IIRC, Gainsborough was often like that. He seemed to throw out the chiaroscuro for just dark.

Yeah. It is quite dark, but I suspect it's very dirty. My guess is that it's much lighter - still dark, but that *that* dark - if in better condition.

It does depend on the media. Oils on canvas would use a different solution than frescos, for example. I cleaned a marble statue once. We used a mild bathroom cleaner and toothbrushes.

Here is a video from NOVA/PBS showing the restoration of frescos in Tibet. I used to show this in class every year. Their method is what they used to clean the Sistine Chapel.

I was about to make a joke about some kid's show today, but realized one thing I hate about modern art. Art done well evokes emotion. Be it awe, reverence, breathtaking beauty or protectiveness, love.

Modern art and culture has stripped a lot of the positive, innocent feelings from art. The feelings they evoke are often sadness, horror, disillusionment, bitterness.

We look at the statement as written and we think 'Wow they viewed them as amusing objects that evoked tenderness.' Is that a BAD thing?

109 I prefer Thomas Gainsborough's landscapes to many of his portraits, although some, like the Blue Boy, are exceptional. This one is an interesting juxtaposition. The innocence of the young children contrasts with the dark land and foreboding cloudy sky. Not a lot of rural romanticism here. The smallest is unaware of the future struggles to face, the oldest, with that knowing, sideways glance and awareness, knows already. The little boy with his stick is the transition between the two, wanting to play but limited to the simplest means. It isn't all tragedy as they all look healthy enough with those rosy cheeks and skin, not starving, but the viewer knows of the difficulties of their situation.

It's an effective painting.

there is a lot of derision put on the "large eyed puppy in a boot / waif with a fishing pole" school, and I suppose next to a David it has no story and not plot. a lot of the modern art is either mooning on about how bad people are, or how sterile the world is, and I can't decide if it is self created anomie, or intepretation of the world via whatever the newest theory is.
In my personal experience, dramatic and jarring images are easier to create than placid and pretty ones, and beauty is harder to portray than ugliness. Ugliness just needs things to be out of proportion, which middling art skills like mine excelled at.

LD was superb, and Duvall superb in it, partly because it was a multi-part mini-series, and there was room for lots of the character moments McMurtry had in the novel. A mere two-hour film would not have had room for the moment when Gus "chastises" the bartender in Fort Worth (I think it was that), for instance.

That said, his turn as "Boss" in Kevin Costner's Open Range comes close.

Depends on the cat. No, no blind adoration, but certainly strong affection -- again, depending on the cat. The late Marie-Antoinette and the current Stirling were and are both very affectionate even after being fed. Others I've lived with have been closer to the "tolerance" category. It's why I tend to call my cats "friends" or "roommates" rather than "pets."

Well, 16 hours does seem like a good average. Cats spend most of high summer and deep winter asleep. But on a crisp spring or autumn day, very much awake & active. Or the active cycle begins at some odd time, like 1 AM. Don't stay up late if you have a cat, being forced to entertain it when one should be sleeping is difficult. But then sometimes the cat is not to be seen anywhere, an I wonder if it has then gone off to the dark side of the Moon. (Heinlein & Lovecraft knew that cats are extra-dimensional travelers.)

well, in terms of making mistakes, Robert E Lee was no Braxton Bragg. Lee made some mistakes, but was usually fortunate in having adversaries that could make twice as many mistakes, of a much higher magnitude. Lee was on unknown ground at Gettysburg, away from his beloved Virginia. He didn't know the land, and the chaotic nature of the first two days' fighting didn't help him either.

The sad thing about Gettysburg was that a victory wouldn't have helped Lee much. The capitol was ringed with forts and garrisoned by what amounted to a separate Union army. Lee didn't have the firepower & manpower needed to force a way in there. Meade could rally his army, pick up reinforcements, and then be the hammer against the forts' anvil. Lee would've been better served to occupy Harrison for a few days, letting his army restock itself at the city's expense, then return south. The newspapers would've seriously taken Lincoln to task for letting a state capitol fall into Confederate hands, and Britain & France might've given the CSA another look.
