As for me, I did not sleep as well or as long as I hoped, but I've known worse nights. Having coffee now, about to feed the feline hogs, and planning to work out a little later. The air is less humid and warm, though by no means cool. For a change I'll wait until almost daylight, then drive to a 1/5-mile walking trail not far from my place. Ruark's Something of Value deals with Kenya just before and during the Mau Mau Emergency, so there's a portrait of the British-dominated culture and how the native uprising rocked the old order. Uhuru is from 1960 and confronts the issues about Kenya becoming an independent country. I recall one neat scene. Brian, the lead white character, a safari guide, is driving his latest clients, a brother and sister, near a Masai encampment. The Masai are wearing their usual "kilt"-like arrangement, with, we find, nothing underneath.
A bit of wind blows aside the kilt of one Masai warrior, and the (very likeable) woman client says, "Daddy, buy me that!" Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at September 08, 2024 06:17 AM (omVj0) 82

Baguette muncher will never do that. The thing about the French is, they don’t care if you attempt their language they think you should do it. It’s not something that they respect or are impressed by. In the modern area, the French speak English really well because they know they have to. They still speak French, of course, but they also speak English. They assume you don’t speak French as well they speak English and for the most part that is true, but I will have to say one thing so-called international English is at a very low level.
Americans and Brits are too kind because we don’t call out the shitty level of so-called international English. A lot of people think they speak English well but they do not. The French last people I will go after because they do speaking English well and the one thing about the French that I love is, they don’t try to invade our borders like pretty much every other country does. It is the real captain, stuebing and not one reactor notices it, not one. Sure it makes me feel old, but it also makes me know the reality that young people today know nothing about even the pop culture that occurred 10 years before they were born. If it didn’t happen after they were born, it did not happen. That is a dangerous thing, but this is how we are. Sure They would go after Americans from time to time after a few glasses of wine, but they would never respect a person who tried to and dies himself with them by bashing his own nation. Once you are known to do that, they will never respect you.

but it also makes me know the reality that young people today know nothing about even the pop culture that occurred 10 years before they were born. If it didn’t happen after they were born, it did not happen. That is a dangerous thing,
-- It's worse than that. Tech has most influence on this new ignorance / isolation, probably much more than parents. Parents can teach their kids about Pearl Harbor or how communism has failed everywhere it's ever been tried. But parents can't teach their kids pop-culture social bonds like "Who Shot J.R.?" or "No whammies" or the Powerhouse work song from cartoons. Those have to occur in large groups simultaneously so that the members absorb them and continue to share social connections. Tech has allowed us to be so specialized that we no longer have that. We're engaged in a massive social experiment - sadly with kids at the forefront - involving greater and greater specialization and isolation, and we have no idea where it will take us as a society. Spoiler alert: We have some idea. We're seeing it already, just a few years in. But what will ultimately occur will be beyond any of our imaginations. Two interesting stories back-to-back by Pixy this morning:
Scammers use language to put the mark on tilt so that they can extract information or actions the mark would not normally do. With the first story (the phone call) and the second story ("Earth is past the tipping point) we have the same thing. The scammer is trying to manipulate the mark into doing something that is against the mark's own interests and furthers money and power to the scammer. I have had to suffer through many KnowBe4 courses that train people to detect scams through phone calls and email. One of the common tactics is the use of stress inducing metaphors, costly calls to action based on the flimsiest excuse. Assume everyone lies, including your own mother. We are in a post Christian communist society now and its Kill or Be Killed as we march into the Thousand Years of Darkness. As a side gig, I do the Uber Eats DoorDash thing, and I am the highest rated in the country I won’t get into that. Just recently I had an order and once I was driving to the order, I got called on my phone and they knew where I was going and so on. They told me fraud was involved in blah blah blah, and I was thinking nothing of it, and I probably gave them too much information. Long story short didn’t get a dime from me. Did their best to do so they did harm me. They change some details on my Internet profiles. The reality is unfortunate a ton of people are out there to harm you and literally don’t trust anyone who calls you ever. I’ve seen old ladies get screwed over by the send payments through gift card scam. When in doubt just don’t believe them, hang up and call the company yourself. I'm betting "black pill" is a really good example of the "we no longer have real-life shared experiences and social bonds" I mentioned above.
The term is an online phenomenon, inspired by a movie most people under 40 probably haven't seen, and with extremely limited places it can be used where the specialized group involved understands the reference. My scam was sophisticated. They placed the order for food, although they were far from my state. They told me I had to cancel the order because fraud was involved and then somehow they kept me talking and they changed some of my information with DoorDash.
It really sucks but the reality is people are out there and they’re trying to harm you. I’m from Gen X and back in the day when the phone rang we answered it. I only answered this call because it was during an order and the phone record, said DoorDash. Even after that, DoorDash tried to shame me as if I did something wrong. Then when I called them out, they backed off and helped fix the situation. I’ve seen old ladies scammed, really smart people people from the military, When the scam is going on, you don’t realize it you think you’re talking to a good person, but you’re not the real Posted by: Verlan at September 08, 2024 08:02 AM (OeVvO) 204
Addendum: Which is why it's good to find a church and become involved and go as much as you can. Setting aside the obvious accepting Christ so I don't burn for eternity in the Devil's Hell part, churches are pretty much the last places where real-life communities exist.

Thanks for bringing that line of thought up. Though it began with 200+ cable channels and government schools no longer requiring students to read from a list of books (rather eschewing any titles particularly from dead white men) Leaving Mayberry and moving into large homogenized suburbs didn't help either. I clocked one mile in 10:37 -- pretty good considering I haven't done anything like that in a few years -- and I feel like I'm supercharged. In contrast, my usual slower workout (one mile in 17:00, w/ a lot of walking) leaves me, well, not listless, but not supercharged.
It helped that the outside temp is more like 74 F. instead of 84, and the humidity is down a bit too. I want to take Cooper's 12-minute or 1.5-mile test. The French historically do not respect people that defame their own country. I know the world has changed the ton over the last 20 or 30 years so I can’t speak about that. But I do know historically that is a thing with a French if an American or Brit broke bread with them and started bashing their own country thinking that would make them get along. My cousin and her husband lived in Europe for a couple years. Denmark, Netherlands or somewhere near there.
She considered herself an "ex-pat" while there. I asked if she was still one when they had to move back to the states since she renounced everything about America while there. I haven't talked to the woman in decades since. Posted by: Martini Farmer at September 08, 2024 08:32 AM (Q4IgG) 263
Good morning good people.
Verse for the Day: "I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us." — Romans 8:18 Today is the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin. Mary is celebrated on September 8th, nine months after the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The Blessed Virgin’s parents, St. Ann and Joachim, were an aging couple praying for a child. Mary’s birth was miraculous, as she was conceived without sin (Immaculate Conception), an exclusive grace God bestowed upon her because she was predestined to be the mother of the Incarnate Son of God. The birth of the Virgin Mary ushers in the dawn of the redemption of the human race through Jesus Christ. And that's your Catholic lesson for the day. Yes, this will be on the test. And if you need spices with multiple flavors like four or five that only in itself proves you are a charlatan.
Real chefs know that seasoning means salt and pepper, and the skillful use of salt alone is the greatest test of a real chef. The other ingredients are spices, not sesonings. You don’t need some hard-core leftist commie ti tell you how to sprinkle orther sou es. Posted by: Verlan at September 08, 2024 08:36 AM (OeVvO) 269

Yet more evidence that the former United States, while under Leftist control, is the Evil Empire and Global Menace to Society:
Headline: "Australia may delay release of 2035 climate target as world awaits outcome of US election" That only makes sense when one realizes its Babylon DC who controls hundreds of billions, if not trillions in tax payer gifts to the global Climate Scam. Major "Investors" (read: Rent Seekers and Grifters) are willing to delay their "commitment... that was aligned with The Science™... and reaching for the highest possible level of ambition" (read: expecting tens of billions in grift and money laundering). Shorter version: Trump wins, the world wins; if the election is stolen for Harris, the money floodgates will open to the Globalists and Communists to impoverish the world. @110/Thomas Bender:
"Backing up the files would be as simple as mounting a file system and creating a cron job to run an rsync, cloning one system to the other is a whole other story." Just be aware that rsync will dutifully and faithfully mirror the source machine's files as are presented by the source machine. In other words: If data corruption happens on the source machine, the destination backup machine will do exactly as instructed and will mirror the damage. 1. Verify your file systems before beginning your rsync backup. Do not proceed with the backup if any damage is present. 2. Keep rotating offline backups to be able to restore files from before the point of drive malfunction or file system corruption. We have a "house phone." An actual wired phone. Technically it's cordless, but there is an actual phoneline into the house. Spammers call this number daily, even though we're on the "do not call list." I've blocked so many numbers the phone won't accept any more. Must be hundreds in there by now. For reasons I will never understand, the spouse got a land line when we moved to this part of the world. We had a family discussion on the matter prior to where I brought out the crystal ball and prophesied her future. As sure as the sun rises in the East, she was being hammered with round-the-clock calls from spammers, bail bondsmen and debt collectors looking for any and all of the previous holders of that number. For reasons that I still will never understand, we still have that line, but the ringer is turned off. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at September 08, 2024 08:47 AM (g/syZ) 290

Some of my high school chums and I were "student theater techs" and after graduation they went on to work on the 1990s reboot of _The Outer Limits_...which morphed into a little show called _Stargate SG-1_. I got to hang out with them on set a few times and got stealth invited to some cast & crew parties. Believe me, the writers and producers were baffled and amused by turns by the rabid and frankly weird fandom, to the point that multiple episodes in the first few seasons were written explicitly to poke fun at their own fans.
