Dildoville? Maybe it's wishful thinking nestled in a hidden part of a man's mind, or maybe it's the last stop in the vast design of things—or perhaps, for a man like Mr. CBD, who climbed on a world that went by too fast, it's a place around the bend where he could jump off. Dildoville? Whatever it is, it comes with sunlight and serenity, and is a part of The Twilight Zone.

In an age of incredible computing power that runs software to optimize package movement through delivery systems, combined with amazingly precise scanning systems, the idea that a package can by misrouted at so many stops along the way is difficult to understand.
++++ Not particularly. Hyper-efficient systems are undone by unexpected variance. A mistake in the last mile often won't get routed back to the post office to try again (except, possibly, as a brief stop), it will get routed back to the mega-sort. So the package gets missed by a local handler, and goes on the "try again" pile. Then it gets shunted back to a mega-sort (Teterboro, in this case), where it is also handled as an exception to be moved through - get it out of here. So then it bounces around until finally it finds a slot back to the last target post office. I've seen it myself, in the USPS but also in UPS and FedEx. These distribution networks work *extremely* well until there's an error. Errors then compound. Zero misses are fast and efficient. A single miss almost doesn't exist anymore. A single miss will become a half-dozen misses. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at September 26, 2024 11:08 AM (HnUIn) 18

We arrive at the United States Postal Service!
++++ I am much more accepting of the problems with the USPS than I am of problems in virtually any other agency or program. The USPS, at least, operates with an actual mandate. Of all the services handled by the federal government, there are few that are actually Constitutionally chartered and fully legitimate. The USPS is one of them. Its operation is mandatory, and explicitly defined in the Constitution. The Congress shall have Power ... To establish Post Offices and post Roads; Article I, Section 8. Plain as day, and clear as a bell. Warts and all, the USPS is fully and actually legitimate. There is *always* room for improvement and vast waste that could and should be cut, but at least the USPS - unlike the other things you mentioned - has clear parameters and is a legitimate function of the government. I ordered a pair of pants online. They delivered through USPS.
The day of the delivery I got a message from the company that said USPS hadn't delivered my pants because of "animal interference". I was home all day and have no outdoor pets. I asked my regular mail man when I saw him he said that someone else handles the type of delivery I was talking about and to call the mail room. So I called the mail room. After trying a dozen times. Woman said she had no idea where my pants were but she'd find the driver and ask him about it. This went on with me calling every other day for a week and then suddenly my pants showed up. See? Isn't this system great? If you pester them enough they will actually do their jobs! Posted by: 18-1 at September 26, 2024 11:12 AM (oZhjI) 39

As far as the USPS goes: Federal Express is not much better. I ordered a steam mop from Walmart and was promised delivery the next day. Delivery happened; I got a photograph of the box sitting on the doorstep.
Unfortunately, it wasn't *my* doorstep. Somewhere in this big rundown apartment complex, somebody got an unanticipated steam mop, new in box. I called Fed Ex and opened up a case. Their eventual answer a day later was, "We delivered the package. Take it up with the vendor." On average, across the system, it's more efficient. For local-to-local mail, though, it *sucks.* Also for misdelivered or missed deliveries like CBD's (which are, in essence, a local-to-local problem). It can't go back to the local PO to retry or get dumped right into the local PO's stream, it breezes through the local PO and sent up the spoke to the local or regional hub to retry. It *should* go back right back down the same spoke to the local PO for the next attempt, but if it goes along a different spoke to a regional hub, things get messy and you get the weird bounce-along like CBD saw. --- Sunk cost fallacy. Everyone believes they "paid" in to it, so they "deserve" at the least their money back. The people's expectations about desserts seem entirely justified to me. The government took that money at gunpoint, preventing alternative investment, based on the oft-repeated lie by politicians that they'd see their return. There's no fallacy inherent in that thought process. "Fuck you, you should have understood we were cheating you all along" is not the winning argument you think it is. You wouldn't accept that from anyone you did business with voluntarily. As a practical matter, SS eventually will end because it's a ponzi scheme built on demographic assumptions that no longer hold. But people aren't wrong to think they deserve what they were told they would receive. In terms of sunk costs, it's not like the acutely 29 can get a do-over. Social Security is truly a sticky wicket. Because yes, we all could have made more money investing instead. And within our compound, we would share advice and tips. Most of us would be fine.
But open our gates and look around- we have people making a decision on who to lead our country based on joy and killing babies, as if somehow those 2 things can exist together. Or if those 2 things provide services a government should be providing - roads and bridges that don’t fall down, or a strong military to protect us from invaders. I mean, they are voting for a crew inviting the invaders in! Do you believe they would invest? Is it our problem if they don’t? Not really. But it will end being so- Do we have a forced 401K instead? Warts and all, the USPS is fully and actually legitimate. There is *always* room for improvement and vast waste that could and should be cut, but at least the USPS - unlike the other things you mentioned - has clear parameters and is a legitimate function of the government.
Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at September 26, 2024 11:11 AM (HnUIn) USPS is a physical spam delivery service. It’s staggering the amount of junk mail they dump at my house, particularly political mailers (Nikki Haley must’ve sent me five pounds of trash.) The few “legitimate” pieces of mail I receive—about 1% of the volume—could be done electronically or sent via UPS. I do get lots of packages from USPS, so that part is fine, I guess. The post office gets paid to deliver junk mail to unwitting customers who can’t opt out. I consider that criminal and we should start jailing Postmasters until it stops. Posted by: BourbonChicken at September 26, 2024 11:31 AM (cf/0E) "umlaut" just rounds the vowel below it. "diaresis", which looks the same, makes it explicit that two adjacent vowels are separate, and not a diphthong. It absolutely does, per Title 39 of the U.S. Code. In fact it has two monopolies. One is the delivery of anything defined as a "letter," and the other is the use of your mailbox. It is illegal for anyone other than the USPS to use your box.
You know...the one that you own. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at September 26, 2024 11:34 AM (d9fT1) ++++ "Non-urgent" letters, yes. Yet you can send a letter via UPS Ground "extra small" and it's about the same delivery time as USPS - at 16x the cost. There is no private equivalent to book rate/media mail that I am aware of. Even without the legally-protected monopolies, there'd likely be no competition against the subsidized carrier because it's not affordable. There'd just be less mail. "quasi" governmental
Economic Policy Institute, March 30, 2023 - In part, "Out of tens of thousands of companies reporting, the United States Postal Service (USPS)—with 516,636 employees—had the highest number of reported severe injuries (1,142) between January 1, 2015, and May 31, 2022." Wikipedia: March 2021, DeJoy issued a 10-year plan called "Delivering for America" to stabilize the finances of the Postal Service by slowing first class mail delivery, optimizing transportation networks, cutting post office hours, and raising prices. The plan assumed Congress would relieve the USPS of the requirement to pre-pay retiree health care costs, which with DeJoy's urging it did with the Postal Service Reform Act of 2022. DeJoy attracted criticism and lawsuits from environmentalists and Democratic governments when he decided to purchase 90% gasoline-powered delivery vehicles in 2022, which he justified in part by the agency's financial situation. After additional federal funding was provided by the Postal Service Reform Act of 2022 and Inflation Reduction Act, DeJoy revised these plans twice; the final version orders 83% electric vehicles through 2028 and 100% electric thereafter. Not to defend big government or the post office, but the existence of FedEx and UPS is the direct result of laws barring the USPS from owning or operating their own fleet of planes (laws meant to underwrite the fledgling airline industry by guaranteeing them income from air mail and deliveries) coupled with the dismantling of the railroad networks that were the fastest and most consistent method of interstate travel.

As soon as JFK issued EO 10988, legalizing public sector unions - something even FDR rejected - every government organization's prime focus became maximizing employment and, thereby, dues. Maximizing employment means minimizing efficiency. This is why the more we spend per pupil, the worse the outcome; the more we spend on mail, the worse the outcome. And why, with constituencies so large, these unions - with millions of members - always will pursue the path of least efficiency. It's also why, when IBM offered a free Services engagement to Obama - arguably a multi-hundred-million-dollar offer (I spent many years as an IBM Sevices delivery exec), Obama turned it down: Increasing efficiency would decrease employment and therefore dues that is recycled from bipartisan tax dollars to DNC campaigns.. which was the goal of 10988.

Zuck is one of the great founder-CEOs of our age. It's quite amazing that a company that he started as a 19-year-old in a college dorm has grown into one of the largest companies on Erf, and he didn't have a professional manager run it, like Google. He also navigated its growth against some of the biggest competitors in history. He had help, of course, but it's a near singular achievement.
His politics, of course, stink. I do believe respect must be paid in the business arena, however. Posted by: Darrell Harris at September 26, 2024 11:44 AM (U08zI) ______ Sorry, but I have to disagree with this. Sorry, but I have to disagree with this. Zuck was a mid-level coder who ripped off the FB idea (and possibly the prototype) from someone else who ripped off whatever that hot personal app was big at the time (can't even remember the name!). There's then a black box of what happened next, but he very soon attracted the attention of moneyed VC types looking for the next big thing. I think of all the zillionaire entrepreneur types, he's among the least qualified and accomplished. Almost just pure luck.
Posted by: Doctor Elric the Blade at September 26, 2024 11:55 AM (iFTx/) I agree with you in an important aspect; Zuck almost certainly stole the idea from the Winkelvoss twins et al. He was very fortunate that the twins settled before the emails proving that he stole the idea came to light. They did very well in their own right, of course. Taking FB stock as settlement, then going all-in on Bitcoin at around $10/token turned out to be a genius move. I still believe in Zuck's business acumen, however. The number of founder/CEOs that got to the top like he did are so small as to show that he had at least some skills. Posted by: Darrell Harris at September 26, 2024 12:00 PM (U08zI) 299

USPS wastes taxpayers' money. The US State-monopoly K-12 school system wastes lives. The $837 billion per year US K-12 credential racket is the second-largest (after China) command economy left on Earth.
State (government, generally) operation of schools in the US has done to education in the US what collectivization of agriculture did to nutrition in Kazakhstan (1929-1933), Ukraine (1932-1933), China (1958-1962), Cambodia (1975-1979), and Ethiopia (1984-1985). So yesterday Carahsoft was raided by the Fibs. CarahSoft is a $13 Billion privately held company that is a major IT supplier to the government /public sector. My first thought is Why? No specific answer yet from the government.
The second thought is, is there anyone in government that is smart enough to determine if CarahSoft (or any software company) is doing something illegally. The third thought is: Did the government have to hire another contractor (and likely a CarahSoft competitor) to do the investigation and...Oh Look! Criminal activity! There are a few managers and unions that are ba*tards but they're called upon, especially around times of elections, to be somewhat ...obstructive, perhaps the best identifier.
It was seen and experienced around Philly in 2020, with Democratic US Reps. doing their photo ops and speeches on how another round of PDT would be a horror. Remember the stories of PA ballots found in a truck parked up state, and so on? And it was also seen pre-Christmas before the new US Postal Service Act 2022 approved by Congress. I really like the local usps offices and the mail delivery personnel who have huge routes and do a great job overall. They're just regular workers like most but they work long hours under tough conditions. PS - USPS also has a lot of temp workers depending on regions. The R should have an ad saying, "You know why you pay into Social Security?" Then close up on a MIB racking a pistol and turning it toward the camera. Pull back to see troops pointing rifles. Everything the SSA sends you is designed to provide that illusion. Your SSA statement looks like a pension. "You paid in X, you hit the minimum, your payout is expected to be Y, on these schedules."
The fact that they can do this - that is, give you a statement with all this information, your contributions when and how much and that they can and do track the years that you didn't contribute - tells me that it would be trivial (... for a given value of trivial) to allow people to opt out. Every time you change jobs, every time you update your W-2, just add a little click box "Click/check this box to contribute to Social Security". Make a separate one for Medicare "Click/check this box to contribute to Medicare". ... I guess technically that's opting in. But you could opt in for one job, opt out for a different job, opt in or out depending on the tax year. And they already have the infrastructure in place to track that. Just a reminder that temperature is not the only thing hurricanes need: 1) Water, and lots of it 2) That water be warmed up nice 3) Upper level winds are calm enough to allow formation. Break up any of those three, no hurricane. If increased temps cause more upper level winds, then you'll get fewer hurricanes, despite the warmer waters. If only we had an agency that would keep track of wages and FICA taxes over a person's lifetime with the intention of paying them a small "pension" based on those wages. That agency could have a website where you could login to your account and view any wages you have earned over your lifetime. For example, you can click on a given year and it will show you your wages and employers for that year. Then we could have a "reporter" from a "free press" sit down with Kamala, watch her click the right year on the computer and see if she worked there or is lying. If only. Eventually it arrived at a Post Office in Louisville. Status was always 'pending something or other' but it never left there and a week later HP had to send me another.
I think status should have been: 'Stolen'. Why it went to a post office? Either UPS or Fedex sometimes have stations in a post office as was the case here. Crazy right? Posted by: Ciampino - Stay safe and dry everybody at September 26, 2024 12:37 PM (qfLjt) 426

I hope this tread isn't "old" yet. Social Security is wildly successful. It is, perhaps, the most successful government program to ever exist.
The biggest problem of Social Security is the most people don't understand it's primary nature: it is primarily an anti-poverty program. And it is a wildly successful one. Without SS about 50% of the elderly would live in poverty. With SS, only 10% of the elderly live in poverty. That is an 80% reduction. (These figures are dated; they are from 33 years ago when I studied for the actuarial exam on Social Insurance Programs) How does it do this? Your SS benefit is calculated based on Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME). I did some actuarial calculations once and came up with these illustrative numbers: A relatively poor person's benefit is 90% of their AIME. A person who receives 90% of AIME (for an average lifespan at 65) "earned" about a 15% return on their and their employer's SS taxes over a period of time where the S&P earned about 12% annually. A person earning the maximum SS benefit gets about 28% of AIME. This person "earned" about 0% return on their and their employer's SS taxes over a period where the S&P earned 12% annually. Of course the argument for interstate networks of roads, and armed forces, and all of the processes and infrastructure that crosses state lines seems like a justification for government involvement.
I wonder how Europe managed international commerce with all those Nations butted up against each other - each with different culture, different history, different traditions, different languages, different currency (until recently), different laws, different alliances, different policies, different forms of government, and all that.
