Ach, Werner has missed the film thread. This is tragic and disheartening. No offense to the ONT, which is most excellent, but the cinematic muse has been my lifelong obsession, except for a brief period touring with the hip-hop collective Wu Tang Clan, a midwestern crime spree with Ayn Rand, a brief period on Iron Chef as Chairman Kaga's Iron Chef Kraut, a battle to the death with the execrable Guy Fierri atop Niagra Falls (the loathsome worm survived somehow), a stint with SCTV made memorable by a tempestuous romance with the fiery ginger Catherine O'Hara, as well as...ach, there is not enough time.
Of Orson Welles, what can Werner say, except that if you watch Citizen Kane with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon playing in the background, it is clear that the album was crafted to synchronize with the events onscreen. That is a wonderment, and Werner is now realizing at this very moment that it was The Wizard of Oz, and also that he who told us that, Bob Costas, was hitting the peyote rather intensely. Werner's real query here is why his body of work has not yet received any critique here? Werner is here, after all, and what is he, chopped liver? Braunschweiger? Ach. The cost of extraction, given Siberian conditions, on the other hand... Posted by: Miss Lindsey! at September 07, 2024 10:31 PM (uxCna) It's not even the Siberian problem. That just means operating costs there are higher, so a resource has to richer than one in downtown Texas. What they are talking about in Ukraine is mostly hypothetical resources, or "inferred resources". We don't know for certain it is there (except for a lot of coal), but elsewhere in the world, rocks of similar age are know to host X amount of various mineral resources, so a reasonable inference is that Ukraine does, too. A mining engineer, a prospector, and a stock promoter are driving through the mountains. The prospector says, "Look, there's a goat on that mountain!" Why are the unemployment numbers low? Because these people aren't on unemployment insurance which is what the numbers the FNM claims for how many people are unemployed come from. This is why not even Elon has plans to go drag an all-gold or all-rare metals asteroid out of the Asteroid Belt into Earth orbit, to mine it and make a billion trillion gadzillion dollars profit. First you have to find such an asteroid, then... PROFIT! I remember a SF Novel, the one about aliens wanting maple syrup, had a minor plot point that mining the asteroid isn't actually trivial either.
Posted by: 18-1 at September 07, 2024 11:12 PM (oZhjI) Well, it would seem that many asteroids are high-grade nickel iron, something like 60% solid metal, since we have found many meteorites of similar composition. If you could find an asteroid of such composition, and move it into an Earth orbit, then maybe you could de-orbit it and have it crash into a desolate area of Earth at a low enough speed that you didn't get a huge extinction event, but have enough there to mine for decades. Vernon Vinge had an interesting idea, that from the cores of ancient stars that went nova, there may be chunks of diamond floating around interstellar space that are many miles across. Pop astronomy has mentioned a few diamond heavy planets in the past. I assume this is mostly pop with very little astronomy but...somewhere there are likely planets with large diamonds. Star cores if you could find one would be unlikely to be particularly carbon heavy - iron would be more likely since that is when normal stellar fusion stops. If you're going to publish vituperative, borderline defamatory invective about an organization on your site's masthead menu, it should at least be a competitor - "About SpiceCo," or some such.
"The only thing that smells worse than SpiceCo spices is their business practices. SpiceCo dumps spices on the US market to run down local businesses like Pansy's Spices, your go-to spice manufacturer for LGBTQ+ people who are looking to cook up something delicious. Like Biktarvy. But enough about business. Pansy's is always about the 'bottom line,' but we're so much more than that. We're about love. Love is love. And more love. But love isn't about slavery, unlike SpiceCo. SpiceCo enslaves thousands of Indonesian children in its inhuman mines, mercilessly harvesting the next ounce of pepper and cloves from the sweat of their weary little brows. Pansy's Spices might not taste as good as SpiceCo's... But at least they're not blood spices." Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at September 08, 2024 12:53 AM (0FoWg) 502

And FL. FL is particularly terrified of a flood of PR migrants after statehood. It would fuck their shit up completely.

Well, my eyelids are becoming heavy. Time for a snooze. Night, Horde.

It would be hilarious if everyone in PR went to sleep arguing about statehood like every other day, and woke up to find their asses had been sold to Uzbekistan or somebody.

I plowed through hundreds of comments tonight, looking for news of Pookygirl's progress. Got a little bleary here, wondered if I had missed an update.
Finally realized I could just search on "by: pooky". Amusing discussion of possible names, especially the Biblical ones. The Horde is always so full of the will to be of helpful service! Nobody suggested "Esther"? Gotta check out for the night. Prayers for pookygirl's successful delivery. Welcome new one; you're the future. https://youtu.be/Y0Yg9wjctRw G'nite, y'all. To put it another way: if you imposed US taxes and regulations on PR, you might as well just drop a nuke on the island - it would destroy it just as effectively, without all the refugees.

Everyone enjoying this lovely weather?
Posted by: AlaBAMA at September 07, 2024 09:55 Yes indeed. I sat on our porch and just enjoyed the world where we live. Nights are cool here for a few days, the crickets were chirping, a silver of the moon in the sky, I just took a moment to enjoy the natural world. At the corner 3 neighborhood boys were coming home after their bike ride, you could tell they had fun. I greeted Preston, next door neighbor and said it looks like you guys had a nice bike ride. He said yes, then I cautioned him...you need something reflective on your bike if you are going to ride when it is this dark. He replied with some kind of agreement as I wondered how I became the old man next door cautioning the young kids when it seems like yesterday, I was one of those kids. And FL. FL is particularly terrified of a flood of PR migrants after statehood. It would fuck their shit up completely.
Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice Got that right. At least right now they are being flooded by retirees and refugees up the I-95 and I-75 corridors bringing their bucks and inflation with them... which at least adds to the tax receipts vs welfare costs. Inflation sucks though. Welfare and tax increases may be more cost effective vs infaltion. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at September 08, 2024 02:13 AM (/lPRQ) 561
