The Iranian action in Lebanon and Syria has been pointing to "yes" as the answer to the first question.

IoT is, generally, a security and vulnerability nightmare. It's one of the reasons I have none of that stuff in my house.
But I *suspect* that this could be a case of just seeing Jews under every bed. If anything goes wrong for someone with Hezbollah, they're probably fairly inclined to assume that Israel did it. A solar battery blows up or a camera bursts into flames. Why? Was it random bad luck? That happens all the time.
Or it was Israel. It had to be Israel. Israelis are electronic supermen who can do anything they want with impunity.

I've got all my IoT devices on a segregated vlan. I've got an AC system, lawn sprinkler system, keypad door lock, and a couple of smart power plugs that turn on and off a couple of lamps. None of them have cameras or microphones that one could use to see or listen in on me. The segregated vlan ensures these devices can't be used as a jumping off point to hack into computers or anything more valuable on my network.

The modern descendants are Z-Wave and Zigbee. I haven't decided which I'll do yet. Both can be built into truly offline systems. Some of the convenience (remote control) goes away, but the systems are not on the internet. Local (physically nearby) exploits are probably still possible, so I still wouldn't use it for door locks or access functions.

Two reasons. One is real and the other is a "because we can" kind of thing.
1. Modern tools can have pretty wild settings and lots of detail. An app makes it easier, so why not. The bluetooth module is in there anyway because
2. it makes fleet management far, far easier. A contractor can know how many tools are on site, where they are, who they were issued to, their condition, etc. Large sites with lots of tools are easier to manage. The apps and settings are a bonus.

Most phones have a Hotspot feature where your phone can act as a network hub for other devices. Put the thing on that network, turn on hotspot, configure, turn off hotspot on phone and remove the external antenna if any and you otta be pretty safe.

Yep. Still have a Warp 3.0 cd rom downstairs along with one for Windows NT, Windows 2000 etc. Major issue with Warp at the time was drivers for hardware which is still a problem area for some flavors of Linux.
Someday I might get a laugh by trying to install it on some period computers that I still have downstairs. FWIW, you can buy an updated version of OS/2 even today.

Ukraine and the UK drone'd up a Skidoo type jet ski and used it to try and blow up a bridge into Crimea. Most of the initial drones used for combat recon early on for Ukraine were off the shelf commercial ones, run by normal phones and tablets. Specialized ones came later. The Russians took a town a few months back by zipping into town on motorbikes right out of showrooms and getting in and in place before arty or drones could get there and interfere.
Lots of the night vision equipment in use on both sides is commercial bought on the market. The Japanese used bicyles to get some added speed on backwoods trails in WWII invasion of Malaya.

I was at Siemens when XP was about to be out of support. Their "plan" was to talk to Microsoft to negotiate an extended support plan. They didn't know how much that would cost, and didn't care. Siemens had several custom software suites that only ran on XP and they had zero intention of updating those suites.

I had to stick my neck out refusing to obey unlawful orders from an O-4 once - I didn't just stay at a holiday in express last night. It rather pisses me off to see people who are approaching the ethical and legal implications of this in a really half-assed way.

And then I saw the lunacy of campus liberalism at the U. of Michigan. Collateral damage appears to be minimal. It also looks to me like icing the entire Hezbollah command structure probably wasn't even the goal. Chaos, confusion, distrust and mapping were probably the primary goals. If so, then goals achieved - with very little collateral damage.
When the Arabs attack Israel, "indiscriminate" is the best-case scenario. These attacks were not controlled top-down, but they were not indiscriminate or widespread in the sense of non-targeting.

It wasn't a *fear* it was an absolute certainty. All armies in WWII had the gas in reserve.
A ship full of gas shells blew up in a harbor in Italy as it was being stored/unloaded. Quite a few casualties, not much talked about.
And the worst thing about the free use of gas in WWII is that all that is that it wasn't any more effective than regular shelling in inflicting casualties and taking positions once everyone had countermeasures. One MG team in an area the gas isn't blown to ruins your attack even if the enemy doesn't have countermeasures.

Hadn't heard that, but again the rules were a lot different on the East Front for both sides. But even there neither side used gas in combat much for reasons but the base reason is that it just doesn't work very well.
