28 One thing I didn't realize until recently, the Starliner must have 100 per cent operational thrusters (I'm making an assumption here) right before touchdown on land, to slow it down enough, keep the Gs down or whatever. I suspect that was another concern.

On Apollo they had 3 large parachutes, and had ocean re-entry. They could hit pretty hard, but they didn't ever need thrusters to effect a safe landing.

What goes up, must come down, even late and without a crew. Follow the deorbit and the landing of Boeing's Starliner Calypso. Landing in NM September 7, 12:03 a.m._SpaceAffairs (is Sunni coming back with an extra package?)
--------------------

It was supposed to be this evening. Wonder if they have undocked the little wart yet? Wait! Rooters says that it is undocked. ... "as Starliner autonomously departed the laboratory at 6:04 p.m. ET (2204 GMT) for a 6 hour journey toward Earth."
Reading on Reuters says it's coming back at 11:17PM (0317 GMT Saturday) followed by parachute assisted touchdown at White Sands Space Harbor, New Mexico.

..."bringing total cost overruns on the Starliner program just above $1.6 BILLION since 2016." Hey, a guy's gotta eat.

It was actually on the scale of ~2 kiloton nuke (for reference the 2 WW2 bombs dropped on Japan were ~15 and ~21 kilotons).

Once the tomatoes get ripe the skin gets inelastic, I think. The additional water causes them to swell and that splits the skins. I prefer to pick them and then water the rows to try to avoid that. They split when they get extra water.

Some heirloom tomatoes split a bit just because, the Cherokee Purples for example, and the newer hubrids are resistant. I am growing Cherokee purples and a lot of cherry tomatoes that I thought I had saved from some open pollinated tomatoes that would breed true.

253 anyhow, this morning I split plums to dry to prunes, I cut up and canned what pears I have, since it is a poor year for that tree, and I tried to can apple chunks.

the apple chunks were not a success, they shrank. The next batch I am going to try cutting them up and simmering them for a little on the stove before canning. I do that when I can plums and that keeps the plums from shrinking - or rather they shrink before I can them.
also my wife's Asian pear is loaded with fruit, even after I went out and thinned out about a third of the fruit a couple of months ago.
My garden did not do well this year, I didn't care for it well, but some parts did very well.

We've all heard recordings where a vocalist will overdub another take in unison with the old one. Everyone did it. It thickens the track, sort of like a chorus effect. Well, Sergio did that in concert. He always had 2 lovely lasses singing unison. I saw this many times.
He created a new art form just when jazz was busy driving itself into the ditch.

The area affected seems tiny...a thin string of fires. The best immediate countermeasure would be for the targeted troops to to scatter randomly, so the drone could not hit all of them in one pass. Also, one cool sniper with a shotgun could knock that sucker down.

Pollak said he and Eygi retreated from the hill and the clashes subdued. He then watched as two soldiers standing on the roof of a nearby home trained a gun in the group’s direction and shot at them. He saw the flares leave the nozzle of the gun when the shots rang out. He said Eygi was about 10 or 15 meters (yards) behind him when the shots were fired.

The one part of the Uke war that I still find fascinating is the evolution of combat techniques through drones. I think it’s given a huge boost to defense in general, and has ruined the concept of the main battle tank as an offensive weapon. Simple drones carrying ATGM’s are devastating to tanks.

I suspect muzzle flash is more common when a cartridge meant for use in a full-length barrel is fired from short-barreled carbine. Although the Mosin-Nagant 91-30 is famous for muzzle flash?

357 The one part of the Uke war that I still find fascinating is the evolution of combat techniques through drones. I think it’s given a huge boost to defense in general, and has ruined the concept of the main battle tank as an offensive weapon. Simple drones carrying ATGM’s are devastating to tanks.
Posted by: Tom Servo

Offense has always been easier than defense.

Tanks are more defense than offense: they're "unkillable" artillery. You can push them forward as offensive weapons if you have full control otherwise.

Drones are pure offense: they're ultra-cheap cruise missiles. Using drones at short (UKR vs RUS) distances on home ground makes them look like defense, but they can't hold ground or anything. All they can do is blow shit up, once.

Defense only works when it's overwhelmingly more advanced (iron dome vs. unguided sewer-pipe rockets), or if it's offense pretending to be defense (nuclear M.A.D.), or if the offense is prevented from working effectively by bureaucratic ROE (USA vs. iron-age muslims, USA vs. southern border invaders).

Tanks, as a concept, were destined to fail eventually.

They were very effective, in WWI, at breaking through the trench lines, when there existed no weapons specifically designed to counter them. Sure, an artillery shell could kill one, but hitting a moving target with fixed artillery is problematic.

When both sides have effective anti-tank weapons, the tank battle becomes a stalemate.

Well, my understanding of it is that the original Bob Bourke rendering of the car was the Starliner hardtop, which is the purest form of the design. But the company also wanted a pillared coupe, which is a much stronger, less rattle-prone structure, so that was added. Of course, the '52 Hardtop, which was the first such model in the post-War era, was also called a Starliner. But then the '47-on 5-passenger coupes were all called Starlights, right? Almost like they had a system in place.

Trig and calc were tough classes in high school; the deflection math alone was difficult but very important when shooting from moving cars*. Lots of stress for these scholars. Understandable how they react. Systemic math racism and all that.

* One of our high school trig problems was the position of a fixed place machine gun and the deflection that occurred when traversing the weapon in an arc of say 100 degrees. The bullets didn't go straight, so lots of mathematical formulaic curves. Hard math. Stressful. I sympathize with these poor scholars.

Tomato skins get thick b/c of uneven watering during the fruiting phase of growth. the skin thickens to keep the fruit viable (keep moisture in).

Some growers say tomatos should be picked when they begin to color; then allow to ripen the rest of the way inside, in light. Other growers say pick 'em and eat 'em.

So what differentiates a 1911 in 9mm from a Browning Hi-Power? Are there significant differences in the action?

Serious question.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon

Oh wow.
No magazine disconnect.
Higher magazine capacity.
A better safety from the factory.
Underside frame rail for accessories.

416 Looks sharp and a great price. Please do report how it shoots.

Found it for $599!
I bought my Springfield Armory .45 single stack for $500 a couple decades ago and thought that was a good deal.
BTW, it has been flawless in all the time I have owned it.

417 One of tge things I have learned is that they segregate based upon race in prison.

Posted by: Erebus- ex-killer whale at September 07, 2024 01:09 AM (elaR+)

On top of that, if a melee breaks out say, and you don't fight with your race, your own race might just kill you as a race traitor or something. Racism is at its worst in our prison/jail systems, no doubt about it.

But it is also behind bars where all races know how to handle any chomos that happen to be near-at-handfist.

418 How does it compare to my 49 Olds?
Posted by: Weirddave at September 07, 2024 01:12 AM (JNLDO)

Well, your Olds runs. The Monarch doesn't, but it might be able to. If I get a round tuit. Olds had a then brand-new hi-compression overhead valve V8. The Monarch has the bigger Flathead Ford engine with 255 cubic inches displacement. So less engine, less transmission. Mercs and Monarchs were low, and inspired the customizers to chop tops and lower them even more. So there's that.

Well done on both. And flawless is what we all want. They need to work - every time. Unlike windows and reboots.

Bingo.
Even if you haven't joined a gang you are still expected to jump in with your race if it kicks off on prison.
No exceptions.
Failure to do so gets you targeted.

Thanks! The magazine disconnect was a requirement of the Euro police/military that commissioned the Hi-power, right? And higher mag capacity is a modern thing, too, right? As is the underside frame rail. So perhaps the improved safety is the only real difference that was not imposed by buyer constraints?

What I am trying to get at here, is did J.M. Browning make any major improvements in the automatic pistol action between the 1911 and the Hi-Power? Not so much what latter-day designers have done to the legacy platforms.

Well Springfield and Tisas have introduced a frame rail and you can upgrade the safety levers, but magazine capacity tends to be stuck at 15+1 courtesy of Mec-Gar in 9mm.

Lord yes.
Even after removing the trigger disconnect on the BHP, the trigger pull of the 1911 is still far better

Trigger pull/comfort is a real thing for me. Two best in my set are: out-of-the box Auto-Ord 1927 Thompson repro - it is perfect to shoot and a Model 700 that I had a trigger job done on. 700 is my hunter & it is smooth and light.

446 I think that everything posted made a lot of sense.
But, consider this, what if you added a little information? I mean, I don't want
to tell you how to run your website, however what if you added a post title that makes people desire more?
I mean The Bric, The Brac, The Craic & All, Lets Call
It An ONT is kinda plain. You ought to peek at Yahoo's front page and see how they create post
titles to grab people to click. You might add a related
video or a pic or two to get people interested about everything've got to say.
Just my opinion, it could make your website a little bit
more interesting.
