When summer fades and the days get shorter and darker, it's called the "off-season" in vacation rental parlance. Put "off" as a prefix to almost anything and it's a negative. So autumn, fall, is negative. Spring is upbeat, every day is longer than the last, trees and flowers, blooming and growing. Fall means death, decay, with the promise of frost on your windshield and being dark at 4:30 PM when you are on your way home from work. Seasonal Affective Disorder is prevalent, real, and crippling. Dark days ahead. Just look at this painting.

The artist, William Chaiken, was born in Russia to Jewish parents in 1921. They emigrated to Canada in 1926, and he grew up studying art. He was a background/scene painter for Broadway productions and the Metropolitan Opera, and worked with Scorsese, Fosse and Sydney Lumet.
He seemed to love working in color gradients. Some of the tones of other paintings are vibrant and joyous, but it seems most of his work is variations of gloom. The bio doesn't say why he and his family left Russia, but I imagine it had something to do with the Bolsheviks and pogroms. That could certainly color one's outlook. I like the painting. I didn't watch the debate as much as I listened.
So, I though Vance did a lot weaker than most here. He really needs to keep to theme--economy, immigration, inflation. That is, he missed several opportunities to direct his answers back to those, I thought. Walz said "look" at least 100 times. But, interesting, the traditional "vp as attack dog" role has been switched--Trump is the attack dog and Vance is the policy. Walz tried the traditional role, but he got so far knocked off his game he forgot what he was running for; early he was hitting Trump, later agreeing with Vance. Remember:
Walz lost 90k votes from his election totals to his reelection totals. Lost votes as the incumbent. In blue MN. In an off-year election. In 2022, when anti-Trump hysteria was still riding high. And last night, he told the nation about a MN that most people who live there were probably wondering where that state is. Cause it ain't the one they're living in. I think the polls showing MN at only Harris +5 are too high ... MN may really be in play. Very interesting scan. MIL had same disease. I understand that there is now a Macular Society with low sight aids.
Posted by: Mrs JTB *********** That scan is probably late-stage wet AMD. Their are lesser degrees. 'Wet' refers to encroachment of blood vessels into the macula. For those who may not know, the macula is the area of central vision on the retinal surface. It has the highest density of rods and cones (light teceptoors). When the macula thins out, you begin to lose central vision and start to rely more and more on peripheral vision. If I look directly at an object it blurs or disappears completely. I can see things better if I shift my line of sight about 5 or 10 degrees. Posted by: Muldoon (RIP Jack G.) at October 02, 2024 10:56 AM (uCfKO) 281

A: An oopth-almologist! Posted by: Muldoon For some reason, I've suddenly got two different outfits e-mailing me dad jokes daily. I'm afraid to click on them, though, because they might be phishing. So I aven't actually read any of the jokes yet. Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at October 02, 2024 10:59 AM (v6JzV) 301
does anyone have details, like her name or why they were in Cannes?
If there is a reason to be in Cannes other than to slap a goofy bint around, I'm not sure I need to hear it. Posted by: Way,Way Downriver at October 02, 2024 10:59 AM (zdLoL) 302
Last night Walz tried to pin covid on Trump.. The witches wouldn't let Vance rebut.. Most of the devastation happened under Biden/ Harris

COVID-related shortages will never be forgotten. It wasn't imported then, either. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at October 02, 2024 11:00 AM (HnUIn) ====== Covid was a bipartisan failure of leadership. At best, the failures were good intentioned. But they were still failures. If you want to vote on covid from the point of view that the response was terrible, you have pretty much no one to vote for who was in government at the time. And, considering how American politics goes, you won't have anyone to vote for without that stink for 30-40 years. Minimum. >>I read that 'fact check'. No external references, just a Fact Check seal of approval on an editorial statement by CBS. Except for the fact that there is numerous tape and articles of her being called that contemporaneously. Essentially, GOP candidates have to travel with a roll around monitor and media server so that they can pull up clips during debates. I mean if the MSM is going to constantly and one sidededly "fact check" Republicans then Republicans have to make this part of every debate term going forward. Posted by: rickb223 Gold & Silver Spot Prices at October 02, 2024 10:55 AM (9Tih0) The Israeli writer, Ephraim Kishon, wrote about his wife hoarding commodities after they emigrated to Israel, and he had long arguments with her about it. One day he had bought some granulated gypsum compound to repair the stucco of their apartment and it disappeared since his wife thought it was sugar and spirited it away also, which he decided was OK since she wasn't planning on eating it, and he really didn't want to patch the wall after all. The Lake Lure assistant fire chief is deny access to those trying to rescue people. He threatened to arrest a helicopter pilot yesterday, forcing him to leave behind one man. He'd rescued the wife so the man is up there alone.

Art: a Photo-Realistic painting of a 1970's Colt Python, in Colt's Royal Blue finish.
Though I rate the S&W 586 as a superior platform, it rates nowhere near the sheer beauty of the classic and timeless, Python. My search-fu is lacking as towards finding such a masterpiece online. I would hope that such exists, an if some intrepid Hordian should find such a file, PLEASE send to to CBD, forthwith! It would be far preferable to today's used toilet paper, as shown. Love the Moody Blues. Justin Hayward has the most beautiful male rock an roll voice, or is right behind Greg Lake in that category. YMMV Posted by: J.J. Sefton at October 02, 2024 10:53 AM (x0n13) John Wetton. Posted by: XTC at October 02, 2024 11:14 AM (UnA8+) 321
Nice colors, and I get that it's a mid-20th Century Modernist Landscape, but I'd pass hanging. Sorta looks like 'Dusk, a month after the bomb.'
Thanks. --- The Moody Blues are my favorites, even influencing naming of family. Have gone to see them when down to only two performing, and even now with Hayward performing in collaboration with other artists. Always much more talented than the Beatles, imo. At least we could watch them entertain for decades, not the creation the Beatles allegedly became in studios after their brief, public collaboration.
