Tonight's Game ![]() I realize that you'll have to post the results on an image site of your own, but give it a try. Some of them don't work at all, naturally. I got this for the Wiki page, this for the quote, and you can see the picture below. I can see this as an actual album. ![]() Jesus News Scientists make startling discovery after analysing cloth 'Jesus was buried in' A controversial linen shroud - regarded by some to be the one Jesus was buried in - has baffled the world for more than centuries. When it was first exhibited in the 1350s, the Shroud of Turin was touted as the actual burial shroud used to wrap the mutilated body of Christ after his crucifixion. Also known as the Holy Shroud, it bears a faint image of the front and back of a bearded man, which many believers is Jesus' body miraculously imprinted onto the fabric But research in the 1980s appeared to debunk the idea it was real after dating it to the Middle Ages, hundreds of years after Christ's death. Now, Italian researchers who used a new technique involving x-rays to date the material have confirmed it was manufactured around the time of Jesus about 2,000 years ago.I always find it interesting how eager humans are to debate “proof” of something that represents an article of faith. Inflation What Kamala Harris Doesn’t Get About Food Costs Last week in North Carolina, Kamala Harris called for a new federal law to ban “price gouging on food.” Such a law might be popular, but it would have, at best, no impact on grocery prices and might even make the problem worse. That’s especially unfortunate because it distracts from all the federal policy changes that actually could reduce food prices. The evidence that price gouging was responsible for the post-pandemic spike in food prices is somewhere between thin and nonexistent. A recent report from the New York Federal Reserve found that retail food inflation was mainly driven by “much higher food commodity prices and large increases in wages for grocery store workers,” while profits at grocers and food manufacturers “haven’t been important.” Similarly, a 2023 report from the Kansas City Fed observed that rising food prices were overwhelmingly concentrated in processed foods, the prices of which are more sensitive to (and thus driven by) labor-market tightness and wage increases. Grocery profits did rise briefly during the pandemic, but the increase was the predictable result of increased demand (thanks to government stimulus along with more Americans eating at home) running headfirst into restricted supply (thanks to pandemic-related closures and supply-chain snarls, along with the war in Ukraine, a major food producer). In fact, expanding corporate profits frequently accompany bouts of heightened demand and inflation; the past few years have been no different.I can't say I'm amazed by the economic ignorance of people setting economic policy anymore, but I am still disappointed that more people don't realize it. If we had an investigative press, maybe things would be different. On The Election Where the Race to Save America Is Right Now There are a lot of doomsayers out there who think it’s all over and we can’t possibly win. Republicans are used to Republicans failing, so it’s not totally unjustified. There’s nothing wrong with a little paranoia, and there’s nothing wrong with being concerned. We should be concerned. Kamala absolutely can win. But the correlation of fundamentals is in favor of Trump. The economy is a disaster. Our foreign policy is putting us all at risk. Our borders are wide open. Criminals are running the streets. Perverts are wiggling their grody whatevers in the faces of our kids. This is all Democrat policy. All this is poison to normal people. Look, this can’t be a normal race because there’s no normal media environment. The media is entirely and unrepentantly dedicated to electing Kamala Harris and will do everything it can to make that happen. It will not call her out. It won’t even demand that she talk to them. Instead, it will magnify and expand lies about Trump and JD shamelessly. So, you can’t run a 1996 campaign or a 2000 campaign. That world doesn’t exist. It’s got to be an insurgency campaign; luckily, that’s what Trump’s doing.I'm fairly confident that DJT can get beyond the margin of error over the next two months. I'm not confident that he can overcome the margin of fraud in November. Idiots In The News People Who 'Raw-Dog' Long Flights Are 'Idiots' The latest unnecessary hack is called "raw-dogging," and despite the term's sexual origins (Google it), {Note: Do not Google it – WD} it now refers to doing a task without preparation, protection, or anything that would make it easier or go more smoothly. Raw-dogging is brought to us by Generation Z, the same whiz kids who brought us the Tide Pod challenge, NyQuil Chicken, and the Dunk-Your-Junk-In-Soy-Sauce challenge. And like all these other so-called challenges, this one could kill you as well. Except it involves doing nothing. Nothing at all. Let's say you were going on a long flight or even a car trip. If you were an average traveler like me, you would take a book, charge your phone, load a few books on your Kindle, download your favorite podcasts, get a backup book, and then pack two more books, just in case. But someone who is raw-dogging their trip won't do any of those things. No music, no reading, no podcasts, no phone, no in-flight entertainment, nothing. They don't do anything to break up the monotony. That also means no food, no water, and no bathroom breaks. They won't even get up and move around. They sit there, staring straight ahead, watching the flight map on the seatback screen, and claim they're using the "power of the mind" to power through it.Hey, long flights suck. Whatever gets you through. But the rest of us will point at you and laugh to get ourselves through. High Cost Of Pranking Prankster suspended from $20K-a-year school after he drenched boaters with milk in viral stunt What goes around comes around, and this kid found out quickly. A young prankster was suspended from his $20,000-a-year school amid a weeks-long investigation after he drenched a group of women with milk during their boat ride on Jan. 27. The 16-year-old unnamed Australian boy was handed a “combination of suspension and other punitive action, reparation, apologies and counseling,” in the wake of the viral stunt, which has been viewed more than 32.6 million times, according to the Herald Sun.I despise all of these people who do “pranks” for internet cred, but this one was pretty mild, I've seen people doing truly dangerous stuff like actually pretending to attack people (this seems to happen a lot less frequently in states with liberal concealed carry laws, for some reason). Frankly if someone brandishes a knife at an innocent and gets shot for their trouble, I'm all for it. But at the end of the day, he's only 16 and all he did was dump milk on them. Getting suspended from school is about the right punishment. It should be for the rest of the semester and he should be left behind his classmates. That's pretty stiff punishment for a 16 year old. Frampton was an interesting thing in rock history. Originally he was beloved by cutting edge music types. Then he put out a bunch of albums that people generally ignored. Then he put out a live album with those same songs played the same way and sold a zillion. Then he tried to be a heartthrob for young girls, bombed, and went back to being sort of a cult figure that toured for decades. Not a common path.

So completely OT but I had a realization recently.
VTubers. Pixie has posted them. Chicks with cute voices speaking behind cute anime characters while playing vidya games. I always kind of figured that while the fans of these things might imagine their intentions are pure I think the reality is they're lonely young dudes who find the characters sexually appealing. Pretty anime girl, actress with a coquettish voice. It's pretty easy to see through. And there is nothing more fucking boring than watching someone else play video games. I always imagined the women doing these things are older...well, they admit that readily...and probably weigh 200 pounds, are covered in sores and have really bad BO. Then it just hit me. VTubers are modern day phone sex operators for teenagers. Same kind of audience, same kind of women but not quite as lewd. More visuals, more big and bouncy anime tits so no need for obvious sex references. Posted by: Robert at August 29, 2024 10:25 PM (+zZ11) 91

Farwell had groomed Birchmore and engaged in a years-long sexual relationship with her from when she was just 15 and he was 27, according to court documents. Their relationship continued until the disgraced officer allegedly strangled Birchmore to death in 2021. She was 23 and had revealed that she was pregnant with his child, prosecutors claim. My first attempt gave me a band named "Roiate" releasing an album named "I Couldn't See It." And an album cover pic of a stone wall with an arch in it. And some relief carving and statuary. Then after the disastrous 4th Crusade and the sack of Constantinople, there are stories of the Templars having some cloth with face of Jesus that they venerated. Templars were annihilated in 1307; and about 50 years later some rural nobility in France reveals that they’ve got this really fascinating object in their private collection, with no explanation as to where they got it. Of course no one would have wanted to reveal that their family had once been high up in the now condemned Templars. Posted by: Tom Servo at August 29, 2024 11:05 PM (S6gqv) 237

Ever seen an experienced Tree Faller crew drop a tall pine in a crowded suburban neighborhood?
Yeah, they climb up, top the tree, limb in as they move down in 6 ft. sections. Then tie-off that bare 6ft to a block and tackle controlled by the ground crew, and cut that 6ft off, to be slowly lowered under the pulley. Lather, rinse and repeat till the tree has been reduced to it's last, tallest point, that'd pose no threat to nothin'. Only THEN, do the cut it at the trunk, and let it fall. I never believed the 'recent' dating of the Shroud. They knew it was patched after damage from a fire in the 14th (glancing at the excerpt above) century, and dated it to the 14th century, when you can look at it and clearly see that the patches are newer material than the rest.
It seems more likely to me that they dated the patches and just expected everyone to buy the "official" result. And stop wondering why anyone in the 14th century was doing 'art' that was more visible as a photographic negative. Posted by: Methos at August 29, 2024 11:23 PM (Dnobf) 283

Posted by: COMountainMarie at August 29, 2024 11:30 PM (t/dCd) Owning several cars with antique plates, yes you do get a break on plates and insurance. But you are pretty restricted on when and where you can drive. Daily driving is right out. Driving to work is a no-no, but you could probably get away with it if there was a cruise night someplace right after work. I have never had a cop stop me to ask why I was driving my XXXX at such and such a time and place; I doubt that is a priority for them. But if you have a wreck, and want to have the insurance pay out, it had better be while you were using the car in accordance with the policy. The John Denver thing was strange, the plane had been modified a bit, and had a small reserve tank switch that was moved or something like that. He wasn't sure where it was, and was occupied messing around with that inside the cabin. At the least not located in an accessible location.
Posted by: Nomenclature 2.01z at August 29, 2024 11:43 PM (eUFWN) IIRC, Denver's plane was a Rutan designed Long EZ, a homebuilt bought from the builder, and the builder relocated the tank switch valve, for reasons sufficient unto him. Denver ran out of fuel on the main tank, and wasted precious time trying to find the valve, instead of prepping to make a survivable water landing. As far as medieval stuff, the Voynich manuscript has puzzled a lot of people. Academics don't want to get involved with it, for reasons. It's written in a strange language, that looks like a real language and has a lot of hallmarks that are indicative of a real language. So it has attracted code-breakers, even some very good ones, going back at least since the 1940s. If anyone ever figured it out, they haven't said.

Posted by: Kindltot at August 29, 2024 11:48 PM (D7oie) If I wanted to scorch an image into a linen shroud, I would wet the linen, wring it out a little, and place it on a marble figure, well warmed by the Sun. Those parts directly touching the marble would begin to dry, while those not in contact with the marble would remain damp. That would set a latent image in the linen, defined by moisture content. Then, I would "develop" the image by passing a red-hot iron close to the fabric, but not touching it. The dry patches would scorch, and the moist ones would steam, and not scorch. Why would I do it? I think it is held at the Bennecke rare book library. It got to be the most requested. And then the nutbars started writing letters to Bennecke, explaining their theory on what the book was about, and what it really meant.
They actually published the book, at a reasonable cost, so people can get it for themselves, and hopefully leave them alone. My favorite story they relayed, a fellow in prison wrote Bennecke and claimed that it was he that wrote the Voynich manuscript, and was going to pick it up in person. I'm sure the volunteer librarians were thrilled to hear that! "So .... what do we do.. Um, I mean .... I'm calling security you guys!" Last I heard was that cryptanalysis indicates that there's no information there, and the text is just random junk. I'm not sure how that was determined, since a good cypher turns real plaintext into unstructured, completely random looking junk. My memory is the argument is that the language has less variation then real languages do. That makes a few assumption about what kind of encryption is actually used and what the text is supposed to say. For example if it was a group of even lightly encrypted mantras you'd expect a fairly low level of character variation. Their is a history of the book going back to the 1600s and the paper itself dates to the 1400s so I think it is reasonable to assume the book itself is old, even if in the end it is a fake of some sort. I ran the Peon Patent Metal Laundry today, and cleaned up up about 20 pounds of nuts and bolts and whatever. It's just an old cement mixer, driven by a third-horse electric motor. Dump the stuff into the drum, add a couple of gallons of water, and a cupfull of washing soda, and let it tumble for an hour or two. When that was done, I poured it off, and it was like a brown sudsy milkshake. Tumbled in clear water for a couple of minutes, and poured that off, and then grabbed handfuls of clean parts, swished them in a pail of clean water, and laid them on on a table in the sun to dry. Oil, grease, rust, dirt, and loose paint; they all come off. A little dirt or rust remains in deep crevices, but bolt thread are usable, as-is. And you can handle the parts, and your hands stay clean!

I wonder if perhaps he got hold of a real herbal, written in Chinese of Japanese, and transliterated the ideographs into an imaginary "alphabet"? The writings to seem to come from Tuscany...which makes sense for Etruscan writing and the time frame is right though right at the end of Etruscan independence from Rome. A wooden block would serve the same purpose. Posted by: Miley, okravangelist at August 30, 2024 12:31 AM (w6EFb) 405

Something that should be brought up, as an ad for Memberberries...
Remember that infant formula shortage? How mothers had problems feeding their babies? Literal babies, newborns, because there just wasn't any formula to be bought? I don't remember the prices being high. Just that there wasn't any to be bought. Maybe there was a black market of the stuff, but they probably spent more effort cracking down on those than they did getting the bureaucrats out of the way and get the factories making it again. This wasn't long ago, either. 2022? When did it actually end? Posted by: Another Anon at August 30, 2024 12:34 AM (QNMaY) 407

402 The Liber Linteus Zagrabiensis is written in Etruscan from 300BC or thereabouts on linen.
The writings to seem to come from Tuscany...which makes sense for Etruscan writing and the time frame is right though right at the end of Etruscan independence from Rome. If you want to get the tree out without felling it, you could use helicopter logging. Expensive, but quite safe. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 29, 2024 11:47 PM (unvNj) Helicopter logging is done for zero compaction reasons and to avoid erosion on the steeper hills. Bohemia had tried using blimps in the Coast Range where it is up and down and has heavy rains, but that was not a good solution for them. One of the local bird sanctuaries had a bright colored Chinook pulling logs out a couple of years ago. Posted by: gourmand du jour at August 30, 2024 12:54 AM (MeG8a) If you are doing it right, you scale the tree, and calculate its volume, and multiply by the known density of the wood species to get the weight of the log. At least some of those lines of eucalyptus trees in SoCal, I think, were planted along railroad rights of way, with the idea being to use their wood for sleepers. Turned out to be too soft, though. There used to be many such runs of eucalyptus in a line along roadways, and railroads, but can't think of any now.
One thing eucalyptus are good for, though, is as exploding firebombs during wildfires. Very dry, very oil-rich (drought tolerant adaptations). The obnoxious Mexican fan palms, otherwise infamous as rat nest penthouses, also blow up nicely in fires, but I think the eucalyptus are more spectacular and dangerous. I was involved with a friend who had staked a mountain top near Terrace, B.C. that has a ledge of massive sulfide ore, mostly copper with some silver and gold values. The scree slopes there are studded with football-size boulder of this stuff. You could gather it up into cargo nets, and fly it a mile downslope to the road, and drop it off, say a thousand pounds at a go. If it were 35% copper, at today's prices, that would pay $1400 per load. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 30, 2024 01:30 AM (unvNj) 502

I've seen that public course up there from the 5 a zillion times of course, but have never played it. One course I hope to get back to when certain body repairs are complete is at Camp Pendleton. Beautiful setting (gotta watch for rattlers during the late summer and fall), inexpensive, always in great condition when I played in 10 years ago. Best of all - the rumbling of artillery over the hills. Screaming fighters just overhead at the Miramar course are nice, but something soul-warming about actual artillery fire. I still think it's a crime that Taylor Swift got The Civil Wars on her song for The Hunger Games soundtrack, Safe and Sound, but didn't let Joy Williams heavily feature her voice. Probably because she knew it would overshadow her own. I was devastated when Civil Wars broke up. Joy's solo stuff wasn't as good. And I don't know what happened to Lorde. Loved her a lot. I bought a SATA docking port today and on an old hard drive found Hearts of Iron I and II, and Civ 3. I think Civ 3 was my favorite. I may have to play it again. I need to get an IDE-capable port so I can examine the at-least-4 old hard drives I kept all these years.

Again directed at no one in particular. Had an atheist leftard Karen tell me she doesn't believe in God but does think Jesus was a "really special guy".
Which I'm good with (for her) because an open door is better than a closed one. But I wondered to myself why she thought this special guy who had so much to teach the world was either a liar or deranged. Posted by: ... at August 30, 2024 02:34 AM (lX8VI) 548

Hey LL I did read your reply to me earlier (though much later) and I just wanted to wish you luck with this ummmm cratering relationship. My bustups were not over politics but it turns out that both people are now beyond insane leftards. That makes it even harder to reason with them and either way I'm certain you are not the responsible party even if you are imperfect. My sincere advice is don't expend too much outward energy on her. By all means pray but I wouldnt waste the energy on someone who is carrying that much animosity. I have been there and tried long ago multiple times to "fix" it. All they want is a punching bag and you don't want to play that at this point in your life. Misunderstandings are one thing. This isn't that. Posted by: ... at August 30, 2024 02:38 AM (lX8VI) 549
>>> All they want is a punching bag and you don't want to play that at this point in your life.
Yeah, I think so too. They are frustrated, and I've been that punching bag for them in the past on political issues. But I've grown a lot, and know that current me can't accept being that anymore. Letting someone go is easier said than done, though. They are so emotionally fragile, I'm not sure how they will survive another Trump term. But they won't want me to help them through it either. I keep hoping we are just at our Jefferson/Adams fighting phase, and one day we will reconcile and be there for each other in our older years, like they were. It's so hard to say if that will happen. Thanks for responding. Posted by: LizLem at August 30, 2024 03:06 AM (7V8BR) 550

Here is a chat regarding the shroud. Very long, but worth every minute.
https://tinyurl.com/mstu274b Fascinating stuff. The imprint on the shroud is very thin, so thin that even with todays technology we cannot replicate it. The blood on it is AB, same as the blood from various eucharistic miracles. Also,he discusses the issues with the dating. Posted by: Dandalo at August 30, 2024 03:31 AM (3QsZU) 555

Morning, insomaniacals! We are at last at The Friday, the day before a long-awaited three-day weekend!
Though I slept okay last night and even had a half-hour's "rest my eyes" nap yesterday afternoon, I'm debating going to work out. Nothing new about that, of course. So what's shakin'? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 30, 2024 03:56 AM (omVj0) 558
The 70s had colors like puce, and shag carpets
Posted by: Miklos survived Isn't that pronounced "puke"? Posted by: SFGoth at August 30, 2024 *** I read someplace that the word "puce" comes from pulex, the Latin word for "flea." And if you look closely at a flea from one of your cats, that's pretty much a "puce" color. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 30, 2024 03:59 AM (omVj0) 559
Never really knew what the color puce was. Looked it up. Purple-brown. Fall-ish colors. I can live with puce clothing.
