Wednesday Morning Rant

Second (Meta)verse, same as the first

Remember Google Glass? For those of you who don't, it was a product Google made back in the early teens. It was an "augmented reality" product. It was a pair of glasses that could project information in front of your eyes (a heads-up display, basically) and contained cameras and microphones. You could easily take pictures and videos with it and it integrated with your smartphone.

It was immediately rejected by the market, including in its home market of Silicon Valley. Even before the product was released, many public places - bars, nightclubs, etc. - preemptively banned it. It was seen, correctly, as a creepy and invasive privacy nightmare for people who happened to be around the product, but not in control of it. At least with a smartphone, you have to pull it out to take a picture. Way too many people found it way too creepy, for good reason. Google eventually made it into an "enterprise" product, and then discontinued it completely last year. They found the "creepy line."

So it should be utterly unsurprising that a couple of years ago, Meta - which owns Facebook, which uses the "creepy line" as an operational goal - decided to launch its own version of the product. Unlike Google Glass, Meta's "Metaverse" product doesn't have a heads-up display and so is much cheaper. It's just a pair of Ray-Bans with a couple of cameras, some microphones and speakers. So you can wander around and talk to your Meta apps to record the world around you. The product has been available for a little while, but I've recently seen a huge advertising push for it on multiple platforms. Now, apparently, is the time to flog it as hard as possible.

It solves precisely none of the privacy problems with Google Glass, and in fact makes them worse. Unlike its Silicon Valley cousin and most other "smartglasses," they don't look weird. It's not obvious that you're wearing them. Beyond being able to blend in effectively, they are also necessarily tied to Meta, which isn't exactly known for good privacy practices or being good stewards of user data.

Best of all, they can be used for live-streaming. The user can snap some pictures or 60-second videos, but the user can also use it as a real-time camera for live streams. It does apparently light up when in use, but the indicator is tiny and easily missed - especially if you don't know that it's a thing at all.

And it is also, of course, an extension of the "digital assistant" concept. There's no point if you have to fumble with buttons or pull out your phone to use it, and so it's voice-activated. Like any other "digital assistant," that means it's always listening. It isn't special in this regard, but it is among the worse expressions of the problem because it's mobile and public.

The Wikipedia page on it is funny in how similar it is to the page on Google Glass (linked above). Most of the same concerns are noted, with the same criticisms. None of it has been managed, none of it has been solved. The privacy problems are, in fact, unmanageable and unsolvable. The only reason it's not a significant problem in most places is that this is still, despite Meta's desires, a fairly niche product.

But a sexy, high-tech and invasive idea is rarely allowed to wither and die. "Smartglasses" are no different in this regard. The privacy-free, always-on, high-tech dystopia must be built. Be it "smartglasses" or always-listening digital assistants or Google's exhaustive dossiers on everyone on earth or Microsoft's Recall (old threads, etc.) or dreadful things not yet invented, you will be made to love the creepy line.

Yup. They do this anyway, in other venues. When Zuckerberg told Congress that Meta doesn't collect data from or track non-users, he was flat-out lying. They do, and it's trivial to detect it. Social media buttons embedded in websites drop cookies, and those cookies have unique identifiers. Even if you're not a user, they still have a dossier on you.

Most Congressmen are too ignorant to know how to ask the questions properly, and the rest know full well what is going on but are in the club.

20 I think that there can be a place for these smart glasses: manufacturing. For instance, if you have a trainee that needs training on a piece of equipment while they're in front of it, or if there is some on-the-spot troubleshooting that needs to be done on a machine in a factory or assembly line, it would be nice to get some feedback through your glasses and earpiece.

If you can compress a larger head's up display (HUD) to your glasses, that could be useful as well.

LOL. Remember when Sony's first-generation night-vision system in camcorders could, under certain conditions, make people look naked (or, rather, like they were wrapped in thin gauze)?

They fixed that toot sweet. But it was also a different time. Now, it would probably be based on AI image generation/derivation to just generate an "unclothed" version of a normal picture...

This was the premise behind the "Enterprise" version of Google Glass, per my understanding. And yes, it is a legitimate use for the technology.

A modern factory with tagged infrastructure could superimpose lots of useful information on a mobile HUD. Look up at the piping and see flow direction, valve locations, etc. "Augmented Reality" has some seriously interesting - and likely beneficial - operational implications for industry.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at August 28, 2024 11:09 AM (HnUIn)

31 As an output only device, a heads-up type display makes some sense. Having certain information always in your field of view makes sense. You no longer have to refocus on your wrist (a watch) or you hand (a phone) or even to the side (the map display on the dash).

But the idiots at Google had to put a camera on it, which changes it to an input device, and completely changes how it is used and perceived, hence the reaction to it.

34 Maybe a bit controversial take here, but I really like the idea of "augmented reality" pitched by Google glasses and such...I wouldn't purchase it now, though, because it's still clunky and limited.

Sure, there are privacy issues, but we're so digitally integrated, the privacy ship has sailed. But, if walking in another country, my glasses code translate signs in real time, highlight historical sites, guide me to my destination like a video game HUD? That would be awesome.

I'd even expect something like "private" or "stealth" mode. Alert me if a friend is nearby unless he's engaged the private mode to be left alone. To have a display identify someone talking to me would be great! I'm a fairly senior officer, and often have junior enlisted soldiers come up to talk to me that I served briefly with 15+ years ago. Instead of pretending to remember them, if their name and basic info was displayed, I might ACTUALLY remember them instead of awkwardly pretending.

AR has potential, especially in industry. It could even be useful in the real world. "I'm looking for a restaurant" becomes easier when it gets a bright green halo around it as you're walking down the street, for example.

But that doesn't mean the device needs camera and microphone arrays that impose serious privacy breaches on everyone around them by definition. AR as a display technology may well be useful, but that doesn't mean AR devices need to be privacy nightmares.

"Public" depends on definition. On the street? Yeah, no restrictions. Inside a structure, be it a business or a home? No. You need permission.

Geofencing is one possible solution to that problem. Cameras and microphones shut off when you walk through the door. Some high-security enterprises do this today. You don't have to check your phone, but you do need an app that controls inputs. When you cross the virtual "fenceline," your camera and microphone are blocked by software until you leave. The systems don't work spectacularly well yet, but they're getting there.

78 I always assume whenever I'm out in public I'm being recorded by something or other. At any kind of actual event? 100%

We had an exotic car event where the main guest was a very rich guy with a very rare and exotic car. He was to make a big entrance. He was of course going to be recorded.

Well, the guy is staged outside the event, waiting for the drive-in to start. He either didn't realize or forgot there were plenty of cameras on him even while stationary. The guy is just sitting there in the car . . . picking his nose like an animal. Like going real deep in there, like he was searching for the Holy Grail. All on video.

86 AR has potential, especially in industry.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at August 28, 2024 11:13 AM (HnUIn)

Well to get your augmented reality, the device will have to have a camera that sees what your eyes see, and then relates it a database that fills in what your eyes cannot see. So you are working in an oil refinery, wearing the device, and you look at an overhead pipe, and it is shown to you in bright flashing red, because it carries H2S at 1200 PSI, and you don't want to be drilling into that to hang your "Work Safely" poster.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 28, 2024 11:19 AM (On+XH)

87 "Public" depends on definition. On the street? Yeah, no restrictions. Inside a structure, be it a business or a home? No. You need permission.

--

Well, inside a home isn't public. Agreed.

A business on the other hand can be a gray area I think. If it's open to the public then that has implications over a private club. Permission is likely implied in the former case barring a sign or notice to the contrary.

Another example - absolutely legal to record video when you walk into a police station. But agree that the rulings likely need to be looked at in the face of this technology.

I read from some sort of reputable source years ago, that I sort of filed into memory as these things go, that every single phone call in the US that either originated or went overseas was recorded, on tape, and stored at some warehouse in Maryland or whatever.

They don't need to store anything on analog tape any longer, but they do build humongous computer servers where all the voice and video imagery goes through.

167 Ah, there it is.

Driving the news: In her speech to the Democratic National Convention last week, Harris said she would sign the recent bipartisan border security bill — which Trump had ordered his allies to kill, fearing it would help Democrats in the November elections.

That bill, negotiated by senators such as James Lankford (R-Okla.) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), requires hundreds of millions of dollars of unspent funds to be used to continue building a wall on the border.

"It requires the Trump border wall," Lankford told Axios. "It is in the bill itself that it sets the standards that were set during the Trump administration: Here's where it will be built. Here's how it has to be built, the height, the type, everything during the Trump construction."
Harris' campaign says the border deal is a whole lot more than continuation of wall funding — and a tiny fraction of what Trump has proposed.

It's a Trojan horse to pass the Lankford abortion.

It helps to staunch the flow when combined with a reversal in Border Patrol policy. Both are within the power of the executive.

Then deportation has to begin in earnest, which will cause a lot of self-deportation. There are other effective "policy tools" as well, but the main point remains: Harris doesn't want to do any of that. Will she build a wall? Maybe. I doubt it, but maybe. If she does, though, the rest of it won't be there.

It doesn’t matter if it’s 1000 feet tall. The illegals are walking in at border crossings. And it’s never really talked about but there are millions of illegals who overstay a visa. Something like 30% of all illegals get into the country legally.

The problem we have is the “once you’re in you’re in for life” policy. Nobody gets deported. That’s what fundamentally needs to change. Interior enforcement as well as turning back people at the border. If that doesn’t change a wall is meaningless.

Let's don't talk about who the prime contractor for SLS is.

284 Attitude control thrusters are tough, space is hard. I was reading one of the NASA Oral History project interviews, or maybe it was elsewhere. They talked to a guy named Jerry Pfeiffer who was at Marquardt, and they made thrusters. They had a lot of problems with them.

He went into a lot of specifics, and it sounded exactly like what the problems they are witnessing with Starliner. They overheat, and teflon seals swell, restricting flow or somesuch. Almost verbatim, I thought it was "interesting" in kind of a sad way, from an engineering standpoint.

Eisenhower decided to start a civilian agency, separate from the military, called NASA. But they cherry picked about half of the top test pilots from the Air Force and Navy, and a crapload of senior generals. In hindsight, maybe making the space program a wing of the military might have been a better choice.

285 Since their engineering sucks, this is now as much a PR problem for Boeing as anything else.

Boeing should preemptively announce it intends to send StarCrossedLiner to some interstellar destination. That simplifies their problem (reducing the tasks to undocking and pulling away from ISS without wrecking it), eliminating the whole "return to earth" problem, and conveniently sends the evidence far, far away. They could keep broadcast video and pictures from the vehicle for years. Maybe swing by Mars.

286 And the *only* way for Boeing to salvage anything of this slow-motion disaster is to bring the capsule back safely.

Their best chance is to train the highest-ranking executive to pilot the thing back, because software never works the first time.

I never had an aunt who got drunk and picked her nose at parties. I find Kamala's smile and fake laugh annoying enough.

289 Just heard that Michigan and Wisconsin (and possibly NV and NC) refuse to remove RFK, Jr. from their Presidential ballots.

I think this is an unforced error by the state elections. This is not much of a good news thing, but imagine that Harris pulls a Biden in the debate, the ballots are already being sent out . . . And the average dem says "Hell no"
Kennedy is a good democrat name, for all the baggage, and it is a valid protest vote.

290 We are repeatedly told that out in public we have no expectation of privacy. Our public persona is open to anyone and everyone, including law enforcement [grin] authorities.

I think that that's a gross violation of the 4th Amendment. Out in public I should have every expectation of privacy - that under no circumstances, save in imminent commission of a crime, the public authority has zero right to take in interest in me, nor to take any cognizant notice of my person. This Meta-glass further establishes this point.

This is an arm of jurisprudence, this "no expectation of privacy" which needs to be overthrown.

291 Google Glass was one of Google's few failures.

In addition to all the bad things listed above, it also was a way for Google to use facial recognition to recognize individuals, to determine what businesses were popular/crowded, and to determine what the mood was in certain spaces.

Or was it really a failure?

The technology was repurposed as Pokemon Go, the faddish game of the same time. Now all the facial recognition, business monitoring and mood judging could continue, with the added bonus that the developers could induce people to scan particular locations with their smartphones, instead of waiting for Google Glass people to wander into those locations.

292 Sure, but that doesn't make for a compelling movie script. The smartglasses give it the "hook."

293 Perfect for recording Grateful Dead concerts.

There as a guy back in the 90s who must have had a home-made pair. He would be down by the stage, dancing without moving his head in order to get a consistent sound.
