There's a swirl of movement around the altar. Lines and angles all point to the calf... but they also point to Moses and Joshua in the left background. It's a neat way to quickly tell the story and also stimulate a range of reactions in the viewer. This goes from a "Oh dear, they probably shouldn't do that" to "Oh Sh%&$%" real fast.
I like how Moses and Joshua are in shadow. You don't see them at first. Only the movement of your eye reveals them. Posted by: Kris at August 29, 2024 09:40 AM (EwaUh) 39

Check out the group of people to the left and just behind the altar. Each of their heads are in a different degree of turning around, from focusing on the orgy to a slow turn to something getting their attention behind them -- Moses smashing the Tablets. It's a cool image of slow-motion realization. I really like this painting. There's so much in it.

71 Now where do you think all those former slaves who fled Egypt in haste came up with all that gold in the middle of the desert?
Posted by: San Franpsycho The Jews plundered the Egyptians pretty good whilst leaving with cattle and goods. After all those plagues, Pharoah was glad to see them go. Until he had a change of heart and pursued them. didn't go well for him, his chariots, and army. The song of Miriam tells that story. Is it 100 comments? I have to share this, because the Lego story previous jogged some synapse.
Mumble mumble years ago, in a university course of the required type that nobody would ever elect, the "professor" who once spit out the word meritocracy with a contempt that I'd not fully appreciated (among other daddy issues and neurosis) started waxing enthusiastically about recycled plastic sweaters. What was notable at the time, being just slightly older than class peers, there is a tendency to accept whatever is said by a person in a position of authority is taken uncritically. Naturally, that's what is wanted. But a simple question - "How much does it cost?" was met with about two hundred dollars. I pointed out that consumer sentiment is kind of a funny thing - that nobody is going to pay $200 no matter how much they "support the environment". It's a silly notion in the first place. And the sweater is literally made of garbage. That kind of thing isn't ready for prime time. In hindsight I should have went all hippie on her. Synthetics actually perform worse than Wool. It's true. There's some sort of synergy going on with natural fibers. The plastic stuff STINKS too. Posted by: Nomenclature 2.01z at August 29, 2024 10:01 AM (ix5nG) 132

Yeah. The point I was trying to make, not very well, is that this sort of worldview was common a long time ago with the wack job crowd.
The fact that Lego is onboard with it years later shows how it works. The universities are the "proving grounds" for all manner of fvckery, something that I had no idea. Plastic is a wonderful material, but it generally is not recyclable. It is kind of a recipe, and made with chemicals that form together into a new product. In other words, it is not like a metal or alloy that can be melted down again and reused. It doesn't work that way. The very best most efficient way to deal with plastics, is to burn it and derive electricity from it. This offends delicate sensibilities even if multi-billion dollar scrubber facilities are installed, so there's some other neurosis going on there. What was remarkable, she was tuned in on all the current du jour fairy tale stuff. Said people mowing their lawns in suburbia responsible for Gulf War, that kind of thing.
Class pondered "what kind of fuel do passenger jets use" so I helpfully informed them a type of refined kerosene. At the time, she also made an observation that China or India won't be able to have prosperity the way we do here. Naturally the inversion of this is what is happening. They aren't going to lift the rest of the world out of poverty, the plan is to impoverish the West. This was obvious decades ago. Posted by: Nomenclature 2.01z at August 29, 2024 10:22 AM (ix5nG) 192

Is this a thing? It might just be.
A few days back, Samsung announced a new innovative solid-state battery which requires around 1 kilo of silver per battery pack. Why is this news? The new battery is a breakthrough technology for the EV industry. The range with one of these new batteries is 600 miles and you can charge them in 9 minutes instead of the lengthy time it takes the current options in the EV industry. What will this do to silver demands? Without even talking about the more than double demand increases in the solar industry, we are now going to see a massive increase in demand from the EV industry. And with the BRICS countries bringing back precious metals backed currencies, the demand is even higher. Silver is hovering around $30 an ounce and has the potential to explode in the near future. It's already the most suppressed price on precious metals on the market. https://tinyurl.com/443fy6mn

TJM could write us up a treatise on it off the top of the head, but I had reason to look up the "VistaVision" wide-screen process the other day, and stumbled on some Film History. It was a 1930's camera in the first place, but setting it up sideways allowed the use of more film area and allowed for a competitor to CinemaScope in the 50's. It was used for just a few years, and then relegated to storage until it proved useful for intricate frame-by-frame special effects, like the parting of the sea ("by Edward G. Robinson and Ernest Borgnine!") in Ten Commandments. In the long run, used very little but you would not have the first Star Wars without it. Antiques, huh.

Some eyars ago I wrote a short story in which an American movie actor who gives his name as "Emanuel Goldenberg" travels with a film unit to his birthplace, Romania, and meets a dangerous if rather dashing vampire. At the end, he gives his card to the young woman who owns the inn where he is staying: "Edward G. Robinson, Actor, Hollywood, California."
I had found that EGR was born in Romania, and the rest flowed from that. I'd hope any film buff would realize who he really is before the end. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 29, 2024 10:49 AM (J2vNu) 277

Great Britain didn't end wartime rationing until 1954, and they "mined" their silver coinage to pay back the US with lend-lease and such. Their coinage reverted to cupro-nickel slugs.
The US followed suit, as spot silver prices approached the magic of $1.27 a troy ounce, something like that, in the 1950s. Johnson and congress demonetized silver, though claiming the old and new coinage would circulate together freely, something that has never happened in 3000 years, but sure. Later, savvy folks discovered that banks around the country, never having liked silver dollars too much, kept mint bags in the basement of brand new 1800s silver dollars to hold as reserve requirements. These could be exchanged for a silver certificate - an obligation of the government. These were soon cleared out, and the government was reduced to exchanging little bags of silver shot for the silver certificates. They reneged on silver certificates after 1968. Silver has an interesting history. Posted by: Nomenclature 2.01z at August 29, 2024 10:58 AM (ix5nG) 315

A precious metal standard has its virtues but also well documented problems in history that are usually glossed over. So what about Maricopa?
Seriously. Who GAF? Assume 100% of 2020 cheating. They "won" 2020 by 11k. With the last polls having Biden up an average of 2.8%. Barely scrapped out the win. After weeks of "counting." And all the cheating we've endlessly discussed here. 11k. Even if they somehow do _more_ cheating than 2020, they still can't overcome a 6% swing from Biden. Or, put it this way: With the massive cheating in 2020, what state did Trump lose that he was leading in the polling average? Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at August 29, 2024 11:08 AM (rK75L) 340

Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at August 29, 2024 11:08 AM (rK75L) ======= 1.7 million out of 5 million ballots in GA in 2020 have no images. Arguably a third of all ballots in GA in 2020 were fraudulent. That's a very high ceiling of cheat...and it probably isn't the actual ceiling. $2100, but yeah. Then add in markup.
Posted by: rickb223 Gold & Silver Spot Prices at August 29, 2024 10:49 AM (kPAiX) Silver could be a lot cheaper. There was an old saying in the mining industry, "You have to own a gold mine to make a silver mine pay." Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 29, 2024 11:14 AM (qSmRQ) 342
