it makes people think of stuff like when Kramer made a whole meal in his tub, or the king of queens ep where they stay at the weird bed and breakfast and the owners thawed the turkey they ate in the bathtub. It's just cringe.

"Reverse racism" is a deplorable concept on its face, and a subtle - and hugely powerful - linguistic trick.
It implies - in accordance with postmodernist/critical theory - that racism in its natural state is white-on-non-white. The most they will concede about the opposite direction is that it could be "reverse racism" - the inversion of the norm, the deviation from the natural. Most of the time, even this term is avoided because the opposite direction is simply *not* racism at all.
Remember, racism isn't bigotry or racial hatred - racism is bigotry or racial hatred plus "power." "Reverse racism" is a poor construction because it is definitionally impossible, which is why those truly in the know won't use the term and instead argue that it isn't racism at all.
But the "reverse racism" construction is situationally useful for the hoi polloi, and the linguistic trick is valuable. "It's natural that evil whites hate non-whites, it's an aberration for non-whites to engage in racial hatred." It's a stupendous psychological achievement. It's also evil.

A staggering number of people don't understand that a real power outage - a severe one, that knocks out a whole territory - is also a water outage. The electrical system can be severed from the water system, but the opposite is *not* true. Many water systems can get by for a bit thanks to water towers which act as a small buffer and maintain pressure (the real purpose of them), but that is seriously time-limited.
No power means no water.

He clearly has no idea how modern wells work. The bucket-and-rope-and-winch combo will work for a hand-dug well tapping ground water or a near-surface spring. Those wells almost do not exist anymore. They're drilled deep and cased. Even if you can pull the wellhead off to access the bore directly, your bucket isn't going to fit.
And you'll need 200' of line at least.
And you probably won't be able to submerge it due to pressure and lack of leverage.

Which is why I purchased a portable solar panel, 2k storage battery, and have already configured jumper cables to power up my well pump. Fortunately, I have a gravity based septic tank and drain field.
I may not recall all of the formula in first year Algebra, but the formula for extrapolation is seared into my memory. These are the times when you look back, look at where we are now, and with just a little bit of extrapolation where we will be, and say, 'Holy Shit."

Off-grid wells currently a thing I am researching. If you are talking a regular home well it runs on 240 and a portable solar panel is not going to provide enough juice to run that long at all.
If you have a shallow depth well that uses a 110v pump on it you still need more juice.

Solar panel powers 2k storage battery which can provide 240 for a little while. Before that move battery to RV style inline water heater and a quick hot shower, toilet flushing, and filling water bottles is possible for about half an hour per day.
I think it would take quite a few solar panels to power 240 without a battery.
