Sharing is caring... The following picture is a stock photo of a Hollywood premiere, with two actors and an actress. The actress is Amy Lynn Baxter, who among other things, was a regular on the Howard Stern Show. Amy is an interesting person; her uncle was Max Baer Jr, the actor who played Jethro Bodine on the Beverly Hillbillies. Her Great Uncle was Max Baer Sr, who was Heavyweight Champion of the World in the 1930's. In June 1990 two significant events happened in her life, The first was that she was selected as the Penthouse Magazine Centerfold for that month. (She was the runner up for Penthouse Pet of the year in 1990)
https://tinyurl.com/3vbartsp The second significant event that occurred to her that month was she became the best looking woman I have ever had a date with. Now I know there are a lot of you infuriated that a nerd like me who wins arguments with NASA engineers about the phase of the electric and magnetic waves in EM radiation, got to go out with an actual 10 like her. Hell my friggin *toothbrush* has probably 10 more materials and processes in it than in the 80s. Accordingly, 10 more people were required to produce it.
Product design complexity became jobs programs. Your car's tail light covers? Slightly different every year. New molds, new dies, tool and die makers always have a job that way. The tiny changes to every single part in your life aren't made for you. They're made for the workers. VW had to retool for the Beetle's lifespan like four times. The maniple was much more flexible than the phalanx. Especially more effective in rugged terrain than in the open field, but generally better in almost every case... The small-unit tactics allowed for skirmishing and flanking maneuvers at the outset, while leaving the option to fold back up into a more phalanx-like mass during protracted fights, and bring more experienced, fresh troops forward to finish a beleaguered phalanx.
The phalanx made sense in the Italian peninsula, until the Samnite wars. After that they were fucked. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at August 26, 2024 10:49 PM (0FoWg) 166

We liked our 2004 Nissan Quest so much that when it became unfixable (no AOP available), we upgraded... to a 2005 Nissan Quest. The '04, used from a rental agency, had power windows and locks, but no fancy features. The "new" one (funny story on its acquisition) has power passenger-side back door and power back hatch. And had a remote fob until it broke.
Lately, the car developed a slight problem with an erratic speedometer, and even more recently, now the airbag light on the dash is flashing all the time. Thinking someday we may have to get a newer car. Someday. Would rather just keep the old quest chugging along. If only AOP made housecalls to Oklahoma.... Yes, Trump served at the highest position, and all of DeepState wants him dead for defying the criminal cabal. I thought about linking that THC study this morning but I didn't need to set off fireworks here during the day.
My take on cannabis and the brain: it comes down to what you do when you're stoned. If you lounge around eating junk food and passively consume mindless entertainment then you're rotting your brain and it will respond accordingly. If you read ("I love to read; Flash Gordon and Dick Tracy mostly"), write, play a musical instrument, etc., things that require your brain to be active then somehow -- I don't know but it seems to be a thing -- then your brain grows accordingly. If you've never done THC or dislike it, then you won't understand what I mean. But if you do like it, then (esp. if you're at least an occasional on here), you will. (And no, I'm very sober right now and going to stay that way all night.) Posted by: SFGoth at August 26, 2024 11:16 PM (KAi1n) 218

Drug tests on the meconium would reveal if mom was still using. That was '92 - '97, so whatever drugs were popular then. Negligence was the most common problem for most of the kids. However, my wife also had a Masters in social work, so they gave her a lighter case load, but gave her the nastiest sexual abuse cases. I could not have done her job. I would have been in jail. Well, Plan A for fixing the Suburban steering did not pan out. Evidently the de-gutted EVO valve on the steering pump would not play nice with the pressure relief valve behind it, and I got little or no power assist. Attempting to purge air from the system did not help. So, on to Plan B. Found a 1970's vintage Saginaw steering pump in my parts stash. Took the outlet fitting out of that, and lo and behold! It fits the '99 metric pump perfectly. Of course, it has the 3/8" inverted flare fitting for the pressure line, and not the the metric O-ring nut. So I cut the ends of both pressure lines, and used a 3/8" compression union to join the end of the '70's line to the line in the '99 Suburban. Looks good, and works 100%
And I fired up the pressure washer, and got down on the ground and wallowed in the mud, pressure-washing every remnant of mud that I could see and reach with the wand. I got real muddy, but the bottom of the truck is now real clean. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 26, 2024 11:47 PM (eaycV) 283

Posted by: Braenyardio at August 26, 2024 11:57 PM (N1fOF) I sustained some nicks and cuts, too. I wound up securely fastening the compression union to the angled stub that screwed into the pump, and managed to tighten the flare nut into the pump with the stub angled up, and about midway between the back of the pump and the front branch of the exhaust manifold, with an inch or more clearance to the latter. Then I was easily able to insert the end of the pressure hose into the compression union, and tighten the nut. No leaks! And I had power assist as I backed the rig off the hoist. I'm not sure any truck company has had that as a coal in about 15 years. The car magazines even rate them on how big the cab is and how luxurious, instead of towing capacity and loads, now
Trucks are now the full size car. This was social engineered on purpose, First to blunt public displeasure at everything being a FWD 1.5 liter CUV by giving an option. Second because the profits are increased because you have to build trucks anyway and it is cheaper to lux up a truck than to have to build a whole separate real car platform. Posted by: azjaeger at August 27, 2024 01:03 AM (3/XaG) And, given my druthers, I would take the Suburban in a heartbeat over a big Cadillac sedan. The big Caddy is a nice car, no shit, but it cannot haul stuff, and they aren't all that great in snow or mud. My Suburbans are all 4WD, and they can handle the rough stuff with aplomb. For the same money, the Suburban, or a big 4WD pickup, gets you a lot more capability. They may not ride quite as smooth as the big Caddy, but on a smooth highway, the difference is negligible. Design a common "deck mount", using the exact same attachment dimensions and hardware as a 20 ft. Conex box, on an elevated platform. One each, fore and aft, port and starboard. On each and every ship that transits the Red Sea and other trouble spots. Have the crane lower the "pallet", with pre-mounted Phalanx and ammo reserve. Each Phalanx to feature the upgrades that let 'em aim and lock in go-fastie surface threats. The ship makes it successfully TO the Suez, the crane lifts the "pallets" off, and swings 'em over to a ship LEAVING the Suez, and heading into the Danger Zone. Standard USN crew to board each ship and manage the weapons. The crew transfers with the "pallets", always. All "danger zone" ships can hence be armed. OF COURSE... I'd rather all ships were ALWAYS armed, worldwide. But, I put this forth as a Fair Start. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at August 27, 2024 01:31 AM (kQgoX) 339

Morning to all you insomaniacals! I'm up a little before the alarm, not much, and do feel better than I did yesterday (still no explanation for either situation).
The story about more and more tech in cars . . . after five years, I have yet to find the GPS in my '16 Buick to be useful or easy to implement. Give me paper maps to navigate; the screen in the car is too small to give me the overview I need before I can zoom in to my destination. It has a "lane departure warning" that trips if I swerve around a pothole (and Lord knows there are a few of them around here), so I turned that off. The other radar features are fine and everything has been reliable. But my '03 Park Avenue had none of this, and it was a great car to drive too. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 27, 2024 03:28 AM (omVj0) 393
The clip of Tarantino cursing, I mean talking with Bill Maher . . . On the one hand it's nice to see someone with a pipe. On the other, a calabash, the name of that kind of pipe, is sort of ridiculous. I used to have one, and traded it; it was too big and made me feel like a poser. Which is what QT looked like handling it. A smaller straight or bent pipe makes a statement ("Yeah, I smoke a pipe; what's it to you?") without shouting, so to speak.
A corncob pipe makes another kind of statement. Those aren't for me. It reminds me of characters on Green Acres, and my vision of myself as a pipe smoker is the editor/writer/lawyer/doctor/engineer with his briar pipe. - Here in northern Israel, GPS insists for some reason that our car is always on the tarmac at Beirut Airport. There was a recent exception. This past early Sunday morning, the car was on the tarmac at Queen Alia International Airport, south of Amman, Jordan. Get around, round, round I get around. Posted by: JQ at August 27, 2024 *** Howdy, JQ, I love my power windows; I can roll them down and drive for a bit on hot days to blow the heated air out before I turn on the A/C and put the glass back up. Auto transmission and power steering are all I know. And power brakes are all to the good. But *I* should be driving the car, not merely steering it. The only things I wish the Buick had are a way to roll down the windows before I start the car, so that heat dissipation can start while I load my briefcase and take down the rear sunshade; and the "kick under the bumper opens the trunk" feature that lets you deposit in your groceries hands free. The '15 BMW had the latter, and I miss it. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 27, 2024 03:48 AM (omVj0) 398
Oh, and looking at the clip of Tarantino and Maher, I see it's trimmed; in it, the pipe is simply sitting on the table. But I followed a link yesterday to a longer version in which QT is actually handling it and presumably smoking it. That was where it made him look like a poser.
