Good morning boys and girls and everything in between. It is time to grab a beverage and enjoy Saturday morning.

Before we enter the Prayer Revival, just a few housekeeping matters to go over. (Rulz for those of you in Mankato.)

1) This is an open thread. Feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate away.
2) Be nice to one another. Please do not jump on the furniture.
3) Running with sharp objects is not banned, but frowned upon.
4) Thank you Annie for your service.
5) Have a nice weekend.

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:
6/15 – Grumpy and Recalcitrant asked for continued prayers for J.J. Sefton of the Morning Report. He is about to begin chemo and radiation therapy.
8/6 Update – J.J.’s final chemo and radiation treatments were on 8/4 and 8/5. There’s a four week wait until the first post-treatment MRI. He’s hoping to regain energy and more of an appetite in that time. Please continue to pray for J.J.’s recovery and restoration to full health.

6/25 – TP asked for prayers for JT, who is ill and in need of prayer.
8/2 Update – JT is in a rehab facility. Prayers are appreciated.

6/29 – bluebell passed along a request from grammie winger, who asked for prayers for her husband, Rev, who is having open heart surgery on 7/8 to take care of his aortic aneurysm. Recovery time is expected to be 6-8 weeks.
8/3 Update – Grammie winger posted that Rev had emergency surgery, and now has a colostomy bag. She said it’s not as fun as it sounds…..
8/8 Update – Rev is finally home from the hospital.

7/20 – Defenestratus asked for prayers for an aunt and uncle. The aunt just passed away after battling her second round of brain cancer. Her first bout was 34 years ago. The uncle has been distraught, and now they found a benign tumor at the base of his skull that is causing a blood vessel to be pinched. This is causing vision issues for him. They have to wait until next month to see if it is operable.

7/20 – barbarausa asked for prayers for her son. He has gone off the deep end again, and just got kicked out of rehab, after being kicked out of his last group home. He is calling her, asking her to come get him, and she cannot. She can’t take care of him, or keep him on his psych meds, or keep him in treatment, or live with the psychotic breaks.

7/21 – Nan in AZ asked for prayers for her doctors and her mom. Nan is in the hospital with possible cardiac issues. Nan’s dad passed away last month, so they are still dealing with that loss.

7/22 – Sponge’s First Lady is home and resting comfortably. The surgery went well and the doctor was pleased. They did remove some lymph nodes that looked suspect, but did not have to remove much mass around the cancer. They will have the results of the tests on the nodes next week. Thank you for the continued prayers as she has only just begun this whole thing.
8/8 Update – One of the lymph nodes had cancer cells in it. She’ll start chemo in a couple of weeks, but for now it will be once a week for 12 weeks, then different meds once every 2 weeks for 4 weeks, then radiation for 5 weeks. They send thanks to all for your support.
8/12 Update – Sponge’s First Lady starts chemo this week, earlier than expected. She’s also nervous that her boss won’t be happy that she can’t work Thursdays anymore, due to the chemo schedule.

7/24 – Pooky’sGirl requested prayers for her SiL, who lost her mother to an MS-related aneurysm a few months ago, just found out that her father has pancreatic cancer.

8/3 – Black Orchid asked for prayers for her usual August blues, from taking the kids back to school/college. They love their schools and are excited to go back, but it can be sad.

8/3 – Our Country is Screwed asked for prayers for his 27 year old daughter. She is having breast cancer surgery in a week. The Mrs. and he will be heading out to be with her.

8/5 – bonhomme posted that her mother-in-law fell and shattered her femur. Her surgery went well, but it’s going to be a long recovery.

8/6 - LMD Outer Banker requested prayers for a son who is undergoing an experimental treatment for chronic Lyme disease, which he has been battling for 25 years. He will be in a clinic abroad for about a month.
8/10 Update – The son has had his first major treatment for Lyme disease, and his rash has already disappeared. It’s amazing.

8/10 – Farmer Bob provided an update. He sent his thanks for the prayers and encouragement. It’s been a year, and he is fit, fun, fashionable, fearless, and faithful man again, vs. the pit of despair and despondency.

8/10 – From about That Time requested prayers for a nephew, daughter, and the entire family in general. The nephew, a 45 year old, was camping with the family, and felt ill. He went to the porch to rest and died. The daughter could use prayers because she just lost her (early) second pregnancy. A boatload of prayers would be greatly appreciated.

8/10 – Tonypete asked for prayers for his HS buddy Fred, who passed away on 8/9 after suffering from ALS for many years.

8/10 – S requested prayers for his friend Jim, who lost his brother and needs strength to assist in this painful transition.

J8/11 – RickZ asked for prayers for an internet friend, Pandora, who died of cancer, and for her beloved husband. Pandora was very worried about him, how hard it will be for him when she died.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

18 This is interesting:

The Hill: Trump huddles with Tulsi Gabbard ahead of debate with Harris. “President Trump has proven to be one of the best debaters in political history as evidenced by his knockout blow to Joe Biden,” spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said. “He does not need traditional debate prep but will continue to meet with respected policy advisors and effective communicators like Tulsi Gabbard, who successfully dominated Kamala Harris on the debate stage.”

Gabbard won't do him any good. Dems consider her traitor. As far as helping get rethug votes, what's the use of preaching to the choir? Neither of course lessens his mental decline, his real problem besides being an election denier and insurrectionist.

As if her brief time on a podium with Harris will help him when he goes off on tangents on Hannibal Lector and sharks and acid batteries.

Harris will have on her prosecutor hat and demolish the lie-a-minute, convicted criminal. He'll wish he never consented to debate her.

Tulsi dominated Kamala so bad Harris became VP and is now the leading contender for president. She's just another grifter weirdo traitor hanging out on Fox.

Prayers both spoken and unspoken.

For efficiency's sake I take a page from the Mass (where prayers are offered for everyone in the Prayer Intentions Book) and simply include the Horde in my daily devotionals.

Speaking of which, I finally took the plunge and received the Host on my tongue during the Mass on the Solemnity of the Assumption of the BVM. It's certainly more efficient.

It was a nice Mass setting, too. Beautiful choices in music and the parish school staff were there and received a special blessing. School starts next week and my elder grandkid is just so excited.

Link goes to chrissmith.house.gov:

"The full House of Representatives passed an amendment offered by Rep. Biden was told he had to pick a black running mate and she was the least threatening one he could find. If he found someone articulate and capable, there would be a risk of him being deposed, not just pushed off the ballot.

The same is true about staff. Stupid, amibitious people never hire staff smarter than them, which is how Walz got tapped. The cringe video of him bragging that he's whiter than mayonnaise is truly epic in its stupidity. Yeah, he'll lock up the self-hating simp vote, but that was already a given.

The only people who don't know what's happening at the border are the willfully, stubbornly ignorant. Every one else already knows and is either outraged or doesn't care. Yet another story about yet another vicious criminal won't change a single mind.

I returned from vacation to find out that I've been the victim of some office politics. I was removed from my position, despite being wildly successful, without any explanation.

I still have a job and can keep working at my current location until I retire in 3 years, but I am strongly considering an offer from our division located in San Diego. It will be a burden on my family, having to be bi-coastal for several years. But it looks to be my best move to protect myself.

89 From the last thread: In the rest of the English-speaking world it's called petrol. Gas refers usually to LPG or propane. South America has numerous vehicles that run on LPG or propane. We say gas but mean gasoline, which would be less confusing.
Liters per 100km means that the smaller the number the better the mileage, unlike the mpg. It makes sense in a world where gasoline is expensive and one can decide how many liters to buy depending on distance needed to travel.

The British classic car magazine writers do often mention what kind of "mpg" their cars get. Of course they're using the Imperial gallon, which to Americans makes your mileage look terrific until you catch on. For the longest time I wondered why I could never match their numbers for a W126 MB sedan with mine when I had the same weight and engine displacement.

I overheard someone yesterday- the person's parent was diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer's and is scheduled to talk to someone about euthanasia in the future (because as the disease progresses the person will no longer be considered to be of sound mind).

The person talking about it was obviously distressed but taking the attitude that it is the patient's decision.

131 Dave in Fla, if you don't feel a great call to move to San Diego -- and you know CA is not a good place to live -- maybe staying out your time where you are, while planning the retirement in detail, is the way to go.

The move of my office is apparently on hold for a while, as another department has hogged the building where we're supposed to go. My retirement move does not have to happen this month, then, since I don't have to avoid that right away. My uncertainty is the same as everybody's here, namely, who's going to be Pres. by Nov. 6. I'd hate to give up my job, be in the middle of moving, and find out that Knee-Pads has gotten her hands on the levers of the economy. On the other hand, every day I hate living here more than I did the day before.

Thus (and this is horribly obvious), you need to balance the positives of a San Diego move against the negatives.

If I had to be in CA, San Diego would probably be the place I hated the least. That opinion is based on a couple of trips there long before the current border situation so it may be outdated. That's exactly what you should be evaluating - whether those plans are worth it. Such considerations require at least a full 24 hours to consider from every angle. "Sleeping on it" works.

Some of you may remember a spot of drama in my household a while back, and things are finally resolving themselves somewhat, but not in a way that either my wife or I would have ever dreamed of. We still shake our heads at where we are because it's the opposite of what we expected.

Yet here we are, and that's all there is for it. It's not what we would have chosen, but that's ultimately irrelevent. We are where we are so we'll make the best of it and - and this is the most important part - try to understand what God is trying to tell us in this.

157 I have a daughter who's fleeing California with her family. She's here with us now, working at a local hospital. Her husband and 2 kids are coming next week. After 14 years she finally realized they were never going to 'make it' there. Her husband is a life-long CA resident so you can imagine how difficult it's been to convince him to bail.

They have no home here. So a family of 4 will be squatting with us. With only 2 usable bedrooms. We're still trying to figure out how they'll be able to support themselves. So far, it's on us. That's the choice we've made. But we are hopeful they will sort this out.

159 144 great job, Hadrian! As always, I am here if anyone is seeking very very generic advice assuming no health conditions requiring special diets (that is the space for a really good dietician vs. a health and wellness nutritionist). You may not agree with my take on it, but remember, I have a money back guarantee. 😂

With this, I am heading in to take a class and then teach an intensive class focusing on seat and abs. Lunges, pretzels, and planks, oh my! Also total core, upper and lower ab work. 😃

When deciding when to retire, look at what age your parents(if dead) and grandparents died.

That's the best guide for roughly how long you'll live.

If everyone made it, say, into their 90s, then those extra years of work may be a huge benefits.

If they all barely got to 65, early retirement is probably the way to go.

Don't discount but also don't depend on modern medical miracles to show up and extend your life.
If Coconut Harris "wins", you'll be but a useless eater in her commie schemes.

When it became clear I had to retire from the Guard, I got with a financial planner and we went over things. I'd never even thought about retirement - all of my energy was just holding things together.

It was nice to take a step back and see what my options are.

One of the things I learned is that insurance isn't really that important when you're old. By that point, stuff should be paid off and once I retire, my retirement will go to my wife in the event of my demise. That allowed me to radically change how my insurance is set up.

As I told the agent: "Insurance is replacement income, not a chance for my wife to live her best life on the Rivera at my expense."

163 To get the 25k down payment you will have to accept a National House Code plan that overrides local zoning.

My guess is this means they plan on a system to take that hidden 10 acres near your nice neighborhood (it happens to be 14 in my case) and build houses much like the model FHA 235 homes of the early 70s.

These will be carport with driveway (no garage) and somewhere around 1300 sq ft. The main feature will be that the design and standard will not fit your community built it will be attractive to inner city dwellers wanting a way out.

And thanks for the other advice about friends/community. Truth is I don't have any friends who are local to me and I'm not selling my house in Florida. 201 On a whim, I stopped in on the daily thread this week and saw David French was doing his usual thing, making the conservative case for human sacrifice or whatnot.

The thread was old, and nooded soon after, but one thought that struck me is how utterly irrelevant French, Goldberg and the rest of their coterie are these days. I think Ace's hate is their primary form of exposure. No one else in the conservative movement notices them.

Yeah, the egg-head National Review alums tweet at each other and write unread articles in dying journals, but the actual debate that they are supposed to shape has moved on.

French was once an influential person, particularly in Christian circles, but his repeated hypocrisies have destroyed that. Some months ago he was tapped to be part of a panel discussion and such was the outcry that it was dropped.

The reason was that no one considers him an honest dealer. Like many other nominal Christians, it is impossible to ignore his intellectual dishonesty.

215 I bring this up because it's a good thing, it's showing that Christians are learning that giving dishonest people the benefit of the doubt is pointless and even self-defeating. As I posted on my blog, guys like French (whom I did not name) constantly invert the principle of subsidiarity.

They always advocate yielding to evil now (sacrificing souls in the process) in exchange for some supposed future victory (that is far from assured) that will somehow make it up.

French is also a Calvinist, who thinks himself part of the Elect, so he can sin like there's no tomorrow because God will it to be so. Karl Barth went even further, reasoning that his importance to Christianity as a theologian justified him secretly keeping a mistress in his home for decades, to the torment of his wife and children.

If a man many consider to be the leading theologian of the 20th Century could have a side-piece, French can surely have a cuckshed and advocate alliances with evil.

When it came time for him to sell a little to acquire more he'd build a very nice but not extravagant house on a 25 acre lot.

229 96 Looking for insights on this kind of situation:

I overheard someone yesterday- the person's parent was diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer's and is scheduled to talk to someone about euthanasia in the future (because as the disease progresses the person will no longer be considered to be of sound mind).“

People have grappled with this problem for millennia, and it’s helpful to look at what time honored guidelines have been. Two big problems with Euthanasia in that situation; first, a person slipping into dementia should not be considered “of sound mind”. Second, in general heirs will often be eager to get Granny out of the way and collect the inheritance; society should not grease the wheels and make it easy for them.

The line has traditionally been - not doing extraordinary medical treatment is acceptable, the person in question can be allowed to die naturally. But giving them a lethal injection or cocktail is the same as putting the old man out on the ice flow to freeze.

I obviously don't know the details of the work situation, but if without notice they want to move you across the country from a position you are performing well at it's one of two reasons. They would like you to quit and save severance. Or they need a skilled person elsewhere. Honestly if it was for skill, I think their approach would have been different. So it's more likely they want you out. This means if you move it will only get worse, not better.
Obviously completely speculative, but if they respect your work, move or lose is not the approach a serious company makes.

Sometimes men tie their own self___ up in their work. The satisfaction of doing a job and doing it well. I was there for decades. But then things changed and I asked myself if what I had devoted almost 80 hours a week to for decades was really that important when it could all be swept away by politicians with a signature on a document?

So I accept that I can't and won't tie my self___ up in a workplace anymore. There are other battles, other wars, other satisfactions in life. Seeing my wife catch a little panfish and the delight in her eyes at such a simple pleasure. We don't need world travel, trips to other countries. Sometimes just walking along the banks of a local creek is as much satisfaction as the best day I ever at in the workplace. Simply enjoying the passage of time on a warm day with a picnic lunch at a local park. Hiking a trail, catching some fish. Nothing that requires a million dollars in the bank to enjoy.

So think about it long and hard Dave.

284 On another note Mr. Lloyd, I finally got around to ordering Long Live Death. It hasn't arrived yet but it's in the que behind finishing CS Lewis's SF trilogy and possibly a reread of The Abolition of Man. I look forward to your insights.

286 Wow.

Okay, I found this funny and not disrespectful.

The main reason, of course, is that the assassination attempt was not successful.

YMMV.

If they throw the zoning rules out, they can plant the massive apartment complexes, the thee story one, as "cheap starter housing" for people who don't know how to live in buildings, and never leave because they are on welfare.

Right around the nice neighborhoods.

294 Dave in Fla,
I have a slightly different take here. I remember a post you did in the hobby thread a few weeks back, and it's clear that when you talk about an exciting job, you're talking about a WORLD-CLASS EXCITING JOB. That kind of challenge matters going forward, even if it's a struggle in other ways. It keeps you who you are. It keeps you ready if another challenge shows itself.

I'm older than dirt. I look around and see too many people my age essentially treading water, whereas I'm taking courses on-line. Believe me, my kids are supportive, in part because they see the difference in their own lives from their friends, who have become custodians.

297 Mr. Dave in FL,

Similar problem here - except they want me 'transfer' to the next office down the road, 45+ miles instead 15 mile commute.
Right of the top, assuming my current commute plus 8hrs plus lunch is about ten hours, this will add another hour.
10% increase in my time for the basiclly the same job, same pay.
But wait, there is more... Another $5000 year in gas never mind wear and tear on vehicle.

Also, they hired several people in this office in the last ten years. I am high senority (not that it matters)...

Yes, the REALLY want me to leave.

298 There's a pretty good game show on called The 1% (even if it is hosted by Patton Oswalt). The idea is to determine whether you're among the smartest people. It's not really a knowledge or logic quiz and might almost be described as a trick question show. For example, one question is what is the only planet the astronauts have walked on?

Late to the thread, but I agree with "Inogame." Acting while you were on vacation, shows their own acknowledgment that they were not acting in good faith. Why give them 3 more years to fvkc you around some more?

In all seriousness, maybe you or Mrs. DinFlorida don't have 3 more years. Perhaps this is a door closing and you just need to open another door.
