Imagine a giant game controller stamping on a human face -- forever!
What a way to start a work week, but here we are. Evening and morning to all you early risers and late toilers! It's hot outside and I gotta go work out. On the good side, the bridge I take home from work every day now has all its lanes open, so I may make decent time today even at rush hour. I've always gotten a slightly creepy feeling about the Rust Witnesses I've read from time to time at Hacker News... they seem to think that security is just a matter of reimplementing c programs in rust a little bit at a time without thinking about the program or the algorithm or anything like that.
I'd like to be able to use linux without it becoming a stupid mutated post-unix kludge made up of wayland running on top of systemd.... Posted by: Thing From Snowy Mountain at September 03, 2024 04:26 AM (+9Xmi) 11
...and that's all I have to say for now. My sleep schedule is scrambled, I'll check back later, I want to try to get something done tomorrow morning.

Mules are quite intelligent animals. Smarter than horses, many say, including my father. Me, again I don't know nuttin', but that's what I've heard those that do say. Mules are indeed stuborn, but they just need someone who knows what they're doing. A mule whisperer. That's their intelligence. Remind me one ONT to tell you the story of my paternal side great-uncle Walter and his two mules. Uncle Walter was my Daddy's uncle. He was a contrarian extraordinaire. Loved to argue. Uncle Walter met his Waterloo late one night/early morning. His barn caught fire. Uncle Walter did battle with that fire. He saved his two beloved mules, trapped in that barn, but he didn't make himself. They found Uncle Walter's remains in the ashes the next day. He saved his mules, but fell in the battle himself. He went out with his boots on in a blaze of glory. Indeed. Still playing early Sunday mornings on MeTV. Darren also played "Vic Fontaine" one Deep Space Nice. Another memorable character. They say in the writing, "Vic" was a stupid, but James Darren's acting the character made it good. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at September 03, 2024 05:14 AM (w6EFb) 22
See an episode of the Beverly Hillbillies where Granny got in a staring contest with a mule. The mule will always win. The secret is to let the mule win, but in a way that you want. Daddy knew how to do that. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at September 03, 2024 05:16 AM (w6EFb) 23
What do you mean, the future of gaming depends upon discord? To the extent that I was aware of gaming's future, starting with Gamergate, the past, present and future of gaming has been nothing but discord. Just like everything else these days. Evening and morning again, all! I'm back from my workout, which -- despite the local station saying heat index was 93 -- was pretty good. We're due for "heavy rain" tomorrow through at least Friday, so I'm glad I got a workout in today.
With any luck, the rain will cause cancellation or rescheduling of the evening reception I have to attend tomorrow! Here's hoping! Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at September 03, 2024 05:36 AM (omVj0) 30
BOING! Who at Telsa came up with the name and acronym? If any of Elon's firms would use BOING! as an acronym (I thought when I first saw the BOING!), it would be SpaceX folk derisively referring to anything Boeing and its now legendary ability to create flying clunkers. Update on the Killer Kittenz From Outer Space: Stirling has wolfed his breakfast, as usual, and is sprawled on the floor looking evil, which he is not. Dagny La Siberienne turned up her little blunt nose at the Whole-Hearted grain-free dry food I mixed with their Friskies wet chow. After a while I gave in and put down the small bowl of dry food they munch on during the day. Surprise on her: Half of it is the grain-free stuff.

The missus and I are in the midst of a day long fracas that started with her telling me that I ought to have worked on preparing my monthly financial report for a board (due Wednesday) when she had absolutely no idea about the delivery schedules of monthly sourcing reports that I use to create that report (i. e., those will start coming out on the third day of a month). It went downhill from there. gSon starts school today and gDaughter visits with us -- she starts school tomorrow. Both they and I resume Cub Scout meetings tonight. That came up one week earlier than I expected (we meet in a school building), but then I recalled that the gKids' school appeared to be the only one around here that did not restart until after Labor Day. There's dumb, and then there's Juan Williams dumb: https://is.gd/P89zMk Posted by: I am the Shadout Mapes, the Housekeeper You extend a kindness to an idiot, as was done for Juan by Fox News when NPR gave him the old heave ho, but you oughtn't expect that idiot to continue to be anything but an idiot afterward. from the Juan Williams article That is yet another opinion piece written by a statist, and written in crayon, that was delivered to The Hill. It would be cute to admire and attach to its author's refrigerator with a magnet, but then you recognize that that author thought that they were being "super cereal, you guys", so you just shake your head and mentally kick yourself in the pants for ever having considered that you were receiving an opinion from a capable and thoughtful adult. To understand the Rust fight, you have to understand that Rust is C for stupid people.
The Rust developers don't understand C, and the C developers (especially in the Linux kernel) have nothing but contempt for the Rust developers, because they think they are stupid. The fight seems weird to me. Java has survived for years by simply assuming that the Linux kernel does not exist -- and that, if it does exist, then it must be unimportant. I don't know why the Rust developers can't cope the same way. Unix has always been written in C, and the C language was created to write Unix. Unfortunately, it looks like even the Microsoft developers aren't egotistical enough to think they could rewrite the Linux kernel in Rust, but we all would like to see them try!
