Top Story

Bluesky Social has seen record levels of user signups after the Brazilian Communist Party banned Twitter. (Tech Crunch)

The depravity here is threefold:

First, a psychotic judge in Brazil violated the country's laws in pursuit of, well, violating the country's laws some more.

Second, the banning of Twitter only rated an "in brief" item on Tech Crunch, while this full article is spinning it as a win for a favoured site (as in, not connected to Emmanuel Goldstein).

Third, this message from Bluesky's CEO:
good job Brazil, you made the right choice
This is rather like Belgium congratulating Germany on choosing to invade Poland and not, well, Belgium.

Tech News

The much maligned Chinese adventure game Black Myth Wukong has declined from an all time peak of 2.4 million players to a high for the past 24 hours of 1.4 million with a little over one million playing right this second.

Meanwhile the highly praised game Dustborn has 13.

Not 13 million. 13.

And some of those - I can't tell exactly how many, but with just thirteen people playing even one is significant - are vtubers playing the game to show how bad it truly is.

But as I noted before, there's more difference between these two games than the fact that Black Myth Wukong tries to appeal to its audience and Dustborn wants to see gamers dead in a ditch. Wukong had a real budget, while Dustborn survived off government handouts.
But those aren't the only two games that have launched recently. There's also Concord.

Concord is an online team-based combat game, very much in the style of Overwatch. You get together with four friends and shoot it out against another team of five friends. Digital paintball.

If you don't have five friends who all want to play Concord right this moment, you can go to the lobby and match up with other players looking for a game.

And this is where the pain arrives because there are 81 people playing Concord right now. In the entire world.

So if there are 8 matches going on, there is one person just sitting there, waiting.

But it's just an indie game, right? It might be struggling, but it will grow over time.

Not exactly. It's published by Sony and has been in development for eight years, with an estimated budget between $100 million and $200 million. So they spent more than a million dollars per player.

And a game that depends on having a lot of active players to survive, that has fallen into just double digits a week after launch, is dead. Even making it free is not going to fix this.

The problem is the game looks like a cross between Overwatch and Guardians of the Galaxy... That you found on a dusty shelf in the back of a Dollar Tree, made in China by way of Berkeley.

Oh, and just to rub it in, it costs $40 where Overwatch is free to play. Overwatch makes money by selling custom outfits for your characters, which works because the characters are attractive. There's fanart and cosplays of Overwatch characters everywhere because the designs are great.

While the pre-rendered cut scenes in Concord look good - you can see where the money went - there's no reason to watch them because the character design and gameplay are, at best, meh.
Meanwhile on the indie side of things Core Keeper launched on the 27th of August after a couple of years in early access (open beta test).

It has 33,000 players right now. I couldn't find any reviews from the propaganda outlets fluffing Dustborn and Concord, but the reviews from the smaller outlets that have not yet sold their souls are uniformly positive.
And in the as-indie-as-it-gets category is Soulash 2, a labour of love by a single developer, currently still in beta.

He's been targeted lately by the alphabet soup mafia, demanding he put same-sex marriage into the game, and bombing the game with bad reviews when he said he was focusing on other features right now. He didn't even refuse, he just said not now.

As a result of the constant attacks, the game... Has more players than Dustborn and Concord combined. Where those games bled to death over the course of last week, Soulash 2 grew by 60%.
There's also Star Wars Outlaws, another big budget game with some great scenery that plays like a potato with brain damage, but it only just came out and it's not on Steam so there's an absence of hard data.

It's probably just an ordinary level flop, rather than a Concord-class catastrophe. But it's being fluffed by all the same outlets as Concord and Dustborn which may be the kiss of death.
They even tried to fluff the Borderlands movie. (The Verge)

Borderlands - a movie based on a computer game that was not complete garbage - had a budget of $120 million and made $30 million at the box office. So the verdict on that one is definitely in.

For some reason I didn't grab it instantly but made plans to drive back in the early morning and toss it in the trunk of my car.

Then my croissant had turned to a black cup with some juice in it. I went back in and asked a woman staffer, who was sitting doing nothing in a busy shop, if she could give me a go-cup with the remainder. She said, "No." Me: "Not even a paper cup?" "No."

Instead of pouring it on the floor, I plunked the cup down on a counter and walked out. Then I woke up.

MadameM, I've been researching moving to the Evansville area. That and the very northwestern corner of the state, around Gary I think, are Central; everything else, like Indianapolis and Terre Haute, is Eastern.

Our visit to the suburban restaurant famous for its charbroiled oysters went much better than I expected. We got there about nine, and the place was well attended but not crowded. We were served promptly and cheerfully by an older lady. An oyster omelette for Miss L., a ham & cheese one for me, with a "jumbo" biscuit for each of us. This thing is big: Put your index fingers and thumbs together to form a circle, and that's about the size.

I paid ($51! Coffee was $3 bloody 95!) via card right at the table and left her a $10 cash tip. Very nice. Perhaps I'll go back on a cool or cold Saturday and have one of their other items.

52 Yes Wolfus . The state allowed certain areas to stay on central time because of being so intertwined with central zone. Gary is tied to Chicago and Evansville is tied to.... Somewhere in Illinois. Lots of business with those areas so central works better for them. It seems stupid to me but I'm just a hick from the sticks in southern Indiana. I'm about an hour north of Evansville if one is driving on I-69. Never spent much time there, though. They do have a nice zoo and a museum that has history and art.

I hope to join you soon. I dream of being in the sticks, though I'll admit I'd like to have a metro area within a short drive for access to groceries, car work, and medical things if needed. First I'd planned to retire last November; then this past May; then at the end of Sept. Right now, if Trump wins, I'm going to wear a dark blue suit, white shirt, and red tie to work, and go in to tell my boss I'm retiring in a month, let's start looking for my replacement.

Maybe I can drive up to Evansville (it's only a 2-day drive) in Oct. and look around for real instead of on Gorgle Street View.

Thanks, SFp. Miss Linda gave me a hand soap dispenser in the form of a seated black cat like my Stirling, and a black-and-white checked storage box. I've found most of my paraphernalia for pipe smoking (pipe wax, pipe stem oil, etc.) fit nicely into it. But my gift to myself was the breakfast and the inexpensive purchase of a new pipe leaf.

A progression bug is what it has been called. But simply it becomes impossible to advance any further in the game. So one has to start over.

But wait there could be more drama since Ubislop still has Assassin's Creed: Shadows due to be released. As if this game needs any more drama but it will happen.

And opposed to Dustbin, Ubislop has literally spent hundreds of millions of dollars on both games.

Eh, I'm not sure it's a good idea. My FiL used to do that, and then we had fertility issues. On the flip side, Pooky's sister had 3 kids and we had had one when we started having issues and he shut up after that. People are more honest these days about their struggles with having kids, so you might be told to buzz off if they have issues.

I get one of those e-mails about every month. I don't have, nor have ever had, a McAfee subscription for any of their products.

I also get those bogus "your shipment is ready" e-mails that want me to authorize a credit card payment. For something I've never bought.

Lastly, I got several legit e-mails telling me my social security number was compromised. No kidding. So was 300-some odd other numbers too. Which made me wonder why some entity other than the social security administration would have most every American's SS number in a database. That got hacked.

Sometimes you will get something like mixed memory sticks from different mfg, etc.

The big players, Lenovo, HP, and Dell usually have spare parts but more importantly bios updates, etc and even tech manuals for free download. Intel in most of them and they do support their motherboards.

Recently picked up a Lenovo coffee lake era Intel computer for 99 bux, added 32 gig of matched memory, and a cheap 1 tb 3rd generation m2 drive. That brought cost up to 220 or so. Use it for scanning photos and documents before shredding the paper copies. Still has windows 10 which works w two corporate level scanners, one for fotos and the other for documents. Both self feed. Neither have drivers for windows 11.

There was also a game called Battleborn, same idea. 5v5, individual matches, unique characters (heroes) with different abilities that you use as a force multiplier for your team. It launched in 2016. It died at the start of 2021, less than 5 years. And since it was Online, even the single-player content can't be played.

A big problem with gaming right now is that there's been a major push to being online, pushing constant updates ("Live" service), and being multiplayer. Follow-the-leader, thanks to big names like Call Of Duty, Overwatch, Fortnite, and others that apparently make billions upon billions. But those games, kind of like Amazon.com, won the luck of the draw; you can't just repeat their steps and get their victory, because they are already crowding the finish line.

And gamers only have so much money and time. Moreso if they're social gamers that want to play with friends. If a friend has only enough money for 1 game, that's the only one that friend group can play - the lowest-common-denominator of gaming.
