Very very nice. It kind of reminds me, if you ignore the houses, of the way Chalmette Battlefield Park looked when I was a kid. That was before they tarted it up with breastworks (don't giggle) and repro cannon, razed a small neighborhood to the southeast, and created a much larger park with a driveway through it.
More specifically, this reminds me of Sunday afternoons in winter, when my brother and I would play there with the sentence of School Tomorrow hanging over our heads. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Sick Unto Death of Hurricanes at September 26, 2024 09:34 AM (J2vNu) 23

Isaac Ilyich Levitan (Russian: Исаа́к Ильи́ч Левита́н; 30 August [O.S. 18 August] 1860 – 4 August [O.S. 22 July] 1900) was a classical Russian landscape painter who advanced the genre of the "mood landscape".
Isaac Levitan was born in a shtetl of Kibarty, Augustów Governorate in Congress Poland, a part of the Russian Empire (present-day Lithuania) into a poor but educated Jewish family. His father Elyashiv Levitan was the son of a rabbi, completed a Yeshiva and was self-educated. He taught German and French in Kowno and later worked as a translator at a railway bridge construction for a French building company. At the beginning of 1870 the Levitan family moved to Moscow. 450 works at WikiArt! https://www.wikiart.org/en/isaac-levitan/ Posted by: andycanuck (CEzQx) at September 26, 2024 09:47 AM (CEzQx) 66

There’s been some good essays over the years on why and how modern art turned to trash. Began when it became popular to be “outrageous” but that inevitably led to the long slide into meaningless vulgarity. And then the Art World became totally ingrown and divorced itself from any connection to the common culture.

Posted by: LizLem at September 26, 2024 09:43 AM (0+96D) ++++ That was the point. Destroying art is difficult. Art appears to be actually fundamental to the human experience, and so is a big thing to try to destroy in the name of whichever revolutionary ideology the destroyer subscribes to. The communists and their fellow travelers hit on a solid strategy to do it, and have been implementing it - largely successfully - for a few generations now: don't attack it directly. Great things get defended, so don't attack greatness. Just ignore it and elevate mediocrity or offensiveness to the same plane as the great, then supplant it. It's hard to destroy greatness and quality with a frontal assault, because too many people notice and if they're not on board (like they were in Afghanistan, where frontal assault was successful), the assault will fail. Elevating mediocrity until everything is reduced to common noise, however, will destroy it all the same. Then you have the ashes of civilization, ready to be ruled by your revolutionaries. An old man dreamed of seeing the capital city and finally got an internal passport to visit Moscow. He arrived at night, but didn't know about Moscow's new curfew and he was stopped by the police as he was walking to his hotel from the train station. The cop demanded the man's papers and asked, "where were you born?" "Saint Petersburg, comrade officer," the man replied. The cop's eyes hardened. "Where did you go to school?" "Petrograd, comrade officer," the man replied. The cop got more agitated. "Where do you live?" "Leningrad, comrade officer," the man replied. The officer grabbed the man's lapels and snapped, "do you want to go live in gulag, asshole?" The man replied, "Nyet, comrade officer. I want to live in Saint Petersburg." MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle is defending Vice President Kamala Harris for transparent idiocy after a preview clip of their interview aired on Wednesday.
In the pre-recorded interview, Ruhle pressed Harris over where she would "get the money" to fund her economic proposals if Republicans on Capitol Hill block her plan to raise corporate tax rates. "Do you still go forward with those plans and borrow?" Ruhle asked, to which Harris couldn't formulate a cogent reply. .. two idiots .. you have to get Congressional approval to spend any money .. doesn't matter where is come from. The Antideficiency Act is legislation enacted by the United States Congress to prevent the incurring of obligations or the making of expenditures in excess of amounts available in appropriations or funds. So far, that play has worked. It will keep working until the bond market says, "nah, we're not buying your vague paper without a decidedly non-vague premium to offset the risks of what is essentially fraudulent issuance." My favorite non-USSR Cold War joke is from East Germany.
Erich Honecker, the head man of the GDR, was known for his dedication and work ethic. He started work every day long before the sun rose. Each morning, at sunrise, he would step out onto his office's balcony and cry out to they sky, "good morning, sun!" Every morning, the sun would cheerfully call back, "good morning, comrade Honecker!" Honecker would then step back inside and get back to the people's work. One day, he was very sick and slept until 10:00 in the morning before dragging himself to the office. He worked all day, missing his morning greeting. At sunset, he stepped out onto his balcony and cried out to the sky, "good night, sun!" There was no answer. He cried again, more firmly, "GOOD NIGHT, SUN!" The sun called back, "Fuck you, Erich. I'm in the West now." Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at September 26, 2024 10:15 AM (HnUIn) 155

I'm not sure the internet is limited, as much as it is being limited, vis a vis Russia. Russians are non-people, every man, woman and child. They are worthy of being on the receiving end of the worst human brutality by the hands of your children, who will be heroes for killing anyone with Russian DNA. Your children, in their graves, will be remembered for the sacrifice they made to kill these Russians. We will say of your dead kids, "they died to protect democracy." And more importantly, their deaths will not have been in vain, for we will begin taking Russian natural resources at a reduced price and put what remains of their people in our system of usury. Speaking of, the ancient settlers of Moscow, where did they originate?
weft-cut loop ... Is that a trick question? Kiev was supposed to have been founded by Askold and Dir. Rurik is supposed to have founded Novgorod. They were Varangians who came from "Sweden", which in those days pretty much included Finland. When they raided across the Black Sea into the suburbs of Constantinople, they were Vikings. There were a lot of Slavs around, and the Varangian warlords soon became so slavicized that some jealous historians insist it was just Slavs the whole time. He was born in Poland of a poor but educated Jewish family and had a very interesting life during which he produced >400 paintings. During the year after his death an exhibit of several hundred Levitan paintings was shown in Moscow and then in St. Petersburg. So some stupid cop on a weed raid, barged into an MRI room and promptly lost his rifle.
The Los Angeles Police Department damaged equipment at a medical center in the San Fernando Valley after an officer lost his gun to an MRI machine, according to a report. Citing a lawsuit filed by the NoHo Diagnostic Center against the city, SFGate reported that a raid intended to find illegal cannabis cultivation in October 2023 discovered nothing but medical imaging equipment and items normal for such a facility. https://tinyurl.com/ykw2epx2 How does one test for the presence/absence of a 'ho' in SF? >>He's the white guy that rapped about being gay because there's nothing more important than being gay, right?
Yes, and he did a duet with some lesbian about lgbt love, and when they performed it at the Grammy, 50+ gay couples walked out into the aisles and were gay married, thus forcing all Grammys attendees to participate in a mass gay wedding. a$$hole Posted by: Lizzy at September 26, 2024 11:00 AM (scDBq) 359

Posted by: Robert at September 26, 2024 10:56 AM (8smwF) Yeah and he also did some song about how hard it is to live with the guilt of being white in a country where blacks are hunted for sport. It's all really cringey pandering. But also just really low grade dross. Woke music is as almost bad as woke comedy. Socialist art sucks. I was wondering about the ABC whistleblower myself and went to the Black Insurrectionist X page. A complaint has been filed to the FEC and Congress but no action will be taken until after the election. No law was broken so it's not considered essential.

With the country obviously in dire financial straits wouldn't it be better to have a woman President paid at only 80% of a man? Posted by: Deep Thoughts Heh. The 80% arose years ago if/when women stayed home for childbirth, care of family members. Alas, that does not appear to apply to the current, democratic presidential candidate. However, we seem to keep no such statistics for men though they have become more involved in 'family care.' Maybe there's much more equally nowadays? How about Joey give back his VP & President salaries AND also provide reimbursement for the multitude of excessive days off from government service; taking family on worldwide junkets throughout his 'career,' and the unknown cost benefits of having relatives appointed to substantial governmental and private industry positions. Could a nice chunk of change. 🤔😉 Posted by: L - If they'll do it with you, they'll do it to you, too at September 26, 2024 11:14 AM (NFX2v) 369

They are embracing the fact she's an idiot and easily led. Its an amazing strategy. In my 59 years, I cannot recall a single time so much leeway was given to any political candidate, in order to save them from themselves and foist them onto the public, despite many, many well-founded misgivings. I honestly can't think of any comparison other than what you'd do for a child who was scared to go onstage for a talent show -- to encourage them, and to further tell the children in the audience that little Kammy is scared, so please be kind and supportive, even though perhaps little Kammy really stinks at singing. Here's how I know that. Years ago, I tried to learn the Chopin number nine and gave up on it: too hard. When I heard it again just now I could barely remember but it had to be Chopin, so I searched for Chopin Sonata sheet music, without success.
Then it hit me: I tried to learn this piece one time and I gave up. Turns out, I had a local PDF of the score. Posted by: Tom Perry at September 26, 2024 02:00 PM (MX0bI) 376
