1. There was a humongous explosion at a Russian ammo depot west of Moscow. Rampant speculation on the cause. Was it a long range NATO missile, like Zelensky has been begging for? A drone attack attack from the neighboring Baltic states, which would be a huge escalation? Or maybe it was just incredibly sloppy munitions handling and an accident.

Or maybe the Russian munitions techs just got a fresh shipment of pagers in.

For a brief time, 6 months or so in 1942-43, an American army fought an enemy who had air superiority. Not air supremacy, but still.

The Army taught GIs in N. Africa to identify friend or foe aircraft using the WEFT acronym: "Wings! Engine! Fuselage! Tail!"

The GIs said that WEFT stood for "Wrong Every F****** Time."

194 Vance on Tucker went as well as you'd expect (very well).

At one point he as asked what his sincere belief is about the election, and obviously he predicted a win, but he went into detail, saying their numbers show Kamala is struggling in the states she needs to win, and that right now he's 60/40 with 60% being an early night where they win comfortably, and 40% being a close one but they still win.

Either way he didn't think it would be a "three days later we still don't know" sort of thing.

Fingers crossed.

Yet beneath the double standards, which are painfully predictable, there is something else, too. Something even worse. It’s the flagrantly bigoted belief that everything Israel does is a war crime. This nation can’t do right for doing wrong. If it fights its Islamist foe from the air, as it is doing in Gaza, it is committing a crime. Yet if it plants deadly weapons directly in the pockets of the Islamists who want to destroy it, that is also a crime. If it bombs neighbourhoods in Gaza where Hamas lurks, that is ‘indiscriminate slaughter’. Yet if it behaves in a highly discriminating fashion and puts mini-bombs in the trousers of terrorists, that is ‘barbarism’.

This is indeed being discussed as one of the benefits of this operation. Removing a large number of comparatively important players from the board, bam, all at once, without any operational losses of your own. In addition there will be the social/economic burden of treatment and long-term care for many.

Many of those believed to have had the 'splodin walkie-talkies today were in the Radwan Force, Hezb's best-trained/best-equipped unit. The pagers of course were also given to the relatively senior types (incl. the Iranian ambassador). Altogether, potentially a truly (and historically unprecedented) pre-emptive blow to an enemy.

265 "It’s the flagrantly bigoted belief that everything Israel does is a war crime."

Well yeah flagrant bigotry and hatred obviously are involved.

But more relevant is that these people are simply ridiculously wrong in every detail. They use "war crime" as a vague epithet, with no connection to the actual meaning. Gaza, for example, has Hamas committing war crimes in nearly everything they do, by deliberately seeking military advantage by mingling combatants with non-combatants and using protected sites the same way. By contrast, Israeli strikes on them comply with actual customary and formal law of armed conflict - actually they seem to follow standards well above those.

Like so much else in today's world, preposterous factually incorrect slanders and fantasies constitute the entire "position" of vast swaths of people and entire institutions.

One should note that sounds travels faster in a solid medium, such as string, than it does in air. I wonder if one could use length of plastic tubing, filled with water, to transmit sound from one station to another? Coupling it to the diaphragm might be tricky.

Optical light transmission, transmitting through lenses so very tightly focused into a narrow beam, as to lead one to think they were trying for Laser. These, "firing" through a 35cm length tube, so as to further the "aimed" light effect.

Receiving instrument, An optical sensor, placed as far as two miles away.

In those days, damn near undetectable, and damn near un INTERCEPTABLE. Limitation, the "baud rate", noise/clarity/filtering of the signal over distance.

Inverse Square Rule on the "carry" of light, was a brass plated bitch, then and now.

There are two different mechanisms here. In the one case, transmitter and receiver are coupled mechanically, i.e. two diaphragms mechanically linked so that when one vibrates, the other follows.

That is different than conduction, where the medium itself (say, the air) experiences compression and rarefraction.

394 You want a city-scale secure comms system for cheap? Buy a bunch of old CB radios; even the 23-channel jobs would do. And a bunch of cheap-ass laptop computers loaded with voice/text software and translation software. Use the laptop to translate your words into Klingon, and send that out of the CB. Your intended recipient uses his laptop to translate from Klingon back into English. Your opposition might guess what you are doing, but it would take them a while to break the "code". Meanwhile, the last sentence in the Klingon comms is, "now we switch to Elvish".

You could use real languages, too. Just don't be so chatty that the opposition can get enough of a database to figure out which language you are using.

But it is all conduction. I say "pop" into the one can, and the diaphragm moves away from my lips, momentarily reducing tension in the "string". That sends a rarefaction pulse down the line, and the other diaphragm "pops" air into the listener's ear. That cannot happen any faster than the speed of sound in the solid medium of the spring.

I understand what you are saying, but in the one case the 'string' moves linearly in one direction, then the other. There is no perpendicular 'wave' set up in the string. The diaphragms are modulated by the inelastic string. If that were not the case, then a limp string would work as well as a taunt.

408 This ONT is meta, an achievement that merits congratulation. The ending pic reminds Werner of some Deutsch ritual, possibly related to Walpurgis Nacht. The gleaming red eyes of the Jungfraus are the tell here. One of them may also be a furry, an orientation so perverse that it could only have been cultivated by the French. Or the Belgians, if they had spare time. When Werner has the misfortune of encountering Belgians, they plea for mercy. Oh, Herr Herzog, ending our perverse existence is not the action of a morally-upright man. Werner regards them with a level gaze. Good, bad, Fleming, Walloon, Werner is the one that has a revolver. Bruce Campbell said this, and so it is wisdom. But I do spare them. Werner, after all, is not an Austrian.

The brunette Jungfrau in the picture I referenced resembles too closely Aubrey Plaza. This gives Werner and Commander Star Sprinkles the scaries, and so shall we hide behind the sofa. Forget not that instalment three of Werner and Rowdy Roddy Piper Versus the Cat-Eating Scandis comes soon, with guest appearances from Max von Sydow, Klaus Kinski, Ric Flair, Pope John Paul II, and Don Rickles, plus others to be named later. Now I'm trying to remember a bit about waves in materials. For solids, you can have both transverse and longitudinal. The former are shear waves, and the later are "pressure" (tension/compression). Liquids and gases don't usually support shear waves, although very viscous ones can -- take away the sides of a container containing water, the water collapses because it can't support shear, but for a very thick liquid, it would only slowly "seek its own level".

In a long wire/string under tension, IIRC longitudinal waves ("sound") travel much faster than transverse.

Don Pettit had quite an adventure. He got stuck on the ISS after the shuttle fleet was grounded due to the Columbia disaster. He rode home on a Soyuz finally, and that turned into a near disaster.

At the time, they didn't have any high bandwidth system, so he could only transmit very low quality versions of those experiment videos back to earth. He wanted to bring the high quality video he'd recorded back.

The Soyuz was cramped, hardly any room to bring the "tapes" back. He couldn't leave them up there, as they would degrade (long term radiation events, IIRC).

So he brough them back in a little pack sitting his lap....

Now, coming back, that Soyuz suffered some mechanical failure which caused it to go into a steep, "ballistic" reentry profile, which produces very high g forces. He endured about 8g max with that package in his lap. It was the equivalent of several hundred pounds pressing on him.

The capsule landing way off target, then bounced and rolled. He ended up strapped in his seat hanging upside down for a while until the recovery team got there.

There's some video of them pulling him out. He just sort of collapsed on the ground, looking ridden hard and put up wet.

But he saved those videos.

Sad but I can only buy that staple when it's on sale now ($5 or 6 a lb.); the regular price is around $7-9.

I hate cooking up a pound, but I love having cooked bacon slices in the freezer. When you want a bacon, egg and cheese on a roll, a classic breakfast sandwich here in NYC, having cooked bacon in the freezer makes cooking all that bacon up worth the time it takes to do so.

Posted by: RickZ at September 19, 2024 02:33 AM (gKDq2)

438 RickZ, I got a 2.5lb pack for $14. Best price in a while.

Cooking the whole thing, for just the same reason: ready -to-use slices in the freezer (and some in fridge).

It's a special treat these days-- what *used to be* a staple.

*sigh*

444 It's funny. My very first encounter with how sausage was made was at my Hungarian Grandma's, when I was about 5 or so. We drove up and hanging upside down and tied spread with a bullet hole in its head was a pig. A day or two later, my Grandma, my aunt and my Mom were in the kitchen using one of those cast-iron meat grinders that tighten to a table and were stuffing hot hot sausages (for my Grandma's live-in, Tony; yeah, even back then). My Mom claimed her hands burned from mixing the meat with the hot spices. Thankfully, I got the Hungarian gene (not the West Virginia Hillbilly one) when it comes to hot food.

461 7 hours is my absolute minimum sleep-- did it for years & was just *wiped out* by the time my 10-12 hour shifts were done. Would "catch up" sometimes on weekends, if no major chores to do. Didn't happen often enough, LOL.

Think often about how much more I could accomplish, if only my body didn't require so much sleep! Decades ago, I took.. uh.. chemical enhancement.. to stay awake. Probly not good for the ol' ticker though.

465 Caffeine was a help to me with the sinus mini-migraines I used to get, like a nail driven over my left eye by my nose. Nauseating. They began to last longer in my forties, and I got an Rx for Seldane. It was loaded with caffeine, Ive since found out. A No-Doz might have worked for me, I think now.

The headaches vanished almost thirty years ago now, and I am very thankful. Popping No-Doz would have been a major mistake.

466 Anyway! I'm up early as usual, looking at a slow day at work today and (I hope) Friday. Planning to buy some new running shoes this weekend from a local runner-focused shop where I got my current pair about four years ago, during the early Sniffle Scare. And perhaps I'll go around the corner to a local Italian bakery for some gelato afterward.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at September 19, 2024 04:16 AM (omVj0)

467 JQ, very fair comment. It sounds like I'm on the gaining time side of sleep needed. I begin to get tired when under 5:45. 5:15 or less and I will need a nap. Otherwise pretty steady around 6:10 a night and I'm good to go.

They bothered me every two weeks or so from the time I was twelve. I learned to work, study, and power through them. When one was beginning to fade, I found a Coke often knocked it out and made me feel like I was reborn. Usually they'd vanish overnight . . . but when they began to last into a second day when I was about forty, I got the Rx. Suddenly one day I found the bottle in the medicine cabinet and they had expired six months before -- and I realized it had been that long since I'd had such a headache. They haven't come back.

I understand Seldane got yanked from the market around that time. Not sure why.

486 The Missing w/ Cate Blanchett and Tommy Lee Jones was on Grit last night. Watching the beginning last night before bed, I thought I recognized the actor playing the sheriff in the film's New Mexico of 1885. It was Clint Howard. IMDb says the role of the telegraph operator was played by his brother Rance . . . and Ron Howard directed the movie.

Clint (in 2003) looked a lot more normal and presentable than he did as an adult actor in the '70s and '80s. Maybe he finally had his teeth done and a good hair weave added.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at September 19, 2024 04:44 AM (omVj0)

487 We're not "Texas hot" here, but regularly hit 100+ in June through August. More days *over* than *under* if not consecutive. Humidity ranges 20-30 mostly, but goes lower sometimes, even down to 10% turning us into a tinderbox.

We do get snow. Got the whole 4 season thing going here...
