Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | House Democrats Tell Their Media Allies to Put Out the Word: Don't Worry About Kamala's Communist Grocery-Price-Fixing Scheme, We'll Never Go Full CommunistWe should take Communists at their word on this. Why should anyone ever have to commit to a position publicly? Just leak your (alleged) position to your media allies to propagate.Under pressure to defend Kamala Harris' grocery price gouging plan, some Democratic lawmakers are delivering a quiet message to anxious allies: Don't worry about the details. It's never going to pass Congress. The Harris campaign's proposal, unveiled as part of her first big economic policy speech, has become a focal point for her presidential rival, Donald Trump, and fellow Republicans, who claim she's pushing "communist price controls." It has also alarmed food industry officials and even some left-of-center economists, who've warned such policies can hurt more than they help. While much in Harris' price gouging plan remains vague, a central piece is simply a call for Congress to pass the first-ever federal ban on price gouging in the food and grocery sectors, which largely mirrors legislation reintroduced by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) earlier this year. But such a bill has no chance of passing Congress anytime soon, even if Democrats win the White House and Congress this November, according to six Democratic lawmakers and five Democratic aides who were granted anonymity to discuss the matter candidly. These people said Democrats in Congress have privately been telling critics that this part of the Harris plan is not viable. Rather, they've argued it's a messaging tactic -- a way to show that she understands food prices remain an economic burden for many Americans and to redirect voters' anger about inflation to corporations, in a way that progressives in particular have cheered. In other words, it's a hustle and a lie and everyone understands this. But if you don't, then Politico is here to spread the news to the insiders. "It's clear to me these are very general, very lofty goals," said one of the Democratic lawmakers, who was granted anonymity to candidly discuss the proposal. They're also reassuring their tech bro billionaire donors: Don't worry, her proposal to put more money into antitrust actions won't pass either. And Politico is here to tell the insiders not to worry while Kamala and the Democrats lie to the outsiders. Or vice versa -- who knows what their actual policies are. It's all Yasser Arafat politics now, speaking in one language to the base and another language -- with different rhetoric -- for the outside world media. We are all Palestinians now. #FreePalestine. I mean, we're metaphorically Palestinians and need to be freed. Frank LuntzOh, they support them -- they just want to lie people into communism. Remember "you can keep your plan"? Remember Baracky Obammy telling you he was in favor of male-female marriage only? They lie until they get enough power to do what they want, which they keep hidden from the public until it's time to strike. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

In the US, around the time of the Revenue Act of 1913, people were very nervous they would be affected by the new federal taxes. The US government undertook a huge PR campaign. One part of that campaign was to send out a mass mailing in which they assured people the tax would only apply to the top 1% of income earners. Their proposal would top out at 7% rate for income over $500,000.

It's all Yasser Arafat politics now, speaking in one language to the base and another language -- with different rhetoric -- for the outside world media.
++++ Good comparison. This is how it works in academia. The contemporary academy doesn't speak English anymore. That's what all the "woke" language is. The form of it that leaks out into the press and onto social media is, for the most part, a pidgin form of the language, a debased hybrid. Within the ivory tower, they speak the pure form of it. The words are mostly English, but the language itself is distinct - and distinctly ecclesiastical. It's a class and group marker. If you can speak and understand the Postmodern language of the elite, you're an insider. The fellow travelers speak the debased version of it. Pig Latin vs. Latin. Like English in Jamaica. The elites can all speak real, actual, Queen's English. Many of the poor cannot, they speak only the pidgin form of English that is distinctly Jamaican. The elites' Postmodern language not only acts as a class signal, it allows them to speak and plan in plain sight because it's so inscrutable to outsiders. ++++ Let's apply some Occam to this. If this is supposed to be a signal that she "understands food prices remain an economic burden for many Americans," then why didn't she say *that* instead of talking about price controls? If groceries are too expensive and she both understands *and* acknowledges that, then why is her message coded? Why is her coded message about price controls instead of broader inflation management? I can't think of a reason one would do this, and I think the rational explanation is that it *wasn't* a coded message to get across a level of "understanding" about the issue at hand. Rather, they've argued it's a messaging tactic -- a way to show that she understands food prices remain an economic burden for many Americans and to redirect voters' anger about inflation to corporations, in a way that progressives in particular have cheered.
--- And "we're not going to actually fix anything". That's why they hate Trump. "Messaging" isn't his forte. He weirdly believes in doing something. Posted by: Axeman at August 26, 2024 02:00 PM (krQz2) 85
Even totalitarian states have to bend to the market. When the owners go bankrupt and suppliers are not paid, a store will close. The only solution is what some leftist cities are proposing which is government operated stores. Those too will go under in turn unless the government takes over supply industries, which then too fail unless they wipe out all competition and kill the kulaks. ...

Yes, but did rationing help them during the war?
Granted that they kept rationing after the war, and voted in a commie, and they were bombed to shit so it is hard to tease out what caused problems 20 years later. I never really thought about if rationing helped or hurt, but I tend to assume it was good for moral knowing that no one else was getting butter or bacon. Not sure. Posted by: Gentlemen ======== Both in the UK and the US, rationing and price controls spurred a massive black market. You get a bit of how black marketeers were viewed in some UK series but I'll wager you will not see the same coverage in the US despite its known existence. Economic historians reviewing the records of the dead OPM and its British counterpart have come to the conclusion that it actually hurt the war effort via the domestic economy more than it helped. The OPM was based on the foundation that Wilson laid in WWI except the negative effects did not last as long as the US entered the war late. Posted by: whig at August 26, 2024 02:14 PM (kW+z9) 166

The Depression in the 30's wiped out a lot of that sort as a class and its repeat in the near future is likely to do the same. Lots of those big houses are likely to be carved up into apartments is my guess just like the 30's and 40's did to a lot of those big houses built before then. I guarantee you there is a deeper reach on this. Just like every other legislation and agency, the enforcement would be selective with the goal of intimidation. No more right leaving businesses or even neutral businesses when it comes to politics. This would be a broad brush push to require DEI using the enforcement of price controls (and essentially ruin) to anyone non-compliant. That doesn't even touch on the extortion of fundraising for elections. The Dem party can't raise money. They end up skirting the law to acquire funds. This would be using the "law" to guarantee funds.

Posted by: 18-1 at August 26, 2024 02:13 PM (oZhjI) ________ Probably high income but also heavy spending habits and debt. It doesn't matter how much you make if you spend more than you bring in. Sure, that can last for a while, but eventually the house of cards will fall. Income is not wealth. Assets are wealth. A dollar safely invested is worth 5+ dollars in income. The only way to acquire assets is to divert income to buy them. But that reduces the availability of immediate spending and gratification. That's a bridge too far for many high-income earners. Economic historians reviewing the records of the dead OPM and its British counterpart have come to the conclusion that it actually hurt the war effort via the domestic economy more than it helped.
Posted by: whig ----------------- I'm not saying you are wrong, only that your argument is unconvincing. My question is whether it was valuable for cohesiveness. I agree that long run it not only hurt their economy but it got the British accustomed to the whip which led to even more problems. I am not sure this is something that can be revealed by looking at numbers though. Another point is that I always viewed it as just another tax - gov. makes butter unavailable to the public so they can buy it up for the troops at a lower price. This taxes producers and those who buy on the black market at a higher price. The goal is not to stop people from eating butter, but to reduce costs for gov. All taxes harm the economy (more or less) so saying it caused harm is not really informative. Merrick Garland, flanked by Obama henchman and key Russia collusion architect Lisa Monaco, cites growing J6 caseload to warn Americans not to "interfere" in the certification of the 2024 election. (h/t @wendyp4545) First, the transfer of power happens on January 20 not January 6. (And DOJ let off the hook hundreds of 2017 inaugural rioters.) Second, there is no law guaranteeing the "peaceful transfer of power." Which is why the Constitution provides several weeks between election day and inauguration day with both a state and congressional certification process and opportunities to contest the results. Third, as he brags about the nearly 1,500 J6ers arrested and charged so far for January 6--including at least seven last week during the DNC--most face misdemeanors. Fourth, SCOTUS overturned how this thuggish DOJ used 1512c2 and his prosecutors in most cases are now sheepishly dismissing the count. And we are still awaiting a long delayed opinion by DC appellate court on DOJ's most common misdemeanor on Jan 6 cases. Every time I see Lisa Monaco I fume that 48 Republican senators confirmed her appointment as deputy AG. Posted by: andycanuck (c39uV) at August 26, 2024 02:37 PM (c39uV) 307
Income is not wealth. Assets are wealth. A dollar safely invested is worth 5+ dollars in income. The only way to acquire assets is to divert income to buy them. But that reduces the availability of immediate spending and gratification. That's a bridge too far for many high-income earners.

This was a benefit of the "old way" of community banking as opposed to modern integrated finance: the lender (or landlord or whatever) did a lot more homework, would check references, etc. or even actually knew you or at least your reputation. Now so much of it is outsourced, integrated and consolidated that this isn't possible. The upside of it is higher efficiency and lower costs to transact. The downside is the loss of context. The credit report says what it says, and you make your decision. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at August 26, 2024 02:38 PM (HnUIn) 309

The 'Wealth Tax' on unrealized income is their plan.
If you have assets you will be taxed on them until the friends-of-the-feds own everything. Landlords eventually let them off the hook. They could have made it ugly -- the leases had co-signers on the hook -- but decided to let them leave and get better tenants. I don't think either of these rentals lasted 4 months before the dumb tenants realized they couldn't afford the rent.
Posted by: Doctor Elric Blade, Esq. at August 26, 2024 02:38 PM (iFTx/) ++++ Man, if the landlord capitulated less than halfway through the lease despite having a co-signer (which explains a part of why the landlord agreed to contract), the paperwork, time and stress involved must be *totally* not worth it if the landlord thinks he can get a new occupant into the unit quickly. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at August 26, 2024 02:45 PM (HnUIn) ______ LL were worried the tenant would just say "fuck you" and stop paying rent in total. Very hard to get rid of deadbeat tenants. This is blue-state NJ. Sure, the LL could chase down and even sue the co-signers, but that's a long process. So better to let sleeping dogs lie and just find a new tenant. Posted by: Doctor Elric Blade, Esq. at August 26, 2024 02:49 PM (iFTx/) 380

Truman's decision in 1952 not to run for what would effectively have been a third term might not have been entirely unrelated to an ongoing war, which happened to be the least popular in American history. As a consequence of which, Truman himself had become deeply unpopular.

Another thing on the taxing of unrealized income: if they take, say 25% of the asset's increase in value (unrealized capital gain), the basis is reset, yes? So there would be lots of such taxes paid in Year 1 (on all unrealized capital gains up to that point), but dramatically fewer taxes each year thereafter...?

Korean War started in 1950; Eisenhower was elected in 1952 to end it.
Posted by: My Ridiculously Circuitous Plan ===== Actually he wasn't so direct. What Eisenhower said in the 52 campaign was "I Will Go to Korea" period. Go back and look at the economic stats for the era and public polling was relatively decent in that era. Truman and Dems lost as much for his handling of the economy as they did over Korea. Taft was the one arguing that Truman's War was unconstitutional due to the way it evolved. And Taft lost the GOP nomination race to Ike who was seen as being more favorable to intervene abroad to stop Communism. Things are complicated in history and rarely is there one overriding reason for the way things were. Posted by: whig at August 26, 2024 02:56 PM (kW+z9) 394
