Friends having fun together.

Guy tries going around-the-world on a swing. Will he make it? (IG)

The secret to being a Master Thief is just patience plus distraction.

Nodding with your bunny.

Dog likes his brand new dog-bed. I bet the cat will like it even more when he takes it over.

ICYMI: Lazy cat rides a Roomba to make trouble.

Anyone afraid of snakes? This guy's not, even when he should be.

Hypnotic water slide.

Cat's eye view of a mama cat teaching her kittens to go up and down the stairs.

Aw -- mama deer seeks help for her fawn, which is caught in a wire fence, and gets the help she needs. Update: Robert says there's a community note saying this is fake. So many of these animal videos turn out to be fake! Usually my BS radar works better.

Advantage: Parakeets.

141 I do recall History classes touched on this a little bit. As I recall, and this corroborates with what others here have noted, it's OK to talk about flaws of Churchill, but .... He pretty much saved Europe is the consensus view.

It is important to at least recognize what alternative ideas are - and what others think, so at least you can formulate a coherent response or rebuttal I suppose.

Prior to WWII, bombing civilian targets wasn't done, at least not on purpose as a main campaign. "Unconditional Surrender" wasn't very popular either. Now I think there is or was some controversy on "who started what", vis a vis a failed air raid on Coventry?

In any case this was a kind of new kind of warfare - where the civilian population is targeted. The Germans were considered very unsporting for using Submarines to sink surface vessels. What a bunch of assholes - hiding under the water, instead of fighting like iron men on wooden ships.

Another thing that radically changed that I hadn't thought about or noticed really - but I bet they did - during World War I the US government had to pay royalties to the German government because of a patent dispute on service rifles. True story.

161 After Germany surrendered in WWII there was no such property rights reciprocity.

In fact, on the idea of "technological reparations" the US hoovered up about eleventy gazillion tons of documents on all manner of their industry, and of course hundreds of top rocket scientists and the rest of it. But the size and scope went far beyond just rockets and weapons, it really gave the US a shot in the arm. I understand exactly why the American government did that, but it must have been a huge blow to the postwar Economy. Great Britain for their part was practically bankrupted by the war. They actually had to "mine" their coinage - made of silver - to pay back the Lend Lease loans. And then started circulating slugs. Rationing didn't end until 1954.

Anyway the policy of unrestricted bombing, it was certainly controversial then as well as now, but was considered the "best" way to get a war over. Hm. I'm not sure if there were any formal protests or Hague conventions or whatever.

In any case this was a kind of new kind of warfare - where the civilian population is targeted.”

It was actually the return of the old kind of warfare, back to the times when a conquering army would lay waste to a city once they breached the walls.

The reason this was able to disappear for a couple of centuries after the Tresty of Westphalia, the European Royalty viewed their subjects as tradeable commodities, valuable assets that you didn’t want to destroy over a dispute with their neighbor. And as for the people, living under one king was much like living indecent other.

Now we’re back to wars of peoples vs people’s , and those are always wars of annihilation.

239 Helium is a side product of natural gas and oil drilling, and only in certain areas, AOP probably knows which ones. During WWI I believe Zeps used Hydrogen.

Zeps were hard to shoot down, bullets would make them leak, but it was hard to make them pop or catch on fire.
One of the anti-zep weapons was a giant sparkler that had a lance head on it that the pilot or the gunner was supposed to toss over side of the plane to land on top of the zep and catch any leaking hydrogen on fire.
The French developed an incendiary bullet from the old Gras cartridge to shoot zeps down from the ground, the Gras was 11mm and had room for the cartridge. The main target though were the aerostats that were used to aim artillery.

THE TUCKER OP: A FOOTNOTE
I want to add a footnote to my comments here and hereon Tucker Carlson’s interview with Darryl Cooper. The proposition that Tucker is only asking questions as a journalist is a meretricious falsehood. Tucker introduces Cooper as the world’s greatest historian. You may not be familiar with Cooper’s views — I was pleased never to have heard of him — but Carlson is. As anyone who pays the price of shedding brain cells to listen to the video will discover, Carlson agrees with Cooper. He isn’t just asking questions. He seeks to promote Cooper’s views.

They both present as an exhibit in willfully ignorant stupidity or, as I believe, something worse. Tucker is not a disinterested bystander or seeker. Anyone who contends otherwise is inattentive or full of it.

It gets really tiresome, when people define who you are, either by who you talk to, or your unwillingness to suck in their narrative whole.

Cooper doesn't just recite the narrative, so he's going to be accused of all sorts of things. The same things everyone else who doesn't just recite the narrative gets accused of.

351 Ja, now is the time when the refresh key is given a work-out, so that the firsting of the first shall be first. Or second, or top ten, maybe? Werner observes that the Eiger features in this cafe, which is both joyous and sad. The joyous is the forgotten Eastwood flick, The Eiger Sanction, which was a gem of a movie, with an academic moonlighting as a government assassin. This is surprisingly fun, and co-stars the demure maiden George Kennedy.

The sad? Ach, it is set in Switzerland and features the Swiss. This is a travesty. Werner reminds you that the only virtue of the Swiss is that they are not Austrians, and that is only by dint of their not trying. Be not deceived by their Ricolla pandering, nor their cuckoo clocks and chocolates. Their cross-hairs are on your wallet, and your IRA. They are annoying gnomes, the Vern Troyer of the Germanic world.

Not the holocaust, no. Except that he's pointed out the British basically invented the concentration camp.

You're also supposed to only say the Germans were completely evil, and you're not allowed to try to understand how and why they would do something as evil as they did. You're just supposed to say it's evil, and leave it at that.

The guy's whole philosophy, when studying historical events, is to to try to understand the people, not to just start with judgment, because, no matter how sincere one is about it, if you start by judging someone, you can't be objective.

And that's not acceptable to some people.

359 A big change in the accepted discourse, it used to be, when discussing the Soviet Union for example, a knowledgeable individual could lay out the perspective from the Soviet side. Kremlinology, or trying to figure out what they were going to do, when they were an opaque society and information difficult to get. Strategy and tactics.

But one would not be accused of being a Communist simply by understanding how the Soviets viewed the global situation.

When the invasion of the Ukraine happened, a simple restatement of the Russian position or anything like that is simply Not Allowed. It's really super Orwellian in that regard. It's as if people are unable to grok that an historian doesn't necessarily agree with what is happening, or the reasons that precipitate a conflict or anything.

there is a problem here, though. If this is the one thing that short-circuits all discussion then it can be used to hide a lot of bad behavior and a lot of associated guilt.
because we focus on Hitler, who after all has been dead for more than 70 years, as a unique monster, then we can ignore the massive deaths that the US elites want to ignore, from the pro-soviets hiding the Homodolor, to the Komintern in Spain purging all the Anarchists, to the purges in the Warsaw Pact, to the Cultural Revolution and the Khmer-Rouge.
If the death camps in Germany were the worst things ever and the pretext for a global war, why did we not get stuck into Stalin, or Mao, or Pol Pot where the body count was higher?
The founding mythos of the American Empire is that we fought evil and this is our reward, and we must always fight evil. The real question is, is the mythos real, is the task fair, do we actually do it, and is there another purpose or cause of the US supremacy?
could be.

all history is revisionism. That is what it does, if it is honest.
What you are saying is that the Holocaust was the worst thing ever and no research that says anything different is valid, and must be rejected.

I am not minimizing the death, but it would be nice to have some actual facts on why it happened, perhaps to have tools to avoid it in the future. This sort of thing happens time and time again, I would like for it to stop. To make it stop, it is important to understand it on a level different than "this happens because some people are evil an it is the way of the world, we are powerless to change the world"
