What the hell happened to basic telephone manners? As many of you know, I'm on the job market. When you're on the job market, you get cold-called by recruiters. This is even sometimes helpful. But good Lord, they have no idea how to do an open. Here's how these have gone, every time - both with recruiters and with company personnel calling to set up an interview: "Hello." "Hi! Is this Joe?" "This is he. May I ask who is calling?" "This is Nancy from Global Talent Acquisition, and ..." No. This is wrong. This is *not* how it is supposed to go. It's *supposed* to go like this: "Hello." "Hello. My name is Nancy and I am calling from Global Talent Acquisition. May I please speak with Joe?" "This is he." You're calling a stranger. Introduce yourself. Don't be excessively informal. Don't make him guess who you are and ask your intentions. This shit used to be basic. My conclusion: mostly people's names. Chevrolet, Ford, Chrysler, Benz, Porsche, Cadillac, Pontiac, Olds(mobile), Buick. Mercury was a Roman god, but that was a personal name too. Dodge was from the Dodge Brothers. Plymouth? From Plymouth Rock, or Plymouth, England? Models, however, ranged all over the place from predatory or fierce animals (Jaguar, Mustang, Barracuda) to names that sounded luxurious like Monterey and Montclair and Windsor. "Volkswagen" was an outlier -- the "People's Car." And "Dacia" -- the Roman name for Romania? Oookay. Posted by: brak at August 23, 2024 10:11 AM (NGHTx) ++++ LOL. It's odd. I did an interview with a place where I *really* want to work (and I'm even hopeful, for now). The interview process was complicated for various reasons. The department secretary coordinated it and she was extremely informal in communications. Lots of exclamation marks and emojis in E-Mails, etc. She was also hugely polite and helpful and responsive. She did a great job, other than the informality of language. She was spectacular in every other respect, and I seriously appreciated her help. During the interview, the hiring manager and I walked by her office (I saw her name on the door) and I begged a moment to step in and say, "thank you." I expected a woman in her twenties. I found a woman in her early fifties. I was astonished. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at August 23, 2024 10:14 AM (HnUIn) 202

I hadn't known this. From the Wiki entry about Plymouth cars: "The logo featured a prow view of the ship Mayflower which landed at Plymouth Rock in Plymouth, Massachusetts. However, the inspiration for the Plymouth brand name came from Plymouth binder twine, produced by the Plymouth Cordage Company, also of Plymouth. The name was chosen by Joe Frazer [of Chrysler] due to the popularity of the twine among farmers."

Those with long memories recall when a schoolteacher was insistent about forms of address. One ordinarily was never on a first name basis. This was a matter of discussion for children. I think "engine" vs. "motor" is a matter of the size involved. In slot car racing, the motive force unit was called a "motor"; the powerplant of a destroyer or a prop/jet airplane is called an "engine." You wouldn't interchange the terms.
A car engine, being between those two extremes, could be called either. There's also the expression in English of "an engine of destruction." That implies something very large. You wouldn't say "a motor of destruction." Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 23, 2024 10:37 AM (J2vNu) 294

Chevy made an upmarket car on the same platform, called the Monza, and it was a available with a 262 cubic inch small block.

I don't have a wife and didn't use unnatural procedures to get pregnant. Posted by: FenelonSpoke - Blaming them? That's an interesting thing to say. No, I'm just pointing out that unnatural fertilization and women who are out of their prime are likely the cause of the trend of autism we've seen, or at least a factor. It's a realistic discussion that needs to be had. I'm fine including vaccines and hormones and any other variables. I mentor *a lot* of young women professionally, which is - well, definitely a dicey thing these days. But a lot of them are close enough friends of the family that they're in the "yeah you can crash here any time unannounced" category. We've warned all of them about waiting until they're 40 to have kids and while they don't outright reject it, they also don't seem to understand the full seriousness of it. This "have kids after doing career stuff" thing has been fucking awful in every society it's popped up in. Posted by: somedood at August 23, 2024 11:23 AM (EBSeK) 396

Posted by: somedood - The problem for me is yes, I like for Americans to have more kids, but I'm not sure we should encourage women to have kids that would be subject to 80 years of a mental disorder or physical ailments when they could just have their kids when they're 20-25. But feminism broke that science-based approach. Posted by: Moron Robbie, Black Tik-Tok Influencer at August 23, 2024 11:30 AM (jzegu) 397
