THE MORNING RANT: Broken Institutions & the Rot that Ensued from Kicking Out Conservative Institutionalists

No Longer Welcome museum.JPG

Ace had an excellent post last week about the state of institutions that formerly served an important role in society – institutions which were once worthy of respect, but are now irreparably broken. I would like to expand on that, pointing out that the eviction of conservatives from once-great institutions destroyed the foundational structures which sustained them. Without the volunteer labor, financial support, and reverence for an institution’s legacy that conservatives brought, many institutions find themselves in collapse – financially, structurally, and reputationally.

In that post titled Brokenism: The Main Political Battle of Our Time, Ace wrote, “It's between those that recognize our institutions are corrupt and hopelessly broken, and those who continue insisting, in the face of all evidence, that everything's fine and Our Precious Institutions have never been better. They just need ‘preserving’ and ‘protecting’ from people who... criticize them.”

Ace’s subject material was a Tablet piece titled “Brokenism” written by Alana Newhouse. In this piece, Ms. Newhouse relays this from a correspondent of hers:

"I'm not a Democrat or a Republican, I don't even think I could define myself narrowly as either a liberal or a conservative anymore. The one thing I know that I fundamentally do believe is…that the dominant institutions of American life--in education, in the arts, in politics--are either totally broken or so weak or corrupt that they're becoming irrelevant. In a way, the only thing I know that I believe in is brokenness."

Over at Twitter, the always insightful Coddled Affluent Professional offered up this spot-on observation a few months ago: “One of the stupidest things libs have done is kick conservatives out of the institutions. No one is more committed to an institution’s mission, reputation, and good health than a conservative institutionalist. There are so many key tasks that libs lack the work ethic and temperament for that conservatives will just take care of instinctually. Terminal narcissists, the libs were unaware of the free ride they were getting. Now there’s chaos and things are collapsing left and right, and it’s just a bunch of libs shrieking hysterically at each other.

Coddled Affluent - Conservative institutionalists.JPG

Just one example of many is The Art Institute of Chicago’s determination a few years ago that accepting volunteer labor from white docents is an act of racism…so it fired them.

“Chicago museum fires all of its mostly White female, financially well-off docents for lack of diversity” [Fox News – 10/17/2021]

The Art Institute of Chicago fired all of its trained volunteers and guides last month, who were mostly older White women, to diversify its team.

The firings were apparently sparked by the fact that most of the docent staff was composed of older White, financially well-off women, the outlet reported. Stein said that the museum needed to take a new path "in a way that allows community members of all income levels to participate, responds to issues of class and income equity, and does not require financial flexibility."

As I noted at the time, “The Art Institute’s endowment is worth in excess of $1 billion. It was probably contributed by the same out-of-favor people who volunteer as docents. To show its commitment to ending racism, the Art Institute must re-distribute its endowment to Chicago’s non-docent class. Anything short of redistributing that full $1B endowment would be racist.” Alas, the Art Institute will keep the money given by the docent class, while also purging the museum of their physical involvement in the museum’s operation.

These actions have consequences. Benjamin Blair had been a contributor to the Art Institute of Chicago. A few months later he wrote this at The Chicago Contrarian.

My annual membership to the venerable institution was up at the end of last year. And when it lapsed, after “Docent Gate,” I responded that my family would not be renewing in an e-mail response to the renewal notice. I told the Art Institute of Chicago “no” on my family membership renewal because the docents were essential to why we loved the museum so much over the years, and that one-sided political advocacy from such an institution was deeply disturbing to me.

On a more personal level, I grew up with the Presbyterian church (PCUSA) that my family attended playing a prominent role. In the 1970s and early ‘80s, much of my social life revolved around that church. The adult role models who helped shape my values were very active in it, and I observed retirees dedicating themselves to the church, both financially and with their time.

The Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) has since collapsed, losing 70% of its membership between 1990 and 2022, dropping from 3.8 million members to 1.1 million. This was due to radical leftists taking over the church. They wear the vestments, but they’ve rejected the tenets of the faith, replacing The Word with left-wing politics. I had had enough and quit the Presbyterian Church about 20 years ago, but my mother hung on until just a couple of years ago, continuing to volunteer her time and money. Her peers kept peeling off, however, and going to non-denominational churches where they receive biblical guidance centered around an actual faith in God and Jesus. My mother, who is in her 80s, is still an active church-goer, but after 60+ years of being in service to the Presbyterian Church, it finally succeeded in running her off, and she now attends a non-denominational church.

Meanwhile the Presbyterian church my mom had been attending is about to close permanently. The kids disappeared when young families stopped bringing their children to a church that treats the rainbow flag as sacred. Sunday School obviously went away too, without children to attend it, nor volunteer parents to teach the children. The choir evaporated, with some volunteer singers choosing to leave for churches that were still vital, while others drifted away when they couldn’t stomach singing hymns that changed the lyrics to a gender-neutralized God. And, without all the retired and empty-nest men offering their time to the church’s upkeep, the grounds and facilities fell into decline.

The old institutions cannot be salvaged. It’s best to think of them as already dead and gone. Let’s defund them, disregard them, and create new institutions where the void needs to be filled.

15 The left works as a virus - whatever the original intent of an institution was as soon as the left takes it over the only thing it produces from that point on is more leftists.

So as odd as it might seem the purge of conservative "institutionalists" who don't stop them from doing that but do make the origination function better is a good thing.

Now if those conservatives had fought the take over? That would have been a different story but generally they did not.

Disagree. The institutions are packed to the rafters with conservatives. That's the problem.

The old political or pseudo-political definitions are irrelevant. Here's an example most of you will probably disagree with, but I think underscores the point: "the Millennials may be the most conservative generation in American history."

Well, they are. They are uniformly progressive. The institutions they're taking over from the Boomers are uniformly progressive. They will maintain that position and rigorously and passionately defend the their progressive basis. They're the most hidebound and knee-jerk conservative generation I have ever seen. They put the Boomers to shame in terms of their passionate defense of the institutions.

Just because they're progressives, it doesn't mean they're not conservative. They're arch-conservatives in reality. The political sub-definition is less important.

23 Broken? Or is all going according to plan?

See, that's the thing about 'I'm not a conservative or a liberal'....if you have no values, how can you say if something is broken or not? Clearly Alana Newhouse has SOME standards, she value she measures things against. But her brain has been zapped just like her peers. She can't even say that conservatism is right or better, but some part of her sees that it is.

I remember my teenage experience in the Presbyterian Church. I had to take Sunday School classes where I learned a couple of good looking girls attended. The ministers son was also in the class and he taught me how to tie a hangman's noose. I seem to recall communion was passed around in tiny wine glasses. Possibly grape juice. It seemed the end of every service 'Onward Christian Soldiers' was played and sung.

It was interesting experience. Shame to see they shot themselves in the foot.

47 I don't think it's fair to say any of these institutions are "broken." They are running exactly as their leadership intends them to.

Which not coincidentally is exactly how wary conservatives warned they would ultimately be run. Regardless of its original or supposed mission, any big institution will inevitably be run solely for the benefit of its members and at the expense of its supposed constituents.

In a way, it's amazing the institutions ever functioned at all for the benefit of its constituents. That was the "broken" institutional model. The institutions have all just returned to their natural state of vile putrescent selfish scumbaggery.

But the traditional conservative conserves things like the constitution and/or actual Christian beliefs. "Conserving" communism and atheism is just being a good "progressive, still tearing down, not really conserving.

But, what about those people who keep to themselves and don't advertise their political leanings? Well, one way it was done in the alphabet agencies you likely saw a couple months ago. The CIA issues a memo talking about a transgender employee that was able to do his job better based on that "mental illness." It was sent to the Pentagon, Homeland Security, etc. There is no reason for the memo to be made or sent to those entities...unless you are trying to solicit a reaction from employees (water cooler talk). And, say the wrong thing and you're put on the path to removal.

The Progs didn't want to destroy America (or the West more generally), they wanted to take it over. The wanted it to end as it *was* but continue to thrive as they *made* it. This was possible in their minds because of the inverted causality. That isn't a lust for destruction as such, that is a quest for revolution. Yes, the old is dismantled after a fashion, but it is replaced with a better new.

Well, the "better new" part depends on being able to actually do it. If you can't, you just get the "dismantled" part of the process.

Our (Catholic) church recently adopted the St. Michael Hymnal. It is specifically dedicated to retaining God as the father and Jesus as the son. It retains the original long-term lyrics for all the hymns it includes and only chooses new hymns that don’t bowdlerize God. It’s a very impressive work.

That's not how this works at all. The entire prog political ideology is built around:
- Leaders jockey to define what is true today
- Lackeys backstab each other and direct progroms against the unwashed masses, competing to display piety
- The unwashed masses either out themselves by not getting today's memo, or spend all of their time scrambling to not be labeled a Nazi

Lefties demand that we hire people who show they are lefties. Whatever the nominal claim is it is ultimately "this person is a leftist is we should hire zer"

Many conservatives think that because the final vote tally was very close in the swing states, that means the steal wasn't that big. I think that ignores the overwhelming evidence that the steal was as big as was needed, with no limits at all.

I think tens of millions of votes were fraudulent. Maybe you think I'm nuts? Well: In GA alone, over 1.5 million ballots were blatantly and obviously illegal and almost certainly phony. If they can do that basically in one blue city in a mostly red state, what do you think they can do elsewhere??

Ditto, only it was the Episcopal Church here. The smug and self-satisfied attitudes of the overwhelming majority of members that were in positions of authority in the parish were repellent in the extreme. One might say that they were exemplary bigots who were blinkered regarding their own bigotry.

I had been a vestry member and the treasurer just prior to bowing out. The parish had just commenced its search for a new pastor. I heard, approximately three years after we had departed, that the man they hired as a replacement had been dismissed after having been found to have been conducting an extramarital affair with the wife of a parishioner. Well done, good and faithful servants! Well done, indeed!

The reason they cater to freaks is to use them as cannon fodder during the transition and to create opposition from among their traditionalist opponents. 181 Meanwhile the Presbyterian church my mom had been attending is about to close permanently. The kids disappeared when young families stopped bringing their children to a church that treats the rainbow flag as sacred. Sunday School obviously went away too, without children to attend it, nor volunteer parents to teach the children. The choir evaporated, with some volunteer singers choosing to leave for churches that were still vital... And, without all the retired and empty-nest men offering their time to the church’s upkeep, the grounds and facilities fell into decline.

This is exactly the situation in my Episcopal church. It has been here since 1774, but I fear it will not survive another 20. All of the maintenance, service, and extra things are done by 29 year olds. My wife heads Christian Education, and you couldn't find someone better for the job at any price, but young families simply don't come to church anymore. A recent poll of the congregation said that bringing more children and young families was the top priority, but they never stop to consider just why they aren't coming any more.

"Docentgate" wasn't a case of kicking out conservatives; most of the docents were well-off, older white women who were liberal to the core. Rather, it was a clear case of racism: they were fired because they were white. Period. The AIC wanted more POCs as docents, but couldn't figure out how to recruit them in the usual way (not many blacks come to the AIC), so they decided to fire the white volunteers and hire blacks. It makes sense for the AIC to want to grow its base membership, particularly in a city that is quickly becoming majority-black; but the leadership went about it in the clumsiest manner imaginable. I have to wonder whether any of the fired docents were red-pilled; frankly, I doubt it.

189 Elric - I could write an entire post on this, but I'll try. 2020 fraud was massive. But it was executed using abuse of mail in ballots. Those ballots in the wild allow Democrats to vote for voters who don't vote.

This year that is much harder.

There are less than 50% of those ballots in the wild this year. For example in NC the number of mail in ballots is 30% of 2020.

Also the increased likelihood of low propensity voters to vote this time removes the number of "vote for them" opportunities.

There is a hard limit on fraudulent votes.

Votes = Trump votes - (Dem votes + Dem mail in fraud) <= Total registered voters

199 Elric - I could write an entire post on this, but I'll try.

Votes = Trump votes - (Dem votes + Dem mail in fraud)

It doesn't seem to matter if they don't have real addresses, maybe not even real names, they are bodies that will be counted, signature matching turned "off", and a few million extra ballots will be counted. They need the extra millions since they need to increase their margin of cheat up to 20%, instead of just 10% (or whatever).

This is capitalism’s greatest strength, imho: that failed enterprises get destroyed and replaced by new upstarts. Sclerotic institutions are a major problem in industrial societies, and as we’ve seen time and again, government institutions or those without sufficient competition and possibility of failure are incapable of reform.

Unfortunately, big business and big government merged during the SCOAMF’s first term, “too big to fail” and Obamacare being two examples.

I do think that red state governors need to review their security arrangements - there may well be a Federal effort to arrest them in the wake of the election.

True, you're talking to a guy who's main driver is a 20 year old pickup, but there are a great many people who don't want to deal with a used car and all that entails.

Also interest rates are typically lower for new cars, although insurance rates are typically higher, so this might be a wash.

Generally speaking, car prices, like much everything else are not going to be coming down anytime soon.

293 Trump shooter 2.0

Dave Aronberg, the state attorney for Palm Beach, says it’s going to be "tough to charge" Trump's second attempted assassin with a "charge against Trump":

"You could charge someone with various crimes, perhaps an attempted murder, without having a shot fired. If you've gone through the planning and have, you know, done something substantial to effectuate that. So you don't have to have a shot fired. But because the former president was so far away, 305 hundred yards away on a different hole, I think it's going to be tough to charge him with the crime against."

"Much easier to charge him with a crime against a Secret service agent who apparently saw the rifle pointed at him. That's the key witness here. And that would be perhaps the most serious charge."

In the 1970s and early ‘80s, much of my social life revolved around that church. The adult role models who helped shape my values were very active in it, and I observed retirees dedicating themselves to the church, both financially and with their time. "

Boy, that hit me in the feels, for I am the same as you. I was a Presby all through my childhood, wonderful times, active in the Choirs and volunteer work, and in the Boy Scouts where we had a local den there. Now, I don't recognize the church I was brought up on. My aunt (who died today, rest her soul) eventually left the PCUSA to become a 7th Day Adventist, and towards the end of her life, even that was starting to erode a bit.

Today is just a depressing day.

313 I know this is already willowed, but just wanted to say this post really hits home for me as well. I absolutely agree that the most important political divide today is between those who believe our institutions are broken, and those who believe they can be reformed and/or should be preserved.

And I have had the same experience with the ELCA. I can't do it anymore. The new ELCA church I tried to join promptly focused on coming up with a land acknowledgement because of all the bad things that happened to the natives here (after they slaughtered a bunch of women and children settlers, but nobody likes it when I bring that up - see Tim Walz' idiocy on the Indian Wars). So now we will probably go low church conservative. I don't like rock bands in dressed up office space, but at least I can get through their faith statement without rolling my eyes or worse. Seems like a small sacrifice if it helps my kids get to know Jesus - without a communist interlocutor.

316 Excellent Morning Rant

I think J.J. had referenced Alana Newhouse's January 14, 2021, piece, 'Everything Is Broken' And how to fix it,' in The Morning Report sometime ago. Newhouse's brave & positive piece struck with me.

"It took me a while, but I eventually figured out what he meant. Sometimes the task of rebuilding—of accepting what has been broken and making things anew—is so daunting that it can almost feel easier to believe it can’t be done.

But it can."
---
In the 2nd piece, referenced above, 'Brokenism, The real debate today isn’t between the left and right. It’s between those invested in our current institutions, and those who want to build anew' you've (Buck) made it even more personal and relatable.

And as Newhouse ended it, "Once you stop spending your time being outraged, you’ll realize how much energy you have for whatever work you want to do. Leave. Stay. Build something new; invest in current institutions to see if they can be made better. Think bravely and creatively about what America needs ..."

Perfect.

Thanks, Buck.

Frankly, even used cars are climbing in price. Unless you total the car, you are better off just maintaining it. Even if you have to replace a motor, $5000 is cheaper than paying $15000 for a used car or $40000 for a new one.
