  • The Windows 11 23H2 Ryzen patch is here. Does it deliver performance as promised by the preview? Yes. Maybe. Sometimes. (YouTube)

Interestingly this video tests Windows 10 alongside Windows 11 2023 and 2024 versions with and without the patch, and Windows 10 often runs faster than unpatched Windows 11.

The problem is that there is a 10% variance in performance between two installs of the same patch version of Windows 11 on the same computer.

That's the kind of thing that leads to bald hardware reviewers.

  • There's a live action Minecraft movie coming. (YouTube)

If you know of the fuss about the original design of Sonic for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, this looks worse.

If you don't know of that fuss, simply put, this movie is going to bomb. Hard. With 350 million crazed Minecraft fans in the world, there is no way this is going to break even.

There's already a gold standard in this kind of thing, in the form of the Lego Movie.

Everything the Lego Movie did right (which is a lot), this does wrong.

    Update: Somebody already fixed it.

The internet taketh away, but sometimes the internet also giveth.

  • China's 7nm chips are close in performance and size to Taiwan's 5nm chips. (Nikkei Asia)

Only problem is that Taiwan is now ramping up 2nm production. And it will take China a decade to get there.

China's 7nm chips are produced using 14nm equipment with multi-patterning, carefully writing over the chip repeatedly using optical effects to produce a smaller feature size than can be achieved directly.

The problem is that this is rather like saving on painting a car by buying half-price paint... That requires twelve coats to provide an acceptable finish.

  • Meanwhile Russia has been dodging sanctions and buying up spare parts for its own chipmaking facilities. (Tom's Hardware)

Which operate on the 90nm node. Some of them. Others are all the way back at 200nm, which is the same process used for Stonehenge.

  • My most downvoted StackOverflow answer. (GitHub)

If you're not interested in the fine details of C vs. C++ arrays, at least scroll down to the quoted Reddit post at the end. It is a thing of beauty.

  • It is truly an exciting time to be buying a new PC. (WCCFTech)

Intel's upcoming desktop Core 7 265K is 2% faster than the current 14700K.

But at least it probably won't commit suicide.

Disclaimer: Probably.

'Tis Friday, the consummation devoutly to be wished, but it's raining. No workout aside from stretches and calisthenics today, I guess. Rain again tomorrow morning, and I might go out to breakfast; but we are supposed to get drier and less-hot air by midday tomorrow. We'll see.

94 From Legal Insurrection:

California Senate Republicans advanced amendments to protect hospitality and service industry employees with a state tax exemption on tips. Legislative Democrats refused to consider the issue and summarily killed the proposal without discussion or debate.

…“It is deeply disappointing that the legislature chose not to consider a proposal that could have provided much-needed relief to California’s workers,” said Senator Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh (R-Yucaipa), who put forth the amendment. “With Californians facing one of the highest costs of living in the nation, our service and hospitality industry employees are particularly burdened by a tax system that leaves them struggling to make ends meet. They deserve better, and today’s decision is a missed opportunity to support those who need it most.”

So yeah, Kamala lies.

110 And a passage from Nehemiah 4:18-20! offers encouragement:. Note in my Bible says:

Accomplishing any large task is tiring. There are always pressures that foster discouragement - the task seems impossible , it can never be finished or too many factors are working against us. The only cure for disappointment is focusing on God's purposes. Nehemiah reminded the workets of their calling , their goal and God's protection . If you are overwhelmed by an assignment , tired and discouraged , remember God's purpose for your life and his special purpose for the project. Look for devout and prayerful leaders and fellow workers. Encourage them as they are driven by God's purposes. Then give yourself wholeheartedly to completing the project

The '49, I've read, was considered a leap forward in engineering and design for Ford, the best they'd produced since the '40. Of course there had been no '43-'45 models, and the '46-'48 were basically the same design as the '40. So almost anything would have looked good after almost a decade with no really new models. Still, hindsight says the '49 was a standout.

Ford pardons Nixon | September 8, 1974

wikipedia:

The Nixon pardon was a pivotal moment in the Ford presidency. Historians believe that the controversy was one of the major reasons that Ford lost the election in 1976, and Ford agreed with that observation.

Back in darkest Africa there was a limit on the number of years one could spend on a M.Sc. or Ph.D. I seem to remember 3 and 6 years respectively. After that one had to quit or start all over again on something else. Heck in 10 years the project supervisor may have moved on to greener pastures such as Harvard, since it's Education.

Well, you cut the run Linux Mint with Windows 11 in a virtual machine off recommendation off at the legs, so nothing there.

But I'd pull my own eyes out of their sockets just to have something beat you with for considering Apple.

So I would just go with a Windows 11 box from Costco or something and be done with it. And this is after a night of MS frustration of fighting Word autoformatting just to get a work product out the door. That's how much you should avoid Apple, unless you are looking to burn money.
