I'm not familiar with the artist but I am impressed. The use of red and red undertones throughout the painting stresses the cardinal model. Everything is balanced from the pose to the proportions to the level of detail. And there is nothing 'generic' about the Cardinal. He is clearly an individual.
Look through the paintings on Strozzi's Wiki page. They are varied for topic but show the same appropriate use of light and color and realistic detail. There is some soft humor in some of them, as well. The scenes with several people caught my eye. Each person is handled as an individual. Reminds me how Rembrandt made sure each of the models in his crowd images were different. Posted by: JTB at August 20, 2024 09:51 AM (zudum) 138

Sadly no. As I just quoted, from etymonline.com:
from Latin cardinalis (adj.) "principal, chief, essential" Posted by: Ian S. At its inception, this term emerged from the Latin word “cardinalis,” meaning “pertaining to a hinge.” This seemingly mundane reference to a hinge carries profound significance, as the term “cardinalis” was used metaphorically to represent the pivotal roles of certain individuals within the Roman Catholic Church. -- birdsofthe wild.com Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at August 20, 2024 10:00 AM (v6JzV) 205

My impression is that the good cardinal was painted without the hat, probably wearing his skullcap. When shown the painting, he wanted his biretta included, so the artist added it in. As to the subject's apparent youthfulness, what portrait painter worth their salt doesn't leave out wrinkles and even remove a few pounds to flatter their subject?

Wolfus, If you get I chance to try the C and D Sun Bear Black Locust limited run blend, I think you would like it. The honey flavoring is a bit different from last year's Tupelo release but it is just as enjoyable. reading Nixon's memoirs continues to fascinate and delight. I just finished the section on the 1968 campaign.
When you look at the map, it looks like a Nixon landslide. He won 300 EVs and 32 states. And yet, it all came down to a handful of states: Illinois, California, and Wisconsin. If Humphrey had won those three, the election would have gone to the House where the Dems certainly would have cut a deal with Wallace to win the White House, keeping Nixon out. In the end, Nixon won, but Illinois held back until the last possible minute with Mayor Daley in Chicago trying to create as many fake votes as needed to help the Dem win. The more things change the more they stay the same. Posted by: Shenanigans at August 20, 2024 10:26 AM (pZ0Mr) 306

More for those not familiar: chest freezer is way, way more efficient than a refrigerator. Easy to run one even on a small portable inverter generator, and you can freeze 2L bottles of water to put in coolers (or... a refrigerator) to refrigerate things. Running an actual refrigerator takes an asston of watts, especially with vertical-door models being much less efficient. Also highly suggest a dual fuel if you go for a small inverters; run it on propane as long as you can so you don't have to mess with storing/preserving gas, draining tanks for storage, etc. The one I keep gas in I run every 2 weeks. Hi Bulgaroctonus, just saw you've applied for a job at B&N. I worked at a B&N college division store and then a B. Dalton back in the day. We'd get a 40% employee discount at Christmastime, not sure if they still do that. Nice little perk.
You'd be wildly overqualified for many staff jobs (i.e. not requiring MLIS) in academic libraries, and the pay is usually dismal, but would that be something you'd consider? In my experience, being overqualified isn't an issue, since it can be a major challenge to get ANY qualified applicants for some jobs. And for things like cataloging, we just want someone with the aptitude (like being detail-oriented) and interest, not necessarily prior cataloging experience. > Vacuum sealing is a serious force multiplier on storage.
-------- Months ago we were at Sam's Club. They had a tray of sirloins, like 20 of them for sale. Individually sealed and sitting in my freezer. I can have one a week and it's almost a half year of steaks, once a week. Posted by: Martini Farmer at August 20, 2024 10:58 AM (Q4IgG) 437

When Jews wise up and realize that Israel is their national homeland, they will come on aliyah and work - as long as it takes and as hard as it gets - to put in place a government that grants its citizens the right to bear arms.

I have the unfortunate habit of making snide remarks and mocking movies at a low volume which half my kids have picked up. Someone should have told me how annoying that is when multiplied. Posted by: Ribbed at August 20, 2024 11:00 AM (Ectld) 445

I hesitate to ask what cut.
Posted by: BruceWayne at August 20, 2024 10:59 AM (CIS44) ++++ For me, I lay in mostly sirloins, with a fair number of ribeyes and a few NY strips (I find NY strip to not really be worth the money. Ribeye is worth its premium for some high-end steaking, but NY really isn't in my opinion). Have some cheap cuts, too. I see no difference in storage stability after vacuum sealing. Biden's Dog, I've been curious about some things and wanted to ask you about them if you don't mind sharing.
I'm inclined to like Netanyahu but I wonder about some of his actions, keeping in mind that even the best people make mistakes. I assume he rushed to congratulate Biden's "win" because his intelligence information indicated that the coup was going to succeed and it was smart to try to be on Biden's good side. But what about the Covid shot mandates despite the injuries and lack of efficacy? And how did Oct 7 happen despite what seems like very capable defense and intelligence agencies and a strong survival instinct? Posted by: Emmie at August 20, 2024 11:04 AM (Sf2cq) 453
Lovely to look at, unbearable to watch in The Phantom of the Opera. Catch The Wedding March, if you can. Von Stroheim directed that one and drew a beautiful, nuanced performance out of her.
